I used to just sort of pick out random ones from the inn's selection back before the Great Crash, but after I ended my hiatus and resumed posting here at the inn, I submitted my current one - Quinlan Vos, who is the best expanded universe character in Star Wars (in my humble opinion).

It seems that most people have screen names that are of one of their trademark characters, and avatars that are of that same character. Oddly enough, I don't know the name Cap'n Lou. It was actually the name of my Baldur's Gate character at the time when I signed up for the inn originally, but that guy didn't last very long. I wanted to change the name for awhile, and considered it when I got back but, hey...everyone knows me by this name.

Also oddly enough, in recent weeks I've actually come full circle and kind of like it...

But yeah, that would be great, no rush though.

Well, I hope you don't abandon 2e & 3e because of the failings of 4e & beyond, Brom. They're both good systems.

I'm inclined to agree with most everyone here - these rules changes seem no less than ridiculous.

WoTC are a bunch of fools, admittedly. As a former avid Magic player, every set or so, they do something that makes old players of the game drop out. Because, unlike in D&D, you opting to not allow a certain set in Magic, even in casual play, is next to impossible. And in sanctioned play, such a thing is unheard of. I recently started playing again a year or so ago, and the game has become so overpowered it's ridiculous. They're printing munchkin cards left and right, making most former sets virtually unplayable and the game ruled by newbies. Needless to say, while I started playing again about a year ago, I stopped playing again shortly thereafter.

Sorry to go off on an un-D&D topic, but yeah...WoTC are idiots.

Subject: Kato 3

Stardate: 2374.09.02
The Charon – 14:01 hours

Lt. Commander Kato 3 sat in his quarters on the Charon.

He was still getting used to them - he had hardly unpacked what few belongings he had brought from Eminiar 7, but he was used to life on the move. His years in the Eminian Spacefleet and year as an exchange officer in Starfleet had taught him to adapt to a minimalist lifestyle. Presently he was lying on the bunk, sitting against the headboard at a ninety degree angle, reading The Life and Times of Anan 7.

"Chapter 5 - Renewed Conflict (2268-2272)

Following the events of the Computer War, Anan 7, with the aid of the Federation, negotiated a brief and relatively unstable peace with Vindikar. Resentment of the Federation for their interference was rampant, and the population at large was busy adapting to the change to peacetime. As such, the Council was primarily focused on dealing with the needs of their own people, rather than on fostering peace with Vindikar. Ultimately, the peace never manifested as more than a temporary detente, and because the war resumed with actual weapons, Anan 7 has become one of the most controversial figures in Eminian history. Indeed, some regard him as one of the heroes of Eminiar, ultmiately bringing peace to the system, but many still refer to him disparagingly as 'The Disintegrator', a title that-..."

"Lt. Commander Kato 3,"

Kato's concentration was broken by a message for him from communications. He tapped his combadge, finally used to the motion after a year of service in Starfleet.

"Yes?"

"There's a subspace transmission from Eminiar 7, from a Mr. Tarik 1."

"Patch it through to my quarters, please."

Kato got up and walked over to the viewscreen, tapping the button to turn it on. The image materialized on the screen - his brother, Tarik 1, was sitting in the council chambers on Eminiar 7, but none of the other councilmen were there. The familiar symbols and regalia of the Eminian Union decked the walls.

"Kato," his brother said, a sort of melancholy smile on his lips.

"Tarik," Kato said, a bit confused. "Is this is an official communique, or a personal one?"

"Both," Tarik replied. "...and neither. The council wanted to make contact with you one last time. But I requested that I speak to you, alone."

Kato smiled and nodded.

"What is it, Tarik?"

"There's a war going on, Kato," Tarik began. "A war that the Eminian Union is seriously considering entering. All of the intelligence we've received on the Dominion and all of the encounters our fleet has had with them, however small, have led to believe that they area serious threat. But only the Federatio has engaged them, and you are one of only six other officers who are on exchange with the Federation as of now; none of the others have renewed their applications."

Tarik sighed, rubbing his forehead. "I know the days of the Computer War are done...and I know some decisions were made in those days that...not everyone agrees with. But...in those days, our honor...our devotion to duty...was never in question. It didn't matter if you agreed with it or not - you died for your duty to your homeworld."

