USS Peregrine; Quarters of Haemis McTavish – 0430

“The time is Oh four Thirty, bleep, bleep, bleep…” his alarm he had set blared at him.

Haemis sat up in his bed and groaned. “Shat ap ye bloody thing, or I’ll eat yer isolinear chips for breakfast…” he slowly rubbed away the remaining annoyance of sleep as he threw his legs over the side of the bed. It was nice to be back on the ship, though things had been in what felt like a state of flux since the trial, a whirlwind trial at best and of course the anticipation of getting the ship back from the yardies.

Slowly Haemis stood and pulled on a pair of sweat pants, and a long sleeve shirt, taking only a moment to slide both feet into his running shoes before he did a quick stretch. As he limbered his muscles he took a moment to look over the itinerary for the day, he knew while the ship was fixed they would likely have to undo any of the buggering the ‘yardies’ had done to their ship, but then a message popped up on his screen.

Haemis opened the file and continued to stretch then stopped reading through the message, he felt his heart suddenly skip a beat as he read the notification that the ships old chief engineer would be reporting back aboard, he had known that the position might be temporary but who didn’t hope to keep their dream job. He frowned for only a moment, gave the screen a nod and a smile, then bolted from his room, his feet pounding away any of those thoughts as he began a morning jog through the nearly empty corridors of the ship.

Haemis rounded the corner passing through the doors to the engine room, the team were somewhat milling about and some were going over displays as he walked in. He gave a smile and a nod. “Morn’n” he said and pulled out a padd. “While the yardies have been play’n in our systems and everything might look hunky doory, that’s not good enough for us. I’m sure you’ve been through a yard period before.” He pointed to the consoles. “Lets get some good diagnostics completed, and get the ship ready to depart. We’ll figure out what we need to do from their, off ye go!”

“Hey…” Caity asked as she came to stand close enough and with a hushed voice. “For what its worth you did a great job, I’m sorry your having to take a step back.”

He turned and offered the woman who had been his second during their last mission. “No need to be lass.” He gave her a reassuring smile. “If its not the right time, its not the right time. Besides it will be great to work with an outstanding engineer such as Commander Thorson, I still have a lot to learn myself. No hard feelings here at all, its another new adventure. I’ll get my ship when the time is right.” He said with a confident nod. “Besides, I’m finally in a place where I wanna be, not with some jack hole of a Capt’n like that bastard from the…” he stopped and shook his head. “I donna have to tell ye, you know.”

“Glad to have you with us Lieutenant.” She said with a smile, and she turned to her own station to start running diagnostics.

The morning wouldn’t be the most exciting, but he was sure it would be an interesting day regardless. He glanced down at his console and watched as the diagnostic data scrolled past as the team began doing system wide checks in preparation for departing.

USS Peregrine; Main Engineering – 1210 hours

Haemis had to stop himself from pacing, part of him was nervous about meeting Thorson, the last time he had seen the man wasn’t in his best moment, but he had a chance to review his records and he knew he would be working with a fantastic engineer, but he had no idea what to expect from the person. They didn’t really have a chance to interact so that part of the man was an enigma.

“Hey chie.. I mean Lieutenant.” Lieutenant Sa’eridon stammered, then took on an embarrassed look. “Sorry…”

“It’s alright, what can I help you with?” he asked and took the Padd from her. He glanced over the readings and nodded, then started walking around from the workstations tucked around the corner from the pool table. “Good catch, nothing too serious here just a few adjustments we’ll have to go out and make to those EPS Power taps to that Structural Integrity field generator. But nothing that should ultimately effect performance. Let’s get that added to the list.” He said as he came to a stop at the end of the Pool table. He began entering when he felt eyes on him.

“Good Afternoon, Lieutenant McTavish! I’m Lieutenant Command Eric Thorson, reporting for duty. It’s a pleasure to meet you!”

Haemis tensed a little at having missed the man’s entrance, he gave him a nod. “Sir, welcome back aboard. Nice to finally have a chance to meet you.”

“Excellent! I’m looking forward to working with you. I…suppose we should get the formalities out of the way.” He raised his voice just slightly. “Computer, confirm Lieutenant Commander Eric Thorson as resuming duties as Chief Engineering Officer, USS Peregrine.” The computer’s response was immediate:  =/= Starfleet orders confirmed. Lieutenant Commander Eric Thorson ordered to report as Chief Engineering Officer, USS Peregrine, Stardate 2365.02.19, 1200 hours. =/= Eric replied, “Reporting as ordered. Reset all Engineering command codes per regulations, transfer to my authority, and transfer all command overrides. Authorization Thorson Beta Tango, one nine seven four.” There was a brief series of beeps and the computer announced, =/= Command authorization and overrides have been transferred. Command change logged. =/=

Eric smiled at McTavish. “You really did a great job here, and I appreciate it a lot. Please, feel free to contribute any and all input you may have. And by all means, if you ever feel I’m making a wrong call, let me know. You obviously know your stuff, and I’ll always be glad to listen to whatever you have to say. I want us to have a good working relationship and to enjoy working together, and I’m sure you have a lot you can teach me. And if the fates are kind, perhaps I’ll have a bit of wisdom to pass along as well.”

Haemis nodded. “Thank you sir, I was just doing my job at the time. I will let you know if I have anything to contribute and rest assured I’m always open to learn’n new things.”

Eric smiled and folded his arms comfortably. “So, catch me up. Anything in particular I need to know before I get to work?”

“Well at the moment were wrapping up a battery of Diagnostics. Wanted to make sure the yardies didna leave us any gremlins in the systems that might crop up to bite is in the arse as is pretty common. We’ve already had a chance to identify several items which we’ve started putting into a list and triaging them based on priority. Outside of that everything is looking good other than the need to get back on the usual maintenance schedule.” He pulled up the list of items they had pulled together in the last few hours. “We’ve already gotten started on some of these items.” he picked up his kit, “I was about to head out to start working on a couple of items myself unless you need me here?”

Eric nodded. “Sounds good. All right, unless something comes up that needs our immediate attention, you continue with whatever you were working on. Just holler if you need me. We’ll be getting underway shortly, so I’m going to babysit the warp core for a bit, make sure we’re ready for the next bit of shenanigans. I haven’t had time to look at today’s rotation yet, so I’m not sure when you get off, but have a good day until then. I’m guessing the Captain will be having a meeting some time soon. I’ll be sure to go over the highlights with you afterward.”

Haemis gave a nod, “Aye sir, I’ll be a comm away if’n ya need me.” He said and with that he turned and headed out with his kit in hand.

Eric smiled as McTavish departed. Seemed like a good fellow; Eric thought he was going to like working with him.

USS Peregrine, Engineering – 19:03

Haemis walked back into engineering stopping only a moment to deposit some recycle into a bin just inside a room off from engineering, he lingered a moment at the entrance staring down at a Padd in his hand as he checked several things off his list. He had things to do, he wanted this ship to have an easy transition with the engineering crews that they would be meeting at Starbase 118 to do some repairs and any refitting they would need before they would be heading back out. He smiled at the thought, having gone around the block on a single mission, not having been berated or hounded after for unbelievable task that he was used too back on the Coronado.

Something pulled his attention, not something he was used to seeing. Several of the engineering team were gathered around in deep conversation, a few even appeared troubled. With an eyebrow arched he slowly made his way over and stopped dead seeing what they were looking at.

“I can’t believe this!” he heard Caity Morgan’s voice over the others, it was then he realized it was her holding the padd when he pushed his way through the group and took the padd from her hand not believing it himself.

The lone headline was all he focused on, before the movement in a video caught his eye to drive home what he was reading, right there in a small window was Captain Drake being led away by Starfleet Security. He instantly felt his anger spike, he knew exactly who had perpetrated this. He glanced around at the others. “Back to work, you have tasks to complete!” he snapped, he saw a few of them visibly flinch at the cut of his words.

It didn’t take long for them to disperse in a hurry wanting to avoid any further chastising, leaving him and Caity standing there, he continued staring at the Padd. He didn’t hear her first question, but his eyes snapped up to her when she asked him again.

“You okay?” Caity asked concerned.

“No.” he said, this time with more control than the last. “No, I’m not. And this is not Okay!” he said fighting the urge to twist the padd into bits in his hands, it gave a slight protest as he squeezed. But a gentle hand on his brought his attention back to his coworker’s gaze.

“I can take care of thing here if you need a minute.” She said, there was some reassurance in her voice as she gave him a nod. “Were docked, and nearly done with our tasks as it is.” She said.

He simple nodded and handed her the Padd. “Call me if you need me.” He said and turned at that and left. While her intervention had stayed his hand with the Padd he was still angry.

It took every ounce of his focus to maintain his composure as he traversed the ship to get to his quarters, he had not had the luxury to spend much time in them. He had not even unpacked. He crossed the small room and dropped onto the edge of his bed taking in a deep shuddering breath, then let out a long string of curses in Gaelic shouting it as if the man could hear him.

