Subject: odds & ends

Merideth-

Your average tradesman might make anywhere from 5-10 pieces of gold a day, depending on the trade and depending on the current economy. Peasants make a bit less and a merchant makes a bit more.

Food and drink (bread, cheese, water, ale, veggies, etc.) can all be bought for various amounts of silver, or (sometimes) copper; one gold piece usually buys a small meal, and two or three will get you a nice one. Stay at an inn varies greatly, depending on the inn and quality of the room. A good sword can cost anywhere from 30-50 gold pieces, depending on the make, the maker, the economy, the location, etc. etc. etc.

100 gold is a lot of money; it's an amount that might be sum of someone's entire worth (all the money to their name), but not necessarily a 'life-savings' style quantity. As adventurers, killers, mercenaries (whatever yah wanna call it), you have a good deal more. Someone like Dmitrova has several thousand gold pieces, as would your average noble. The 50 gold pieces that Dmitrova gave you at the beginning would likely be upwards of a couple hundred dollars in our world.

Eol Fefalas-

The Zuun plains are east of Drasnia, far inland (but then, almost everything is east of Drasnia, as its on the west coast). They're between the Sheshir Forest (as men call it - the location of Lyr'Galad, the conquered nation-state of the Wood Elves) and the Kal-Tar mountain range. The Naro river runs through the plains, which themselves extend south until they reach the Braudian plains, which have a somewhat different ecology.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how perfect the Zuun plains would be for the twilight elves. This is because the Zuun Plains are named for the Zuundi, a collection of tribes of men who founded the first nation, Zuundir, on the plains, over two thousand years ago. Now, it is very possible that the twilight elves migrated to the Zuun plains, as the twilight elves are nomadic and the Zuun plains are relatively uninhabited today (most settle near the coast, and climate has changed somewhat from the days of the Zuun), but I would think that they would have orginated from somewhere else.

I have a few ideas though - there are plains northwest of Lyr'Galad and a few hundred miles southeast of Drasnia, which I haven't really named yet. And northeast of Lyr'Galad, before the Naro River hits the sea, there are some plains and flatlands. All of these areas are relatively "wild" as they're aways out from civilization.

I'm not sure. We'll figure it out at some point. Having fun either way though.

I'm assuming you mean a male Centurion that has a crush on Antony? Because if so, that's fine; unfortunately there were no women in the Roman army.

Obviously, making any outward advances might yield consequences, but that's an in game decision and I won't tell prohibit it...

Subject: Contacts

As Cayrisma approached the goblin, the familiar green-painted sign and hustle and bustle outside the inn met her eyes.

The hangout of dock-workers and untitled noblemen alike, the Grinning Goblin was known for its ale, a brew that was named for the tavern itself. Men both common and well to do came to the tavern for the famous blend (famous in Drasnia anyway), and the inn had rooms for anyone from the common man to the travelling adventurer to the wealthy merchant.

It was also, on any given day, crawling with Sea Snakes.

Cay made her way to the back alley so meet with her contact, Ovelia. She knocked.

The door opened, and an Elvin slave opened the door - the mark was branded so obiviously onto her. She was likely owned by the Goblin, a cook or maid or something of the like. She looks both ways down the alley, nervously.

"Can I...help you?" she said. Her hair was a mess, she was wearing rags. Clearly they didn't treat their slaves well at the Goblin...

"Ovelia here?"

"Who's asking?"

"I need to speak with her."

The slavegirl paused, assessing Cay, then simply nodded, shutting the door on her, however. It was only a few minutes when the door opened again, revealing Ovelia, who was looking overworked, underpaid and exhausted.

"Good to see you again Ovelia, so this is the hell hole your currently working?"

"Cay...?" she looked a bit confused. "Listen, Cay, we're a little busy tonight, so if you could make this quick..."

"I’ll make this short and sweet, I don’t want to hold you up. Gracchus Thanald. I know he’s staying here. What do you know about him? And of course as always I’ll make it worth your while…" She smiled at Ovelia and waited for her to respond.

