Topic: Auguries of Destruction - The Linsemptus
Subject: Attack again

The scouts were definitely more like ghosts than men.

Dusk's reinforced strike missed hitting his foe as the ghost moved to the side of the stab, retaliating with a small punch. Dusk knew that eventually it may work up the energy to cut more than just skin again and what he had felt before was unpleasant to say the least.

Grunts and gasps from the rest of the battle were broken by the wet sound of a blade piercing a body. Dusk didn't turn from his opponent but still caught the sight of someone sliding of the end of the largest Linsemptus' sword. At least it seemed to have been a quick death. That was all Dusk hoped for once his time had finished.

But not before then.

Dusk pushed forward against the scout attacking with both weapons in an attempt to finish what they had started.

((Full attack, +11/+11/+6))

Subject: Continuing the dance

Taking a punch to the gut never feels good, but this one seemed to have no more strength behind it than would come from any ordinary man. Dusk stepped back with the blow and danced back towards his enemy, stabbing it straight through the jaw. But his blade encountered nothing despite what his eyes told him.

The chaotic shifting skull seemed to grin.

The scout sidestepped the reverse strike as Dusk brought both blades around and Dusk crouched low, moving swiftly to the side to strike again. This time, however, Dusk put a little more behind the stab with the pale ninjato, his focus shifting to the tip of his sword. As easily as the blade cut through the air, Dusk also forced it through the very fabric of reality, letting the blow land in a duality between the ethereal and the material.

((Ghost Strike (move), Attack vs. Linsemptus Scout (+13, 1d6+2 + 2d6, Ghost Touch)

Probably won't have time to update on the next round so next rounds actions are: Ghost Step, Spot/Listen, Move silently around behind the closest Scout and either pop back and attack or attack from ethereal plane depending on what I see))

Not having a buttload of time atm. So to keep this moving my actions are as stated in previous IC post:

Spot+Listen to check where the other enemies are (free).
If anymore attack Dusk (other than the current one), Ki Dodge (swift).
Full Attack vs. Linsemptus Scout (+11/+6, +11; 1d6+2 + 2d6, 1d6+1).

"Akihiko!" said Mitsuru.

Dusk tensed at the sound. His eyes caught sight of the skull nearly at the same time the humans' had and his hands moved swiftly to the hilts of the short swords tucked neatly behind his waist and over his shoulder. The smooth draw of both blades was reassuring despite the slight nervous feeling that lumped in Dusk's gut.

It was a familiar feeling, a sense of trepidation and fear that Dusk coveted. He may be long-lived, especially compared to humans and most other races, but he was not immortal. The fear of death kept his mind in check.

It also happened to provide a handy dose of adrenaline when danger neared.

"I see five enemies, keep your guard up!" Mitsuru called from across the fire. Dusk picked out the outlines of the skulls, noting their positions relative to him.

The others were starting to wake from their sleep, their own senses struggling to take over from the fog that layered on their minds in sleep. One sight of the Linsempti would be enough to jolt most people out of a dead sleep, let alone the fact that a group of them were attacking your camp.

In Dusk's one hand is a blade of dark adamantine that reflects some of the firelight. The black metal seems otherwordly in the darkness but not nearly so much as the Linsempti. The other blade was white, almost akin to ivory but still steel. Dusk whispered a short phrase in elven that loosely translated to "To begin in Light" as he drew the blade. As he finished the last word, a silvery light seemed to illuminate the blade and the runes etched into the blade and handle, exuding positive energy.

Dusk would have questions for the Scout when she returned, and Mitsuru, both of whom seemed to know more about their foes than him, at very least.

The two other humans on guard engaged with the first enemy warrior that charged them. Dusk found another of the enemy appear in front of him, floating up from beneath the earth and raising a limb that formed into a serrated blade that slashed at him.

Though he saw it coming, Dusk nearly got caught beneath the end of the blade. As it was, the tip cut a fine line into his forearm as the elf turned his body from the slash. A bright white line appeared behind the attack, similar to the cracks in the world that spiraled out from above Venerro. Something, whether a will or an energy Dusk could not tell which, flowed from that white space between spaces and threatened to lock his arm and body in place.

His teeth gritted against one another as Dusk forced his arm to move and his torso to twist, slicing his own blade, this one imbued with positive energy, towards his attacker.

((Combat Actions so you can roll it up while I describe it:
Activate (free): Sacred Weapon
Attack (Standard): Single attack with Sacred Ninjato vs. Linsemptus Scout

In the next/first-full round, if Dusk can detect more than one Linsemptus attacking him (Spot/Listen with Q.R. feat, I guess), he will use a Ki Dodge and continue to attack the Linsemptus Scout if possible.))