He got up and began pacing the room now, going over the hundred thoughts of what he should and shouldn’t do. His desire to go and find the man and throttle him rising but knowing that it would only fuel the fire. He let out another long string of curses as he mumbled to himself as he walked the room finally stopping as a thought had struck him.

“Damn it!” he exclaimed and then began tearing apart one of the cases he had not yet unpacked. He didn’t care what he tossed from the box as he dug looking for it, not even the sound of something breaking as it flew across the room gave him pause, finally digging to a small square cube. He pulled it out, it was a gift that his former boss had given him aboard the Coronado. Somewhat as a joke but somewhat for the fun of it. It was a multicolored cube which turned many ways and was a game of algorithms. He hesitated staring at the thing, settling down on the floor amongst the mess he had made.

He let out a resounding sigh and began plucking the plastic pieces off one at a time until he revealed the core, a lone blue blinking light gave him comfort knowing that the information had not been found. It was his trump card that he had all but forgotten about.

Standing he moved over to his small desk and opened the panel on the side of his computer and plugged the device in, then opened the storage device and ran the program he had prepared which opened a prompt. He sat there staring at the blinking line know what it expected. “Not again, I won’t be a party to you ruining someone’s life without putting up a fight. Even if its partially from the shadows.” He said and typed in the address for the Judge Advocate Generals Office, and then simply hit send. It would convey a lot of anonymous information, everything from log files to interdepartmental communiques, video files that he was able to steal away from the Coronado computer before he had been removed. It was an eventuality and It was meant to save him from loosing his job, his livelihood that he loved, but this would serve a better purpose he reasoned in his mind.

He watched as the communique built with his anonymous verbal testimony, bounce it through several encryptions, then sent the file along the vast subspace data network to try and hide his tracks, he figured if it bounced all over hell and back they might not try to look to far into where it came from. They might figure it out, and he knew based on what was in the file that Jacob’s would probably know who sent it, but he didn’t care.

Haemis leaned back in his chair after it confirmed transmission, the light on the device winked out as he pulled it from the slot. In effect the device had just self-destructed from a data standpoint. He knew what he had sent would only be considered because it came from an anonymous source, but it was hopefully enough to turn some heads and make them think long and hard about this Captain Jacobs.

“I hope it helps boss.” He said to himself. He sat in the dim light of his room for a while, staring at the screen. He only could hope that it would help, it angered him that they were in this situation. Tapping a few keys on the computer he pulled up a video file and watch that near career ending punch. Watched Captain Jacobs go to the ground, the shocked look on his face. A small grin appeared on his lips, and he realized in that he was helping to do just that. It was then a realization had hit him, it was very likely that others were doing the same thing right now. Sitting at a console writing a strongly worded letter or providing some kind of testimony to be considered. Most of which would never see the inside of the courtroom. The crew he had come to know in just a short time was tight knit, and part of him knew they wouldn’t let this one go quietly into the night.

Taking another deep breath, he steadied himself and then stood pulling his uniform tight. He accessed the task list for the engineers, they had done their duties all tasks were completed. That was one less thing he had to worry about now, he nodded and headed up towards the bridge to report their work was completed. The ship felt different since they had secured from flight operations, ships at rest always unsettled him. He liked the subtle vibration in his feet, it felt real. The ship was different in that it was starting to feel like home.

USS Peregrine, Main Engineering – 11:12

Haemis steadied himself with a firm hand on the console in front of him; he felt the shudder run through the ship as the Peregrine’s shields took the phaser strike from the Coronado. Alarms cried out as the vessels systems struggled to compensate.

“Shields at Ninety-two!” Caity Morgan called from across the room as she deftly ran her hands across the console checking systems.

“Keep an eye on it!” Haemis called back, also running checks. The ship was holding up well thus far under the phaser fire. “Let’s be ready to start sending teams for Damage control!” he said, his voice was steady and confident.

The ship pitched again, and Haemis nearly lost his footing. “What the ell is going on up there!” he said under his breath.

“Shields at Eighty-three percent!” Caity called.

“An EPS conduit on deck three just went, I’m re-routing power.” Merida Peers, the ships Damage control specialist called out over the alarms.

“Good,” Haemis said, and he too went about rerouting power around a suddenly failed minor subsystem. “Watch those shield generators!”

The deck pitched hard again, this time showering them in sparks in engineering a few consoles flickered but came back up. “We lost one!” Caity called over the alarms, her voice suddenly hurried and showing a bit of panic. “Rerouting, and bringing one of the backup’s on!”

Haemis steadied himself again. “Transfer power from the other generators, keep those shields shored up and even if you have to.”

“Were good!” Caity said. “Shields are holding at fifty-nine percent!”

The vessel seemed to settle at their feet, no more Phaser fire. Something had clearly changed. Both Haemis and Caity looked to one another respectively, both with curious looks. Haemis took a moment and pulled up the feed from the bridge.

“Captain Joshua Jacobs,” He heard Captain Drake’s voice calling out. “as lawful commander of this battle group, I hereby find you unfit for duty. You are relieved of command of the USS Coronado, effective immediately. Commander Bethany Farr will now assume command of your vessel. My Phaser’s are locked onto your own; if you do not comply, I will render your weapons useless. If that is not sufficient incentive to ensure your acquiescence, I will move on from there to cripple your engines.” The Captain’s voice we calm and collected which honestly was not a surprise to Haemis.

There was a part of Haemis that wanted to jump for joy; finally, that bastard was getting what he deserved. “About bloody time!” he said having a small private party all to himself. The rest of the conversation seemed to fade into the background as Haemis quickly returned to his duties. “Alright let’s get repair teams out to start getting her back into shape.” He said glancing around at those gathered. “Back to work with ye!” he said shaking his head.

“Should we pull together tools and teams to help the Coronado?” Caity asked. “You think they will need it?”

Haemis pondered that question for a moment while his team scrambled to work on getting their own ship in line. He shook his head. “No, let’s see what the Captain decides, for now let’s deal with our own. We need to get that shield generator back online!” He pulled an engineering kit off a spot on the wall and nodded. “I’ll get to work on that, as soon as all our other damage is secured send me some help!” he said as he headed out the door.

Haemis stood staring down at the console at the power distribution readings his mind ablaze thinking about the engineering crew and the potential loss of life on the Coronado, then something slowly started to creep into his feelings, dread. He stood erect looking around the engine room his eyes darting from place to place, and to the various nearby consoles. "Caity..." he said.

"Huh?" she asked looking up from her console.

He blinked at her a few times, pondering what he should say. "I want you to do a quick walk of the impulse systems, and life support right now, look for anything out of the ordinary." he said, then pulled one out himself and began configuring it to scan for substances that were not natural to Starfleet technologies. "I'm going to take a look around here." he said.

He activated the scanner, and set it to a short range more precise scan, and walked to the door as Caity exited. Slowly he started walking the length of room, towards the Warp Reactor. He fished a hand up and hit his communicator. "McTavish to..." he had to think of his name. "Crewman Akig!" he said.

There was a momentary pause. "Akig here!"

"Crewman, get a tricorder! I want you to take a scan of our defensive system spaces. Make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary! Quickly"

"Is this because of what happen.." he started but Haemis cut him off.

"Quickly Crewman, no time for chatter Lad!" he said closing the channel with a quick tap. He slowly made the circuit around the engine room, then stepped onto the small elevator to take him to the upper level continuing his scan.

Haemis hit his communicator again. "McTavish to Petty Officer Peers!" he said stopping and adjusting his scanner.

"Peers here chief!" came the young Trills voice.

"Get a tricorder, I want ye to go to the computer core, and scan for anything out of the ordinary!" he said.

"Aye sir, on it!" she said with a hint of determination and excitement. He heard the tell tale beep of the channel closing.

He followed up again, "McTavish to Lieutenant Larson!" he was making an effort to not start a panic but contacting each team member directly and trying to convey the sense of urgency without giving too much away.

It took a moment before the mans deep voice called back. "Larsen, go ahead!"

"Mr. Larson, take a tricorder and visit the Main life support system spaces and take scans looking for anything out of the ordinary!" he said.

"Aye, Larson out!" called back the baritone voice.

Haemis finished his circuit and stopped now looking down at the warp core through the glass floor, his attention on the scanner as it provided him with the results of the scan. "Please be bloody negative!" he said under his breath.

USS Peregrine, Bridge - 1055

Haemis stood at the pool table watching as the ships power distribution center did its job switching the vessels internal power systems over for combat shutting down what non-essential systems were not needed to store it for reserves. He made a few adjustments before queuing up a one way open communications channel to the bridge to listen in on what was happening. He piped it through the Engine room's speaker's. He stared intently at the screen waiting for the damage to potentially start rolling in, he glanced across the table at his assistant. "Bloody wait'n!" he said with a half smile.

She nodded in return. "It's part of the job, I've gotten used to it."

He shook his head suddenly. Ack, no! You never get used to it! You get used to it canna make ye complacent. That is a bad thing." he said shaking a finger. He pointed up at the ceiling as if there was a speaker above. "That will give us a lead on where we need to send traffic, and keep us on our toes. Tis a wee trick my old boss used on the Coronado."