Kato knew exactly what Tarik was speaking of, and he wasn't sure how he felt about it himself. Out of duty, millions of Eminians had marched fearlessly into disintegration chambers. And while it may have been terrible in one sense, in a way, what Tarik was saying made sense. Eminians knew their duty, and they followed it.

"What I'm trying to say, Kato," he said, "Is that I'm proud of you. You have no compunction about doing your duty and fulfilling your oath - to Eminiar 7, the one you made to Starfleet, and to the galaxy. That kind of honor is rare these days. I don't know what kind of mission you're going on, but from what Starfleet had told us, I get the feeling it's dangerous. And no matter what happens, you'll have done your duty."

Kato simply smiled, wiping a tear from his eye. "Thank you, brother."

"Good luck, Kato."

His brother terminated the communication on his end. Kato sat pensively for a moment. He hadn't thought of the situation that way - despite the small amount of time he'd spent in Starfleet, he'd heard the rumors about the Charon being a deathtrap. But, to him, taking the assignment was just one more duty to fulfill.

He set the biography down, stood up, and stretched, all the while reflecting on the briefing in the ready room. The council on Eminiar 7 didn't know the half of what his mission would be, or what kind of danger he'd be getting into. And it was possible, perhaps even probable, that he could die.

No matter, he thought, heading towards the door. Time to see what kind of science facilities this vessel has exactly...

Subject: Moving along...

As Si-Di inspected the wreckage on her way to see Kavtan, she finds what he found; rubble, and what she sensed might be a few pieces of flesh here and there - it was a truly sickening sight. Through the force, she can feel the essence of Master Allum here, like a footprint. When he died, he was at peace. He had sensed the bomb and knew what was coming.

She remembers what Master Allum told her one day, when they were training on Coruscant, in one of the rooms of the Jedi temple, sequestered away from the rest of the academy...

They had been meditating for hours. For the padawan, it was uncomfortable; her joints began to tense up after sitting in the same position for such a long time. But Master Allum was at peace. He always seemed to be at piece. The long, silvery-white hair of the ancient Jedi Zabrak fell so neatly on his shoulders, and in the rays of the sun drifting in from outside, his horns glimmered like polished bone.

"Steady your mind, padawan," he said. "The force flows through us. Through our mind, our heart, and our spirit. We are luminous beings, not simply this crude matter."

He gestured around them, at all of the objects and material things.

"Let go of all this," he said. "A Jedi uses the force for knowledge, and defense. But a Jedi does this not actively, but passively. One does not try in the traditional sense. Let go, and let the force flow through you. When a Jedi learns how to open their mind, their heart, their spirit to the force, the force will do the work.

"Above all, be at peace," he concluded. "You must let what must happen, happen. For it is the will of the force. If I die to save the life of but one other being, no matter his or her lot in life, my life will have been well spent."

Master Zen Allum had died trying to keep the other passengers from harm. As Si-Di reflects on this, looking among the wreckage, she sees something green shimmer.

Upon closer inspection, it is an Adegan Crystal, from Master Allum's lightsaber, no doubt. There is no sign of the saber itself - it must have been destroyed in the blast. But lightsaber crystals are forged and shaped in special furnaces, and molded with the force. It would take a powerful explosive to pulverize such a dense, strong crystal; this explosive, apparently, was not strong enough. Si-Di may wonder why she spotted something that Kavtan missed; then again, Adegan Crystals radiate the force, albeit subtly. And Kavtan was not looking for a crystal...

It must have been the will of the force.

In any case, there wasn't enough of Master Allum to even transport, but then again, Jedi do burn their dead usually when off-world, so it might be a moot point...

Meanwhile...

As Ninkanna checks her comlink once more, she still finds it dead on the other side - she doesn't even seem to be getting a frequency...

Master Arkana did say she would meet them at Rhetti Hall when they met with Administrator Namor, however. But Master Arkana is not one to neglect contact in such a way.

As she walks over to the Starfighters, she finds the Astro droids exactly as they left them - shut down, in the docking ports. However, it is doubtful that the droids could be able to affect any change in the situation - perhaps if Master Arkana was near her Starfighter, Ninkanna could contact her with the other one. But it doesn't seem as if Master Arkana is out of range, just that she is either not answering, has turned off her comlink, or the comlink has been destroyed.

The thought is chilling, but considering the events that have been occurring of late, and the one that they were pursuing...

