Tenacity should awaken shortly. It will be my first opportunity to talk one-on-one with Seluumiel, but I'm waiting for her to post first.

Tenacity stopped voicing her plans when she found the note. She read it quickly and quietly before handing it to Chiron.

"How could they think we'd even consider that? They'll die out there. It's all well and good that they think they might find a way home working independently, but what happens if we find one? How would we let them know? There may not even be one, and if there is, what if it doesn't allow for that kind of arrangement to be made? The way here certainly didn't," she said. Her mind filled with concerns and she needed to stop before her breathless speech became completely unintelligible.

In the darkness of the forest, in view of that strange, abyssal night of the fields outside, their group of the only familiar things in this place had just been split in half. The sword sheathed, she moved to her horse and stood there, listening to the familiar rhythm of breath. The smells of saddle-leather and Diligence's blankets filled the air around her as she leaned close and allowed some time to pass.

"If they think it necessary, it might as well be," she said to Chiron, turning back to her bedroll. "I don't see that there's anything we can do about it except try to let them know when--and if--we find a way back, also. This might be where some of the things from the house originated, so a portal home wouldn't be something we could just leave open.

"I don't know. I should sleep before we can actually figure any of that out. Goodnight."

I'm working with the same assumptions Chiron listed.

"Huh? No, we never had trouble..." Tenacity roused and rubbed her eyes. "I didn't hear the bells, what do you mean 'missing'? Where were they sitting before you noticed their absence?"

When Chiron indicated the site, she drew her sword and moved to look closer. There had been too much ordinary activity inside the area of their camp for her to note any unusual footprints.

"We can check their belongings to see if they took anything with them, which might indicate what they were planning. If nothing is missing, then it was almost certainly against their intentions," she said, searching through Camille's things and waving Chiron to Xavier's. "And if that's the case, it must have been powerful and quick, since neither one noticed nor had time to call out."

"I'm not really the type to stealthily pursue the abductor, so my next course of action is going to be to shout their names. If you have a better idea, let me know."

"I only need a couple hours of actual sleep, so I can take the first and third watches," Tenacity said, responding to Chiron's concerns. "If you need unbroken rest, which is something I think I remember hearing once."

She finished putting a fresh edge on her sword and sheathed it. Then she retrieved a spool of thread and a handful of tiny, copper bells from her left belt pouch and began marking a wide perimeter for the camp. "If anything comes too close, these bells will tell us when and about where. Be careful where you step during your watch."

"Thanks very much, Seluumiel. I trust your magical energy will replenish when we sleep? If there's no need to ration it, then I see no reason not to make sure we're all back to full health."

After watching the priest tend to the others, Tenacity tended to Diligence's grazing situation by examining the grass nearby for anything that might be dangerous if swallowed.

"I don't expect those birds will want to test us again anytime soon. We should make camp under the trees so that maybe the canopy will keep use from being so distracted by that sky," Tenacity said. She stared up at the seemingly-impossible flickering, trying to open her mind to the mysteries of the cosmos, but it just wouldn't happen. The strangeness of the backdrop only solidified how alien their surroundings were.

She rolled her shoulders and shook her head before turning back to the party. "We should definitely take care that we communicate our whereabouts to each other and that we don't poke our noses into anything unless we have at least one other person to watch our backs. Right now, there's no telling how far away help--or home--might be or what else might want to eat us."

With that, she sat down near her horse and started to clean her equipment.

Oh, ok. I wasn't aware that particular one was still in melee range.

It's going to get swung at, and I'll still shout the thing I intended to.

Tenacity apparently doesn't believe in ranged combat? I'm not sure how I overlooked it, but she has no missile weapons of any sort.

Anyway, she'll tell the spellcasters to hide behind her for the cover/save benefits and hope to catch as much of the lightning herself. "Get behind me! We'll make it harder for them to target you directly."

She can use Shield Ally only on physical attacks, which she'll do if any of them decide to come into melee range.

what about Seluumiel?

anyway, a fat lot of good mounted combat will do me here, so I plan to get back to the party, hide Diligence by a tree, then go out front to look tasty with my sword and shield.