Haemis glanced down at his console once more to check power distribution, it was a green board for the moment. Part of him was hoping that it might stay that way, but at the same time he wanted to see how his new engine crew would handle things. They had not yet had an emergency aside from what happened with the old chief engineer.

"Captain, I'm detecting a significant explosion aboard the Coronado! I'll need to see the official damage report, but it appears that the explosion may have involved their torpedo launcher! Their shields are holding, but are significantly weakened - they are down to sixty-two percent capacity." Haemis heard Lasad's voice over the speakers, and he looked up with shocked look that even surprised him. He moved to an auxillary console and pulled up a live feed from the sensors and stared at the vessel, its shields were intact and still buzzing with debris bouncing off of them, a scar of jagged metal and flotsam now gracing the area where the vessels torpedo launcher was.

"Bloody el!" he gasped, staring at the damage to his former home. "That just does not happen!"

"I thought you hated that ship?" he heard Caity's voice call from his side.

He blinked a moment. "No love lost lass, but I wouldna wished that on my worst enemy!" he said moving back to his station. "Though I didnna get along with my old CO, and I'm still a bit off about my ol boss but I don't wanna see them hurt!" he said. "Do me a favor and see if you can piggy back any scans that the bridge might be doing of that and let's be ready in case we have to render them aid."

Haemis's eyes found the power distribution information, but his mind was on the Coronado, which was something he rightly didn't expect.

Haemis strolled into the engine room with a couple of Padd's in one hand and a travel mug in the other. He stopped as he entered observing the vessels warp core suddenly change octets and reduce in cycles. He crossed the rest of the distance to the pool table and stopped taking a quick glance over the readings and nodded. He noted they had dropped out of Warp normally so they must have reached their destination he figured, he could see the change in power output to the impulse drive happen as he started to walk past the table and into his office. More like a closet he mused to himself, but it was a thing. He deposited the padd's on his desk and took a moment to savor a quick drink of liquid caffeine.

"Hey chief." A voice called his attention, and he turned to meet his assistants gaze.

"Wha can I do for ye?" he asked taking another drink.

She held out another Padd to him which Haemis took and brought up the information. "I was thinking we could take some time later in the week to work on that faulty sensor pallet on the port side, that Wide-angle EM radiation imaging scanner is still acting up!"

He nodded. "Right, I'll run it by the Exec when I have the opportunity just to make sure we can take the thing offline and it won't bother the science department. Donna wanna cause a tiff." He said nodding.

Haemis was opening his mouth to speak when the vessels Red Alert Klaxon began blaring and the vessel began switching power distribution profiles for combat. "Station!" he said pointing. He took only a moment to leave his mug behind as he moved out into the engine room and came to stand next to the pool table. His Engineering crew began going through their routine. "Caity, keep an eye on Damage Control, I'll work power distribution." He said moving around to one of the consoles.

She simply nodded, and moved to take up a position opposite of him. "Isn't this supposed to be a diplomatic missions?" she said glancing up.

He nodded looking up to meet her eyes. "Aye lass, appears that they are about to turn aggressive. Let's be ready for the damage to start rolling in." She nodded and turned her attention back to the console. He glanced around as the rest of his team came running and jogging into the engine room taking up their stations related to their focus. "Tis time to shine." He muttered to himself. He took a moment to send a signal to the bridge indicating that Engineering was 'manned and ready'.

Haemis paused at the offer of a meal, it didn't dawn on him until the mention of food that he might be hungry. His stomach let out an approving gurgle. He looked back up from it to John and gave a nod. "Aye," he smiled. "I think I've been a wee neglectful in that area today. Too much on my mind. I'd be happy to join ye." he said and started for the door. "Nine months is a long time. But yer right with small crews ifnya have the interest there is a lot that can be learned." he stepped out into the corridor and waited for his companion.

As John exited, he fell in line with him strolling down the hall heading towards the galley.

"Where were you stationed before the Peregrine?" he asked. "I had the pleasure of serving aboard the bloody Coronado. That in itself was a long bloody learning experience." he moved aside as someone came down the corridor to allow them to pass as they moved down the hall. "My only regret is leaving behind my ol' chief. He was a damn fine engineer. I can only hope to live up to half of the engineer he is I'd be happy." he smiled. "He was also a good swordsman. Great partner to spar with and fight along side. It's been a long time since I had someone like that. Sure it wont be the last of course." he held up his hands and started moving them around. "He used to anticipate me which is why it worked. There was this one time when we were squaring off against to from the Security team on the Lincoln." his grin broadened. "They were very good! But we were better because of it. It was like a natural thing. We bumped them off to face off with Captain Grumpy pants on the Coronado. I think he was not happy about that fact. He wasn't shy about it that's for sure" he realized very suddenly that he was running at the mouth and stopped himself to give the man a chance to respond. "I'm sorry, sometimes I get started and I canna stop."

Haemis laughed again, reaching across he slipped his hand around the mans wrist and shook it in a good proper warriors shake. "Haemis McTavish, chief engineer." he released the mans grip and laid back on the mat. "Pleased to meet you Lieutenant Reed. Yer pretty good with a stick laddie. Be interesting to see what you could do with a sword." he took a moment, then slowly sat back up. "How long have ye been aboard the Peregrine?" he slowly stood up and walked over to pick up the staff and return it to the case they were kept in.

Haemis offered the man a curt smile as he took a step back away from his opponent. He adjusted the staff in his hands and nodded. "I've a good teacher." he said. He lashed out quickly spinning the staff bringing it across for another shoulder strike which the man deftly blocked sending him wide, he felt the stink of the staff across his flank and spun bringing the staff vertical to stop the next. He continued rolling to his right and swung the staff end down from left to right, then brought the bottom end up the same path, both knocked aside.

Haemis found himself suddenly on the defensive, blocking a flurry of blows from his opponent. He saw and opening and did manage to get a glancing blow off the mans thigh but paid for it as he took a hit to the shoulder, then his own thigh for it. He spun away from the attack and ducked another shoulder strike and spun the bow to deflect another. He was back on his heels again and he knew it. He backpedaled around the mat desperately blocking. He took a very sudden leap back allowing the bow to slide to its end from momentum and the snapping blow caught his partner by surprise as it bounced off his shoulder. Though he fell to his butt as he lost his footing upon landing from the reverse leap, his bow clattering to the ground. He sat there and laughed for a long moment.

Stardate 2365.02.09 (Tuesday - 42137.6)
USS Peregrine; Deck 5, Gym - 1805

John stepped into gym to in time to see new crew member step away from the heavy bag ,. He picked up a large weighted chunk of metal, much like a sword with a hilt, but a round barrel instead of a blade. It was weighted for training as if it were a sword but more for the weight. He began dancing around the mat as though running through exercises he had done so many times before. He swung the chunk of metal and it rebounded bouncing off the punching bag stopping him. He stood staring at the bag, for a good long time the chunk of metal held much as if he was squaring off with an opponent, close to his body, upright ready for what was to come.

With a bit of admiration and a slight chuckle John said, "I think you killed it!"

In a warm brogue, "Not entirely." he said taking a step back and a deep breath. His cheeks were a bit rosy. "But tha will teach it!" he said pointing his practice weapon at the bag. "Shouldn't sneak up on unsuspecting individuals swing'n large weapon's." he said shaking the sword at it. He moved back towards the middle of the mat hazarding a glance at who it is that was addressing him.

Setting his bag down John advanced to the mat extending his hand. "I'm John,ya care to try to hitting something that hits back?........ I need to work off a bit a steam,,,care to indulge a bit in the "Manly Art" of quarter staffs?

Haemis glanced at the chunk of metal in his hands and then back at John nodding. "Sounds like fun!" he said and nodded, he took but a moment to set the weighted sword down in a safe place.

"We have a nice selection of equipment in the storage next to the boxing gear. " Walking the case John open the door revealing several eight foot staffs and required head and body gear. "Star Fleet requires curtain precautions, but it's pretty much the same as it was back in 1880's England. Head gear and padding."

Showing the man a variety of staffs, "As it is my challenge, I'll let you have first choice of weapon." Stand in brilliant array were gleaming hardwood and bamboo staffs from various planets.

He approached the box and took a glance at the interior he actually wasn't sure if they were replicated material or not but they certainly looked original, he could even smell the stain that was used coming out of the box, it was subtle but there. It brought a smile to his lips, he nodded and plucked one of the staff from the box and felt its weight. "Not exactly my area of expertise, but I think I can manage to put up a decent fight." he said, and began putting on the safety gear. "Where did you learn this art?" he asked moving toward the other side of the mat, taking a few swings with the staff. He turned and set himself, allowing the staff to hang across his body in one hand while he did the strap to the head guard.

(a place for you to respond)

Haemis took the staff in both hands, and gave him a salute and held the staff at the ready. He was not prepared for the agility of John, his first strike coming swiftly, it was all Haemis could do to get his stick up to stop his opponent from smashing him across the head or shoulder.

Shifting his feet he nearly took another blow that came from the side, then found himself on his back looking up at John. He had been swept from his feet in a fluid motion on what Haemis could only have guessed was a pivot and back swing low at his feet.