Ovelia smiled back. "Well in that case, Cay..." she replied. "Exactly how worth my while are you going to make it?"

She certainly looked down on her luck. But Ovelia had a certain devious look on her face; she looked determined to take advantage of the situation...

Meanwhile...

As Nyx and Sylla scan the streets near the Grinning Goblin, Nyx sees neither head nor tail of the watcher he's looking for. However, he sees an unwelcome sight - many, many watchers, and none of them the 'young, inexperienced' types that he's used to. In fact, for some reason, Sea Snakes are all over the place.

Any Drasnian worth his salt can spot a Sea Snake - their colors and green and blue, but they don't wear them promenantly. It's usually just a blue trim, a green vest, or something of the like. But the tattoo is a dead giveaway - some wore it proudly on their forearms or biceps, sporting it for all to see. More often, it could be spotted on the back on someone's neck. There were some that had no visible tattoo, but just had the look of Snakes; perhaps they were in a group of them, or wearing the traditional colors.

And Nyx and Sylla could spot literally dozens of people, either coming or going, or just loitering about that night, with the talltale blue snake in the shape of an S inked onto them.

It was an unusually busy night, even considering the usual fare of pub-crawlers and men seeking escorts, but even so, it seemed to be an unusually high proportion of Sea Snakes among the pedestrians loitering about in and around the Grinning Goblin (and the many other taverns all about the Sea Snake turf).

Nyx can't see his man anywhere, and after some watching, he realizes that most of the Snakes in the area see to be the rough and tumble "enforcer" type. Very strange, considering that they're not very deep into the Sea Snake turf, and there's no apparent reason for it. Then again, you never knew the 'schedule' of a gang - the Snakes might be ready for a rumble with the Nightcloaks, they might be receiving a particularly large shipment of smoking weed or the strange roots that grew in the Zuun plains that would make one see things. But the possibility that they knew the Hellkites would be there seemed out of the question - after all, Dmitrova and his boys did not talk. If there was one secure organization in Drasnia, it was the Hellkites.

But regardless of the reason, the situation was clear - there were veteran Sea Snakes everywhere and no newbies to be found.

It was the wrong night for some Hellkites to be reconnoitering about on enemy turf...

Subject: Stuff

Nice, Wyrmsting. I'm impressed so far.

I also read up on some of the resources you have posted in the holding area. The Blue Light Gang is particularly neat - I was thinking that the Braudians needed some kind of smuggling syndicate...

And now for something competely different.

The Braudian Military

The Braudians have championed the strategy of fighting in a phalanx, with well-organized battle lines and marches. Drawing on military techniques from (of all peoples) the elves and strategies of the various human cultures they rule that have developed over the years, the Braudian military has become a well-oiled machine, with legions of soldiers trained in all sorts of disciplines, from brute force to archery; from siege-works to torture. Using these techniques and strategies, the Empire triumphed over all resistance and conquered nearly the entire continent.

Braudians are organized into divisions known as legions. A 'full' legion has 2500 men; it is not uncommon for there to be "half legions" with 1250 men. Most legions, however, have somewhere between 2200-2400. Usually there are about 20-30 legions of active-duty soldiers in the entire Empire (with some legions in reserve), serving under the flag of their local feudal lord, who in turn answers to the Emperor. There are five full legions in Ellisia West, the province of the capital city, the largest number of legions in a single province.

Braudian soldiers are designated by their 'Spear number'; a 1st Spear Legionnaire will begin battle in the front line, the 2nd Spear in the second line, etc. The smallest division of a legion, a phalanx, consists of 50 men, divided into 5 spears of ten men each. A cohort is the next largest division; there are 5 phalanxes to a cohort, and typically 10 cohorts to a legion. A half legion has only 5 cohorts, and some legions that are not quite full will lack one or two cohorts (though there are rarely more than 10).

A full legion is divided into two battalions, consisting of five cohorts each; the 1st battalion hits the battle first, the 2nd is typically a reserve. As you can see, the Braudians really like fives...

Ranks

5th-2nd Spear Legionnaire - This is the equivalent of an enlisted man, and the typical rank and file of the Braudian army.

