Subject: Lauren Crane

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine - The Garden 2251

Walking around the garden with the evening low lights on was one of Horatio's favorite times. He enjoyed the tranquility and serenity it offered. Being so late into the night, he wasn't required to run experiments or check data, he didn't have to file a report or listen to an update, for this was his chance to truly appreciate and enjoy the work he was doing.

He paced around the room slowly, taking in the visual of each of his plants, enjoying a glass of warm water. He never liked cold water, unless he was eating. You can't chug cold water if you're thirsty. he thought.

Walking out of the garden, he stopped in the main lab and found Lauren Crane working at a station. The lab's main lights were off, the only light really touching the atmosphere of the room was the light from the station she was at and the PADD she seemed to be holding, though it was hard to tell as her back was to the door and she hadn't turned around. Walking around the room, he observed the focused expression she wore. She doesn't know I'm here.

"Crewman Lauren, how are you?"

Lauren squeaked in surprise. "Lieutenant, I'm fine, sir. You surprised me."

Horatio chuckled softly, "I'm sorry, miss Crane. I was just enjoying the garden, figured I'd stop in to see how the tests were coming."

"All is well, sir. I was just looking at the data from Ensign Maize's work on the escape pod we delivered. Respectfully, you should be asleep by now Lieutenant, we're leaving in the morning."

"I can sleep when I'm dead, and how many times must I tell you, you don't have to call me sir if it's just us here. The formality is suffocating."

"Easy for you to say, you're the Chief." she pointed out.

"Hmm. True." He paced over to the other side of her station. "I have other news for you."

"Oh?" Her eyebrows cocked in curious surprise.

"Yes, Captain Drake has permitted me to grow a specimen of northern european wolfsbane." He gave her a thumbs up as he spoke. "I have a significant amount of work before I can actually grow the thing, but having the captain's permission is, obviously, the biggest obstacle."

"That's great! I haven't seen wolfsbane since college." She paused and looked at him. "How the blazes did you get him to agree to that?" She looked curious.

"Contrary to what you believe, he's a very reasonable person and level headed. I just explained what I wished to do."

Lauren looked down. "I'm sure he is, he just never talks to me or acknowledges me when we cross each other."

"You have to consider how many people are aboard this vessel, Lauren. If he spent time trying to engage personally with every one of them, he'd never get anything accomplished."

"I suppose you're right...sir." She smiled a facetious smile.

Horatio poked her in the shoulder. "Trouble maker. Regardless, I need a list from you while you're on gamma watch. I need a full plan on education for the staff as to how to safely interact with wolfsbane, both in general and this specific breed of it. I'm going to get with engineering tomorrow, if we have time, to discuss a workable solution to isolate the cultivation area from the rest of the ship, with security protocols in place to prevent any unknowing person from wandering into an accidental encounter with it. Also, I need you to check my bastard love child and make sure it doesn't get above 30% moisture tonight. I still don't know what to expect from it, and I'd like it as controlled as possible."

"Understood, Lieutenant."

"I'm going to have you and I as primaries for this specimen, meaning if you interact with it, I must be aware and vice versa. I think checking in every 10 minutes should do. Ensign Dalia doesn't have the botanical experience to truly appreciate the gravity of wolfsbane like you do, given your time at Oxford, but I have no doubt she'd do the job admirably regardless. It's just that I'd simply prefer for such a rare plant, it be treated by those most inclined to appreciate it."

Crewman Crane flushed with surprise yet again. "Thank you, sir."

"If you keep acting surprised, one of these days, your face will freeze like that."

Lauren opened her mouth in argument of the stupidity of that claim but thought better of it and said, "You're right, sir."

Horatio laughed. "If you need me, let me know. Good night, Lauren."

"Good night...Horatio."

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine - Captain's Quarters 1850

I'm here because I just acquired a new specimen of..." Horatio let his voice trail off in a hesitant and uncertain manner. "Well, it's a new plant that I've never had an opportunity to work with before or study. It's called aconitum lycoctonum, colloquially known as Northern European Wolfsbane."