Slowly he got to his feet, and took a deep breath and set himself again. This was a lot more swift than a sword that was certain. But his eyes were starting to play catch up, blocking a bit more easy but still not exact. He circled the man and smiled. "Your very good!" he said.

USS Peregrine; Deck 5, Gym - 1800

Haemis stared at the punching bag, its surface was marred by the passage of time and use. It was clearly well used, his tapped up hands clenched tightly into fists he continued giving the bag the good old 'left-right' combo. He could hear his fathers voice echoing in his head with each punch, mostly white noise, but that word 'failure' always managed to sneak through. He punished the bag, now putting some footwork into it bashing the thing causing it to swing. Realizing this he began to move his feet and dance around the bag landing punches as it became opportune, then dodging another way hammering away at the thing. An elbow, snap kick, round house, he was giving it all to the bag. His breathing was well trained, he had trained hard with his siblings and his father for the longest time, but despite all that his first love came to building and fixing things. His father would never come close to understanding what that meant to him. Which is why his letter hurt him more deeply so.

Stepping away from the swinging back he took his towel from the bench and wiped away the perspiration from his face, then tossed it aside all the same. He picked up a large weighted chunk of metal, much like a sword with a hilt, but a round barrel instead of a blade. It was weighted for training as if it were a sword but more for the weight. He began dancing around the mat with, running through exercises he had done so many times before. That voice still pestering him inside. He swung the chunk of metal and it rebounded bouncing off the punching bag stopping him. Breaking his concentration, or lack there of. He stood staring at the bag, for a good long time the chunk of metal held much as if he was squaring off with an opponent, close to his body, upright ready for what was to come.

"I think you killed it!" he heard a voice call from across the room.

"Not entirely." he said taking a step back and a deep breath. His cheeks were a bit more rosy than they were previously. "But tha will teach it!" he said pointing his practice weapon at the bag. "Shouldn't sneak up on unsuspecting individuals swing'n large weapon's." he said shaking the sword at it. He moved back towards the middle of the mat hazarding a glance at who it is that was addressing him.

Stardate 2365.02.09 (Tuesday 42138.7)
USS Peregrine; Deck 2 - Main Engineering (Lower) - 15:00

Haemis sat at one of the consoles off to the side of the Engine room. He had his feet up on the edge of the console and he had spent the last half hour pulling apart an Optical Data network junction box that had failed some time ago and was sitting on a parts shelf waiting repairs. He liked to tinker when time permitted, sure he could break the part down in a replicator and have it re-created but what fun would that be. Besides it got his mind off of other things.

He wasn't shy about his other habit while working either. Granted he didn't have the voice of a true singer, but he dabbled. Especially songs from home.

"I've heard the lilting, at the yowe-milking
Lasses a-lilting before dawn o' day;
But now they are moaning on ilka green loaning;
The flowers of the forest are a' wede away"

He popped off one of the data processor housings and began pulling the isolinear banks, and carefully matching each to its replacement, he began installing them.

"As buchts, in the morning, nae blythe lads are scorning;
The lasses are lonely and dowie and wae.
Nae daffin', nae gabbin', but sighing and sobbing.
Ilk ane lifts her leglen, and hies her way."

He begins running an calibration tool across each of the new isolinear banks he's installed to ensure they are calibrated correctly for the unit.

"In hairst, at the shearing, nae youths now are jeering,
The Bandsters are lyart, and runkled and gray.
At fair or at preaching, nae wooing, nae fleechling,
The Flowers of the forest are a' wede away."

He took a moment to take a drink from his coffee mug sitting on the console, and replaced the housing securing it with the magnetic driver.

"At e'en, in the gloaming, nae swankies are roaming,
'Bout stacks wi' the lasses at bogle to play.
But ilk ane sit drearie, lamenting her dearie,
The flower of the Forest are a' wede away."

He ran a testing tool over each of the power connections and data connections to ensure that they would at pass signal and power proper.

"Dule and wea for the order sent our lads to the Border;
The English , for ance, by guile wan the day;
The Flowers of the forest, that foucht aye the foremost,
The prime o' our land are cauld in the clay."

He plugged in the united to some test lines connected to the console, and started a diagnostic sequence which would power the unit, run test data looped through it and then run a stress test to ensure the processor would provide the necessary output.

"We'll hae nae mair lilting, at the yowe-milking,
Women and bairns are dowie and wae.
Sighing and moaning, on ilka green loaning.
The flowers of the forest are all wede away."

He nodded to himself in satisfaction both at the completion of the song, and the successful test of the ODN junction unit. Glancing over his shoulder he spotted both Caity Morgan, and Merida peers looking his way. "What?" he asked. "Your old comrades never sang while working?" he asked.

They both looked at each other and shook their heads. Caity spoke first. "No, cannot say that I have ever worked with an engineer that sang. Hummed maybe. Even recited random engineering procedures, but never sang."

Petty officer peers just shook her head. "Nope."

He laughed. "Get used to it! But if it really bother's ye just let me know."

Caity shook her head again, "No, it's not bother."

He nodded. "Well ye have been warned." he said as he stood, and picked up the unit disconnecting it from it's diagnostic cables. "I'll just put this away for a rainy day!' he said and headed over to the part's storage closet and deposited it back on the shelf. He stepped out of the room and proceeded to clean his work space. After disconnecting his test equipment and putting it away, he came to stand at the pool table giving it a once over. "Well. I have paperwork that need's do'n." he glanced over at Caity. "If'n ya need me I'll be in my quarters." he said. "She's all yours." he turned and exited the engine room and headed back towards his quarters.

Stardate 2365.02.09 (Tuesday 42138.7)
USS Peregrine; Deck 2 - Lieutenant Haemis Falkirk McTavish Quarters - 15:30

'Well that is another day down, I've not been spaced or put to a court martial. So far so good.' he thought to himself as he moved back towards his quarters. After the short walk he punched in the code to the door and walked in hitting the button to bring the lights up in his spartan cabin. He dropped down behind the desk and activated his desktop computer. "Computer access Chief engineer's duty log, and prepare to record." he said and waited for the coming beep.

"Chief Engineer's Duty Log, Stardate: 2365.02.09. Today was a successful day, the ship has not exploded. Systems are functioning very well, and in some cases extremely so which is a testament to my predecessor. He ran a good crew, granted some are different due to rotation at our last layover but they seem to be a good bunch. I had some serious trepidation when I came aboard, but that has past. I'm looking forward to what the next day brings. I did manage to get some diagnostics completed, we are still on schedule with maintenance, and that ODN Junction box which was sitting in the parts room has been repaired. Figured I'd save some replicator resources. End Duty Log."

Haemis sat back and looked up at the ceiling, lost in thought for several minutes. He nodded. "Computer Begin Personal log!" he said and waited for the beep to follow.

"Personal Log, Stardate: 2365.02.09. I survived my first day aboard ship, well my first real day. I kind of feel like my first day needed a bit of a do over. And I think I kind of got that. Though the diplomatic function was memorable. That right bastard back on the Coronado!" Haemis paused glancing back up at the ceiling. "You would think after so many centuries that the Human race has been alive and kick'n that we would have evolved passed the point of some of our more immature tendencies, but no. I came aboard this ship with expectations that were set by rumors and scuttlebutt. It could have easily cost me something special here." he looked back down at the computer. "The Captain is not at all who I expected. It goes to show that you cannot believe everything you hear no matter who it comes from. But isn't that the nature of what continues to happen on the Coronado?" he blinked and shifted in his chair uneasy. "Either way, I will miss some of my shipmates however I have no regrets about what I did. We have paths set before us for a reason. This may have just been here I was supposed to be heading." he gestures around his Spartan quarters. "What's not to like!" he slowly sits forward, his mood shifting. "I got a letter from my father. Likely to be my last. All duty, honor, and family. My Court Martial has seen to my final straw with him it would seem. Bloody bastard! He never understood me! Ever since I made the decision to opt out of security he has been this way. He seems to think he disowned me just now, it was back then. I suppose that makes my life easier, no one to impress but myself and perhaps my Captain." he glances down at his desk. "But it bloody well hurts. I thought I would be ok with it, but it feels like he ripped my heart out of my chest." he sits back heavily in his chair. "Tomorrow is another day. End Personal Log!" he said.

Haemis sat for a long while staring at his computer screen, he was angry. He knew he was angry but it was tempered anger. Simmering, and subsiding. He took a deep breath. Taking up one of the PADD's on his desk he stood quickly downloading the most recent edition of 'Starfleet Engineers Weekly' and he departed heading for the ships lounge. It was time for coffee and some reading he decided.

Stardate 2365.02.09 (Tuesday)
USS Peregrine; Deck 2; Main Engineering, Jefferies tube

Haemis laid back against the bulkhead in the Jefferies tube, the soothing vibration of the ships engines touching his body. He scrolled through the list of items that still needed to be completed today which were mostly routine Diagnostics It was nice to be on a ship that wasn't falling apart. He would never tell anyone that about the Coronado despite how he felt about her Captain, the chief and he took pride in the work they did. That ship needed a constant touch.