1st Spear Legionnaire - These are the more elite soldiers; these men hit the front lines first. It typically takes a soldier anywhere from 1-3 years to make 1st Spear, depending on his comptency.

Spear Commander - Equivalent of a sargeant, a Spear Commander is the direct leader of his spear, directing them in combat; the Spear Commander of a 1st Spear outranks the commander of a 2nd Spear, etc.

Phalanx Commander - Obviously, the commander of a phalanx. Typically this position is filled by a commissioned officer, though an enlisted man can work his way up. Equivalent essentially to a LT.

Prefect - The commander of a cohort. It is very rare that an enlisted man make this rank, but it is the highest rank that a man without a commission can make. Prefects are well-respected officers; their wage is lucrative, as well.

2nd Legate - The 2nd Legate commands the 2nd battalion of a legion; he answers directly to the general, but is subordinate to the 1st Legate. The 2nd Legion directly commands the 1st cohort of his battalion as acting Prefect. This position doesn't exist in half legions.

1st Legate - The 1st Legate commands the 1st battalion. He also acts as a sort of second-in-command to the general, and like the 2nd legate directly commands the first cohort of his battalion.

General - The commander of an entire legion.

Imperator - More of a title than a rank, an Imperator controls more than one legion. Sort of like a commander-in-chief, a civilian can be Imperator if appointed, though the position is usually held by a general. In provinces like Drasnia, in which there is only one legion, this essentially makes the Imperator the commanding officer, but the general something of a chief strategist; Imperators are rarely seen drawing battle plans.

Provincial Captain - This is also something of a title; Any man of the rank Prefect or higher may be promoted to Provincial Captain, who is the acting Captain of the Guard for his province. Since police are militarized in Drasnia, the Captain is in charge of city defense (from within or without), enforcement of the law and arbitrating 'police matters'.

In Drasnia...

Erik Tocsani, in Drasnia, is the Provincial Captain, having made 2nd Legate before achieving that status. He has the distinguished position of being both Provincial Captain and Imperator; the general at the camp answers directly to Tocsani - essentially, Tocsani runs the military in Drasnia, whether for law enforcement, defense, or attack (though he himself is answerable to Lord Granwythe).

The Legion stationed in Drasnia is the 19th Legion; since Drasnia is a city-province (there isn't much else in the way of Braudian settlements for many miles), the one legion is more than enough for defense. Typically, the 7th, 8th and some of the 9th cohort deal with law enforcement in the city.

A complicated insignia on a soldier's right breast depicts his rank; the Braudian military has a system that indicates rank and even the number of one's cohort, phalanx and spear based on colors. Usually the only ones who can read them have military experience; however, lots of red usually means a higher rank, and any purple indicates either a general or imperator, depending on how much.

Of note in Drasnia is the employing of soldiers as mercenaries or personal guards; 1st Spear Legionnaires are in demand as bodyguards or 'strong arm men' among wealthy nobles. And as long as the gold is good and under the table, many 1st Spears will take the work whenever they're on leave or on reserve. Even seeing a Spear Commander working for the underground is not unusual (any higher than that is, however, rare).

---

That's all for now. Just thought I'd elaborate on some of that. And yes, I do have the insignia system worked out. I'm not sure how to explain it without pictures, however.

Welcome, Shounin

Update:

No projected start date; I'd like to get at least 1-2 more before we consider beginning.

So far, if I'm not mistaken, we have 3:
Duncan71
Merideth
Shounin

Among those who have already expressed interest, it would be good if you started thinking about whether or not you'd be interested in playing the Centurion.

If we can only get 1 more, I'll probably also portray a Legionnaire. But I'm willing to wait...

By the way, a note on the above rules for finding contacts - to get a DC 5, you must really know the person; i.e. the person should either be written into your background, or you must be able to explain how and how well you know this person. In other words, a DC of 5 on this check should be rare.

Glad to see the interest,

Duncan74 and Merideth are both welcome members to this game, which I hope we'll be able to get off the ground...

