“Axeaxe Thunderbeard” might need to make an appearance in my next AD&D game.

Think I'll pass on “Kok Goblinmaker"!

Subject: The Castor & Pollux

Stirring from a deep and feverish slumber as the last wan rays of sunlight dwindled and faded overhead and the earth began to cool about him, Deodatus was restored to full consciousness in the claustrophobic pitch-black of a sealed grave. The vampire turned and twisted angrily in his underground cocoon, the densely packed dark earth hemming in his every movement as he struggled to find the space and leverage to rise.

Scrabbling fingers, ragged nails already thick with grave dirt, met with matted soil and small, sharp pebbles as the vampire pulled and clawed his way towards the surface. Every muscle in his upper body was coiled like a spring as he willed it upwards, his ascendant form finally bursting through the surface with the force of an arrow and a brief, satisfied grunt of effort. The emerging vampire allowed his body to lay still among the scattered soil for several long moments, his long-dead muscles still burning from the force of this unnatural effort, before hauling himself stiffly to his feet to kick in the sprawling crater which marked the site of his passage.

The night air was cold and clean on his broad face, a cool night breeze playing through his short soldier’s beard and tangled hair. From somewhere in the near distance, he could make out the pungent reek of stale urine and burning pig fat on the wind, and his nostrils flexed slightly, taking in the slightly salty, unsavoury aroma… there would be a tannery not far from here. A series of deep-throated yapping howls rent the still night air from somewhere not too far off, and the hairs on the back of the hulking vampire’s ox-like neck bristled sharply to attention, as his inner beast brindled slightly at this obscured animal’s challenge.

Shrugging the moment off with a frustrated scowl, Deodatus strode swiftly onwards. The sheathed blade of the veteran’s gladius swung rhythmically by his side as he walked, a cumbersome but reassuring weight, until at last the warm orange light of his destination loomed brightly before him. A battered wooden sign swung and creaked noisily on its rusted hinge overhead, and without much thinking the dead man glanced up. The faded depiction of two muscle-bound Olympian youths, apparently sporting with woodland nymphs, greeted his indifferent gaze as the vampire stepped inside. He was here at least.

The smoke-filled air inside tasted of sweat and spilled wine but, even through the haze, he spotted his man readily enough. Manius, the contact he’d come here to meet, sat alone at a table on the other side of the room, mulling over a beaker of acrid red wine and idly watching the waitresses go by. The vampire thumped a fist against his hollow chest in an ironic military salute as he approached the table from one side. “Salve, Manius,” the vampire barked, watching as the short, wiry man started slightly in surprise. “Heard you might have some work for me this evening,” Deodatus continued by way of explanation, a blunt smile playing across his thin lips as he waited for an answer.

Subject: Good to go

Bryson pulled his car around and, forcing back a gut impulse from somewhere within his primitive lizard brain to simply turn back round and high-tail it out of the town he’d called home for the past five years, made his way at a slow, deliberate crawl into the soon-to-be deserted parking lot. The minister made a slow scan of the scene as his car pulled in and quickly crossed himself as his eyes picked out the signs of violent struggle -bloodstains on the pavement and shards of broken glass from shattered car windows. Still, his ready apprehension was tinted by a sense of guilty relief… perhaps he wasn’t going mad quite yet after all.

Lisa drew his attention to a pair of figures making their way across from the other side of the parking lot, and Bryson followed her well-manicured finger to the sight of the strange couple. “What’s going on here?” the minister called across abruptly, in his broad Tennessee drawl, rapidly winding down his side window. After a brief pause he continued, still suspicious but perhaps slightly regretting his harsh manner, “could you folks use a ride?”

Nice one, though some of the fantasy name combinations seem a bit goofy. (Oakdelver, Marbleforger, Swordheart, Oathfoot)

If I remember correctly the 2nd edition Complete Dwarves’ Handbook had a random name generator along the same sort of lines (noun + noun/verb), you might find it a handy resource to dip into if you’re still looking for combinations.

Edit: Oh, and if anyone’s feeling creative I’ll give an applaud to the first person to post a credible backstory for how the first Oathfoot dwarf earned his title.

It really isn’t your fault at all, sometimes it’s easy to just step back into a character after a gap and sometimes it takes a bit more work. Either way, I’ll keep going with Bryson for the moment until you say otherwise.

Glad to hear that you guys had fun and I’ll get started on another post at some point over the next couple of days.

