Topic: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: And now for a much overdue post

Mid Afternoon

“Rather, we figure he ran. A couple hundred feet from the bow the grass was stained with dried blood, it was an even bigger mess than where the body was found,” said the second man, “near there we found a quiver’s worth of arrows and this dagger.” He laid the items out on the table. The arrows were clean and in decent condition, however the dagger was indiscriminately covered with splattered blood.

I felt quite a dilemma, trying to picture what could have happened, while not trying to picture what could have happened. The bloodstained dagger made the latter very difficult. I wondered whether the blood on the dagger was his or the beasts. If it was the demon dog's then he managed to wound it but not kill it. If it was his the dog managed to kill him before he could even wound it. Considering he had shot an arrow, it is unlikely he got caught by surprise.

A chill ran down my spine. This was a trained hunter who was killed. What chance did we stand? All we had fought were some slow moving corpses and several bandits. I had no idea of what the extent of the new abilities we had obtained were. Especially mine. My knowledge of magic was extremely limited, I doubted that shining a light in the dog's face would cause it to flee in terror. While I was a decent fighter I still had difficulty making my attacks hit home.

The truth is that I had little chance of winning if the demon dog turned out to be really strong. No, it wasn't just me, none of us did. Despite our new abilities what we lacked was experience. What would be do if a huge wolflike creature suddenly leapt out of the bushes and attacked us. Would we manage to collect our wits soon enough to fight intelligently or would we just end up flailing our weapons at it. What we needed was some kind of edge, something that we know would give us an advantage. It really doesn't matter how large this advantage is, merely having a plan might be enough to keep us calm.

I highly doubted we'd be able to find poison in a small town but it was worth a shot to ask. So far the pit seemed to be the most sensible idea. The only issue was time. Digging a pit large enough to accomodate for however big the dog is would be no simple task. However night was approaching and we did not want to be attacked while we were focused on digging the pit. We would have to start it tomorrow, but that did little good for us if it attacked tonight.

Sunset and Twilight

Many of the villagers had gathered in the church and town hall, I didn't like this. Sure it would be easier to protect them but if the demon dog managed to slip through our guard it would little trouble finding potential meals.

I had felt guilty about what I had said earlier for quite some time but I only had time to address it now that it was still and silent. It was not that they didn't care about the villager's lives, maybe they just hadn't judged the situation as I had. Perhaps I was wrong too, who knows if the demon dog will end up attacking people. They had chosen the honorable approach, helping the people that we had promised to help. I had just done what set my conscience most at ease. Ray especially had seemed hurt by my accusation. I didn't intend to say it as I did, it just came out that way.

I was so immersed in my thoughts that when I heard the howl I jumped. My heart started racing and the blood pooled in my head. All of my mental preparation for this was falling apart. I needed to calm down. I thought back to the old world and climbing competitions. I'd always be so nervous right before I climbed. Fortunately from that I knew how to calm myself. I took in slow breaths and closed my eyes.

This was quite different from climbing however, whereas normally I'd only have to worry about falling and broken or bruised limbs now it was my life that was at risk if I were to fail. But I couldn't think about failing, that only helped to heighten my heart rate. People around me seemed to be having the same issues as me. Strangely their panic helped me calm down. My heart rate was now approaching a normal range.

I approached Ian, Galen and Ben. "Were do you think we should guard?"

Some posts would be nice. This is just to give Sibelius time to don his armor and the group to get to know each other. If you feel you have nothing to post that I shall press on towards Thomas' estate.

Subject: Food.

No food, anywhere. Despite his failures Bravish was determined to find somewhere where he could find food without having to talk to anyone. For the past couple minutes he had been staking out random buildings and trying to see if people left them looking well fed. This wasn't all that easy to pick out.

While he did not make any progress finding food, he did become more knowledgable about how things worked in these small villages. First off, it was apparently not wise to stare into people's windows waiting for them to eat. He had also learned, quite quickly after his first lesson, that an old women who may look quite frail can generate quite a bit of force with a well placed swing of a broom.

As he rubbed the bruise on his head he continued his search. As a strong gust of wind blew across his face he recognized a familiar aroma. He paused and his nose twitched gathering in the scent. Quickly his eyes darted towards a rather large building. With almost inhuman speed he ran towards the door and kicked it open with a force that very nearly knocked it down. A man now lay unconscious on the floor in front of him however this did nothing to stall his progress. He ran to the counter, unknowingly stepping on the fallen man on his way, and slammed his fist on it.

"I would like some pork."

Topic: Tome of Battle
Subject: ToB = overpowered (usually)

Now, while I think that ToB is overpowered I'd have to say that how overpowered it is definitely depends on the DM's style. In a single encounter a mage can overtake a martial adept with no trouble.

While a well made martial adept can match a spellcaster for damage it lacks versatility. However since there is generally more than one encounter per day spellcasters eventually fall behind. Spellcasters have to conserve their spells, they can't just lob fireballs at any enemy they want (and that usually won't deal as much damage as a maneuver anyways). Spellcasters can cast the occasional well placed spell to deal relatively large damage, but most of the time they need to limit themselves to low level spells that can do as much damage as a fighter's normal attacks.