Yes, I know that HBO's Rome isn't always historically accurate; however, whenever the show sacrifices historical precision, it is in exchange for plot and character development or to keep things flowing. And in a roleplaying game, these factors are essential. As such, we're going to be drawing on elements of both the real world and Rome's world...

Still looking for about 2-4 more players.

...now the question remained as to what he should do. He was most definately on some sort of database by now, even if they didn't know his name they would surely have some sort of image of his face. Thus the first order of business should be to find someway to disguise himself. Being careful to stick to the sides and avoid any guild security he could see, Lysander searched the streets for somewhere to "buy" some clothing he could use to disguise himself.

As Lysander scans around at the shops along the main street, he stumbles into the bazaars into the center of town...

Merchants had set up shop here, either in little booths or tents.

Guild Security!

False alarm...it was guild security, but it was only two of them going by in a speeder - they didn't enough make a second glance at Lysander, and surely wouldn't have noticed him if they had. Suddenly, Lysander is reminded of how prolific security could be on this planet if the guilds were looking for you - while it was a haven for those that didn't want to be found by a formal government, irritating the guilds here could be problematic.

And then he spotted it - a clothier. She had her wares hung up outside of a little tent, in between a Hoth Dog Vendor and a pair of crooks pandering deathsticks in plain sight. She was sitting there, attentively waiting for customers. The occasional prospective consumer might stop for a moment, taking a look at her clothes, then returning to the throng.

And there...to the right...headscarves...

Four of them, intricately woven and soft, and clearly for females. Two of them were deep purple, one was bright pink, and one had a rose-pattern (it was marked as the most expensive).

((OOC: ))

Meanwhile...

The orange sun of Dathu was beginning to set. It had been a truly eventful day...

As Si-Di and Kavtan spoke and Ninkanna meditated, they were now becoming very aware of the fact that they were to meet with Administrator Namor tonight, and that the time was drawing near. It wasn't clear when exactly he expected them, but it would be soon.

Rhetti Hall was the administrative office in Dom-Rhett; it also served as a sort of 'administrator's mansion' for Cern Namor, and as a historical monument - it was the facility where the first treaties were signed between the two guilds. It was likely that the negotiations would occur there.

The Jedi would know this from basic research on the planet they were visiting; Kavtan would know it because any Dathuan would know it...

From any point of view in Dom-Rhett, they were all treated to a magnificent sunset...

Topic: A Shadow Over Drasnia Q&A
Subject: House Rules...

This is one of those things that's very tricky about rules-based gaming, and I anticipated this aspect of this game in particular, and have been trying to come up with the best way to handle it ever since.

Since knowing people and having contacts has to do with your background, it seems odd to have it randomly assigned or some such; however, it is still something that affects gameplay mechanics, so it can't be handled loosely.

So, here is the rule I'd like to go by:

You will determine where your character might have a friend, contact, old buddy, etc. It might be at "Tavern A", at "Inn B" or "Brothel C"; this is purely up to you and allows the PC to sculpt where his 'contacts' might be. When you arrive, we'll do a Charisma check. This check essentially determines a variety of factors - did this contact know you well enough to even remember you? were you good enough friends for this contact to want to speak with you, or even make himself known? were you charismatic enough to make this contact associate him/herself with you? And the random element of the check will also determine factors such as - is this person even here right now? etc.

DC 5 - Looking for one good friend; good information as to where he/she is
DC 10 - Looking for a casual acquaintance; or perhaps a good friend with unreliable information as to where he/she is
DC 15 - Looking for someone you've met once or twice; might also apply to someone who it is unlikely would want to speak with you, such as a wealthy noble
DC 20 - Looking for someone you've only heard of or someone who would (by all indications) definitely not want to associate with you.

Obviously, this is just a guideline. This might seem similiar to a gather information check, but it's different in a key way - your contact might not have any info at all; you might need him or her for some other reason. This is I'll leave it up to the roleplay to determine which factors come into play.