He heard a beep from one of his other Padd's he had laying about him. He had pretty much decided that this was going to be his office. His special spot where he could work and be apart from the rest of the vessels hullabaloo. He had even brought a pillow with him this time which was being used to prop his head up on the bulkhead behind him. "Right." he said to himself. "Mail!" he keyed the mail open, it was from his father. Not exactly the person he wanted to hear from...

You can't keep your nose clean boy, I have to find out like this from the office of Starfleet Personnel! That you've been transferred off the Coronado and sent to mast? Your a bloody disgrace boy! Never has a member of this family been shamed in such a way. You cant even write to tell me yourself, where is your honor. Don't bother coming home. Don't write. I don't know you boy!

Haemis stared at the Padd, his heart dropped into his chest. "Damn!" he said. "I canna do right by you, well good on ya!" he said at the padd, his muscles flexed and the padd made a wrenching sound as it split in two. He tossed the pieces down the shaft and laid his head back against the back of the wall. "Damn!" he said bouncing a fist off the floor.

Haemis had not had a great relationship with his father, most of his family had taken jobs, important jobs said his father. Starfleet Security was where honor was found. When men served! He chose a different path because of his love of fixing things. He'd done it since he was a boy. He trained hard with his sisters and father but his love was engineering. His father couldn't understand it. But then with all the trouble he had in the Academy and now this with the Coronado, his father had just shunned him.

Haemis turned and crawled out of the Jefferies tube, it wasn't far back to Main Engineering. He stepped out of the maintenance room and exited the engine room without looking back. He headed towards the turbolift. After a brief stroll he stepped into the lift. "Bridge" he said. He leaned against the wall lost in his own thoughts and nearly missed getting off the lift at the bridge. He moved back towards the engineering station where he settled into the chair and began running the battery of diagnostics. What he needed right now was busy work.

USS Peregrine Deck 2 - Captains Mess 19:18

I suppose we should be grateful that neither of our peoples have had access to these war machines, the Rytainian dignitary says sourly through a weak smile as he endures his counterparts touch. You did mention, Lieutenant McTavish, that the Peregrines cruising speed is warp seven. What would be her maximum speed?

Haemis finished off his drink and smiled warmly. "Tis a fast ship. But her top speeds are classified if memory serves. Without know'n what I'm allowed to divulge I hope you understand that I canna give ye that information. But I can tell ya she's fast." he shifted his weight fighting that nervous feeling at being in a crowd, even a small one. "Ifinya get the chance and the Capt'n approves it, we can look into getting you a tour. They might already have one lined up for ye." he snagged another drink as they passed with a tray. "These are quite good, have ye had one yet?" he asked looking at the glass.

((Room for any response you like...))

He continues staring at the liquid for a long moment as if remembering something. The last time he actually drank much of anything was at a friends wedding prior to the posting on the Coronado. it was a small affair, just a few tents in a park in the middle of Washington, some park he couldn't remember the name of. He did recall that it had a wonderful view. "Hurricane Ridge!" he said randomly remembering the name. "That was the place..." he said under his breath snapping his fingers. "Lieutenant Pressman, and his bride to be. That's where I remember something like this from..." he pointed to the drink. "Ach, memories. Sometimes harder to pull data from than a fried isolinar chip!" he shook his head a moment again realizing he's rambling.

Stardate 2365.02.09 (Tuesday)
USS Peregrine; Deck 2; Lieutenant Haemis McTavish Quarters - 0527

"The time is oh five hundred twenty seven hours." echoed in the back of Haemis's mind. Then became more clear as his alarm repeated itself. He glanced up over a pillow, bleary eyed.

"Bloody ell!" he said hitting his head into the pillows several times. The night prior rushed back, to his embarrassment he only remembered having three of those drinks but they seemed to mix well with his body chemistry. He groaned and slowly slipped out of his bed like a wet noodle to the floor and lay there on his back for a long moment. Even without alcohol Haemis was not a morning person.

"The time is oh five hundred twenty eight hours..." followed by several beeps.

"Computer, shut that damn thing off!" he said flinging a boot at the wall. Slowly he got up and started collecting some cloths and started getting dressed for duty. Today was starting off well. It would likely be breakfast on the go.

It took Haemis a few minutes to get dressed, run a comb through his hair and rush out the door. He made his way down the hall and toward engineering. "Ach, no more of that!" he said to himself under his breath.

He passed through the doors to engineering and offered a nod to one of his staff who looked at him quizzically. "Good Morning sir!" he said, a smile starting to spread.

"Wha?" Haemis asked glancing around. "What is it Petty Officer Peers?"

She pointed, and his eyes followed. He looked down and found that he was wearing a pair of shorts instead of pants. He blinked, and held up a finger. "Alright, this didna happen. I'mma go fix this, and will be right bloody back." he frowned and turned and exited Engineering. He walked back the distance to his quarters, picked up the other 'black' looking pants this time taking a moment to confirm they indeed were duty pants and put them on. This was one of those moments in time he was grateful he didn't have bridge duty.

A short walk and he was back in engineering, there was a bit more going on as Lieutenant Morgan was already handing out assignments. "Good Morning Ms. Morgan." he said standing up to the pool table. "How are we look'n today?"

"Well, while the rest of us reported for duty on time and in uniform..." she said with a grin. "Assignments are out, not a lot on the agenda that isn't standard maintenance. Looks like it might be an easy day." she offered with a nod.

Haemis blushed red a bit and shot Petty Officer Peers a glance, whom summarily escaped engineering as quickly as she could would brought a laugh to some of the other's still around. "Aye. Thank you for taking care of doling out assignments. Much appreciated."

"Don't worry boss, your secret is as safe as scuttlebutt will allow for..." she said heading off to a task of her own.

He shook his head. "Bloody ell." he checked the to do list for the day and noted that everything was pretty much accounted for. He took a moment to look over the duty roster, it was near time already to submit a new one especially with all the changes. He nodded, and began to fill out a shift chart.

This was one of those tasks he'd seen his boss on the Coronado do a hundred times and even was able to do it himself a few times with his supervision. Of course every time he had completed one the Captain seemed to overturn it and send it back to his boss. Which aggravated him to no end. But it was the Captains prerogative. He settled in staring at the thing trying to decide how he was going to go about this with such a small crew. This would be interesting.

USS Peregrine Deck 2 - Captain's Mess - 19:14

"What about the weapons compliment?" D'Lar presses. "When we were first introduced to the two vessels upon which our delegation and ourselves now journey, we were informed that the USS Coronado doesn't carry quite the load out that the USS Peregrine carries and yet, the USS Coronado is a much larger ship."

The blue-skinned beauty's antennae lean forward and she unconsciously chews on the inside of her bottom lip. Such questions were usually considered rude within the Andorian culture, but she is unsure as to Terran's, or, for that matter, Kuldaran's and Rhytanians. Tread carefully, Mr. McTavish, she internally cautions.

Haemis Smiled Warmly. "Ah, everyone want's to know about the guns! Ye see we might be wee compared to the Coronado but the Peregrine is a sight newer." he took a moment to take a drink. "I canna really go into specifics about our defensive systems, you understand. Security'n all. What I can tell ye is ye have no fear, we can hold our own in a fight." he said in a reassuring tone. "I can tell ya even for a small ship, she's got ample appointments. You don't often find guest quarters for instance on a vessel of this size." he took another drink. "Ah, and state of he art Holosuites. They may be a sight small but they make up for it in the technology put into them."

(a brief pause in case one of the ambassadors wish to reply)

"I don't believe I've had the pleasure of seeing yer vessels yet?" his smile broadened. "I bet they are incredibly facinatin." he looked up for a moment. "I remember the first time I got my hands on a Klingon Bird of Prey, now that was a challenge. I don't much care for how simple they engineer but they are very functional and efficient. Not to mention one of those..." he pauses realizing he's starting to ramble. "My apologizes, ye get me started on engineering and I might go all night."

Haemis stood with a hand on his chin staring at one of the displays. "Mr. Davis isn't it?" he asked looking over his shoulder.

"Aye sir." the Master Chief said turning his direction.

"This is some good work here." he said looking over the Impulse systems display. "Maintenance schedule is impeccable." he nodded. "Very good work Mister."

The Master chief smiled. "Thank you sir. We do need to work on the number three fusion reactor still. It's functional but not exactly where I'd like it." he pointed. "It's a problem with this EPS Power shunt, I think we just need to go ahead and replace it. But that reactor isn't due to swap out for another four hundred hours."

Haemis nodded. "Is it something that is mission critical?" he asked glancing sideways at him.

The young enlisted man shook his head. "No, it can wait. The shunt runs off to an EPS Power Tap Distribution block and into non critical systems."

Hamis nodded. "Good lad, carry on." he moved deeper into the engine room and stood staring at the Warp Core for a long moment, listening to it pulse. He loved that sound, broke his heart if he had to not hear it. The engine was like a mothers heartbeat to a child. He closed his eyes and looked up the shaft then down over the rail.

