RedWrym School of Online Adventuring

Professor O'Leary
Director's Office
Week 1 - Monday early afternoon

Professor O’Leary’s office sat on the end of a southern facing hall. In the center of the room a massive mahogany desk spoke of her position, and perhaps her ego as well. It was bathed in the colored light that filtered down through the stained glass window behind it. The image worked into the lead and glass was that of an angel spreading her wings over a battle.

She sits not behind the desk but in front of it where several high backed chairs are pulled around a small coffee table. A silver service carries fragrant hot tea in it, four cups have been poured, but the one that Professor O’Leary brings to her lips has a scent of something harder than just tea brewing in it.

“Welcome to Redwyrm. Two new students in one day, such a treat. This way I won’t have to repeat this speech more than once. We are not your babysitters here, we are your teachers, and we intend on teaching you how to be great adventurers. After graduation you should be prepared to slay dragons and gather rewards for your efforts. Whether you use these skills for good or evil, or what rewards you demand for your efforts will be up to you, we teach the skills, not the morals. It is important that you listen to the professors, not everything here is fun and games, some of it may be life threatening if you do not listen to instructions.

That being said we do hope you enjoy your time with us.” She smiles and takes a sip of her tea.

“You call come very varied backgrounds, as do all of our students, you will get along or else. I will not tolerate intolerance.” The turn of words ends with a flash of her pearly whites.

“I shall say nothing further on that. Now to the fun...” Her big bright blue eyes flashed at them.

“As you might know every year we have a tournament against the Griffonwood School of Combat Training. Brutes the lot of them, we like to think of ourselves as something more rounded and cultured than they.” She says rather smugly. “We fully intend on kicking their firm little tooshes if you catch my drift.” A grin and another sip of her tea.

“Professor Tann’Talas is in charge of our team. You will have a class with him everyday where he will work on training you. Right now training is our main focus, but there will be other classes you will be involved in of course…” she waves her hands rather flippantly.

“First though we should get you settled in. The East hall is the dormitories. We have rooms assigned to you…” she paused then and turned toward the door. Next to it the new students would have noticed the full suit of armor, built to fit the lovely female figure that sat before them, standing as if on guard. The noise beyond the door is what seemed to gather her attention though. Voices and the click clacking of shoes to a precise rhythm.

“Kired come in here please!” She called out. The footsteps paused, then rounded toward the door. It opened and a young half elf dipped his head into the room.

“Professor! You called?” He chirped.

“Yes… is that Shadowborne behind you there?”

“Yes sir! We were headed to the cafeteria, looking forward to the gruel they serve us.” Ion grinned.

“Kired… I’m losing my patience with you and your complaints about the food. Now if you and Shadowbane would show these new students to their rooms, and to the cafeteria as well I would greatly appreciate it.”

We have Amaker,” she gestured toward the halfling and then gestured toward the elf that seemed to tower over his fellow new students, “Draka.”

Sizing them up.

Steelight Shadowborne
In his few years here, Steelight has learned much about how to survive as a free man. He has learned that every conversation and every confrontation is not a battle for survival, but a test. Some tests are physical in nature, others determine your worth in other less obvious ways. Tann'Talas has become his favorite teacher and has helped him progress in his combat skills. Teaching him to focus his rage and use it as a weapon, instead of letting it consume him. He has learned to use his mind as well as his body to fight his battles, and is thankful for it.

Nowadays, he trains whenever he has a spare hour. He tests himself constantly and... he tends to be a bit arrogant. He tends to look down on those who require tools such as weapons or armor to fight, though Professor O'Leary and a few others have undoubtedly earned his highest respect.

This morning, like any other, Steelight awoke before the dawn. It was a calming time for him, a time before the masters of his past had awoken, the only brief moments of freedom he had before his escape. He had been on the roof of the school practicing for hours when he received instructions to head down to the the Director's office. Apparently there were some new students. After looking down at his sweat covered clothing he decided it simply would not do to show up like this. He respected Professor O'Leary too much.

After a quick stop in his room to wash and change his clothes he headed out to the Director's office. Meeting Ion along the way.