"Wolfsbane..." Drake answered uncertainly. "I'm no botanist, Lieutenant, but if I recall science from years ago, it seems that this is a rather dangerous species."

Not just any wolfsbane. That's like saying a bullet ant is just an ant... Horatio thought to himself.

"Well, Captain," Tesenblen responded, "I've always been honest and plain with you and you've always done right by me, so I'll be straight with you here. This plant is far more dangerous than anything you've ever seen. The smell of this plant can knock a grown man unconscious if he's exposed to it enough, and with further exposure, it's potentially lethal. With your permission and extreme," Horatio lay heavy emphasis on the word, continuing with, "care given, I'd like to grow a specimen and use it in my research. I believe there are potential applications here that can advance modern medicine in ways I can only imagine."

Lt. Tesenblen watched the captain lean back in his chair. "So then," he began, "let me get this straight. You're asking me to allow you to cultivate a dangerous, deadly - and, as far as I know, illegal" Oomph, he nailed that one. , "species in the name of scientific research?"

"That's the short of it, Captain. I wouldn't bring it to your attention if I did not believe in the good we could do with it." Horatio's eyes sparkled in unjustifiable hope. Please, Captain. This opportunity is once in a life time...

The Captain sighed openly and went quiet for such a time that Horatio wondered if the anxiety had made him deaf somehow. Finally, Captain Drake's vision focused on him again.

"Innovation often requires thinking outside of the box, pushing boundaries past where we are comfortable. I understand this," he spoke. "However, Mister Tesenblen, you absolutely will not cultivate this Wolfsbane..." Horatio's hope shattered as the Captain continued, staring hard at him, "until you put together a satisfactory plan for handling it safely." Horatio's heart blossomed with unfathomable hope.

The Captain paused for a moment before he continued. "I want a full plan on education of your staff as to how to safely interact with this plant. I want a workable solution to isolate the cultivation area from the rest of the ship, with security protocols in place to prevent any unknowing person from wandering into an accidental encounter with it. I want safeguards in place to treat this thing like a wild animal - no crew member is to ever be alone, unsupervised, with the plant; if something goes wrong, someone will know about it and be able to help the afflicted individual. I want our new doctor - yes, we are getting a new Chief Medical Officer any time now - fully informed as to what you are doing, and to have medical prepared in the event that emergency treatment is needed for exposure to this species. If you cannot comply with these conditions to my satisfaction, you will bring any samples of this plant back to my quarters, where I will personally oversee their recycling in the replicator. Are we clear?"

Is that all? Horatio thought dryly.

"Aye, Captain. I'll begin making arrangements with my staff. Thank you, Captain, I can't thank you enough. I'll have the report done as soon as I can." Horatio could not for the life of him keep the smile off of his face. The chance to study european wolfsbane! Unbelievable!

Drake nodded. "Very well, then. Horatio, I will fully support your research - as long as you can convince me that it can be safely carried out. I will expect your report by sixteen hundred hours tomorrow. Dismissed."

"Aye, sir. Thank you."

Walking out of the Captain's office, he started contemplating the logistics of the Captain's request. Dalia is going to murder me. He chuckled to himself as he walked to his office, his spirits incredibly high.

I'm really curious what the good captain will say. Science requires sacrifice and risk! I can adjust my post as needed if I spoke out of turn or if one of your prior responses requires it.

No worries at all.

It also took me THREE TRIES to post that. I kept accidentally backspacing and going back on my browser near the end! GAH.

Standing outside of the Captain's Quarters, Horatio's nerves prodded him in the stomach, forming a knot. Focus man, Captain Drake has always been reasonable. He'll see reason here. In all of his experiences with his Captain, Horatio has found him to be level headed and in command of his emotions, at least better than Tesenblen himself.

Science requires risk. He repeated this in his mind, steadied his nerves, and made his presence known to the Captain, who hopefully was inside.

(OOC: Assuming entry is granted)

"Good evening, Captain. I apologize if I've disturbed your evening in any way. There's something I wished to discuss with you." Horatio bore as hopeful an expression as he could.

(OOC: Assuming a positive, curious statement or question)

"Well, as you know, I take incredible pride in my botanical work. I tediously and meticulously tend to every plant in my care. Would you agree with that?"

