Topic: Murder in Baldur's Gate
Subject: Kairos on the Front Line

The bloodied half-orc gritted his teeth, the fear in him only being channeled into anger for battle. A viking never ran from battle, used to either raiding in unfamiliar lands or stuck on a very narrow sea vessel. Retreat was never an option, so the thought of running away was unheard of to Kairos.

This immediate threat was much more of a threat to our to-be paladin, and he switched out his handaxe for his greatsword, staring at this figure the entire time.

Not wanting to test his might against the beast, Kairos took a defensive position, favoring the idea that maybe an ally could hit the thing before it could hit its immediate foe.

He made one step backward, gripping the hilt till his knuckles went white.

What was this creature? Was it a demon sent from the depths? Kairos focused, concentrating in the same way he was taught during his youth with the Blackfoots, all those years ago when he believed that Gruumsh was real. He didn't know why, but he hadn't seen anything as outlandish since those days....

Round 1:

  • Five-foot step.

  • Dodge/whatever the "full-defense" or "fighting defensively" action equivalent is in 5e. ((I'm in the airport right now and can't exactly access the Player's Handbook.))

Round 2:

  • Kairos uses Divine Sense to figure out what the monster is. ((This would only say if the monster is some type of aligned outsider if I remember correctly.))

Subject: Long-Lost Half-Siblings

Okay, even though Kairos isn't a barbarian, I'm thinking it would make sense that the heat of battle + Runa's hood conveniently keep Kairos from noticing that his grown-up half-sister is there among them until combat is over or something. Is that okay, Mr. DM? Don't need no rage ability to say something like that and have it make sense?

Thanks, Jozan, that helped. I posted, but I'm not sure if it's okay or not. I'm actually pretty certain that was my first in-character post I've ever made on Red Dragon Inn.

Topic: Murder in Baldur's Gate
Subject: Kairos

Summary - The half-orc had been travelling to Baldur's Gate in hopes of finding a ship and some supplies to prepare for a sea trip back up north. Upon being led around to the Archduke being assaulted, he has a moral dilemma from the culture shock that most people in this community aren't able to defend themselves properly. In his viking homelands, everyone knew how to fight, and was completely responsible for his or her own safety. After a moment of uncertainty, Kairos draws his weapon and joins the fight against these hooded attackers.

Third-Person Limited

Among the few that stayed was an orcish figure. With yellow eyes, the dark-green colored half-orc was adorned in chainmail spotted with signs of rust. Across his torso from his right shoulder to his left hip was a silk rope, and from the left shoulder to the right hip was a strap to hold a sheath on his back. One hand was at his side, fixated and flexed, as his other hand, the left hand, had all five digits wrapped around the hilt of the greatsword carried on his back. While his stance was stern and confident, perhaps even vigilant, a keen-eyed observer that would rather watch an orc than the archduke get murdered could tell that there was something in his eyes. Inside those irises of yellow determination were pupils of doubt.
Uncertainty.
Hesitation.

Then he randomly drew a handaxe instead and charged into the frey.

Third-Person Narrative

Kairos had vague knowledge of a port city to the south of where the Greysharks had had him contained, so he set off to Baldur's Gate, hoping to find some food, a place to spend one night, someone that can tell him what this odd trinket he found is, a boat, and supplies for a long journey by said boat. His goal was to go back to the Blackfoots and fight with them once again. The fact that the locals seemed to refer to the victory battle celebration (or at least that's what he assumed it was) as "Returning Day" touched the Half-Orc, and it only made him want to return home even more.

As soon as he saw these hooded warriors assault the armored man, Kairos assumed it was vengeance. He could see why such an important figure could cause hardship for another, but, this definitely wasn't the way to do it. Did this archduke wrong all of these hooded ones in one fell swoop? Well, he had seen the chiefs of Blackfoot be in worse situations. This archduke should have been prepared.

But...all these people, why were they running away? As Kairos looked to the left and to his right, he saw the fear in all of them, as if combat were an alien thing to all of them, or that these hooded people were out to avenge against everyone in the whole city...