Outside of the Director's Office Week 1 - Monday early afternoon
The young man in the doorway gazes at the two newcomers appraisingly. His long black hair falls down around his shoulders, framing his face in darkness. His clothing is much as you would expect of a student here. He wears a slightly loose fitting cotton shirt and breeches, with black leather bracers on his wrists stamped with the symbol of a flame. After a moment he shakes his head and mutters something to the pointy-eared one beside him.

It's long but fun

Ion Kired
In front of school
Week 1-Monday-Morning

Crap I think I’m lost again. Ion looked at the landscape around him. It was very nearly the first day of his third year at the Redwyrm School of Adventure and he was supposed to be there. In fact it should have been right there in front of him. But it wasn’t. Instead he was looking at a forest. A very pretty forest to be sure but a forest nonetheless. Amazing. This time I even astound myself. Been going here for three years and I still can’t find the stupid place. He pulled out a piece of paper and started following his footsteps back when he heard a yell about fifty paces away. The yell brought a grin to his face. Hehe initiation. So I wasn’t lost after all. Nice to know somethings never change, though I pray to the Bard that the cafeteria food’s gotten better. Smiling as he remembered his ode to fortitude builders as he had creatively dubbed the cafeteria food. Ion silently crept up through the illusory foliage trying to stay out of sight (and hopefully this time with a dry face) as he peered in on the new students. The Facelick was a classic initiation process into the Redwyrm. It was also Ion had learned later his first year the last part of being accepted into the school. If anyone left after being face licked it wasn’t considered as Eol driving them away but more as they weren’t ready for the other insanity. Still it was a joy to watch the expressions of unsuspecting students as they met the gnome and then found out he was one of the teachers they’d waited so long to meet. As the ceremony came to an end and Professor O’Leary was about to resummon the school Ion skipped a little ways away and pretended to look ponderous just in case he was spotted. He kept half an ear trained on the orientation and the other half trained on listening for professor Falfalas’ footsteps. This year I’m going to get him before he gets me. Ion vowed as he had vowed last year. He hadn’t succeeded last year but this year…this year would be different. It was looking out for Eol that had Ion looking in the right direction to see his friend and fellow classmate Shadowborne walking up the path ready to start a new year.

“Shadowborne hey.” Ion called out running to catch up to his friend. “Going for some breakfast? I’ll tag. Sooo, how was your summer? Mine was excellent. I joined up with an adventuring party. I know we’re not supposed to join up with professionals yet, I mean only just barely being Juniors and everything, but I did the math and we measure out to be better than that other school turns out as seniors. So anyways I joined up with this party…” Ion prattled on subconsciously tapping as he walked.

“Kired come in here please!” Professor O’leary’s voice called from her office. Ion spun around falaped to her door and gingerly opened it.

“Professor! You called?” He said noting the three freshly licked faces.

“Yes… is that Shadowborne behind you there?”

“Yes sir! We were headed to the cafeteria, looking forward to the gruel they serve us.” Ion grinned. Mmm gruel works better for food fighting than eating. But I guess it is better than nothing as Eol always says he had to eat at my age, then follows it up with that crazy story about walking through snow uphill both ways.
“Kired… I’m losing my patience with you and your complaints about the food. Now if you and Shadowbane would show these new students to their rooms, and to the cafeteria as well I would greatly appreciate it.”

“Sure no problem.” Ion says, You wouldn’t have to hear me complain about it if you’d fix it. Ion thinks the thought but wouldn’t dare say it in front of new students.

“We have Cuoghi” she gestures to the dwarf seated with her, “Amaker,” she gestured toward the halfling and then gestured toward the elf that seemed to tower over his fellow new students, “Draka.”

“Welcome to the Redwyrm.” Ion nods to each as their introduced. He grins as Shadowborne whispers his opinion of the new students. We all looked like that when we first came. A little wet behind the ears. “If you’ll follow me I’ll give you the grand tour and then show you a couple a shortcuts so you won’t always be late for class. You never wanna be late for Professor Tann’Talas’ class trust me.” He turns fully expecting the newbies to follow him and clacks his way down the hall.