Ex. 1 Nyx decides to check around at a tavern at the docks for an ancient, rather dark old sailor he knows who also worships Prien. They're casual acquaintances. Nyx has a CHA of 15, rolling against a DC of 10. He rolls a 9, and with his +2 bonus, he succeeds the check. The sailor is there, and willing to speak to Nyx.

Ex. 2 Mallys and Sylla are at a high-roller pub, looking for an untitled noble that they know who might have information for them. Both of them get to roll a check; Sylla has a CHA of 17 and a bonus of +3, Mallys has a CHA of 11, +0. They're rolling against a DC of 15, Mallys rolls a 5. In other words, the noble either isn't there, or doesn't want to be seen with an elf here. Sylla rolls a 13, however, and with her +3 bonus, she succeeds. Somehow, her charms kick in, the noble can't resist at least chatting for a little while.

woooh....said a little more than I expected to. But you get the idea...I figured this would be an important part of game play.

I'll leave it up to you to determine what kind of person you're looking for (race, gender, social status, profession, etc.), but they have to be DM represented.

Subject: There's No Place Like Rome

Dear Fellow Innmates

Since I am not spread thin enough on RDI (only three games, and one more on the way), and find myself without enough to do, I've decided to check interest on one more...

I'd like to run a freeform game set in the Roman Empire. Particularly, I'd like to base the feel and general plotline off of HBO's Rome, but having seen this show or having an extensive knowledge of ancient Rome are not necessary - if you have a serviceable knowledge of Rome and an interest in playing around in a historical RP, that is all that is needed.

We would be RPing as soldiers in Caesar's personal army - the mighty 13th legion. The 13th was a renowned and feared group of fighters that secured a victory for Caesar in Gaul and against in the Roman civil war against the Pompeyans.

Ideally, we would have a small group of legionnaires (about 3-6), and one centurion.

The premise is thus: the year is 52 BC, and the Gallic Wars are coming to an end. Gaius Julius Caesar and Gnaeus Pompey Magnus, who once ruled Rome together as something akin to brothers are now in competition for the love of the people. The conservative senators are scared - Caesar, though an aristocrat himself, has money, power, an army and a love of the people; that's the kind of man that could make himself king. Meanwhile, the war with Gaul has made Caesar ever more wealthy and powerful, and as it draws to a close, the senate fears that he will return and become a dictator.

You are a member of the 13th legion, 10th cohort, and part of a detachment of specialists answerable directly to General Mark Antony. You are to be some of the best and brightest of the legionnaires, and utilized for missions and assignments requiring speed, strength and agility above and beyond what would be expected from the normal legionnaire. This could be anything from theft to assassination to spying to diversionary tactics to you name it. The point is: You're paid to be the best, and you'd better earn your pay.

Please post back if you have any interest in such a game. This would be sort of a lighter side-project - i.e. there's no pre-planned end for it, no strict posting schedule, and no dice, but expected relative quality of posting (no one-liners) and respect of game structure and flow (respect the GM, no god-moding, etc.). Use Star Trek: Operation Persephone as a model for what kind of atmosphere is expected.

Thanks,
-Your Humble Cap'n

Subject: The Hydra's Breath

The serving wench returned with the drinks ordered, placing them all before their respective owners. She shot a dirty look at Cay when she saw the dagger driven into the table, but quickly let it go - there was something obviously dangerous about this group.

"From Avenon," she said as she served the wine to Nyx, "From the vineyards at Sethbrook, literally on the other side of the continent...you'll not get any better in this part of the world..."

She bowed slightly and took her leave. Meanwhile, through the windows, the group could see the rays of the sun slipping behind the clouds; Drasnia had the luxury of warm-water currents keeping the inlet waters from freezing, and it was still in autumn. But still, they were in the north, and it was fact that one would be reminded of every so often in Drasnia - when it was winter, the winters were long. And the days were always shorter than elsewhere.

It would be twilight within the hour, and more and more patrons were starting to fill the Hydra's Breath tavern, either coming in at the end of their workday at the docks or just lesser nobles and adventurers from out of town coming in to find comfort in the arms of a stranger.