Am I correct in thinking that you’d like us to just write our own characters in?

Also, Im just working out the last details of Deodatus' background now, I'll aim to message it to you at some point tomorrow. How much detail (if any) would you like on his mortal family and spirit contacts?

“Should we go back John?”

Lisa’s voice cut through the fog of Bryson’s thoughts like a knife.

“You’re right,” he replied, mulling the thought over slightly with a twinge of embarrassment at what seemed an awkwardly farcical over-reaction. “I’ll pull over at the next turning.”

And maybe she was right, this was absurd. He wasn’t thinking, hadn’t been thinking, and through the haze of too many nights’ missed sleep the afternoon’s series of extraordinary, yet mundane, events had taken on an all too ominous bent. A scarcely suppressed voice from the somewhere towards the back of his mind, alarmed by the persistent droning chanting and heavy charge in the air, screamed at him to slam the accelerator down and speed as far out of town as possible but Bryson ignored it. Even if there were some sort of serious crisis underway, a notion which seemed more absurd by the moment as the minister pondered it over, surely he owed a duty to his parishioners to help see them through it? And if not then he’d surely be making even more of a laughing stock of himself, a thought which he was coming increasingly to resent.

Bryson turned the car back into the supermarket parking lot, eager to get a better look at what was going on there, and more than a little inquisitive as to the sudden disappearance of the agitated mob that he’d seen thronging there mere heartbeats before.

I’m working on it as we speak, will have something up shortly.

TBH, I’m finding writing for Bryson a total bitch at the moment… it’s been so long since I last played him that I really can’t get a feel for the character. Would it be alright to write him out at some point soon and start over?

Don’t know if anyone’s interested, but here are a couple of neat links I’ve found to all things Roman:

http://www.roman-empire.net/religion/religion.html

Working on a character concept at the moment. Given the nature of the game, I quite like the idea of a vampire shepherding a family (his mortal descendants) through one age to another.

I’m working on a post at the moment, and will have it up by tomorrow at the latest. Out of interest, do any of Bryson’s parishioners seem to be following him, or is he on his own now?

An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services, when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled: ‘Stop! Acts 2:38!’, (Repent and be Baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.)

The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar: Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.’ ‘Scripture?’ replied the burglar. ‘She said she had an Axe and Two 38s!’

Out of interest, do you have any objection to maintaining a split party?

Bryson’s default reaction is probably just going to be to get the hell out of Dodge… but if this is going to create a lot of extra work for you as GM then please just let me know and I’ll find some reason to bring him back instead.

Definitely still interested in continuing this one whenever you’re able to get everything running again. And welcome to the game, Goti. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly sure I’ve seen you posting here before.

Looks like it could make for an entertaining game. I’ve got both HBO series on DVD… not a bad show, though not exactly historically accurate either.

If it’s alright, I’d quite like to lurk in on this one, though there’s no chance I’ll be able to find the time to play any time soon.

His message imparted, Bryson eyed his assembled congregation somewhat appensively, uncertain as to how they might respond. A solitary bead of perspiration trickled down the back of the minister’s neck, and, as he watched the church empty, he wondered if the choice he had made had indeed been the correct one. Still, what was done was done. Gathering up his notes, Bryson moved the now lukewarm coffee pots off to one side, scooping up the remaining boxes of donuts to dispose of later. No sense leaving them here overnight, they might attract rats.

Outside, a low, incessant droning was calling harshly on the wind, audible even below the electric howling of the police sirens. Bryson locked the church doors behind him, the first time he could recall having done so since he moved here. He had no way of knowing for sure what might be going on out there, but the minister had a strong gut feeling that whatever was going to come a-calling on his church tonight was unlikely to be a penitent in search of prayer, or drunken student looking for a place to sleep their revels off. John jangled the keys pensively in his hand for a heartbeat, weighing the moment over, but stuck to his guns: depositing them snugly back into his jacket pocket.

“John, I’m sorry but can you give me a ride? I walked here.” It was Lisa Neiman.

“No problem, Lisa,” he replied, “just hop in.” In all honesty he didn’t much care for the company, not that it mattered. He needed time alone, to put the situation neatly into place in his own mind before he could think about offering his council to others. Without much thinking about it, Bryson held his passenger door open for her to get inside. He wasn’t coming on to her, John was quite sure of that much, but he’d been raised to be polite and was operating almost on auto-pilot at the moment.

