Audalis: Tides of War: Recruitment Thread

Kaelyn’s got that new game fever!
So here it is the middle of the week, I’m caught up on all my games, and with free time to boot. What does one do? Get another job? Make up for severe sleep deprivation? OR, find yet another small way to spend more time on the beloved Red Dragon Inn.

The choice was obvious.

I’ve been mulling around the thought of starting a new game in our very own Audalis Campaign Setting; one I’ve played in plenty of times but never had the privilege of running adventures in. So, I’ve decided to do something about that.

So without further adieu I bring you.

Audalis: Tides of War:

Edition: 3.5 (2e conversions available, just ask!)
Starting City/ Country: Ethryn / Ertain
Starting level: 5th
Stat Adjustment: 4d6 drop the lowest add rest together
Stating Funds: 6,000gp
Races/Classes Allowed: Those native to Audalis
Number of players: 4-6
Posting Rate: 1/week

Recruitment Restrictions:
There’s only one Restriction: This game is open for those whom I have never DM’ed for before. That’s right, all my loyal gamers; you’ll have to sit this one out. This game is for those new and old of RDI that I’ve not had the privilege of writing a story for before.
So, all those new who are looking for adventure, and all you Moderator’s and A-Listers whom I’ve played with but not had the pleasure of running a game for step forth, and break the wall between the two groups.

Writing Sample: New or old, I'd like a sample of writing in response to the following, so I can get a feel for your style of writing and roleplay.

It had been weeks since Jarom Brightblade and the Ertainian Court had heard from Tharandul Greystave, his Academy representatives, or anyone at all from the city of Felarin, nestled deep in the woods for which the city gets its name. With increased signs of Sendrian military activity to the north, and rumor of all manner of shadowy figure and tale of monster in Felarin Woods, the Council has determined that word of the City’s welfare must be established, and as such a call has been put out for adventurers to heed the crown’s request for scouts and reconnaissance on the situation.

One would hope that a call from the King would pack the Iron Boar pub to the rafters with applicants; but it would appear that fear of the Felarin woods overpowers the common man’s sense of duty or honor. Only a handful of would be heroes, or those hoping to have the royalty indebted to them have arrived thus far.

Bugsy, a portly bartender with years of partakin of his own greasy servings evident as it seeped through his pores and shone in the lantern light, wiped down an aged and stained countertop. His bald pate bore numerous lumps and old bruises, likely from many a bar scuffle over the years. He scanned the common room as the last of the applicants were ushered upstairs, leaving the common folk to their drink in silence. It had been raining a heavy downpour this night, and thunder broke the silence of the tavern with a cacophonous roar. Suddenly, the door opened in a start, lightning flashing across the darkened sky, illuminating the figure in the doorway.

Hehe

I must say.

Way to restrict the game as to cut out half the people on the Inn.

Hello. My Writing sample.

Blackly shadowed against violent jagged lightning, The figure in the doorway hesitates for the space of only heartbeats before spying the bar. Movement is fluid, a strutting sway of hip betrays the entrant as female. though shape is hidden by a damp cloak whose hem spweeps the floor, unmistakable are the signs of long legs clad in black leather.

There is no sound of bootheels against the worn floorboards. The woman beneath the cloak casts hazy pale green eyes about the dimly lit room and orders the house ale with a soft, low voice like the whisper of a lover before your heart breaks. Her very smile was unkind, a slight and insincere upturn of lip, and only at one corner, never reachig her eyes.

She slid the coins across the bar with leatherclad fingertips, slowly, drawing out, making the poor balding barkeep wait. Oh, she so enjoyed making them wait. Yte with so few patrons, her choice in playmates for her precios, painful games were limited.

Character Audition for Audalis: Tides of War

Lightning flashed and thunder rolled as the mysterious hooded figure in an Elven War Cloak stood outlined in the doorway to the Iron Boar pub.

Most people would have hurried as quickly as possible into the warmth and comfort of the tavern on such a dreary night as this, but the downpour of rain seemed to invigorate the tall stranger as he remained motionless against the backdrop of the storm, surveying the interior meticulously before finally stepping inside.

Bugsy continued wiping the bar, shaking his head while muttering to himself about how it took all kinds to make Audalis the world that it is and how this particular neck of the woods seemed to attract some of the most bizarre patrons in the country.

The hooded figure strode directly to the barkeep and slammed a gold coin on the counter top, demanding a bottle of his finest ale.

Bugsy looked at the stranger, mumbling something about manners and respect, but he stammered to a shaky silence when the tall stranger quickly leaned over the bar, removing the hood of his rain stained Elven War Cloak to reveal a hauntingly familiar face highlighted by a jagged scar underneath his left eye and a curious looking eye patch covering his right eye.

Slowly the stranger lifted the eye patch and stared at Bugsy, finally lowering the eye patch with a wry smile as Bugsy hurried to fetch a bottle of his finest brew.

"Evil Eye Ezlarog ... right here in my tavern ... welcome to the Iron Boar pub ..." Bugsy breathed the genuine greeting with a mixture of surprise and awe as he set the bottle in front of the man, then slid the gold coin next to the bottle as was his well known custom to do when honoring men and women of reknown who graced his tavern with their presence which always provided a boost to his business and his position in the community, "... but I heard ... you were dead ..."