(OOC: Advancing time a bit; the group can sleep on it, scout out the Grinning Goblin tonight, or some other course of action. Just know that it will be dark soon.)

Meanwhile...

A few miles Northeast of Drasnia,
The Eduar Foothills

The wooded foothills of Eduar were an excellent cover; even from the highest tower of Drasnia, a camp would be well-hidden from even the keenest sentry. The hills were just alongside the Reyal River, where the road ran inland, towards many of the northern colonies. As such, they had, in the past, been the hideout for many bandit gangs as they waited for passing caravans.

Imperial persistence and zealotry had quickly put an end to that, however. If there was one thing the Empire was good at, it was making 'examples' out of those who defied it.

At this particular moment, however, the ones who made camp in the Eduar hills were not bandits.

They were elves.

There were six, wrapped in cloaks, and gathered around a modest fire. Hoods drawn, a passerby would not have taken them for elves. Their bows and swords were strewn about in the camp, and spartan tents erected all around the campfire. The cover from the surrounding hills and foliage was more than adequate to hide the half dozen rangers, but elves were particularly keen at being hidden in the wilderness.

"Are we doing the right thing, Tanael?" one asked

"There is no time to be principled," another replied. "We must do what is necessary..."

"And that means that we do not concern ourselves with what is right?"

"Tanael, there is no room for doubt in our undertaking," another voice spoke. His voice was authoritative, final. It was a rich, baritone; strange for an elf. As he looked up from tending the fire, his face could be seen under his cloak, revealing - a beard? He was not an elf at all, but a half-elf. "If you wish to back out, do so now."

"No..." the elf called Tanael replied. "No, Paliir. I will see this through."

"You may think this to be vengeance," Paliir continued, "But I have learned that justice and vengeance are sometimes the same. You know what the humans did to my brother, Jhahir. I cannot abide that, Tanael."

The other elves were silenced by the mention of the name, 'Jhahir'; that name must have carried some weight.

Suddenly, one of the group looked up; the sound of hootbeats was in the distance. He looked about at the other five - the looks on their faces were not looks of surprise, or fear, but of expectation.

They all rose, and walked over to the edge of the hill, peering over and watching the riders that were approaching. They were not of a merchant caravan, but instead bore the insignia of the Empire. There were only three, and they rode directly for the six elves.

As the three drew near, the elves, strangely revealed themselves, coming out to great the three humans who rode towards them. The horses slowed to a hault, and the lead human dismounted, withdrawing his hood to reveal a man with (what the Drasnians called) a 'pink' face and dirty-blonde hair; obviously a lower-caste, not of pure Braudian blood. He was of medium height and build, but as he approached the six elves, he approched them with the confidence of a man in power.

"Hail," he said, raising his left hand in a typical greeting. It bore a deliberate cut across the palm, no older than a few days...

"Hail," the leader, Paliir, replied, and the two approached each other. Paliir reached out to shake the human's hand, but the human didn't even bother to acknowledge the gesture.

"You're right on time, elf."

"You're an hour late, human."

"Watch your tongue," the human said, something dangerous in his voice. He reached into one of his saddlebags, withdrawing a bundle of documents and a small, velvet pouch. He tossed both of them to the half-elf. "That should be everything you need. If all goes well, you will find yourself in good standing with us very soon."

The human turned to go.

"Remember this, human," the half-elf spat, "We work with you only to further our own goals. Today, you are our ally. Tomorrow...who knows?"

The human mounted his horse, without saying a word. Grabbing the reins, he smirked.

"Just do your job, half-blood," he said, nothing but disgust in his voice. "If you double-cross me, or fail...well, let's just say that the last elf to do so didn't die well."

With that, he let out a "Yah!", and the three horsemen turned and headed back inland towards Drasnia.

The six stood, watching them go, their cloaks billowing in the wind.

As I said before, time has been advanced only slightly.

And I threw in a little interlude, just to be fun. And for suspense...

If I recall correctly, the name of the Rebel station on Hoth was Echo Base.

Question:

What is the name of the man who offers Obi-Wan Kenobi death sticks in the cantina on Coruscant?