It seems to be a possibility. However, she has not sensed anything unusual in the force. Admittedly, Anna is just a padawan, but as many masters and apprentices have noted, the bond between a master and his or her padawan is strong. If something befell Master Arkana, Ninkanna would probably know it...

Kavtan, meanwhile, can't help but notice that the two Jedi are back together on the landing pad, albeit engaged in different activities. And the stranger - 'Rok' was his name? - seems to have disappeared entirely, along with both of the guild personell. But then, Dom-Rhett could be a sketchy place; Kavtan knew that growing up there.

People disappeared - they went along on their way, got mixed up in bad business, or simply went off world. On a planet where there's no formal government, people tend to do as they please.

That made Dathu a perfect world for a lot of things. Violence, larsony, conspiracy...

Topic: Help Lou Design a Campaign Setting!
Subject: Some notes on the elves...

Eol, to work in collaboration with the Elvin subraces you're designing, here's some of the notes I have on the elves so far in this setting that might relate to some of the work you're doing...

As usual, these are my ideas; and they're just that: ideas. I want to work with you and your ideas to create something collaborative.

Physical Traits:

As stated before, the Elves here aren't as long lived as elsewhere - I would think that specific lifespan would vary according to subrace, but I wouldn't think that the most long-lived among these subraces would live much longer than 300 years or so; the shortest lived would probably only live to be about twice the lifespan of an average human (approx. 140-150 years).

Additionally, I would think that the Elvin subraces would be as different as human peoples are from each other. I'm open to exceptions on this. However, for example, I would think that the main difference between, say Wood Elves and High Elves would be that the Wood Elves embrace the wilderness, avoid large cities and establishments, and tend towards druidism, while the High Elves dabble in magic, build civilizations and have more thorough laws. In other words, these are cultural and lifestyle differences that may have led to minute differences in general build, lifespan and abilities, but not enough to constitute a separate species altogether.

History:

Elvin civilizations in this setting are not ancient in the same sense as the humans, dwarves and other "PC" races. I'm tending towards the notion that "High Elves" and Elvin nations did not arise until a good millenia or two after the first human nations. This does not mean that elves did not have a culture, but rather that they tended towards nomadic, simple lifestyles and preserved their culture through oral tradition. As such, Elvin artifacts from these periods would be rarer, and Elves would be regarded as more mysterious, especially by early man, who would have few dealings with them.

Even when conquered by the Braudians, the Elves were not fully under their control. While vastly enslaved or conscripted, it would be next to impossible for the Empire to patrol every corner of the continent. They might, for example, have a colony in an Elvin wood and have their leaders under arrest in order to keep the local slaves in line. However, patrolling and policing the entire forest would be nigh on impossible. For this reason, many provinces are controlled by the Empire in name only, and are still 'wild'.

Cultures:

Both before and after the time of the Empire, most of the elves eventually split into two ideological groups - Wood Elves and High Elves. While not all elves might live in the woods or in a city, the terms have come to apply to almost all of Elvinkind. The term Wood Elf loosely refers to an elf who prefers to remain either nomadic, or in touch with nature. While these elves might live in communities, they don't build cities at the expense of the natural world around them. Magic is scarcely used by them, and hunter/gatherer societies are common among them - small agricultural communities might remain. Meanwhile, the High Elves embrace the project of nation-building, magic, technology, etc. This isn't to say that they are "out of touch" with nature; however, they have determined that to live in a world with other races, especially humans, it helps to have an entity including a government and an army.

As stated before, some don't fit into the strict model of Wood Elf or High Elf, but still would be on one side or the other of this ideological divide. The Mith'Ganni, for example, would be on the "Wood Elf" side, despite the fact that they don't live in the woods.

Language:

This brings us to language - since the terms wood elf and high elf don't universally apply, I have come up with some Elvish terms to describe these two types of elves.

Teh'Shiri - "High" Elves, i.e. Elves of the cities, nation, etc.
Sheh'Shiri - "Wood" Elves, i.e. hunter/gatherer, nomadic, or druidic elves

I imagine that the Elvish language would be 'flowing', so I'm staying away from harsh sounds. Since Mith'Ganni, is, I'm assuming, Tek's word, I think we should come up with something different for the campaign setting - I don't think we should change it for the Drasnia Campaign itself, however, as the term has already been used. (Your thoughts on this?)