Possibly when on watch. I have to read Hammer and the Xira post still.

EDIT: Depending on the update, I might have Dusk try to speak with Xira near the end of the watch shift.

And Dusk is going to change from his traveler's outfit to his Monk's robes (which are black and match the bodysuit, i.e. like a ninja). Minus the sandals cause he has boots and he still wears the cloak.

Can Armand and Deunan take the 2nd hour as well so I I can take the extra hour just for healing? As I understand I can take double the rest and regenerate most of my points, right?

"Very well," he conceded. "I will remain on watch after I take my rest. One more, then, should start at watch. Alert me at the first change."

With that, Dusk removed himself from the group, returning to his bedroll. Laying on his back with his hood up and arms crossed, he closed his eyes and entered the short trance he had grown used to over the decades.

((I assume we're doing 4 2-hour shifts?))

Rofl. I like our math better.

So, how do you interpret Su abilities? Still not 100% clear on that one. Are they mind tricks that use latent universal energy (or something like that)?

Does 'casting a spell' mean that the caster is concentrating, possibly changing and then releasing the magic? Or are they simply a conduit and can change it as it flows?

I don't even cast spells, so I'm just curious about how you think of it.

Oh I don't think I would be doing this every day. It just presented an interesting conundrum.

I used a factor because I assumed that to "manually recharge" it would become more difficult each to you do it, e.g. I rested twice today, the third time would be 3 times as hard as the first, though you might consider it to be a squared factor.

It would be an interesting intellectual pursuit, nonetheless, given that you can set the boundaries to whatever you want and fiddle with it and such.

Lets stick with 3 hours for an additional rest time but I propose it can't be taken within 4 hours of high noon (i.e. nothing substantial can be siphoned from the universe between 10 AM and 2 PM). Furthermore, I propose that if I do find it necessary to take additional rest time, anytime I choose to use more than half of my "charges" for daily use abilities you apply a % fail chance.

I think that would make it fair. I assumed that using an (Su, Sp) ability would be draining, just as if you or I sprinted 100 meters in reality. After so many times, we wouldn't be able to run 100 meters full on sprint.

lul, I don't mean to argue but I do like to be precise.

So, technically:

Where n is the hours of rest required for "complete bedrest", a manual recharge of (su, sp) abilities requires a*(n^2)*1/(cos(h*pi/24)) hours of rest where h is the time on a 24-hour clock in hours and a is the (amount of rest periods + 1) that you have taken in that 24-hour cycle. At least that is how much you would need if you gained energy at a constant rate equal to that of which you start resting at, which wouldn't be true. But in order to account for that I think we'd have to find the integral of that expression wrt h but that gets terribly complicated.

EX: Say Dusk rests from Midnight to 1 AM and then over the next 5 hours decides to recharge his daily use abilities.

a = 2, Dusk has rested once already
n = 1, Dusk needs 1 hour of rest normally
h = 6, it is 6 AM.

2*(1^2)*min(1/(cos(pi/4)),4) = 2*1*(2^(1/2)) = 2^(3/2) hours rest needed.

Obviously it doesn't really make sense to rest for an irrational amount of time, so it would just round to the next 1/2 hour. Since 2^(3/2) is approx. 2.83 he would need 3 hours of rest.

This would also imply that it would take an infinite amount of time to recharge at 12 noon. We could assume that it levels off 4 times a*n^2.

Subject: Well

Here's what makes sense to me:

Daily use magic items: Refresh 24 hours from use. They need to "recharge" by drawing magic from anywhere and they do so over a day.

Daily use class abilities: These refresh from energy in the body. That means the body has to get that energy from somewhere. I.e. we have to eat, drink and then rest. My interpretation would be, specifically for Dusk: The Ring of Sustenance provides enough "food, water and rest" to heal and refresh me for each day. If I want to heal or refresh more, I would need to eat and drink more and then rest.

I would still think that Daily use class abilities could be refreshed within 24 hours, but I would need to eat and drink a meal or two before resting.

Coo. Thanks.

EDIT: And by 'Daily Use Abilities', I mean class abilities like wild shape or my ghost step. I would take Magical Items that are usable N/day to refresh on 24 hours.

Never thought about it that way. I was thinking more, if I take more than 1 full rest state, do I gain the benefits of having rested again (I.e. healing, spells, daily use abilities, etc.).