OK, that's what I was afraid of. You rather conspicuously didn't call it either a sun or a moon.

roll of 12 for a result of 23 on my Ride check, and 3 points damage puts me at 109.

initiative roll of 11 for a result of 16.

"Your reasoning is sound, Chiron. I'll bring up the rear," Tenacity said. She hoped that remaining mounted would lend her enough of a height advantage to see far enough over the grass. "If anyone would like to ride up here with me, the grass isn't so bad. Every set of eyes we have high up will prevent any surprises, too."

Most of her errant duties had taken her through areas that were more heavily traveled than this, and she certainly hadn't encountered foliage that seemed outright hostile.

"What other wildlife do you suppose tolerates this environment? All I see are those birds..." She was just making idle chatter at this point, trying to pass the time and keep everyone's attention on analyzing their surroundings, instead of focusing on how uncomfortable the little details were.

~~~~~
Dismounting from Diligence once the group had reached the edge of the forest, she scanned the canopy for anything that might fall or even jump. "Let's get what rest we can now. I'm not sure when it will ever cool off at this rate. I'll scout a perimeter while you all eat, then I'll take first watch. If those birds are scavengers, we'll make sure they don't think we're an easy target. If they're more aggressive than that, well, only take off what armor you need to get comfortable in case we get interrupted."
No, I'm human too, so plain old boring regular eyes for me. Only two hours of sleep, though!
I double-checked on page 24 where we absconded with the loot to make sure, Chiron, and you might want to change around the mention of the ring that I took, for continuity's sake.
It seemed to her that the others were trying their best not to seem greedy, but as Tenacity had no magical means of healing, such things were not beneath her. "I'll take a handful of the potions, then, if you insist," she said, and put three into her pack. "This ring and the amulet would seem to benefit defense the same amount but in different ways, yes? I don't have similar equipment, either, so it doesn't really matter which one I have and which goes to you." She handed Chiron the amulet and accepted the ring, which she admired briefly on her right hand, opposite the ring of sustenance.
"Xavier and Camille, you should definitely have a potion each, to be sure. If these weapons aren't going to use, we'll have to sell them later to fund things we do want. A staff of this fine craftsmanship should see some demand."
The majority of the items accounted for, she mounted Diligence for a better vantage while the group made its way to the edge of the forest. She sheathed her sword and removed the lance from its straps on the side of the saddle, letting the Valence pennant stream in the breeze above. If anything hostile appeared, Tenacity was ready.
"I agree that venturing up those mountains might not be the best goal. We should trade the advantages of seeing against the disadvantage of being seen and travel along the edge of the forest as far as we can. We certainly won't get lost that way, either," Tenacity said. At this point, she was mostly musing out loud. "Either we find a path through the woods, or we travel at the foot of the mountains and plunge through. I don't like the looks of those clouds."
She was wary about this new area. There was a bridge that had survived until very recently, so there was some manner of civilization in the region, but there was no way of determining how active or benevolent any of that activity might be.
The scent of the air was pleasant enough, so maybe it wouldn't be all bad.
He laid there for a moment just staring at the sky, then asked a question in its general direction. "I don't suppose we know where we are, do we?"
"I thought you would have called your horse again, Chiron." Tenacity said. She glanced at him to make sure that he really was fine and not covering anything serious with bravado.
She scanned the horizon, not recognizing any of the terrain. "We need to find somewhere safe while we get our bearings, and with a volcano erupting nearby, this probably isn't it."
"It will probably take us weeks or even months to get home from here, so we should definitely track down horses for the rest of you. We'll need to take stock so we know our supply situation, too." She looked around at her comrades again and then the surrounding land while fingering the hilt of her sword. They had been flung to a strange land and needed answers, but survival had to be one step at a time. Once the immediate needs were taken care of, they could start to worry about just how they were going to return.
"Tenacity, I owe you a debt of gratitude my friend. Let it be the will of the Seldarine that I have chance to repay it," Seluumiel said.
"We're not out of the fire yet," Tenacity said. She looked out across the bridge and then back toward the lava flows. Weighing the odds of digging a hasty trench against getting everyone across the ravine safely, a third option occurred to her.