Shotgun!

Hey can I have dibs on a spot just before I make my post?

Okay. Here's my post:

The shadowed figure hurried inside the Iron Boar pub to escape the cold, onslaught of rain. Already drenched with water, the traveller was dripping, creating a track of water as he walked into the pub. The trail of water was slowly disappeared, evaporating off the cold stone floor as the traveller walked farther. He chose a seat near the far corner of the pub and began to settle himself. He shook out his clothes and took his belongings out of his bag to check if they were ruined. His eyes darted around the room, making sure no one was looking.

He took a book, wrinkled, creased, and folded, out of his bag. Slowly placing it on the table, he carefully turned the brittle pages of the rune covered tome. He fell back in his chair and let out a sigh. He was greatly relieved that his precious spell book, one that was passed down from generations, was not damaged by the rain. The man quickly glanced across the room and carefully put the book back in his bag.

Bugsy finally took a more concerned look at the newcomer sitting in the empty corner of his pub. The large bartender knew well from his decades of work at the bar that this was no ordinary man, despite his common appearance. The man was hidden underneath his clothes; his face was covered under the shadow of his hat, hiding all of his features. But it was his figure that told the most part of the traveller’s story; he was an elf. His short, thin figure stood out from the short, broader body of the other humans of this area. Elves would only come to human territory for special reasons. The bartender knew he was here for something more than just a drink.

The bartender walked over to the traveller. He saw as he came closer to the elf how small he really was. The elf acted nervously as the large bartender came closer; his eyes darted around the room looking for the closest escape route. But the bartender looked at the elf, smiled warmly and said, “I think you’d be more welcome upstairs. I know who you are, come. What is your name,
sylvas?”

The elf jumped, surprised that a human knew the tongue of his people. He began to act a little more calmly, “My name is Ilya Amakiir. You are right in your assumption of what I am, but I feel that you have missed much in your assumption,” he said cooly, “For there is much more than meets the eye, Bugsy.” Ilya smirked as the human stood in awe at his knowledge. The elf said quietly, “Take me upstairs. I feel that I’d be more comfortable there.”

Audalis information

I chose Audalis partially because it allowed everyone to have access to the same wonderful resources, contributed by our very own Innmates, here on RDI.

If you look to the Menu bar goin along the top uner the banner, next to 'Home' is the 'Audalis' Tab, with maps, information on the country, people of import, legends, religions, races, cultures and more.

All your standard races are there, from humans to Elves (which are called Sylvari) to Dwarves (Which are called Khordaldrum or Khords) to Halflings (Cidals) and more. There are cultural based races, lizard folk (the Slaa'kar) and others. There are even Kobolds, though it doesn't seem like my entry for Kobolds has made it into the drop down menu yet, they are there!

Anyways, I urge you to look through all the wonderful information that brings Audalis to life, and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask and I'll help in any way I can.

Hammer THrowin Spiders, WElcome, Brodeur, the writing sample though not what I specified is fine If you have any questions let me know.

AS for Classes:

I've got dozens of resources for classes and prestige classes, but I'm gonna try and stick with the Complete Series, Unearthed Arcana, PHB, PHB2, DMG, DMG2, or the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting which prestige classes (except for the Shadow Adept) can easily be modified into Audalis.

If there's an idea you're intereted in but don't know a class to suit it, Ask! I've got resrouces covering dozens of classes and prestige classes, from Blasters and bombadiers, warmages and walocks and witches and shamans, to pirates and swashbuckers to cavaliers and knights, assassins and alchemists to zealots and emmisaries, diplomats and politicians to temptresses and animal lords, beastmasters to bladesingers and the list goes on.

I had something in mind for this particular character, but I will search around and maybe stumble upon some answers before asking Kaelyn any specific questions!

Thanks for the info and the invite!

A sample.

Drew Vertiglade shifted his gaze ever so slightly when the door opened and the flashing lighning intermitantly oulined a figure in the doorway. Few had come this eve and he had watched them all as they arrived making mental note of each. 'Hopefully this one has word for it is getting late." he thought to himself. For most of the day he had waited at the table in the far corner of the inn and though he had picked up a great deal of information in the form of local gossip he was growing a bit impatient.

Would he be allowed to take on a quest? His stature would certainly not work in his favor for few would think a human of slight build who walked with a bit of a limp a candidate for adventure. It was his mind that was his strength but those sent to recruit were usually more interested in heavily muscled types who could swing a sword. On rare occasions he had managed to find those who understood that someone with his talent for listening and gathering information could be useful; of course his other talent usually came in handy as well. Few chose the combination of skills he had come to enjoy as they seemed to be at odds but he found them to be rather complimentary. 'Wonder if they have ever even seen another rougue-cleric before.' he thought as he watched and waited.

I am not real familiar with Audalis but if you are happy with the sample I will do some reading on it. As for character creation I might need abit of help as I am a 2ed player (for about 21 years now) and do not have much experience in 3ed. I could play the character described above or anything that is needed really as I am pretty flexible. If you want a bit more writing sample I am in Trilogy War and Garyon-Reign of Darkness.
