Yeah... and how many of that
An animalistic growl rumbled in Bas’ chest and rose into his throat as the blue door swung away to reveal the peculiar room beyond. The growl’s volume increased as the Feral’s lips split into a snarl – his incisors seeming to lengthen and sharpen a bit with the action – and his fingers curled around the grip of the shotgun beneath his coat when he caught sight of the phantom conductor…
“Helloooo-ooo,” Guin called, peeking around him to look into the room as the conductor faded into nothingness, “anybody home?”
…Bas’s snarl diminished a bit as the tiny girl stepped around him and into the room but the growl still rumbled in his throat, low and distrusting, as the dissipation of the phantom left the curiousness of the creature… Cuz she sure as hell don’t smell human… that he assumed was ‘the seer’ in its place.
“Welcome to my velvet room,” the seer intoned from behind her strange mask, gesturing gracefully to the chairs across the table from where she was seated, “Please, take a seat if you wish.”
Bas’ wolfen glare regarded, then ignored the proffered seat, traveled a quick, scrutinizing circuit around the room (both to inspect the strange décor and to verify that there were no immediate threats) and then fixed on the seer, once more as he stalked a few steps more into the chamber. He almost reached out a hand to stop Guin as she rushed past and, apparently, without thinking anything of what the consequences might be, offered a hand to the peculiar creature…
“Hi, I’m Guinevere,” the little spirit chirped in that strangely perky way of hers, “and this is my friend, Sebastian. Our train just blew up.”
…The seer, fortunately, didn’t accept the offered handshake, instead offering something akin to a bow in response, so Bas let Guin go for the moment. He kept his grip on the butt of the shotgun, though, and let a finger rest on the trigger…
"I've been called many names,” the voice behind the mask said, introducing itself with a name as Guin had introduced them, “but right now you can call me Rena.”
“How about the name of your, soul,” Bas’ growled softly, “Seems to me that was the requirement for us to get off the train in this town… Same rules don’t apply to you or what?”
And yes,” the seer continued, addressing the little-spirit’s additional statement, “I know... I could hear the explosion from here, after all.”
“From here,” Bas asked dubiously, not entirely certain that the ghostly image of the conductor from just a moment ago was just coincidence, “or from there? What the hell’s goin’ on in this place… lady?”

I figured I’d better post before that essay catches up and tries to kidnap me.
As the conductor vanished from the room, Guinevere only caught a fading trace of blue in the air that left the sole occupant of the room the veiled and masked seer. Guinevere’s eyes glanced around the room once, quickly, looking for exits and hazards while she practically skipped up to the figure at the desk. With an angelic smile she practically bored holes into the closed eyes of the mask with her gaze as she introduced herself and proffered her hand.
Instead of taking her hand, the seer responded with a sitting bow. “Uh,” Guinevere replied, amending her greeting to a cross between a bow and a curtsey.
“And yes,” the seer continued, addressing the little-spirit’s additional statement, “I know... I could hear the explosion from here, after all.”
“From here,” Bas asked dubiously, not entirely certain that the ghostly image of the conductor from just a moment ago was just coincidence, “or from there? What the hell’s goin’ on in this place… lady?”
Allowing Bas to take charge, Guinevere drifted over to the urn and took a peek inside. Habitually she poked the soil with her finger to test for dampness, and took a deep breath of the rich aroma. The scent took her back to her grandfather’s garden which she had left behind that very morning.
“So,” she interjected, looking up around the room, “I suppose you mean ‘velvet room’ as in a colour, not as in the fabric?”
Guinevere studied the pitcher with a thoughtful frown. “Hey Rena—if that is what you prefer to be called—how do you see with that mask on? Are the eye holes hidden or something?”
After hearing the answer to this question, she again paused as if she were considering the information she was collecting, narrowing her eyes at the dial at the back of the room.
Having strategically thrown her quarry off with her two seemingly innocuous questions, (alright, they were entirely innocuous) Guinevere suddenly asked, “And so why have you brought us here, to this town?” She watched the seer woman’s reaction to her ridiculous conclusion with an expression that would be best completed if she were wearing a double-brimmed Sherlock hat, blowing bubbles out of a pipe to reflect the apparent absurdity of her words.