Now a warblade can deal more damage with his maneuvers relatively easily (but not necessarily at the same range) take as much damage as a barbarian and if he happens to run out of maneuvers he can just resort to regular fighting at a level equal to that of an average fighter (considering the stances). And it just so happens that if he uses a single normal attack all of his maneuvers are replenished.

As it has already been done I shall use warlocks as a basic guildline for at will abilities. Warlocks- deal mediocre damage, have limited melee ability, low hit die, flight, and practically no versatility spells. Marital adept- deal high damage, excellent melee ability, high hit die, flight at higher levels (for the swordsage), and practically no versatility spells. In my opinion martial adept's would be much more balanced if they had limited usages of their abilities so that they could be compared to spellcasters rather than warlocks.

Oh yes, expanding on the point that I started with: A warblade's usefulness largely depends on the DM's style. A DM who uses more puzzles or allows creative solutions to taking care of enemies would increase the usefulness of spellcasters. But in a simple dungeon hack scenario, martial adepts take the cake.

Subject: Food, drinks and venues containing both

"Well I'm glad that we've finally got this all arranged," Thomas says eager to continue along quickly while the group is still interested in helping him, "As for Matthias' question you are free to depart as soon as you're ready although I'd advise leaving within the hour as I do not trust the goblins to be considerate enough to wait for your arrival. On the note of drawing a map I should be able to give you a rough sketch, I'm sorry that I don't have blue prints but I was in sort of a rush when I left my house."
He pauses for several seconds,"You seem to be a relatively harmless lot," He gestures towards a large wooden building down the road in the direction of the city. "If you wish to stock up on food or any rest before leaving there's a..." He nonchalantly glances down at something written on his right hand as he continues, "...'Venue for purchasing food, alcoholic beverages and various other drinks' just down the road, its called the 'Hobbling Goat.' It'd be a convenient place to get a meal or set as a meeting point when you're all prepared. In fact I'll be waiting there once you've finished with your reward money. On that note I should probably be off to collect it. Remember, leave within the hour but the earlier you're ready the better." With that he collects his backpack and begins jogging down the path towards the city, darting into the 'Venue for the purchase of food, alcoholic beverages and various other drinks' briefly before darting back out and continuing along the road.

For anyone who enters the 'Hobbling Goat' -- Under sign of the 'Hobbling Goat' (which bears a picture of a Goat with crutches) are the words "The best 'Venue for purchasing food, alcoholic beverages and various other drinks' since 49567" The (for sake of expediency) 'venue' has a very calm and cosy appearance, it is constructed mostly of wood and has several windows from which a warm glow can be seen. The inside of the venue maintains this cosy appearance almost to an excess, on the walls beside the large men sitting on the barstools somberly downing ale are posters with kittens hanging from trees with the words 'hang in there' written on the top. Upon entering seven of these posters are clearly visible. However the rest of the venue does not share this appearance, the posters clash horribly with the rest of the establisment. The 'venue'tender is a particularily burly dwarf who is currently washing glasses and whistling behind the counter. His current height suggests that he is either standing on a stool or a pile of stacked books. On closer inspection it can be noticed that there is a man passed out on the counter who looks awfully like the mustached man who was minding the stand before Thomas arrived. In his hand is a sandwich that has only has one bite out of it, and oddly enough there are no empty drinks in front of him although this could easily be attributed to the Dwarf currently washing a glass. Beside him is a thin man in a tall black robe that covers all of his features. The figure in the tall black robe is giving the mustached man occasional sideways glances.
(You can use this time to prepare for the upcoming adventure, introduce yourselves to your teamates and head along to the 'Hobbling Goat' NOTE: If you wish to narrate NPC actions make sure you PM me before doing so as I might need to correct them or delay their response until my next post)

Subject: Bravish

Undead, in my mountains? Isn't that just bloody brilliant. The cold wind blew across his numb face. and this weather to top it off, aint I just the luckiest man alive. Bravish was used to the mountain weather but this was worse than usual. Usually the weather would let up long enough to allow him to regain his strength. But it hadn't let up a bit all week. To make it worse he was quite certain that the weather was still on the decline, continually getting windier and colder. At first he thought that this was the reason for the lack of wildlife but after seeing the undead he began to wonder more about the weather. He was beginnning to doubt about whether or not it was natural.

As Druids go Bravish never considered himself all that 'one with nature'. It was more of a give take relationship between them. He would use the mountains to help him survive and in return anyone who felt like harming it would have him to answer to. He didn't defend it out of some sense of duty, he was completely content in knowing that everything he did was out of self interest. He loved the mountains, the crisp air, the panoramic views and the constant fight for survival. If anyone wished to try and take it from him, they were free to try. Just don't blame him if their blood stains the snow. Considering hes never felt anything from the forest before, the pain he felt emanating from it made him very nervous. But first came food.