"Loose something Chief?" he heard the woman's voice call to him from behind.

Haemis shook his head and turned around to greet the woman. "Lieutenant Morgan, how are ye this fine morn'n?"

She considered her response. "It's morning?"

"Indeed." he gestured back over towards the pool table, "So not much on the agenda today, routine maintenance. I've set aside a few items for me to take care of, your welcome to delegate out the rest." he said sending the list to her via the ships internal messaging system.

She nodded, "Alright." her hands flew across the console calling up the list, she immediately began sending out tasks to the other engineers on the team. "I'm going to send McGivern to do that sensor pallet check, shes been idle far too long for my liking."

"Just let me know if you need me for anything," he picked up a kit and slung it over his shoulder. "I'm going to go take a look at an EPS power tap that's been trigger'n my engineering OCD." he headed for the door. "Don't breach the core while I'm out." he said with a chuckle as he departed engineering leaving her to delegate the rest of the tasks.

She blinked at that last comment, looking up from the console. "Ok, that was different."

"Not exactly what I would have expected." Master Chief Davis said turning from his console. "He was so... Isolated the other day."

Caity Morgan stared at the doors where the new Assistant Engineer just disappeared. "Yeah. Well, lets not jinx it." she said glancing back down at the console, she continued to dispatch tasks for the day.

Haemis blinked, that 'deer in the headlights' look gracing his facial features. He craned his head towards the sound of his name being called out and spotted the ships executive officer and who he could only guess might be an ambassador or part of the group they were escorting or transporting. He summoned his courage with a quick breath, and headed over towards the group.

"Good Even'n." he says with a bow. "Lieutenant Haemis McTavish, but my friends call me Mac." he extended a hand to those he had not yet had the pleasure of meeting. "Well now, this is some gather'n I hope your finding yourself well at ease with our gallant crew here."

(room for a response if ye like.)

"Well now, your request..." he pauses thinking a moment. "This here vessel may be wee, but she's got a bit of a bite to her. Most people underestimate ships like this because of their size. Never underestimate the ingenuity of a small crew and a fast ship!" he ponders something a moment. "She has a normal cruis'n speed of Warp Seven, and can hold a fair high clip for a long while yet. I've no had the opportunity to get my hands on much yet so we might be able to do better." He paused realizing he was running at the mouth. He didn't drink that often, and knew he was a bit of a light weight so he may have overestimated the drink he was given. "Is there someth'n in particular you'd like to know about?"

(Just trying to get caught up now....)

Haemis stood over his console starting at it intently, he was watching the ships power consumption and distribution feeds trying to find something that caught his eye just after he came on duty. He loved little mysteries like this but in truth was an absolute love hate relationship. Once he glimpsed something, he had to see it happen again, examine it, figure out what was making it do that thing it was doing.

He clapped a hand to the side of the console, "HA!" he exclaimed loudly causing one of the other engineers to jump. He pointed accusingly at it "You! I see ye!" he looked up at the other engineer. "There is a wee variation in power flow efficiency. I'd wager tha its a failing EPS power tap. Bloody things are hard to see before they go about their business giving us a bad day!" he quickly made a note in the maintenance log to check that specific tap.

A beep from the console pulled his attention, it was an alert that he had a meeting with the Captain. "Oie." he said and quickly departed the engine room leaving the rest of the engineers to fend for themselves.

The door chime sounded precisely on time, and at Drake's admonition, the hatch slid open to reveal Lieutenant McTavish. There's something to be said for punctuality, Silas mused.

The Captain stood and offered his hand to the big man, then indicated the seat across from his desk. Taking his own seat, Drake spoke.

Haemis gave the captain a firm shake, and nodded taking a seat. "Morn'n Cap'n"

"Thank you for joining me, Lieutenant McTavish," he began. "As you may have gathered," he continued, "I'm not much of one for subtlety or silken phrases. As such, I would prefer to cut right to the chase."

The Captain paused for a brief moment. "First off, we need to go ahead and make it formal - you are no longer the acting Chief Engineer, but simply the Chief Engineer of the USS Peregrine. From what I understand, Commander Thorson may be on extended medical leave, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that he will never again serve as Chief Engineer of a starship. It won't do for you to feel like you are simply keeping your seat warm for someone else; I believe that you will do your best work when you - and your people - understand that you are permanently in charge." A wry smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Well, as permanent as anything in Starfleet, at any rate. Speaking of which..."

The Captain paused for a moment, allowing his gaze to drift along the ship models mounted on the walls of the Ready Room before looking McTavish in the eye once more. He opened his mouth as if to speak, closed it again, then frowned. "Lieutenant," he finally spoke, "the second thing we must discuss is that I absolutely owe you an apology. Yesterday was truly the most trying day I have endured as commanding officer of this vessel; in the span of twenty four hours, I literally lost every single department head outside of Lieutenant Zai. Then, when I heard that you had come from the Coronado... well, I assumed a few things. In compliance with at least part of the old saying, in assuming I did at least make an ass of me."

Drake chucked slightly and held up a hand to forestall any response from McTavish. "It is the truth, and I am sorry for not welcoming you warmly to begin with. Now then," Drake gestured to the PADD on his desk, "I have taken the liberty of reviewing your personnel file - which I should have done before I met with you yesterday. It seems that you left the Coronado on less than ideal terms with Captain Jacobs?"

Haemis was nearly floored by the Captains words, it was not exactly what he expected to hear this morning let along at all. He had been so used to being under a Captain who apologized for not. It took him a moment to compose his thoughts. "Aye sir, that is correct. There was a tournament, medieval combat amongst the crew and some others via the holodeck. The Chief Engineer of the Coronado and I defeated him. He didna like it. Technically I didn't hit him. The chief stepped in. He however made the chief bring charges. I don't blame the chief, he had no choice. Captain Jacobs was not a good sport. No love lost there either."

Again, the wry grin tugged at the corner of the Captain's mouth. "If you haven't already heard, the scuttlebutt will reach you soon enough; it is no secret that Captain Jacobs and I are not exactly the closest of friends." The Captain gave a self deprecating chuckle.

"More accurately," he continued, "Jacobs has never liked me, neither on a personal nor professional level. He makes no secret of the fact that he does not believe me fit for command of any vessel. As such, my initial thought was that he had pulled strings to plant you as eyes and ears aboard my ship." Drake paused, and a twinkle touched his eye for a moment. "Of course, that was before I learned that you struck him, which led to your transfer."

Haemis shifted nervously in his chair listening to the man. He nodded, "Twas certainly a laps in judgement. And forgive my bluntness but he got what he deserved. Ye wont find it in any account or record but tha man is cruel, and if anyone is not fit to Capt'n t'would be that..." he stopped to consider his words carefully. "Person..."

"Now then," Drake continued, "I could certainly never officially condone such an action. But then... I was not there when it happened, so I will not pretend to be capable of passing judgment on the situation - nor will I pretend to not understand what could lead one to such an action." The Captain cleared his throat. "We've all made mistakes, mister McTavish; what is important is how we conduct ourselves going forward. So then, with your permission, I would like to wipe the slate clean, to start over. Welcome aboard the Peregrine, Lieutenant McTavish. Go make the Engineering department your own, and enjoy the break before I ask you to work some miracle of technology."

"Sir," he looked down at the floor a moment again stopping to consider his words. "I believe we've both been lead to believe things that they may not be. In my own anger and honestly believe'n tha stuff that was circulat'n on the Coronado about the two of you, well." he frowned at the thought that he had been duped again by that man. "I believe I owe you an apology as well." he shook his head. "When you've been put in a position like that, they get in yer head after a time and you start believing in what is said. Propaganda if ye will." he down at the floor, then back up at Drake. "I will not let you down. If you had or have any doubts as to where my loyalties lie, I hope that through my own actions that I might find your full favor one day. I will do my absolute best. You have my word on that."

Drake stood and offered his hand once more. "Dismissed Lieutenant."

Haemis shook the man's hand firmly again, and bowed his head slightly out of respect. "Thank you sir." he turned and walked towards the door, but stopped a moment, he half turned back. "It was worth it." he nodded again and walked out of the room. Stopping once the doors closed, he took a deep breath. Haemis was surprised at how relieved he suddenly was. Something that had not happened in a while that only recently alcohol had helped with, he was smiling.

Haemis blinked still lost in thought the first time the operations officer asked him what he wanted to drink but was pulled out of his preoccupied state at a second try. He nodded. "Sorry, just lost in me own space." he leaned back in the chair. "Nothin too strong, but something tasty. I'll leave it to yer judgement." he nodded watching the operations officer walk away. Turning back he slowly scanned the room. He stopped as he noted a couple of the officers and whom he assumed was one of the Ambassadors looking his way and chatting. His cheeks flushed read with mild embarrassment not sure what they could be talking about, he shifted his eyes away quickly realizing he was staring back.

He took the offered glass from the Operations officer when they arrived and took a sip from the cup. He smiled looking back up from the glass. "Not bad, we'll keep ye around another week or so right?" he smiled and stood slowly. Perhaps he should at least try and mingle a bit, and this new found liquid courage might actually help that a bit.