Soel's Name
“How about the name of your, soul,” Bas’ growled softly, “Seems to me that was the requirement for us to get off the train in this town… Same rules don’t apply to you or what?”
"And yes,” the seer continued, addressing the little-spirit’s additional statement, “I know... I could hear the explosion from here, after all.”
“From here,” Bas asked dubiously, not entirely certain that the ghostly image of the conductor from just a moment ago was just coincidence, “or from there? What the hell’s goin’ on in this place… lady?”
Rena chuckled softly, "How apt... I suppose my soul's name is the name I bore a long time ago... Lachesis..."
She pauses as her apparent gaze follows Guinevere over to the urn of soil. The soil is cool, though getting just a bit dry to the touch.
“So,” she interjected, looking up around the room, “I suppose you mean ‘velvet room’ as in a colour, not as in the fabric?”
Rena nodded in response, "Yes..." She says softly.
Guinevere studied the pitcher with a thoughtful frown. “Hey Rena—if that is what you prefer to be called—how do you see with that mask on? Are the eye holes hidden or something?”
Rena chuckles softly, "There are none." She replies, "My eyes can take in light... but I can't see with it."
Guinevere suddenly asked, “And so why have you brought us here, to this town?”
Rena shook her head at Guinevere, "That wasn't my doing."
Rena turned back to Bas, "It may take some time to fully comprehend... what do you know of time, wanderer? To most, it is a river, flowing surely in one direction. However, if a storm is created... what happens to those on the river?"
Rena paused, before adding, "Where it is safest, is naturally, off of that river. That is where we are. Now, each one of you who have signed the contract has a choice to make. Will you avoid the storm, or will you destroy it?"
She folds her hands together, not pausing to allow a reply, "I don't need to hear your answer... nor do you need to answer now... sometimes it's best to watch the storm from a distance first."
Rena now pauses, her gaze looking back over to where Guin is, by the urn.

Her cat is the picture of unflappability. Her dog, however, trusty sentinel he is, misses his mommy.
“Where it is safest, is naturally, off of that river. That is where we are. Now, each one of you who have signed the contract has a choice to make. Will you avoid the storm, or will you destroy it?”
She folds her hands together, not pausing to allow a reply, “I don't need to hear your answer... nor do you need to answer now... sometimes it's best to watch the storm from a distance first.”
Guinevere fell silent for a moment, gazing into empty space as she considered the implications of Rena’s words. After a moment she suddenly excused herself, citing the need to check on her dog, and left.
Out in the common room Guin checked her watch for the time (it’s digital, if that’s important here). She hoped it wasn’t too late, yet, and went up to the front desk.
“Is there a phone I could use to make a call to the city?” she asked the desk clerk.
She directed the odd girl to the public phone and wished her luck overcoming the phone’s unique ‘problems’.
Guinevere took to the device with a positive spirit and dialled the number. “Good morning to you, too. Is Jillian there? No? Oh, wrong number I guess. Have a nice day.” She hung up the phone and promptly dialled the same number.
This time she didn’t get a chance to speak before the man on the other end started talking. “Sorry mister, I think I—,” she tried to interrupt, but apparently her voice wasn’t what he was expecting and began to shout loud enough for his voice to come out on the other end. “Good evening.” Guin hung up the phone, cutting him off, then tried undeterred once more.
Third time is the charm. “Jillian? Did I wake you? Oh, no, that’s right, the time change. No, I’m in a town called Altin along the way, I’m calling from the hotel. My train has—err, well, it broke down. Hard. They don’t know how long it will be until we can go home, but we’re spending the night here.
“Anyway, do you think you could go over and check on Charlie and Snugglefried? The spare key is under the back window sill. Yeah, I live on the second floor. Well, yeah, there is that one, too, if you don’t have the time for climbing. And Jillian? Do you think you could call my boss at the vet and tell her I’ve been held up? The phone I’m using is a bit temperamental. Yes, I’m sure I’ll be alright, the people here are real friendly. Thanks. Ta-ta.”
Guin hung up the phone again and thanked the clerk one more time. She gathered up her knapsack and settled down in the cushiest-looking chair in the common room.
After a moment of settling in she leaned forward and rested her head on her folded hands, one arm completely obscured in black sleeve and the other bare from being tied up. She looked around the room, beginning to feel the onset of fatigue.
“You wouldn’t happen to know where I can find a doctor, would you? Or maybe a vet? Anything like that would do, really,” she asked the man sitting closest to her. “Got caught in a time-river-storm,” she offered by way of explanation, beaming a bright smile at him.
“How are you doing this evening?”

Elsewhere and Nowhere
Unknown Place
Unknown Time
The guardian stood, poised, in the same position it had been placed in since it was conceived. Its left hand curled protectively around a small, unseen object, held closely to what appeared to be its chest. Its face was opaque and blank, looking more like a helmet than a head, with two long strips of metal connecting in front to form a wide v between where its eyes would be, the upper parts curling around and extending back from the head. The rest of its body, however, was built with a profound attention to detail. Engraved lines and spirals littered the metallic components that made up the guardian's arms, shown faintly by the dim light in the room. Instead of legs, however, its torso simply appeared to sit upon a hexagon shaped podium, with six orbs at its base, each with a hole in it. Where its right hand would be, instead was a single, smooth sphere, held just in front of it, almost as though to beckon someone to touch it.
Around the hexagon shaped room, six medium length spikes of metal were wedged into crevices within each pillar. The only other thing that the faint light revealed as it trickled in from slits in the walls, was a layer of dust that had settled on the guardian, the plain floor, and a couple of humanoid skeletons.