(OOC: Wide open response possibilities, but assuming Drake isn't catching on yet)

"Thank you. It so happens that I've actually managed to cross two species that I'm hopeful the product of which will allow potential testing for elimination of diseases we still struggle with, including more effective treatments for things like cancer..." his voice trailed off. "I digress, allow me to get to the point."

(OOC: Is Drake catching on?)

"I'm here because I just acquired a new specimen of..." He let his voice trail off in a hesitant and uncertain manner. "Well, it's a new plant that I've never had an opportunity to work with before or study. It's called aconitum lycoctonum, colloquially known as Northern European Wolfsbane."

(OOC: Assuming Drake is onto Horatio here)

"Well, Captain, I've always been honest and plain with you and you've always done right by me, so I'll be straight with you here. This plant is far more dangerous than anything you've ever seen. The smell of this plant can knock a grown man unconscious if he's exposed to it enough, and with further exposure, it's potentially lethal. With your permission and extreme", heavy emphasis here, "care given, I'd like to grow a specimen and use it in my research. I believe there are potential applications here that can advance modern medicine in ways I can only imagine."

(OOC: Going to stop here and let Captain Drake respond as he sees fit.)

"No way! You have aconitum lycoctonum?! That's impossible!" Horatio exclaimed.

"Nope! A guy came through here on his way to Starbase 910 several weeks ago, he had a dozen seeds." Starbase 118's only botanist, thought he prefers to call himself a horticulturist, something Horatio despises, said with a smug expression.

"That's amazing! Finding wolfsbane is rare, but finding northern european wolfsbane is just spectacular! I'll trade you for a few seeds." Horatio replied.

"You can't be serious. These seeds alone are worth a fortune. I had to trade nearly 20 various specimens for just two of these!" came the snarky response.

Lt. Tesenblen sighed. He never liked this part, but he was always up for the challenge.

"Would you take agrostemma githago?" Horatio asked.

"Corn cockle? If you're going to joke with me, don't waste my time."

"I have ricinus communis and abrus precatorius." Horatio tried hard to keep the hopeful look from his face.

"Rosary pea and castor beans. You're almost tempting me. Do you have any moonseeds?"

"None available for trade, sadly. It took 4 attempts to get a specimen to grow, I had issues with the atmosphere for it, given how absurdly cold it has to be for them to grow. I used my available seeds, but expect to have some available in a few weeks."

"A few weeks does me no good, Lieutenant." The 'horticulturist' (Horatio sighs thinking about the title) began stroking his goatee. "Come now, you have to have something truly valuable."

Looking around, Horatio leaned in close and said, "I have solanum nigrum..." he let his voice trail off.

"W-Wha...What?!?!?!" His colleague exclaimed. "You have black nightshade?!?!"

"Keep your voice down, man."

"Are you absurd? That seed is worth 10 of my wolfsbane."

"I'll trade you one seed for your offer, but you only get one." He let the heavy emphasis on the one lay.

"I'll trade you northern wolfsbane, lily of the nile, and cerbera odallam for it."

Horatio's eyebrows rose quickly. "You have the suicide tree?"

The man before him sighed softly. "I do, I have a few seeds spare and I'll trade it for your black nightshade.

"Done!" Horatio smiled and carefully removed a seed preserved in a tiny container. "Good luck, but you shouldn't have any trouble. It's hardy."

"Thank you."

After they exchanged specimens, Horatio carefully labeled and boxed his new prizes. Wishing each other a good day, they went their separate directions, Horatio carrying his case easily with one hand, smiling as wide as the day is long.

That went spectacularly! I can't believe my luck. I wonder how Dalia is doing... He let his thoughts wander off to his assistant as he made his way back to the Peregrine to store his new plants.

Dalia walked into the lab looking fairly more tired than she does normally. She glanced over, a look of surprise plastered on her face to see Horatio standing over a monitor checking information.

Horatio laughed, having witnessed her entrance. "Yes, Dalia, I do work here, too." He smiled at her.