Dropping the uneaten boxes of donuts in the back, the pastor walked back around his car to the driver’s seat. “What the hell do you think is going on?” “I don’t know,” Bryson shrugged, starting the engine. “But I can tell you I don’t much care to be there to find out.” As the car revved to life, the audio continued from the point where he’d left it: an old Johnny Cash CD he must have bought almost ten years ago. John killed it: he didn’t need the distraction at the moment. The police sirens were still going as they turned up the road, shrieking ceaselessly from all direction. Still, no matter how things turned out it seemed unlikely that he’d be lambasted for scare mongering- it looked as though half the town must have reached the same conclusion.

The sedan pulled into the parking lot and, as the pair stepped outside, the wave of surrounding disquiet hit them like a jackhammer. The droning was almost overpowering here, sweeping over the area as though it was alive with an army of insects and, above it, the sounds of breaking glass and screaming voices could be heard from the main supermarket building. A crowd of individuals, maybe four dozen strong- he certainly wasn’t going to take the time to stop and count them- were busy wreaking havoc. If Bryson hadn’t known better he could have sworn that they were the ones making the inhuman droning sound which rose incessantly over the area. The pastor’s breath caught slightly in his throat as he took in the eerie scene, uncertain what to make of it. One thing was sure, however, this certainly wasn’t the time to pick up the groceries he’d intended.

“We should go.” John suggested, turning back to Lisa with a short, curt nod. They’d head on, out of town, before the madness spread. They could decide where to head next on the road. (Assuming they are both able to get back into the car.) As he veered the sedan back towards the parking lot exit, Bryson reached back inside his jacket to hand his cell phone to Lisa. Struggling to maintain a calm and level tone despite the obvious disquiet outside he asked, “Lisa, could you dial 911? Ask them if anything similar’s going on across the valley, and where we should head on to next?

OOC: If Bryson sees anyone get hurt in the parking lot then he might turn back

If anyone’s caught without transport or otherwise in need of help then he’ll offer them a lift. Otherwise, he’s just getting the hell out of Dodge.

Topic: 4th edition FR Information (not for the feint hearted)
Subject: A few thoughts on 4th ed...

1) The overall feel of the game is far more high fantasy. Characters get more spells each level, receive more comic-book style supernatural powers, and the new races introduced are also relatively outlandish. The one that particularly stands out is a draconian style spin-off, now presented as one of the core races, which can breath fire at 1st level.

2) There’s been a continuation of the same sort of power creep we’ve seen over past editions. Characters of the same level can take and deal more damage than they could back in 3.5. None of the races listed in the PHB or DMG have any disadvantages listed, and they all enjoy a bonus of +2 to two attributes, along with one or more unique racial advantages.

3) The game mechanics are far more unified. Attack rolls, saves, and proficiency checks all work on the same mechanic.

4) Healing Surges. As Brianna mentioned, these seem a bit lame. The basic idea seems to be that a character can suffer a sword wound, stop for an action to take a breather, and then keep going as though nothing had happened. Predictably enough, most monsters don’t get to enjoy this advantage, which seems pretty much a one-sided bonus for player characters to use against their enemies.

5) Magic rituals are now far more firmly entrenched in the game mechanics, they even have their own chapter in the PHB. I’m not quite sure how these work in play, but it seems to fit the genre quite nicely.

6) There are now only five alignments: Lawful Good, Good, Evil, Chaotic Evil and Unaligned. Following the suggestions in the PHB this would mean that PCs only have the choice between two alignments, which seems a bit dull. Most of the gods that you’d associate with the former neutral alignments are now listed as “unaligned”.

7) Instead of Feats, characters receive special abilities every few levels in play. These are divided into three tiers, for the levels 1-10, 11-20 and 21-30 and work to funnel characters into particular career paths as they advance in level. These powers can be “at will”, “once per encounter” or “once per day”. Some of these abilities are tied to different character races.

Overall it seems like a fairly decent streamlining of the rules from 3rd edition for dungeon-crawl style games, if you like that kind of thing. There are a few tweaks here and there which made me smile (such as the kobold rogue in the MM which is able to push other kobolds into the way of incoming attacks as a special ability) but a lot of the other changes just seem seriously odd.

It’s a major overall from the 3rd edition rules, and a lot more re-balancing and streamlining has gone on. There isn’t anything much wrong with the rules as such, they’re just not tailored towards the sort of games which interest me. Here’s happy to stick with 2nd edition or the nwod for another five years, or whenever 5th edition comes out.