Nations:

Historically, the first Elvin nation was Sheh'Shier, in the forest of that same name. A union of Elvin communities and hunter/gatherer societies, it was founded as a formal entity in order to create a safehaven for Elves, so that they would have their own state, and make them a nation that could engage in trade and defend itself.

Sometime later, a brief civil war was fought amongst the Elves (the details of which I will elaborate on later), resulting in the forest being divided into two nations - Teh'Shier and Sheh'Shier. Later, the Teh'Shiri elves would migrate north, and found a nation along one of the great rivers running through the continent, and near the northern coast. Sheh'Shier would then be renamed Lyr'Galad.

The next major conflict would be the Braudian campaigns, which would result in both of these nations being conquered. In the time after the Empire, a Elvin new nation, Min'Shar, would be founded near the south.

I'm pretty sure that these three would be the main 'nation-states' of the Elves as of the 'current year', which I'd imagine would be somewhere around 1350.

---

And, on another note, I'm going to post up a rough timeline in due course, maybe in the next week or so as I flesh out some of these ideas.

Also, I'd love to see any maps of Drasnia, Eol. The descriptions I gave were really the only parameters - I'm not very good at map making when it comes to cities, so I'd be thrilled to see some things fleshed out a bit...

Subject: An Idea for Webdesign At the Inn

Hey all,

I have an idea for all those involved in webdesign here at the inn. I'd like to see what both you, the moderators and what the other commoners like meself think of the idea.

On many an occasion, I've found myself clicking from one section of the forums to another in order to find updates on the games that I'm playing in or DMing.

The inn has a great feature, in that on your profile, it lists the games you GM and play in. I was thinking that it would be convenient if, on this list, it showed whether or not any of those games have been updated since you last viewed the thread; ideally, it would show if any of the related threads had been updated as well. This way, when you click on your profile, you can check on any updates in any of your games, then go on to browsing the forums.

I'm not sure how technically feasible this is, what the logistics would be, etc.; however, I'm wondering what other people would think of such an addition and if our webmaster might consider including something like it if it were feasible.

The inn has already taken leaps in revolutionizing online gaming...just bouncing around ideas, I think there's always room for improvement.

Subject: The Shoot The Jedi Trick

"THERE'S THE OTHER ONE!"

"Wuh?" one of the security guards blurts out, turning to look just as Lysander points at 'something' behind him. As he turns to look, his companions do so also, and Susska hesitantly takes her eyes off of the Jedi, the Arcona and the conman, just to be sure. As they all look, they see of course, nothing behind them.

But it's too, late, as 'Rok's legendary 'Shoot The Jedi Trick' is already in action.

Si-Di leaned slightly towards the two guards there and braced herself for the blast she knew was coming. Her intention was that she would throw up her arms and leap slightly forward just as the stun bolt hit her; her aim was to cause her long body to crash into the two guards right in front of her and to take them down with her. Even if the stun bolt didn’t render her completely unconscious she would let the weight of her nearly 2 meter frame drag the two guards down to the floor.

Finally, the blast went off and Si-Di felt the impact of the blaster on stun ripple through her as she flew forward. Just as the security forces were turning back to Si-Di and Lysander, the Jedi was already tumbling forwards at them, and barrelled into the two guards, knocking them off of their feet. Lysander dove for the quickest exit available to him - the hole in the wall.

There was confusion, shouting and screams in the cantina. Klebb was yelling at the top of his lungs about something, and people were hurring out of the cantina as fast as possible. In the crowd, various voices and shouts can be heard...

"What happened?"

"That guy shot a Jedi!"

"What in Bogden is going on?"

As 'Rok' dives for the exit, Susska draws a blaster pistol and takes aim at the escapee. She fires once, but the blaster bolt barely misses Lysander, grazing the side of the wall. However, it takes a chunk out of the cantina; she has set her blaster on lethal. She turns to the two guards standing near the door.

"Follow him, you idiotsss!"

The two guards nod and make haste out the door, but Lysander has a decent head start on them.

"Get up...Get up!" she shouts, lifting Si-Di's limp form from the two henchmen under her command, then dropping her next to the wall. She then pulls the men to their feet, snarling all the while. "You idiotsss. You have gunsss on him and he shoots a Jedi right in front of you! And throwss her into you. What am I paying you for?!"