Realizing she had been caught nearly gawking at him, she looked sheepish. "Apologies, Lieutenant." She sighed.

"I'm assuming by your expression you weren't able to get a sample?" He asked.

"Negative, sir. The security, the shielding, and the unknown danger of the sample, even, all contributed to my failure. I'm sorry." She looked almost downtrodden.

"I'm not worried, Ensign. It's probably for the best, because like you said, we don't know anything about it. Besides, success meant placing our jobs, lives, and the lives of the ship at risk. It was a fool's errand and likely to have ended in us in a court martial. We should consider ourselves lucky if the Captain doesn't find out about it. He'd have our hides for dinner." Horatio mused.

Ensign Maize relaxed visibly. "What are you working on?" She asked, changing the subject.

Horatio laughed, patting the small container immediately beside him. "Well, I'm compiling a list of the garden's current seeds that I have. I'm going to see if there is a botanist aboard the Serapis willing to do a bit of bartering with me, to trade specimens." He laughed again, seeing her completely unsurprised expression that he was still doing botanical work. "What? There aren't any computers in the garden for this type of thing..."

Dalia sighed melodramatically, smiling nonetheless. "Sir, we need to work on getting the pod safely off the ship and in the hands of the Serapis."

"Incorrect, Ensign. We need not work on it. I've spoken to Captain Drake and have placed you as the liaison for the science division with regards to the pod. Technically, I'm still on light duties. While I realize I might be abusing that order a little, I admit this is the first time in a very long time that I have a chance to grab new specimens, so I will be taking it." He said plainly.

"B-but, sir! That means I'd have to speak on your behalf with higher ranking members of a proper science vessel!" She said quickly, mild panic rising in her voice.

"Then speak plainly, Dalia. You and I both know you mean to become a CSO someday. Making a good impression on ranking science officers is a great step towards that, you know that. I have no fear that you'll be spectacular. You're a brilliant scientist, a gifted officer, a clever academic, and a loyal friend. Be plain but truthful with them. Don't try to sound like you think you know more than you do. As scientists, we argue facts, not perception of facts." He placed his hand on her shoulder. "Now go, Ensign Dalia Maize. Make the Peregrine, our division, and us both proud. Take Crewman Thomas with you, in case you need anything."

Dalia's eyes began to water slightly. Maintaining what she could of her composure, she straightened herself and said matter-of-factly, "I won't let you down, Lieutenant. Thank you for this honor."

"Good luck, Dalia."

As she left, she quickly tapped her comms. "Crewman Thomas, Maize here. Please meet me in cargo bay one."

=/= Aye, sir. =/= A swift response for an easy order.

She'll be a damn fine CSO, one day. Horatio thought happily, turning back to his work.

Horatio paced the garden looking for his heaviest pair of gloves, smiling. He always smiled when he made a new botanical discovery.

As he pulled the gloves onto his hands, the door to the lab chimed with Ensign Maize's arrival.

"Sir, I've received word that Lieutenant Thorson has released the containment field on the pod." She informed him.

"Very good." He absentmindedly replied, turning to a green leafy plant with what appeared to be red and black beads dotting it in several dozens of places.

"Sir? If I may ask, what are you doing?" She asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.

"Do you see this plant, Dalia?"

"Yes, sir."

"This is an earth plant called a Rosary Pea Plant. Each of these peas contains a toxic substance called abrin, and a handful of these peas would kill an average homosapien, but taste as delicious as any sweet you could eat going down." Horatio said, almost lackadaisically.

Horrified, Ensign Dalia became more aware of her surroundings and just how little she knew of what happened in the garden. "...sir? Why are you growing a deadly plant on the ship?"

"Do you see this plant?" Horatio gestured to a plant near the rosary pea, considerably larger with leaves of a reddish green color, speckled by small brown...walnuts?

"Yes, sir."

"This is a castor bean plant. Normally, the beans of this plant can be mashed to make castor oil, which is a quality lubricating substance, but the left over product can be used to create a toxin called ricin, a cousin of abrin. Both, on earth, are considered two of the deadliest poisons possible." Lt. Tesenblen turned to face her. Continuing, he said, "Do you know why I'm so happy today, Ensign?" He asked.