Kairos decided to draw his weapon. He reached for the sword and grabbed the hilt, but froze as he saw the people be afraid of him as well as they ran. The said fears in their eyes now included a hulking orc-man drawing a sword taller than their children. Did they not know how to fight? In his homelands, everyone knew at least how to rip another's arm off. Sure, the two-handed version of the arm rip was more common than the more practical method involving one hand, but at least they weren't clueless.

Cluelessness seemed to be more common in Baldur's Gate.

Kairos gripped his sword tighter. How would justice by vengeance work if no one knew how to fight? He reasoned it couldn't, but, then, why were these hooded fighters attacking this unarmed warrior, and a human no less? Kairos knew he had to do something, but, even if barely anyone in Baldur's Gate knew how to fight, should he risk denying someone his or her revenge? On a human? Unarmed? That the people seemed to love?

The half-orc couldn't hesitate anymore. He drew the greatsword-no, not yet. He drew his handaxe, and ran towards the attackers.

ROUNDS

Round 1

  • I voluntarily take disadvantage on initiative for this round due to Kairos's initial hesitation.

  • Action and Move -I have two ideas in mind, but one of them might not be acceptable depending on Jozan1's DMing style.

    1. Kairos searches the battlefield and then advances into the battlefield.
      • Search action. Kairos makes a Wisdom (perception) check (+3) or a Wisdom (insight) check (+3) to note the number of threats in the area and to distinguish between hooded figures and any friendlies, as well as note any enemy that is trying to remain hidden. If I have to choose only one of those to do with this check, I choose to distinguish between attackers and defenders of the duke. (If I accidentally detect a sneaking Morthos/Creed, I would very much like to make a Wisdom (insight) check (+3) for Kairos to determine if Morthos is another attacker or an ally of some sort, since I'm guessing Morthos is probably dressed in a similar fashion with our attackers.)

      • Move up to 30 feet, aiming to get as close to the duke as possible without provoking opportunity attacks. It's not specifically stated as function of Strength (athletics) checks (+6), but if Kairos may make one to bull rush people that don't seem to be trying to hurt one another out of his way towards the duke, then I would like to do that.

    2. Kairos charges through the battlefield towards the duke to provide immediate backup.
      • Move up to 30 feet until he reaches an enemy attacking the Duke or an enemy in his way.

      • Make a melee attack with his handaxe (+6 attack, 1d6+4 slashing damage, 30ft. short range and 120ft. long range), or throw it at an enemy attacking the duke or between Kairos and the duke if his move results in him being on his way towards the duke but not quite there yet.

Round 2
  • I end taking a voluntary disadvantage on initiative.

  • If Kairos is unarmed and more than 30ft. away from the duke, then he draws his greatsword (+6 attack bonus, 2d6+4 slashing damage). If he can draw his greatsword as part of a melee attack against an enemy, then he does so.

  • If Kairos is unarmed and less than 30ft. away from the duke, then he attempts to move to the duke in such a path that he doesn't provoke opportunity attacks in order to grapple (PHB page 195) a foe that is attacking the duke.

  • If Kairos is armed, then it's basically the same as the other two options except he attacks with his handaxe instead of his greatsword or grappling.

Topic: Murder in Baldur's Gate: Q&A
Subject: Culture Question

I'm heavily basing Kairos with the viking culture.

In this situation, it would be easy for Kairos to assume that these hooded figures are people that seek revenge on Abdel, and revenge was basically the source of how the justice system worked in viking cultures. The way a viking wrought on revenge involved a lot of waiting, so it would make further sense that Kairos wouldn't question why they seek this revenge.

However, I was going to have a little battle in his head involving his viking culture and the paladin virtues awakening within him. Is this okay for me to do, or is it too far-fetched for me to do such a thing in your campaign right now?/would it be better for your story if Kairos just decided to go and act immediately?

Topic: Would like some ideas for a planar campaign
Subject: Thank you all!

Well, I solved my initial problem the other day when the players somehow agreed that they all wanted to run a donut shop together in Sigil because they call it "the donut city".