"You may have that chance sooner than you thought. Seluumiel, Camille, do you have any magics that might bolster the strength of the bridge or prevent the worst harm that might befall us if the bridge were to fail or burn behind us? I used a safewing emblem once, I don't know what magic powered it, but maybe you have something similar?"
What's the dirt like in the area around this end of the bridge? I'm wondering if it looks like it would be possible to dig a diversionary trench with, say, a shield edge, in order to prevent the thing from getting burned while people are on it.
Also, what do the slats look like, vis-a-vis horse hooves?
My actions may not be in sequence, but I felt we had to keep moving. If order is wrong and someone's plans contradict this, I can fiddle and fine-tune.
Now that I look, Tiamat, how are you rolling? Using a real die or a program?
A 7, 8, 5, 2, and 6 are pretty sad results.
Hearing Seluumiel's admittance that there was nothing she could do about the oncoming lava, which was strange enough in itself, Tenacity sheathed her sword and hoisted the elf onto Diligence's back.
"If you don't know how to ride, just hang on and let her do the work," she said, wondering if Diligence would be able to carry maybe Xavier and Camille or Camille and the chest. No, Xavier must be fleet-of-foot enough, certainly. If Chiron's magic act of summoning his own steed would be fast enough, she had no idea.
"Camille, come here and get on! Chiron, give them the box and I'll set her off." She waited until it was all done before slapping the horse on the rear to start her running downhill and then took off after, making sure neither of the men fell behind, either.
I plan on scooping at least one other person onto Diligence when I mount (or so, I just realized something better that means I get to start running). Tenacity doesn't know that Chiron can only summon Prajna that way once/day right now, but he's the only other one that she is certain can ride a horse.
Looking over my sheet, I don't have any deflection bonus, either. That ring would put me at 24 AC to go with my 112 HP.
I'm lobbying for tankitude, which may not be that important. Don't mind greedy ol' me.
And what about Tenacity's and Camille's initiatives?
I grabbed the necklace because Tenacity doesn't have anything in that slot currently. I guess we don't have to worry about identifying magic properties for these items?
"Now this place really doesn't make sense," Tenacity said to Chiron as she lifted from the chest the first thing her eyes fell on, a glittering amulet. "I saw him flicker, but couldn't work out why not just destroy this portal if he and his order wanted to prevent evil's passage through it. Do you suppose we can stop whatever's on the other side and make it safe to come back?"
She dashed through the door to grab Diligence's reins and urge her toward the portal. If the house was really collapsing, there was no way she would leave her companion behind.
"I would prefer a certain amount of foreknowledge, but it seems we have no choice. Take the gifts he bestowed and follow me shortly. If there is anything hostile, its attention will be on me first," she said. With a last look at everyone's eyes to make sure they understood, she stepped through the portal sword-first, her horse's reins in her shield hand.
"Just this one, you say?" Tenacity said as she stepped forward. "Do you know anything of what lies beyond the other doors in this trap? Why this portal, and what else do you want to tell us about it?"
She had been about to open the same door as Seluumiel, but with far less preparation. The ominous foreboding shrouding every aspect of this place felt even stranger in light of this discovery. With a shake of her head, she returned her gaze to the old elf.
Tenacity stepped out of the house once more after Diligence was safely inside. Sword at the ready, she was more than a little curious about the ruckus Xavier was raising.
"I think if there are specters and other such unknowns out here, it would be safest inside the house. So far, the number of walls and doors seems finite. Security in certainty. Let's all get inside and get to the bottom of this." She decided not to mention that the door hadn't even been latched, as no one was going to get anywhere if the paranoia ran rampant.
She gestured for everyone to follow her and returned to her horse's side.
"I do believe that if anything had happened in our absence, the evidence would be clear."
Tenacity dismounted and walked Diligence to the front door of the house. Whatever Chiron was doing, with his taunting the shadows, she felt it was time to get everyone and everything inside. No matter what might be inside or out, the whole group would need to stay together now.
If that meant walking two giant horses through what now looked like an incredibly small doorway, so be it.
She drew her sword and shield and, with the reins trailing behind her, walked to the door and knocked.