USS Peregrine, Jefferies Tube, 18:45

Haemis laid back sprawled out in the jefferies tube, his feet up on an ODN junction box. He could feel the gentle vibrations running through the plating under his back. It always felt great. Reminded him that there was a place in this world that was somewhat tranquil. Reminded him that the ship was alive and purring like a Kitten. It was reassurance that at the moment he needed. The day had been long and certainly not without it's oddities. This was what he needed. He shifted his body and managed to knock over the couple of PADD's he had brought along to read. He had given up on those a bit ago and now just laid there relaxing to the rhythmic thrum of the ships pulse.

"The time is eighteen hundred forty five hours." his comm badge called to him.

Haemis let out a sigh as he sat up and collected the PADD's he had brought with him. He didn't really like diplomatic ventures but the ships current mission meant he was not likely to avoid such things. "Did anyone truly like diplomatic functions?" he thought to himself. The only thing that really made it worth while to him in the past had been the food. But not always. His mind immediately drew back to a diplomatic function he had attended just prior to his assignment on the Coronado, those people ate primarily molds and fungi. It was not his best memory of a diplomatic function to say the least.

He pulled himself up right in the Storage area off main engineering, and pulled his cloths tight before stepping out into Main Engineering. He nodded to the duty officer and exited heading back towards his quarters. One thing he would come to appreciate he knew already was the size of the ship.

He passed another familiar face from the engineering crew as he moved down the corridor and nodded as he passed. He would eventually get everyone's name down. Normally he would have a few weeks to get that or even a few years of working with people before being promoted. Not just being thrown into a position like this. He would most assuredly make the best of a bad situation.

Stepping through the doors to his quarters, Haemis began stripping off his casual ware cloths tossing them on is bed, and pulled a dress uniform out of his closet. He really hated this thing, he felt it looked wrong. Especially for his size. He begrudgingly pulled it on, slipped on his shiny boots and ran a comb through his hair. Nodded to himself in the mirror in approval and departed his quarters all the same.

Haemis stopped at the door to the Captains Mess, glancing up and down the corridor. Part of him was hoping that the ship would go to red alert, or something in engineering would fail but he knew that wasn't going to happen. Not really having been briefed on this, he waded in pushing through the doors as they opened. He pulled his dress uniform tight stopping to survey the small room noting the setup.

Taking a moment he picked up a glass of something from one of the tables that was set up and walked over to the table looking down at the chair that he was assigned. He stared long and hard at the chair. He wasn't sure if it would be bad form for him to sit or wait. He decided that sitting wouldn't hurt for the moment so he settled down in the chair and took in things listening to the conversations going on around him. His mind wasn't really here it was still back at the Starbase all of the sudden. Something about that whole situation still preoccupied his mind.

USS Peregrine - Haemis McTavish Quarters - 18:25

Haemis lay on his bed having dawned some black seat pants and a white long sleeve shirt, he had a slue of PADDs adorned the bed around him. He had downloaded personnel files for the Engineering team aboard the Peregrine to start learning more about his staff. Eventually he would have to face them as the morning would have to come and the usual shift briefing would bring them all together.

"Caity Morgan..." he scanned through her engineering file. "A very bright and quick learning engineering officer. Recommendations, wow. What in the bloody el' are you doing on this boat." he stated flatly as the data scrolled by. The previous chief engineer had a lot of great things to say about this one. There was a reason she was his second.

Tossing the Padd aside He picked up the next and began reading. "Se'tek, Petty Officer 1st Class.. Now that's not something you see everyday. A vulcan that is Enlisted." he read through the file, it was dry as expected with a few entries that made him let out a laugh every so often.

Standing up, he collected five of the padds after tossing Se'tek's into the pile with Morgan's. He slipped on some Jika-tabi style shoes and left passing through the doors to his quarters, a Saint Christopher's neclace dangeled in front of his shirt. Turning a corner he spotted the turbolift and headed for it heading for the engineering room. It would be quiet at this hour down there.

It only took a few moments to reach the engine room, he passed through the doors nodding to one of the crew he recognized from a file Petty Officer Third class Merida Peers, she was one of the damage control team specialist. He offered her a smile. "Evening Petty Officer."

"Hello. You must Lieutenant MacTavish?" she said.

"Aye, that I am!" he said crossing the room to the maintenance room and access to the Jefferies tubes. "Just finding a wee corner to to do some reading. Trying to get to know the file versions of you." he shrugged sheepishly.

"Why not just get to know us?" she asked stopping what she was doing for a moment, leaning against the console.

He stopped halfway through the door and came back out. "That is the intent, but I like to know what skills people have to best utilize people and call on their strengths and know where to help too." he shifted uneasy. "It's just the way I've learned to do things!"

She nodded. "I see. Anything I can help with?"

He nodded. "There is usually a spot on the ship where the magnetic constrictors are just far enough out of alignment that it vibrates somewhat heavily within the jefferies tube. Every ship nearly has one. Just like that gravity plating sweet spot, this is one that vibrates."

"Why in blue blazes would you want that?" her expression shifted to one of confusion.

"It's where I like to think!" he said.

"Don't you have an office for that?" she asked.

He shook his head. "Its not the same!"

She blinked waiting for some kind of joke or punchline perhaps, but realizing he was serious she shrugged. "Uh, subsection thirty one. I've heard Lieutenant Morgan complain that no one can get that section right." she turned back to her console. "If there's anything I can do to help you settle in, let me know." she began working on the task she had when he had gotten there.

He stood there for a moment watching her work then ducked into the maintenance locker and opened the jeffereies tube door and slide in closing it behind him. He crawled his way down the gangway and took a turn heading down the port side of the ship and then he found it. It was perfect. He could feel the tremble running through the floor grating, hear the sub-harmonic resonation, he turned over and laid down on the metal floor looking up at the ODN junction above him in the ceiling, its lights flickering away. Yup, this was the spot. He set the other padds down next to him and began reading on Oerrik Akig, the Saurian Shield Systems specialist. He could already feel his muscles starting to relax and the tension slip away. This was his sweet spot.

USS Peregrine Lounge - 16:20

Haemis set his fork gently down into the bowl in front of him and leaned back in his chair, he glanced around the room slowly taking in the room. He listened to the conversations going on around him for a time drinking his water. Standing up and pulling his work out garb flat he crosses the room to deposit the bowl into the replicator.

Exiting the lounge he quickly made his way back to his quarters, first day was almost behind him. Captain didn't toss him out an airlock, the ship seems to be functioning good. This could be home. The doors to his room shut behind him he checked to see if the shower between him and his neighbor wasn't occupying the thing. He closed the door stripped down jumping in the Sonic Shower. He let the sonic shower massage his body as he leaned up against the back wall of the stall.

"One down, many more to go..." he said to himself.

Turning around he leaned back allowing his back to lay against the back plate, his eyes closed. He waited a long moment in silence, and then he just let it flow from his lips.

"The Sky was clear, the morn was fair."
"Not a breath came over the sea"
"When Mary left her highland home"
"And Wandered forth with me"
"Though flowers decked the mountainside"
"And fragrance filled the vale"
"By far the sweetest flower there"
"Was the rose of Allandale"

"Sweet rose of allandale"
"Sweet rose of allandale"
"by far the sweetest flower there"
"Was the rose of allandale"

"Where'er I wander to the east and to the west"
"And fate began to lower"
"A solace still was she to me"
"In sorrow's lonely hour"
"Through tempest wreck my lonely barque"
"And may rend the quivering sail"
"One maiden warm withstood the storm"
"Twas the rose of allandale"

"And when my feeble lips were parched"
"On Africa's burning sands"
"She whispered hopes of happiness"
"And tales of foreign lands"
"My life had been a wilderness"
"Unblessed by fortune's gales"
"Had fate not linked my lot to her"
"Sweet rose of allandale"

Letting out a deep sigh as the sonic showers cycle comes to an end. He really wanted to restart it again, but that would be just selfish of him and right now he really wanted to be. Pushing open the door to the sonic shower alcove he stepped out into the steaming room wrapping the towel around him and flipped off the privacy light as he moved out into his quarters shutting the adjoining door behind him.

Toweling off he dropped onto his bed and just lay there for a while allowing his body to cool off and just enjoy life for a moment.

((OOC: So sorry for the lack of response recently lots of distractions, ended up in an impromptu move so now that I'm settled I'm hoping to get back into checking this each week. Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - Deck 2: Corridor - 1555

The day had been somewhat long considering the events that had taken place. The engineering staff managed to get the consoles back together in engineering and they tested out well, aside from a few minor maintenance things the day shaped up to be pretty well.

Haemis stepped out of his quarters, he had taken the time to stow his gear and after today's earlier frustrations and stress he needed a release. He had not had time to schedule any time in the holosuites aboard just yet so that was out and he had decided that what he needed right now, very badly was a run. Having dawned his normal work out cloth which consisted of essentially padded armor, he pulled on a weighted back pack. The padded shoes he wore ensured that he wouldn't disrupt anyone while he ran he put in two small plugs in his ears and activated the music, if you happened to hear it you might consider something like today's 'dub step' primarily instrumental music which changed beat and frequency. He stretched his muscle and turned heading clockwise with the ships corridor at a fair jog allowing the weighted pack to settle in. He jogged lightly down the corridor his feet barely making a sound as he moved. His pace was not unsafe, just enough to get his heart rate up.