The Tour

Steelight Shadowborne Outside of the Director's Office Week 1 - Monday early afternoon
Steelight's customary smirk comes to his face as he turns to follow Ion down the hall. After a moment a voice carries from the direction they left in.

"So are you just going to stand there enamored with our Director or go on the tour?

Another?

Professor O'Leary
Director's office
Week 1 - Monday early afternoon

"Enamored with me?" Professor O'Leary smiled and tossed her red curls behind her ear. "Shadowborne... I think you are getting this meeting confused with the memory of our first meeting.

However, yes you students should move on with the tour, I have things to do."

She starts to usher them out when suddenly behind the desk a small halfling scurries out.

"Wait! Not without me! Don't go without me!" He exclaims while he gets up off his knees and grins up at Professor O'Leary.

"Ah... and here I had thought you had decided to not come today. I need you wait until you are invited before entering my office again, although, kudos on getting in here undetected. You should teach Ion a thing or two about sneaking up on people. Now... out all of you!"

She shooes them out into the hall, smiling as she closes the door behind her.

In Trouble Already

Briar Underfoot
Director's Office
Week 1 - Monday Early Afternoon

Skipping around the chairs, He stopped in his tracks when The Professor started speaking to him. Immediately facing her with his head held down as if it was a drilled response from years harsh treatment.

He is three foot two and dressed in earth toned clothing. His black hair is pulled back in a tight ponytail. The tail of which is in the form of several braids dropping to the top of his backpack.

When he was sure she was done speaking for the moment, he replied back to her,"Sneaking up on people? I didn't mean to sneak up, but I thought I was invited. The letter I got said to come to Professor O'Leary's office upon arrival. And I did." With that out the door he went, not letting it close on him.

Once in the hall, he said,"This place is hugh. Glad your giving tours. I would take a while to find what secrets lie in these walls. So, which one needs help? and which one is enamored?"

Face licked (Levanna)

Levanna Amarker listened intently to the professor. When she heard what sounded like someone tapping outside the professors door.

“Kired come in here please!” Professor O’leary’s voice called from her office. Ion spun around falaped to her door and gingerly opened it.

“Professor! You called?” He said.

“Yes… is that Shadow borne behind you there?”

“Sure no problem.” Ion says.

“If you’ll follow me I’ll give you the grand tour and then show you a couple a shortcuts so you won’t always be late for class. You never wanna be late for Professor Tann’Talas’ class trust me.” He turns fully expecting the newbies to follow him and clacks his way down the hall.

Levanna quickly wipes the rest of the face lick off her face and quickly follows Kired and Shadow borne down the halls. The halls twisted and turned some were large while others if it weren’t for the fact that Levanna was raised by Elves she would have never been able to fit though. She noticed many other halls that Ion seemed to big to try to fit through and figured that the gnome that had face licked her would do a better job fitting in them and that they were probably built for him.

“So Ion what grove do you come from? You look like you would have fit very well in my grove but I don’t believe we’ve meet before.” Levanna asks as she looks around at the many statues and nearly runs into Shadowborne.

Just loving the first day here

Darkon
Director's Office
Week 1-Early Monday morning

A facelick is never a good first sign on the first day of a new school. I hope this place has at least some useful classes.

Oh the director is talking to us I should nod and pretend that i'm intrested.

I wonder what the others in this school are like. I suppose i'll find out soon enough.

I turn around to look at Kired and Shadowborn as Professor O'leary calls to them. They start talking about the gruel they serve and I know that this school may have been beter advertised than it is on paper. Still the training will be really good and I suppose i'm going to have to get used to stuff like crazy facelicks and who knows maybe the gruel will taste better than stale bread rations I had on my way here.

And most importantly at least while i'm adventuring in duengeons it'll be alot easier to see whose your enemies and whose your allies.

Oh apperantly were going on a tour to find our rooms and... hey that halflings pretty sneaky, I might have to take lessons from him too.

Then I hear Levanna say "“ So Ion what grove do you come from? You look like you would have fit very well in my grove but I don’t believe we’ve meet before.”

I spit on the floor and mutter darkly under my breath "Why would anyone care about one of those stupid groves. One group of traitorus backstabbers is like the next if you ask me."