Susska shakes her head, then glances towards the stunned Jedi leaning against the wall.

"Then again..." Susska says, a pensive look on her reptillian face. Her suddenly face contorts into a toothy grin. "You two, take the prisssoner."

The two henchmen nod and approach the captured Arcona, who is still in a relative daze. They lift him up by each arm and begin to drag him out of the cantina. Susska walks over to Si-Di, who is still almost completely stunned by the blast. She kneels down next to her helpless form, smiling.

"Sssorry, Jedi," she says, though her voice is not at all apologetic. "The prisssoner is mine."

She pats Si-Di on the shoulder, then rises. With haste, she and the other two guards make their way out of the cantina, though Si-Di can't tell where they're heading since...well, she can't turn her head.

---

Meanwhile, Lysander has made it onto the main street running through Dom-Rhett spaceport, and the two guards are in hot pursuit, but still on the landing pad as of now. However, after about half a minute of running, Lysander cannot hear footsteps behind him. A quick glance behind reveals - no one?

The bright red and gold of Guild security usually stands out like a sore thumb in the dull beiges and browns worn by the miners and other inhabitants of Dom-Rhett. But the Guild security men were nowhere in sight. And the Guild didn't exactly have a reputation for employing henchmen with a knack for sneaking about or hiding themselves.

In the throng of pedestrians and motorists about the main street running through Dom-Rhett, Lysander Orda is lost to his pursuers.

---

On the landing pad, in her starfighter Ninkanna attempts to let the Force heal her, the waves of that ancient energy field washing over her...

There they are. The waves of the Force, flowing all through the space that is and isn't there, from and to beyond eternity. Ninkanna pushes into the mist, forming another wave to form, but this one contained within the midst of her body. She concentrates, making it resonate with a frequency that can only be described as an essense of growth and comfort. With the fullness of the standing wave Ninkanna's body responds, fatigue and weariness draining from her body as strength flows from the origin of the wave. Ninkanna opens her eyes, feeling better.

However, as she opens her eyes, what she sees is Guild security, marching off the landing pad, to a waiting speeder. Dragging a stunned Arcona in tow, they throw him into the back of the speeder, which is marked "Mining Guild Security". They start the speeder up, and in no time at all, they've disappeared behind one of many of the steel buildings lining the main street of Dom-Rhett...

((OOC: Here's the rundown. Lysander succeeded in his bluff check (of course!), and then shot the Jedi. Since Si-Di is willingly being stunned, I didn't roll for a save; she has been stunned for 2 rounds. The guards failed to evade Si-Di tumbling onto them, and Lysander made an expert escape - Susska made an attack on him, but missed. Meanwhile, one element of the shoot the jedi trick that may have been overlooked - Si-Di is now stunned, and Susska has taken the prisoner.

Ninkanna has healed herself by 7 Vitality points.

I'm assuming that Kavtan is still resting up. ))

Topic: Help Lou Design a Campaign Setting!
Subject: Slavery

During the time of the Empire, slavery flourished.

I would liken the slavery of this time to the slavery of ancient Rome - it is a commonplace thing. Few in the Empire even stop to think of the 'moral importance' of slavery - it is just an everyday thing. In addition, there are many types of slaves - house slaves, body slaves, and slaves that are put to work in labor camps.

Slaves would also be of many different backgrounds. Elves would make up a large quantity of the slaves, but thieves, murderers and other human criminals who have been sentenced to slavery would also make up the slave populace. I'd imagine that there would be quite a few orcs, goblins, ogres, giants, (etc., etc., basically every monster race you can think of) in labor camps or conscripted into the Imperial Army. Halfling, Dwarven and Gnomish slaves are rarer, but not non-existent. I can't remember how much history I posted up, but this is because after 'making an example' of the halflings in a great massacre, then conducting brutal sieges on the dwarven fortresses, most of the 'little folk' surrendered without a fight; one of the terms of this was to protect their women and children from slavery.

I like your idea of a slave mark - I would imagine that this would apply to a certain kind of slave, however. Perhaps a lowly labor slave. I doubt that a noble would want his house slaves marred on their face, though I'm sure it would vary from noble to noble.

Additionally, as long as you're a citizen, you can own slaves. Therefore, many merchants, shopkeeps and tavern owners probably have a small number of slaves on hand.