This ship was a good bit smaller than he was used too but it was all the same to him, just a few more trips around. He often times did the same on the lower decks of the Coronado and that was mostly because the Captain never came down that far regularly without reason. There was technically no regulation against it, and he knew the ship had a gymasium but he hated the things, they were so impersonal. This allowed him to see faces, which right now was what he wanted so he could acclimate to this new crew. Eventually he would have to get up the gumption to start talking to them, but part of Hameis knew this might be very temporary. Oddly enough he feared that now, not just for loosing the job but the curiosity that had suddenly grown from watching the Captain and their breif earlier exchange.

After having made a few circuits he turned into one of the Jefferies tube access doors, and began climbing down toward the lower deck. He would go all the way down, circle the lower deck a few times and climb back up. Then it was time for food.

USS Peregrine - Deck 2: Corridor - 1635

The doors to the ships lounge sprang open as he came to a stop, taking a moment to catch his breath before crossing into the room. He surveyed the lounge, there wasn't too many people and of course he didn't yet recognize anyone but that would likely change soon. He dropped into a chair at an empty table and nodded as the waiter came by.

"Can I get you anything?" regarding Hameis for a moment. "Water perhaps?"

Haemis nodded. "Aye. Room temp ifna ya please!"

The waiter nodded and disappeared to return just a few moments later setting the glass down in front of him along with a glass pitcher. "Anything else?"

"Give me about twenty, then I'll take a Cesar salad! No bloody fish!" he said nodding.

"Alright, i'll be back if you need anything before then just wave." he said walking off leaving him sitting there dabbing his forehead with a towel. He looked down at the backpack on the floor next to him, it was designed to simulate the weight one would carry into combat wearing armor and could be adjusted for other medieval devices. He had used it a lot since his father had gotten it for him many years prior. He had a lot of fond memories with the thing. He smiled taking a long drink from the glass of water. "That's the spot, right their!" he said to himself.

USS Peregrine - Bridge/Engineering Station - 1250

Haemis turned and was about to announce that the power cycle off had taken a far quicker drop off than even he had expected but stopped watching the Captain stroll from his ready room, his mouth closed as he watched what unfolded. Watching the man go from zero to 'somebody's about to die' in a matter of moments was frightening and impressive all int he same breath. Haemis was starting to wonder if the Captain might be part Klingon. To add insult to injury his Ambassadorial party arrived. He did not envy the Captain, not one bit.

Slowly he turned back to his station and began throttling back the ships warp drive revolutions to match idle speed now that the ships internal power levels were nominal. He saved that little macro away for a time they might need it again in the future, and wrote up a quick schedule for Maintenance to check on those docking power couplings jut to ensure there was no thermal damage.

He began looking through recent diagnostic logs, and what appeared to be a diagnostic schedule for the ships systems set up by the previous chief. It was a new crew but Hameis didn't want to change anything more than was needed as their was certainly enough of that to begin with. He nodded at the pre-launch systems checks, it was a different feeling being in this position.

He pulled up the engineering roster and began reading through files trying to learn more about his people and their capabilities. On a ship with this small a crew, he would likely need to call upon their other skills as well. They needed to be ready to work miracles, because that is what was expected of Starfleet Engineers.

He stole a glance around the bridge, it was going to take some getting used to this. New crew, new ship, most people he knew enjoyed it. Hameis wanted a place to call home. Maybe, just maybe this would be it. Assuming he didn't find his way to the bottom of the bowl and out with the waste. He turned back to his reading waiting for the ships departure.

"We're not necessarily in any hurry, lieutenant," the Trill said, "but we do appreciate your input. Make it happen, Mr McTavish; we'd like to see Peregrine at the ready by 1250 hours."

Haemis turned back towards his console. "Aye, aye. Establishing data link with the stations computer and syncing the systems." his hands danced across the engineering console as he established the necessary communications data channel with the stations engineering computer, and linked the draw down system into a program macro he quickly built, he then went about to linking in the ships Matter/Antimatter generation system. "That should just about do it..." he nodded. "He took a breif moment to reconfigure the power coupling between the ship and the station, and started ramping up plasma energy generation on the ship using the macro program, he simply imput the desired completion time and let the computers do the rest.

He sat back in the chair and watched as the program ran, he wanted to ensure no complication occurred. "That's a girl!" he muttered to himself.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room - 1236

For a long moment, it looked like the new engineer would follow Zai out of the Captain's Ready Room, but Drake spoke quickly to prevent that tactic. "Mister McTavish," Silas said flatly, just before the door shut behind the withdrawing XO, "Stay a moment, if you will. Have a seat."

For several long, awkward moments, the Captain allowed the silence to hang heavy in the room as he held the gaze of the acting chief engineer. Maintaining a cold, stony mask, Silas finally spoke in quietly restrained rage. "Do you think me a fool, mister McTavish?"

Haemis blinked, he wasn't sure what to expect but this was something else indeed, he shook his head. "Sir?" he looked confused.

Drake took the opportunity to stand. "The question is very simple, sir. Do you think me a fool?"

This time, the Captain gave the engineer no real opportunity to answer.

"No sir, not in the least. I Donno ye well enough but only by what reputation has been provided. A fool? No sir." he shifted uneasy in the chair watching the Captain stand.

"You expect me to believe that almost every department head on my ship has been replaced in the last twenty-four hours, but it's completely unrelated that you just happened to be transferred directly here from under the watch of my old friend, Captain Timothy Jacobs?"

Silas snorted derisively. "I have no head for politics to begin with, and I am honestly far beyond the point of even caring to try... so I will be absolutely frank with you, Lieutenant. I expect you to do your duty to the absolute best of your ability while on board this ship. You report to me, period, end of discussion. If I discover that you are sewing one molecule of subversion, that you are carrying on secret communications with your former boss there on the Coronado, or that you are otherwise working to do anything that might reduce the capabilities of this ship or her crew as it pertains to our mission..."

Captain Drake fixed McTavish with a steely cold glare, "...I will treat your mutinous actions with every severity that they deserve, and you can expect to spend the duration of your time aboard this vessel in the brig. And that, sir, is the very best you can hope for - I will promise you that. Do I make myself perfectly clear?" he asked.

Haemis opened his mouth, there were a thousand things he wanted to say but he held his tongue as realization settled in that he was being honest and extremely frank with him. Haemis could see the anger as much as hear it in his voice. This was not at all what he expected. "Aye sir, perfectly."

"Very well," Silas spoke, cutting off any further response from the engineer. "As you certainly already know, we leave the Starbase in the next few minutes, and you have a mess on your hands in Engineering. Attend to your duty station at once, Lieutenant. If you have anything else to say to me, we can find a time when things aren't quite so hectic - and when I'm not quite as ready to space Jacobs' agents - to discuss your concerns. Dismissed."

He stopped at the door and hesitated a moment. Not but a few moments before did he want to run out, now he wanted to stay. He turned and only for a moment. "Thank you sir." he passed through the doors quietly back out onto the bridge. His mind ablaze with the comments the Captain hand just made.

Haemis steps out of the ready room and glances around the bridge and slowly crosses around to the Engineering station. He settles into the chair not wanting to interrupt the commander going through the port departure rigmarole and seems lost in thought for a long moment reflecting on his conversation with the Captain. It was short, and to the point. It was good, what he really needed and already a mark on the good side, he actually made even a little time to greet his new officers. He remembered when he first reported aboard the Coronado he barely got a hand wave dismissing him when the first officer introduced him. He was elated to find out the Chief Engineer was far more animated about welcoming him and about showing him the ropes and the "unspoken rules" aboard ship. It was only a few weeks in when he found out the hard way. He shook away the memories and turned to the console and began configuring it for his use so he could optimally monitor things from here when needed.

He froze for a brief moment when he first heard Jacob's voice over the comm system, but he pushed down his urge to let anger get the better of him, he just continued doing what he was doing. He blinked as he noticed they were trying to speed up the draw down from station power. They must be in a hurry.

He turned in his chair and was about to state something but thought better of it, and turned back to the engineering station. He pulled up the warp drive system controls and took note of the current state of things, the system had been at idle for a bit and was slowly coming up which in turn was the balancing act for the station umbilical's and the ships own power system. Everything was looking good, he switched the impulse engines, and system after system to follow. This ship was well maintained. A credit to his predecessor to be certain.

"Lieutenant Tochi," he spoke for the first time. "Ifn' we increase the ships plasma output by ramping up the warp cores generation rate we could be on our way in a jiffy. We would have to have the station follow the power output closely which a computer link could do just fine, they could back it off as we generate more internal power. Ifn yer in a hurry tha is." He pointed to one of his screens. "not exactly regulation... but it could do the trick." He nodded. "in a pinch,"