"No, sir." she said plainly.

"I've managed, I believe, to breed these two together, to combine the effects of these two toxins into this plant," he said as he gestured to the plant he stood in front of. These reddish brown peas, by my calculations will have a new toxin containing both effects of ricin and abrin." He said excitedly. "If I'm right, by studying these peas, I may, possibly, be able to use the cell killing capabilities of these to cure diseases such as cancer." Horatio said finally.

"How can something so absolutely deadly be so absolutely useful?" she said skeptically.

"That, my good friend, is a story for another day." He laughed. "Now, about the pod. Doctor Synklar has ordered me to light duties. I want you to go to the cargo bay in my place, find out whatever you can, and report back to me with your findings."

"Aye, Lieutenant." She said beaming. "I won't let you down."

"Frankly, Dalia, if I thought you would, I'd be going myself. I have absolute faith in you. I'll be here in the garden when you're done." He said dismissively.

"Aye sir." she replied, turning to leave. As she reached the door, she turned back one last time, "Thank you, Lieutenant."

Acknowledging her gratitude, he turned back to his work on his new creation.

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Cargo Bay One - 1330

Ensign Dalia Maize stepped into cargo bay one full of hope, energy, and determination to make Lt. Tesenblen proud. She had no plans to leave until she learned everything she could about the pod.

"Good day, Lieutenant Thorson." She said respectfully as she began gearing up to start scanning the craft.

(OOC: Assuming some non-order, non-questioning greeting)

Setting up her equipment, Dalia began an overall scan of the craft before her. She immediately noted that there were no fluctuations in the readings as there were in space hours before.

"Lieutenant Thorson, is there something different about the craft? I'm not seeing any variance in the overall scans anymore."

(OOC: Assuming answer)

"Ah, I see. Thank you, sir." she replied.

As she completed her overall scan, she started a closer, in depth scan of the hull of the craft.

She began to notice there were actually microscopic cracks in the hull of the ship... Is it cracks? It looks like the pod was beginning to crack open...or even it looks like parts of the pod were shifting on a molecular level. I wonder... she thought carefully.

Further examining the cracks, she began to get a feeling that the pod could have been ejected at warp speed, which would lead to the restructuring she was witnessing. "I wonder if it was the result of what was in those canisters." she mumbled aloud.

Gasping, she realized the containment breach may have been triggered by whatever caused these cracks in the hull. If that were true though, the other container would be breached as well. These cracks must have been caused by the nanites... But why not affect a release on the other container too? So many questions and only a handful of hours left to figure it out.

Pleased with her efforts so far, she buckled down and kept studying various information on her screens.

Horatio listened carefully as the Captain discussed what he had planned for the meeting.

Captain Silas clasped his hands. "We will be at Starbase 118 in around eight hours. I doubt that we spend much time there, so don't expect any furlough," A tinge of disappointment flickered through Horatio. "This is supposed to be a milk run type of mission... which is why I want us prepared for worst case scenarios."

As the captain spoke to each officer in turn, Lt. Tesenblen thought over various situations in which a science expert might be called on in disaster type situations, before he knew it, he saw Captain Silas glancing at him. "Mister Tesenblen, there are no immediate scientific goals on this particular diplomatic mission." Another pang of disappointment, this one he allowed to slightly show visible on his features. "Until we get to Starbase 118, I want you to focus your efforts on the anomalies around the escape pod we picked up this morning. It appears that the Serapis is currently docked there, and seeing as they are a science vessel, they will be better equipped for long term study of the pod than we will be. Once we transfer the pod, continue your normal duties, but please make yourself available should Doctor Synklar or Lieutenant Chell require your assistance."

"Aye, Captain."

The Captain sat back in his chair, and the holographs dissolved. "All, right, then. Are there any questions regarding our new orders?"

"Captain, I'll assign Ensign Maize to the scans in the cargo bay on the escape pod we picked up. I'll monitor things as well from the lab, but Doctor Synklar," Horatio nodded respectfully towards the doctor across the table, "has ordered me to light duties because of my injury in the garden."