I take a deap breath and remember that I came here to forget about them, so i push the murderous thoughts that pop in my mind out, calm down, and think about the adventuring which is why i'm here.

When i'm thinking about adventuring I realize that i'll have to sign up for some classes while i'm here, preferably ones that specialize in skills on tracking and fighting. Shadowborn looks pretty tough so I ask him "Hey, Shadowborn, what classes will teaches us the most about melee fighting and dungeon skills?"

A sneer and flash of anger

Steelight Shadowborne
Main Corridor
Week 1 - Monday Afternoon

"Hey, Shadowborn, what classes will teaches us the most about melee fighting and dungeon skills" Darkon says just as Levanna almost runs into the elder student.

In a flash he spins around, fire blazing in his eyes and speaks in a low, calm and angry voice.

"Careful where you step little halfling. There are many here who would just as soon put you under their boot. And you elf... I wouldn't spit on these floors if I were you. The professor doesn't particularly care for it."
Without another word he turns back around and continues down the hallway. After a few moments he speaks again.

"Tann'Talas will teach you all you need to know of the martial arts elf. Though he does tend to go a too easy on beginners."

Concerns

Briar Underfoot
Main Corridor
Week 1 - Monday Afternoon

When Shadowborne spun and made his comment to the halfling about many here that could put a halfling under their boot, Briar's imagination began to race.

Without another word, Shadowborne turns back around and continues down the hallway. After a few moments, he speaks again.

"Tann'Talas will teach you all you need to know of the martial arts, goblin. Though he does tend to go a too easy on beginners."

Briar got a concerned look on his face, "They teach giants here as well? Guess I need to work on defending myself against them."

He seemed to be lost in thought now. He began muttering to himself under his breath, something about finding a spiked helmet so they don't complete step down if he gets stepped on.

More Initiation?

The Codge Trio
RedWyrm Cafeteria
Week 1 – Monday afternoon

Ion and Steelight continued to show the new students around the school. The first place they stopped was the dormitories. Each student was given their own room, something that most students did not complain about. The amenities were somewhat Spartan, but adequate. The rooms are just large enough for a twin sized bed, a small wardrobe, a desk and a chair. Across from the door there is a neat little square window in the wall, the courtyard it looks out into depends on what side of the hallway you are on. Those facing North get a view of the combat training grounds, those facing South get a view of the labyrinth that spreads out toward the nearby forest. Each room has a chalkboard plaque on the door, the name of the student who occupies it is scrawled on it.

After giving them a few minutes to drop off their belongings the tour continued.

The building was complex, and it was rumored that it really didn’t end. One hallway had green grass growing on the floor instead of carpet, faint music drifted down it. ‘The Gateway to Audalis’ the senior students called it. It would lead you to another world that many went to after graduating to become great adventurers.

There were hallways that were musky and smelled of knowledge. The ‘Articles’ room held texts written by famous adventurers. The ‘Armoury’ emitted noises of gears turning and billows of steam poured out from under the door. Small imps scurried in and out making sure that the machines that assisted adventurers kept running smoothly. The ‘Vault’ and the ‘Archives’ were libraries with treasures the new students looked at with awe.

A billboard of ‘Blogs’ fluttered with the wisdom of the RedWyrm facility. There was a hall which laughter bubbled out of all times of the day and night.

Finally they wound up in a large open room cluttered with chairs and tables. One wall had a long counter affixed to it and above it an opening led to the kitchen. Bowls with steaming pale colored gruel rested on the counter, just waiting for someone brave enough to pick them up and attempt to eat them. A plate sat next to the bowls, laden with dry cold toast. There was also a large bowl with bits of cheese stuck to the bottom, apparently the only way to make the gruel edible is to cover it in cheese, which has already been depleted for the day and explains the remaining bowls of gruel on the counter.

Stomachs grumbling everyone gets a bowl and settles at a table. Next to them three half orcs were eating their own, cheese covered, bowls.

Ion and Steelight would recognize the trio as ‘fourth year students’ whose names had been scrawled on their doors for over six years now, but who were finally up for the final examinations this coming spring. The reason it has taken so long to get to this point might have something to do with their sour dispositions, trouble with authority and overall inability to get along with others.