And, like in ancient Rome, I'd imagine that slavery (especially the flooding of Elvin slaves on the market following the great war) has probably created some problems on the workforce - the Romans had many problems with plebeians being put out of work by slaves. Caesar gained great face with the people when he passed laws requiring certain percentages of the labor force to be freedman or citizens, which is one of the reasons why he was so popular. However, the Braudians have not had a 'Caesar' - their rulers are avaricious to the core, and have profited greatly from the cheap labor force they've gained, at great cost to the common man.

---

So those are my general ideas on the subject. I welcome anything you have to offer - any ideas, anything. Everything in this world is still in development. As you can see, I've kind of imagined the Braudians to be a mix between the Roman Empire and your standard medeival kingdom. They're more medeival in feel, but their laws and outlook on the world is pretty Roman - "we're the superior, divine race destined to conquer the world". Anyway, post up some of your ideas, I'd like to hear 'em.

YeOlde! We've found the culprit that is holding up the briefing.

Eol is Lt. Cmdr. Jones! Hurry up and post!

And then post in ASoD when you're done with that...

Elvin sub-races - sounds cool.

This Mith'Ganni race has proven to be pretty interesting so far - perhaps we could find a way to work them in. My only concern would be infringing on the intellectual property of Tek.

I'm working on a timeline for this world (and have been for the past week or so); and I have a general idea of the outline of a few historical events.

As stated before - this place is going to have a LOT of history. This is not only because I find that interesting, but also because I think it would be cool to have the ruins of long-dead cities at various places in the world, each of them with distinctive histories.

It makes for a lot of interesting quests, and some neat dungeons...

In truth, the idea of the Braudians and their Empire was fairly new, but I've taken pieces from various campaigns/adventures that took place in custom settings or settings that were not entirely fleshed out that I've done and I'm trying to integrate them into a single picture.

More later, and a map soon.

Subject: Hydra's Breath

As the group exited Dmitrova’s lounge and entered the Hydra’s Breath proper, they were met with the hustle and bustle of the tavern once more; shouts and arguments, smoking pipes and spilled ales were everywhere. The same half-elf that was getting his head beaten in by some off-duty Imperials was now sulking in the corner. The Imperials had gone – had their fun, it seemed – and left him with two black eyes and a bleeding face. One of the serving wenches had tossed him a steak and he was holding it to his head, blood oozing down his face.

Cay approached the bar, off-handedly tossing a coin towards him and demanding ale.

“…And don’t you water it down this time, I’ve got the money right here.”

Ruun grumbled, slamming down a full mug of ale on the bar in front of her. As she turned to leave, he held the coin up to the light, then bit into it. It was real, no doubt. Ruun shrugged and returned to cleaning mugs, but was soon called over by a rowdy group of merchants demanding libations.

Meanwhile, Nyx had called over a serving wench, and she nodded – she moved towards the table after having finished serving up ales to a table of dwarves. As she walked towards the group, she received a pinch on the behind by a passing human patron.

“Hey!” she shouted, and without even hesitating, she grabbed a half-full mug of ale out of the hands of one of the patrons at a table near her and hurled it full-speed at the back of the man’s head. He let out an “oof” as the heavy mug struck him and he tumbled forward, ale spilling all over him. Ruun merely shook his head and shrugged; the wench then spun on her heel and returned to serving Nyx and the rest of the party (the man whose ale she had grabbed was probably too drunk to notice).

“Hello, there,” she began, “And welcome to the Hydra’s Breath. The kitchen is making a fine soup and there’s always mutton. Now…can I interest you in some food…or some drink?”

The Hydra’s Breath was a jovial place, to be sure…most of those who frequented it were proud of their debauchery. They rolled around in their filth like pigs; and like pigs, they grew fat, and wouldn’t shy away from eating one of their own.

Topic: Help Lou Design a Campaign Setting!
Subject: Some info on various races...

This is some of the ideas I've come up with about the main PC races in this setting; this is by no means set in stone, but merely the ideas I have so far. It's been really cool, by the way, reading the ideas put forth by everyone - the wheels are turning in my head. Thanks for the interest and posting, everyone.

without further adieu...

Humans – Men are one of the versatile races, and as such have progressed much and accrued much wealth and land in the course of history. While in ancient times humans often shared their settlements with dwarves, elves and other such demi-humans, when humans began their investment in empire-building, such races were seen as a hindrance. As such, a racist philosophy of human superiority developed – one which did not wane until the fall of the Braudian Empire.