Due to the health movement going around in Sigil, donut sales have been down, and the party has been having a hard time paying rent to their landlord, the Lady of Pain. In order to not get their asses kicked by the scariest woman in the multiverse, they search the planes for a donut recipe that is both healthy and delicious that can be applied as the base dough for all types of donuts. The first stop is to the Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus to the Fortress of Knowledge.

Of course it gets much more serious from then on out.....

Thank you for all your ideas though, and keep em coming!

Hey all, I'm starting a campaign a week from Wednesday, and the plans I had for it got invalidated, so now I need to start over.

It's going to be a planar campaign, and I'd like some help with ideas for quests and stuff.

It's most likely going to start in Sigil, if anyone is going to suggest an idea for how it starts.

I just want some ideas for quests and things; i've got a terrible writer's block and would like some assistance. Anything helps.

Topic: Requesting Opinion on House Rules involving Psionics
Subject: Opinions on these House Rules?

I have always never liked the idea of Psionics and Magic being exactly the same, but at the same time, I am TERRIFIED of what happens when they're completely different and are invincible/susceptible to each other. In an attempt to find a happy medium, I came up with the idea of "Magic-Psionic Translucency," as opposed to "Magic-Psionic Transparency."

Note: While it's 3.5e, I use advantage/disadvantage from 5e because it's easy and it's hard sometimes to think of a certain number that a penalty should be. Or if the DC should just be higher instead. Or something else.

Magic/Psionic Translucency rules:

1.) Magic/Psionic abilities have advantage on overcoming opposite type of resistance. For example, a wizard's spells have advantage on overcoming power resistance. Energy resistance works normally, regardless if the source of the resistance is magic or psionic. Energy is energy is energy.

2.) Detect abilities require a concentration or autohypnosis check to detect auras and such of the opposite kind.
The DC for the check is equal to what the Psicraft or Spellcraft check would have been to identify it mundanely in the first place.

3.) SpellCraft/Psicraft checks are still separate. They are completely different skills, but they do provide synergy bonuses to each other.

4.) Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device are also not the same skill. They provide synergy bonuses to each other. If a class skill list contains Use Magic Device and doesn't contain Spellcraft and Psicraft (such as the rogue's skill list), then Use Magic Device may be replaced with Use Psionic Device with the DM's approval (for example, a rogue would be able to be trained in Use Psionic Device and not be trained in Use Magic Device if she so desired).

5.) In an Antimagic field, Psionic users must succeed on a DC 10 autohypnosis or concentration check. In an anti-Psionic field, magic users must also succeed on an autohypnosis or concentration check with the same DC. For every round the manifester or spellcaster is within the antimagic or antipsionic field, the DC for the check increases by 1. (For example, in the fifth round within the field, the DC would be 15.)

I had also thought of a variant rule on the psionic focus feature that would help balance the psionic classes with themselves and with the rest of the classes (or at least attempt to solve the problems for the players complaining about how psionics are overpowered.)

Psionic Focus

1.) Psionic focus is not just for taking 15 on concentration checks and feats. It is required to manifest any power or use any psi-like ability in general. However, manifesting a power does not expend your Psionic focus unless if you use as many power points as you possibly can in one manifestation. A psi-like ability never expends one's Psionic focus if it is at will. If it has a limited number of uses and you manifested its last use for the time interval, you expend your Psionic focus.

2.) There are drawbacks to being Psionically focused, depending on what your key ability score for manifestation is.

•INT: Being Psionically focused to your intelligence tunes the world out as your mind opens up to a higher state of being. While you can function just fine, you are considered to be too distracted and/or stressed to be able to take 10 on skill checks or ability checks.

•WIS: Being Psionically focused to your wisdom actually makes you more aware of the world around you and more connected to it, thus suffering no penalty from being Psionically focused.

•CHA: Being psionically focused to your charisma makes you more audacious, daring, courageous, and maybe a tad too hasty. Due to a newfound tendency to focus more on yourself than others, you are unable to take 10 on diplomacy, craft, and knowledge checks. While this Psionic focus doesn't make you less functional, you must succeed on a DC 10 will save whenever you fail a skill check or an attack roll or a Manifester level check or lose your Psionic focus. For every time you make that save in an encounter, the DC increases by 1. For every time you've failed that save in the current day, the DC increases by 1. This saving throw must also be made whenever a fellow party member/companion you care about drops to 0 or fewer hit points.