Whenever possible he avoided going to town. He couldn't stand the townsfolk, they always seemed to be complaining about some little problem. Everything is practically given to them and they still manage to find issue with it. This was only the second time hes visited, the first was for directions. As he walked into town he avoided eye contact. If he remembered anything about his last visit it was the small talk. You give them the slightest opportunity and they will babble on forever about whatever they feel will break the ice. This would have been much easier if he was less noticeable. He stood at 6'8" making him tower above the ordinary man. His hair was a dark brown and obviously hadn't been cut in several months, it was draped in front of his face and went down to his shoulders in the back, he also had a short but messy beard covering a fair portion of his lower face. His eyes were barely visible beneath his hair. His clothes were made of bear hide and he carried a shield made of bones and wood on his back alongside an ordinary quarterstaff. A small man tried to force in some small talk but Bravish gave him no notice as he continued along the path. He then suddenly stopped in his tracks. He had no idea where he could buy food. Realizing he would have to ask someone about it he pressed his hand against his face and groaned. The small talk would be unavoidable.

By the way, I almost completely forgot about the suggestion Sibelius made on the previous page, we are in serious need of character descriptions. Would you all be able to send me a brief (or detailed if you want) description of your character? I'll be posting them somewhere, as of yet undecided, for easy reference. I know that some people have already included them in their first post, so for them would you be able to collect what you wrote together and send it to me?

Adressing Hundover's question he says with a hint of distaste, "As you are mercenaries I assume you shall expect a monetary payment, and indeed I shall provide that. How would 300 gold a piece sound? Do not worry about the gold though, that is not what is secured inside the vault. The second half of your payment is inside the vault, and when I say second half I am not at all referring to the value. As you are an inquisitive bunch I am sure that you will want to know what the second half is, however that is where I shall have to draw the line. If you complete this task you shall receive both halves of the reward, that is all I may tell you. Even without what's inside the vault, I think you shall find that the monetary reward is very generous."

Subject: Ah, but he does know something

The man motions to speak but then stops appearing to have changed his mind. After a slight pause he continues "I'm guessing that if I told you that I know they haven't stolen anything that still wouldn't be enough. Well, they haven't stolen anything yet." The man takes in a deep breath that in most cases signifies the start of an expositional story. This is most cases.

"Considering your recent inquisitions I'm fairly certain that you already suspected this, at least to some extent. It was not just a random band of goblins that took over my house. It was-", He looked at the band of adventurers rather sheepishly, "an infamous band of golbin pirates." Expecting laughter he paused for several seconds. "As unorthodox as it may sound it is true. They have been a thorn in the side of traders all across Altria, the fact that no one takes them seriously gives them a huge edge. I am especially guilty of making that mistake..." As he says this his face turns a reddish hue, he continues quickly trying to avoid questions on the matter. "Their captain is truly... fearsome comes to mind, although excentric works just as well."

"Anyways, before the pirates attacked an old friend asked if he would be able to use one of my ships for a delivery as his was in dire need for repair. I happen to owe him several favors and this required very little of me so I accepted. No sooner was the ship loaded when the goblins attacked. Me and the crew of the ship were kicked out and the supplies were transferred to the pirates ship. By now I had expected the supplies to be gone and all of my belongins to have disappeared. However this is not the case. I don't know why but the pirate's ship has still not left my estate. As it is, I am responsible for the supplies and if any of them are missing it will come out of my pocket. If you can reach my estate and stop the pirates before they depart than you will get the reward. If they happen to leave before you arrive there than all that you've lost is the time it takes to get there. Once again I must emphasize that the reward will be substantial."

"If you are willing to help me I shall give you a map to my estate." As he says this he reaches into a backpack that you did not notice before, however you can be completely certain that it was there all along. He pulls out a map and prepares to unfold it as he awaits your answers.

The Xbox is fixed and now works perfectly. Your cold fusion generator however doesn't. Due to a flaw in construction it fails to control the rate of the reaction causing it to cause a massive explosion consuming you, your home and the greater half of your city. By some freak accident your game and Xbox escape harm completely.

EDIT: Oh yeah, wish. I wish that the next person who posts wouldn't corrupt my wish.

Subject: Compensation? Who said anything about compensation?

"Goblins." He says. However feeling that he may have to elaborate on this he continues, "My name is Thomas Burswater, you probably haven't heard of me but I'm a fairly well known nautical engineer. My estate lies just south of the city. Just a couple of days ago a band of goblins seized it and kicked me out. I contacted the city guard requesting of their help, but it would appear they've gone on strike until the taverns reopen." He then directs his attention to Baron and Sir Vanlen Kindern, "As for compensation, I assure you you will all be paid handsomely. However," He pauses for a moment for emphasis, "I have one condition involving the payment. Inside my estate are many valuables, if you manage to chase away the goblins I want to be certain that you haven't taken anything. If I return and everything is accounted for you shall recieve your reward."

"Don't worry about your reward being taken, I've hidden it in a large black safe inside the estate that is next to impossible to break into. Only a master theif would even have a chance at getting in." He stops for several seconds pondering why all he didn't put all his valuables in there. "Are you willing to get rid of the goblins for me?"