Humans can be compassionate and humble, or arrogant and violent to the extreme. Their relations with other races, as such, as strained, and old wounds still remain from the days of human oppression. As such, opinions of them are mixed – they are considered formidable allies (or opponents, depending on whose side you’re on), regardless. And because of their penchant for technological progress, nation-building and expansion, humans dominate as far as influence on the continent goes.

Dwarves – A fierce warrior-race, the dwarves are a cross between the Spartans, the Vikings and the Ferengi from Star Trek (). The dwarves have a proud culture and have many clans; what clan you belong to is important to a dwarf. The dwarves have few nations; most are unions of various clans or their mountain city-states. Dwarves have an honor-code, but they are still brutal warriors and can be obsessed with their material goods and wealth.

The honor-code of the dwarves is subject to interpretation, and often varies from clan to clan. Some view it as dishonorable to lose a battle, some believe the most honorable course of action is to fight even when the fight seems impossible. Some believe that war is a sacred undertaking and must be waged very carefully; others think that the slightest insult is grounds for a long, bloody conflict. As such, the dwarves have interacted in seemingly conflicting ways with other races throughout history. When the Braudians sought to conquer the dwarves, they began by attacking the most populous dwarven city-states. The valiant dwarves fought on, but the Braudians enacted the “ram has touched the wall” policy (i.e. – once the battering ram has touched the wall, no quarter is given to those inside the fortress; this is to discourage defenders from trying to hold out as long as they can in a siege, because of the knowledge that their women and children will be killed). As such, many other dwarven states joined the Empire willingly – some claimed it was honorable, as they avoided defeat by doing so. Others claimed that they wanted to join the Empire and that their decision had nothing to do with fear of death, a claim that many said was simply to save face. In the modern age, many dwarves see the defeat of the dwarves and submission to the Braudians as a ‘black spot’ on the normally proud history of dwarven honor; while many dwarves profited from the Empire, most saw the act of joining the Braudians as a cop out.

Dwarves can interbreed with humans, gnomes and halflings.

Elves – The inhabitants of woodlands everywhere; elves. Elves, for the most part, shy away from large cities and civilizations. As in most campaign settings, it’s worth designating a difference between “high elves” and “wood elves”; the former, while they do not embrace expansionism, do not so conservatively hold on to the idea that true elves must live a Spartan life in the forests. Elves are usually described as having the oldest civilizations in the world – in this setting however, they were one of the last races to begin nation-building, mostly doing so for the purposes of defense and trade. Still, most elves are nomadic or druidic peoples with a strong connection to nature.

Elves are divided in their relations with humans – some are distrustful, others believe that the past should stay in the past. A minority are hateful and antagonistic towards them. Elves are territorial: they range from being fiercely territorial and xenophobic to being simply generally protective of their lands.

Elves are not immortal, and do not live terribly long – their lifespans range from twice as long as that of a human to about three times as long.

Gnomes – The gnomes are the close cousins of the dwarves; they are more reclusive, more concerned with technology and wealth, and less war-like. They often address dwarves as ‘brother’ or ‘cousin’, and their languages could be considered dialects of the same tongue. Often, in any given dwarven settlement, one might find one gnome for every ten dwarves; the reverse is true in gnomish settlements. Gnomes are excellent crafters, and often work with dwarves in the forging of their mighty weapons.

Gnomes are usually hoarders – they profited greatly in the Braudian Empire, and joined it without a fight. Gnomes also made contact with modern-humans very early on, and have been trading with them for thousands of years. As such, the relationship between humans and Gnomes is very cordial.

Halflings – The halflings are often the ‘innocent bystanders’ of the world. They’re peaceable as can be and very hospitable to all-comers. They have no ill-will towards men (most of them), despite the many atrocities committed in the past. As such, they often find themselves invaded, massacred, or made an example of. Halflings can be pacifistic, but most are simply ‘libertarian’ in their outlook on the world: live and let live. Sometimes, halflings find themselves organized into militias in order to fight for a particularly important cause, though this is somewhat rare.

Halflings are perhaps the most utopian of societies and races in this campaign setting (despite what you’re going to see in Drasnia, not everything in this world is dark and brutal…)

More later…