3.) Only one section of the brain can be Psionically focused at one time. If you have more than one manifesting class and, as a result, have more than one key ability, then you can only be Psionically focused to one key ability at a time. A wilder/Psion, for example, could only focus on either her charisma or her intelligence, and would only be able to manifest powers learned from the class who's key ability she is currently focused on.

4.) If one prefers that the soulknife should be able to be psionically focused, the soulknife's key ability for psionic focus purposes is Wisdom. The soulknife need not be psionically focused to summon its mind blades, but losing it would cause any present mind blades to vanish. A soulknife needs to be psionically focused in order for her mind blade(s) to have enhancement bonuses and special qualities.

This rule makes the psychic warrior (and the ardent and divine mind for those with splatbooks) more advantageous to be when selecting a psionic character class where they otherwise wouldn't be.

Now these aren't done yet. I just want to post them to see what other people think of what I have going so far, as well as suggestions, etc. I'd post this on like min/max boards or something, but they don't want people to post homebrew on there unless if it's 100% done and playtested which doesn't make sense to me. Like, how do you get feedback from other people so you can make it better? Whatever XD.

Subject: Inn-provements (zing!)

I am all for these ideas (assuming the chat will be replaced, not just removed >.>), but in the RPG sites I've seen, most of the webcam-like stuff and related has always been done through an independent program, such as MapTool (I'm not sure if that one has a webcam function but I'm pretty sure it can do text chat and mic shenanigans).

I can link you to many an RPG forum site that has it all "down" so to speak.

A problem I've had on here is that I can't edit the name of a thread after it's posted. Like, I forgot to make a short name for one I recently just started, and now it's stuck up there on the updated topics section as "Requesting Opinions on Hou". It irks me XD

Also, TheTangledWeb.com is a website that allows people to advertise games like we do here in the recruiting forums, but it's perfectly acceptable for a site member to go and pretty much just advertise a forum site like this. Do you think we should do that?

and the struggle is real.

When I go to "save as," It gives me two options: 1, I save it as a PDF, or I save it as a Word or Excel document (which I can't do since I don't have Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).

When it saves as a PDF, it just makes a blank copy of the form.

That's the thing- it says it's a Form. Like for taxes. Because of that, it won't let me save an editable version of it. I can give you a noneditable version of the form, but this means that EVERY time I level up, EVERY time my equipment changes, EVERY time I gain XP, and ANY CHANGE WHATSOEVER, EVEN IF IT'S JUST A PART I LEFT BLANK FOR LATER, I CAN'T EDIT IT AND HAVE TO FILL IT ALL OUT ALL OVER AGAIN.

*coughs* Sorry. I've been having a lot of angst with this.

So then I try right-clicking outside in the file folders. Nothing. Just "rename". But that just renames the file.

Then I try "ctrl+s" (the windows shortcut for saving) and it does squat.

Cannot save as an editable file. Sorry.

I actually try to make the story not as much of a story as it is lore with opportunities for the players to go do stuff.

And I actually don't know much about Pathfinder (not nearly as much as I do for 3.5e btw), just the main differences for skill points and combat and the goals for when Paizo redid the classes and stuff. There's still a lot there I don't know so don't pin me as an expert on that okay????

Now I'm thinking about starting up that Relistan campaign again. Try to see if we can rework it (btw the empty level system I had going is not as good as I hoped, and in all honesty it's better to just be more fluid with the mechanics than the books are with what gets what and stuff).

I apologize for how horridly quiet my sudden leave was. I just didn't think it was possible to play any 3.5e games here without anything to use as a gameboard, and my local community started to be active again, so I found little need to be prowling around online. I'm really sorry about how I left. It was rude and I should have said something.

But I'm back! And I found my answer to my game board/map/whatever problem: Maptool. I'll have to write something about it once I'm more familiar with the program.