((OOC: Assuming a positive affirmation and statement about easy recovery))

"Thank you, sir. " Horatio leaned back in his chair and turned his attention to the doctor.

"Doctor Synklar, would it be against your orders to spend time in the cargo bay to visually inspect the craft?"

"First off, you should have come here as soon as you regained consciousness. Second, you have a slight severe concussion. Which means, you need to do minor things, nothing that will put stress on you that will make things worse. I'd recommend not being alone if you can help it."

"Understood, Doctor."

"Then you're done. Take things easy for a few days, if you find yourself getting worse, come see me as soon as possible or if you are unable to contact me or have someone else contact me, no putting things off for an hour again. Am I clear?"

"Crystal clear, Doc. I'll behave myself and set up a check in with Ensign Maize."

With that, Horatio left sickbay and made his way back to his quarters for an hour of rest before the Captain's meeting at 0930. He didn't bother Ensign Maize about the check ins just yet, hoping Doctor Synklar didn't find out he was going to delay it an hour. He wanted peace and quiet, figuring he can set up the Doctor's directives after the Captain's meeting.

At 0910, Lieutenant Tesenblen left his quarters and made his way to the meeting.

You're up, Doc. For ease of transitions, you're free to have Horatio move about as you like in sickbay. He'll comply with all orders given.

I still would like to voice him myself, though.

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 0755-0810

=/= Lieutenant Tesenblen, I can confirm your readings that the containment for the lifeforms is failing. That's why our readings are sketchy; the containment keeps flickering, and it obscures the readings during those intervals that it's functioning. Our containment field should keep whatever it is from spreading beyond it until we can get it where it's going, but we'll have to shore up the field on the pod's containers themselves before we can drop our containment field again. =/= Came the voice of the Chief Engineering Officer over the comms.

=/= Our field is holding stable, bridge. You can bring it in when you're ready. =/=

Lieutenant Tesenblen monitored the stations with Ensign Maize as the pod was slowly brought aboard the ship, scanning for any further fluctuations or potential problems.

=/= Thorson to Flight Control. I'm going to have to keep a mobile containment field around the pod after we get it into the bay, until it gets into the static field. I'm going to need to control the tractor beam from here so I can sync up the mobile field. =/=

(OOC: Assuming bridge's authorization to do so, per Thorson's last post)

Horatio blinked quickly, trying to maintain focus on the monitors. Why am I still so dizzy? he thought randomly. As he reached over to steady himself, he missed, visually, the corner of the station and his hand caught nothing but air. Stumbling, he realized he was seeing stars.

Ensign Dalia saw the Lt. stumble out of the corner of her eyes. "Lieutenant, are you ok?" she whispered.

"I'm not sure, Dalia. I've been dizzy for the last 20 minutes or so..." Horatio said quietly to her, his voice low to keep from being overheard by the bridge lead.

"Sir!" She began tersely. "That's symptomatic of a concussion! You need to go to medical!"

"You're probably right." he whispered. Raising his voice to a normal level, he turned to Lt. Rock, "Lieutenant, I apologize, but I believe I've had a concussion and am not currently fit to perform my duties. I will be sending Ensign Dalia down to the cargo bay to scan the pod, she is perfectly up to the task and I have the utmost faith in her and her abilities. I, however, will be going to medical, per Captain Silas' orders, to see Doctor Synklar."

Ensign Maize, though very pleasantly surprised, had the presence of mind to appear worried about her CSO's condition.

(OOC: Assuming Bridge acknowledges and authorizes everything stated)

"Thank you, sir. I will not let you down." Ensign Maize said respectfully, her smile seeming to make her purple eyes even brighter, to Horatio as he made his way to the turbolift.

"I know, Dalia. That's why I'm sending you." He turned and winked.

Horatio stepped into the turbolift. "Deck 4, sickbay."

Minutes later, Horatio stumbled into sickbay, using the wall to maintain his balance.

"Doctor Synklar, I apologize for not scheduling an appointment," Tesenblen began jokingly, "but I believe I need to see you." Walking in, he showed her the head wound he had given himself nearly an hour prior.