With a grin on his face the tallest of the three leans over and grins at the group.
“I be needin’ seconds, thanks for bringing it over…” he says while his hand reaches over and snags Amaker’s bowl from under her nose.

Well, let's see how Levanna handles this. Steelight smirks a bit and gives Levanna a significant glance, then goes back to choking down the gruel.

Trouble already

Darkon
Cafeteria
week 1-Monday Afternoon

Well this gruel looks as yummy as it promised to be. On the other hand though at least this food will prepare us for the endless trail rations, shuffled around in our sacks as we travel through swamps, tundras, and deserts and who knows what else as an adventurer.

Still food is food and Darkon's stomach told him that if your hungry enough anything tastes good.

Darkon hears a commotion from the half-orc table and see's that they've taken Levanna's gruel. I think to myself in outrage that it may be disgusting but that dosn't give you any right to take it. Then I think it's time to show these fools to pick on someone there own size. But, just before Darkon goes to confront them, he stops. I think to myself about what i'm about to do.

wait a moment, if I go take that gruel away it'll make Levanna seem weak, which will just make them pick on her more, which will make me have to intervene more, and one time they'll get her and I won't be around.

Thats not fair, I can't get involved here. I think to myself.

Just before Darkon turns away to Levanna deal with it herself, I think and realize that it also isn't fair to leave here to try and deal with three half-orcs all fairly well trained and pretty tough looking.

So Darkon moves up to beside Levanna in a relaxed, but confident position, with his hands lightly resting on the pommels of his blades. He looks down and gives her a supporting grin and waits for her to make the first move.

Stolen Lunch

At first Levanna is in shock she can't believe that someone could be so rude. She notices a man coming up behind her and firmly puts his hands on the hilts of his blades.

She laughs at herself " You'll have to do better then that if you want my gruel."

Slowly but surely the gruel is lifted above the half orcs head. Who stupidly grabs for it, " You want it so bad go and get it."

The gruel goes zooming out of the kitchen and toward the Head profossers office.

(Assuming response can edit if different)

Well that took care of one of those big olfs. Levanna turns around to see the other two half orcs get up weapons in hand.

"Well let's see if this scares you."

Suddenly there are ghostly sounds that could be heard that would frighten anyone if you didn't know that it was levanna making the noise through her magic.

(Levanna attempted mage hand and ghost sounds)

Zeph

Zeph Blighthunter
Cafeteria
Week One - Monday Afternoon

As the tour group had made its way down the hall toward the cafeteria they had failed to notice the short, hooded figure limping down the hall behind them accompanied by a wolf. If they had noticed him they may have tried to talk to him, and the last thing he wanted was a handful of freshmen trying to poke fun at him.

Another year, another group of fools to contend with, I just need to remember this is for the better good..., he thought as he hung back to avoid catching up with the group.

No sooner than the group of fish had made there way into the cafeteria Zeph caught sight of what appeared to be, and turned out to be, a flying bowl of gruel. Instinctively he dodged over to the wall as the bowl flew over his head, he had learned from a young age to dodge things that were thrown at him, a skill that had come in handy even now.

Grumbling under his breath he thought to himself as he made it to the cafeteria doorway, I had hoped to avoid those brutish orc-kin, but it would appear that isn't going to happen, who else could be behind something like this?
Before entering the area he made sure to adjust his hood to hide his face as best he could and motioned for Sintan to come to his side as they walked into the room and headed for the available bowls of food. He looked up only briefly to see that the Orcs were harassing a Halfling and an Elf. He shook his head slowly as he reached for his bowl and thought to himself, Maybe this could work out for the greater good, they may kill the Elf and get kicked out of the school, or the Elf may manage to kill them and get himself kicked out. Either outcome works for me, no more Orcs, no new Elf.. On the plus side though, at least for once they seem to have someone other than me to pick on...
Carrying his now cold bowl of gruel to a far table away from the commotion he sat down and began spooning the slop into his mouth, trying to remain hidden under the hood as he did so, hoping to draw no attention from either group and for once enjoy a meal without having a bowl broken in his general vicinity.