Ms. H.R. SanDiego
Eve's Apartment
11:19 PM
As Eve gets ready for bed, there is a knock on the door. Surprising in itself, considering that room service seldom operate at such times.
"Miss, are you awake?"
It was a man, no doubt... specifically however, the voice belonged to the laptop carrying man.
Should Eve open the door, she'll find him standing about a foot back from it, laptop carried on one arm, typing away with his other hand. It's completely up to Eve whether she does or simply ignores him.
If she does however, the man makes an interesting statement, "It is not my business why, but..." He pauses a moment, his eyes slightly distant, before he nods, "I believe you may be the beneficiary of one of my clients..."
((just putting out ideas as I get them... I'm not actually going to restart this game yet unless everyone wants to))

Knowing who I am can get you killed...
She had barely gotten the needle threaded when a knock at the door caused her head to jerk upwards.
A moment later the voice of Mr. Laptop spoke respectfully through the door, "Miss, are you awake?"
So polite… I know a prison guard or two who could learn a lesson from this guy…
“Yeah… just a second…” the needle found a temporary home in the bedding and she quickly slipped the torn jeans back on before going to the door. She released the lock and opened it with one hand, the other concealing the night club behind her back, this woman would not take any chances no matter how polite the man on the other side of the door sounded.
Through a lock of her Kool-aid red hair she eyed the man so addicted to his laptop that he was typing on it standing in front of her door, “Yes?”
"It is not my business why, but..." He pauses a moment, his eyes slightly distant, before he nods, "I believe you may be the beneficiary of one of my clients..."
Immediately she began to feel her heart race. He knows who I am… her head filled with a line of curses. Seconds ticked by as she stared intently at him, color rising in her cheeks as she tried to get a firm grip on the situation. Finally she shoved the curses to the back of her thoughts and let her eyes dart up and down the hallway, making sure they were alone.
When all seemed clear she stepped out into the hall, moving closer to him as her hand gripped the night stick readying it for a blow if it was needed.
“Who are you? Who are you with? Police? FBI? US Marshalls perhaps? You have to tell me… I’m fully aware of my rights and you and I know that my lawyer screaming ‘entrapment’ isn’t going to make whatever department you are with look good…” she said firmly, controlling her desire to rap the man in the temple with the club until after he answered only by counting her own heartbeats.
((Well I'd enjoy this picking back up... couldn't help but to work up a response to Mr. Laptop. ))

Layers of deceit
The man shook his head, "I'm not with anyone, officially. The only thing I pay attention to is what my my clients assign to me. In some circumstances, it's a personal matter, particularly when it comes to missing people..."
He turned the laptop, holding it out for Eve to see, the text size large enough for her to read it without getting too close, "This is you, isn't it?"
However, the screen has a different story. It is a text document, rather than a website.
Name: Evelyn Meadows
Birthplace: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
No picture available
The date of birth is Eve's own, but the rest of the information is clearly unrelated to her life as Cheryl.
"If this is you," The man said carefully, "Then you are the beneficiary of my client. If it is not you, then I will apologize for taking up your time and the mistaken identity."

Eve?
The man shook his head, "I'm not with anyone, officially.”
Eve stared at him critically and decided that he was telling the truth, but that did not make him completely harmless. So while her grip loosened slightly on the night stick it was still ready to complete a damaging swing if needed.
“The only thing I pay attention to is what my my clients assign to me. In some circumstances, it's a personal matter, particularly when it comes to missing people..."
Ha! Missing people… that’s right I’m missing, and I intend for it to stay that way…
He turned the laptop, holding it out for Eve to see, the text size large enough for her to read it without getting too close, "This is you, isn't it?"
However, the screen has a different story. It is a text document, rather than a website.

The screen did not have on it what she had expected it to. Above anything else she had expected one of the police flyers with her mug shot on it. The sheer simplicity of the text document left her blinking for a moment, when she read over the first few lines she sighed in relief. Except for the birthday the information had nothing to do with her. Eve Handle had no background, and Cheryl West had never been to Canada, had never been to or done any of the things this Evelyn Meadow’s had.
Eve shook her head, the tension melting out of her shoulders as she did. “Not me. Never even been to Canada, and the name’s Eve, just Eve, Handle…”
She took a step backwards toward her room, the hand holding the night stick falling casually to her side as she did.

Red button or blue button?
The man glanced down along the hall both ways a moment, before looking back to Eve.
"Well, if you ever happen across her, could you let her know that she'll need to pick up her citizenship documents as soon as she can?" He said, shrugging, before looking at his laptop again, "I suppose the information I was given may be incorrect as well..."
He paused a moment, before shrugging again, closing the lid of the laptop and setting it at his side, "Oh well. I'm just up in room 418 on the fourth floor. I apologize for the mistaken identity. Good night."
With that, the man turned to leave, and would walk down the hall and up the stairs if not interrupted.
