Subject: Penalties

SD do you give any penalties for point blank shooting?

If you don't I'm keeping with the bow and shooting at the orcs closest to the wagon, if you do, then I'm going to cast sleep on the party of 4 orcs that are about to charge, and then draw my longsword.

T'Sal, you should be able to whack down on the orc from inside the cart. Since you are higher, you may even get a to hit bonus for having higher ground (if SD uses those rules).

Most orcs are 1 HD, so I wouldn't waste the spell. Save it for when big daddy in the armor comes down to play, it may just save us.

Subject: Damage is Weapon Dependent

Notice there is some confusion with the new D&D players as to what dice should be rolled for damage. S/M means small/medium and L means large (these refer to the size of the oppoent).

S=I believe encompasses halflings and lower
M=Roughly human size up to about 7 feet
L=Here are your ogres and bigger baddies

Sling--determined by ammo
*Sling Bullet--1d4+1 vs S/M and 1d6+1 vs L
*Sling Stone--1d4 vs S/M and 1d4 vs L

Heavy Crossbow Quarrel--1d4+1 vs S/M and 1d6+1 vs L

Battle Axe--1d8 vs S/M and 1d8 vs L

Dagger--1d4 vs S/M and 1d3 vs L

Quarterstaff--1d6 vs S/M and 1d6 vs L

Do we add reaction adjustment (from DEX) to the roll or will you do that?

I rolled a 2 for Init by the way, this isn't looking good for the home team

I will be firing at the spear-throwing orcs first. Two arrows at contestant number 1. I figure they'll be in range of my bow before I'm in range of their spears.

Subject: No offense

No offense was meant by post of coure to Rat I was just pointing out to Scott that there is no reason to be discouraged, all classes have their place, some just come into their own later than others.

Fighters, Paladins, and Rangers--Every group needs them. They are the brute strength of the group. Can't beat their hit dice, to hit numbers, etc. Paladins and Rangers when played well also add a lot to a group. Pretty good at all levels of the game.

Clerics and Druids--The quintessential healers, also needed in every group. They are also, and often forgotten, the second best meleers of the classes. Add that to pretty lenient armor restrictions (in some cases none) and the ability to cast spells and you have a powerful class at higher levels.

Wizards--Pretty poor when it comes to physical assets and combat, but that is why they are wizards. There shortcomings seem insurmountable in the early stages, but once you cast that first Fireball and wipe out an entire war band of baddies in a single flick of your finger, you feel pretty good.

Thieves--Great class all around. They are the skill monsters of the game. They have a plethura of skills and nothing beats a nice back stab. Their combat skill is so-so early on and they'll never be as good as fighters in that area (as well they shouldn't) but they can give any class a run for their money just on their varied skills (when used properly).

Bards--Jack of all trades. The only thing they seem to lack is healing ability. They get theif skills and magic-user spells. Due to their skills at inspiration and negating certain spell types, I think they are a really party friendly class.

Thus ends my unprovoked editorial...LET'S KILL SOME ORCS!!

At 1st level, everyone wishes they were a fighter. By 5th level, everyone wishes they were a magic-user (fireball and lightning bolt, etc, etc).

Subject: I'm Firing

When I see the first orc break through the smoke, I'm firing at him. 1 shot will hopefully drop him, if not, I'll do two. If the first shot drops one of them, the second shot will be at a different target, preferably beside the first.

If more than 10 orcs break through the smoke all at once, I'm casting sleep once they close within 30 yards. It affects 2d4 HD of monsters for 5 rounds. If it comes to this, don't attack the sleeping orcs until you finish off the awake ones first. I'll yell this information in a post if it comes to me casting this spell.

Scott, I'd hold onto the magic missile until you see a weak orc. It is 1d4+1 damage, but its an automatic hit, unless they have shield spell (doubtful).

No, no, no...these are probably more Mannequin minded types or better yet....relatives of Black Orc who like to take their work home with them.

Either way, something is going to die. I'll post after we know initiative order.

Subject: In the wagon. . .

Trillian waits with a wary eye and nocked arrow watching the surrounding areas. The smoke is a great hindrance, but the elf is confident in his sight as keeps watch on the unrecognizable and moving shapes in the distance.

Rat begins to spark small fires in the forest and Trillian watches around the halfling for any surprises that may overtake his small friend. When the fires are started, Rat makes his way back to the wagons and Trillian will offer him a hand into the wagon.

I will watch the areas around the carts, especially to the rear. If I see anything moving towards us in a hostile manner, I will shoot first and ask questions later (but only to our rear). I will also fire in any direction at Anvil's or other party member's request. I have an arrow nocked and ready to fly.

I say let the wagoneers drive them to the camp as fast and efficiently as possible. Those of us with missile weapons could ride on them and pick off the orcs as we see them.

It keeps our numbers togehter, doesn't leave any horses or supplies behind for the orcs and lets us pop a few of them on the way to find Carus.

That is just my thought.

I heard from him a few days ago. He has changed email addresses, but I'm really not sure what is up with him overall.

I hate delays (like most people), but I'm having fun and I certainly understand getting sick, so no worries.

Looking forward to continuing the adventures of our little motley crew.

Totally off topic from this thread--Brave New World adventure is still waiting for you. Send a character to my email. You get all the information you need on the new DJI site. If anyone else is interested, you are welcome to join too. Think everyone from this adventure is already in or given an intent to join except Wayne and Scott. I understand if you don't have the time for another game, but you are welcome if you so desire.

Now we are presented with a problem. The loggers are split into three groups, there are shapes moving about in the smoke, and this smoke is just terrible for my fine elven hair.

I don't have a spell to deal with the smoke because a nice gust spell is out of my range at the moment.

I'll follow the leader, but I strongly suggest that we don't split up. I think that is a recipe for disaster for our party and the loggers. Perhaps determining if those shapes in the smoke are friendly or hostile might be in order. If they are friendly we can gatehr everyone back togehter. If they are hostile, we can get a glimpse at what is before us and if this smoke is just a diversion to divide and conquer our group.

Arrow is nocked and ready to fly at the first sign of trouble though.

Walk circumspectly, but I'd suggest calling out to them. At least identifying ourselves if nothing else. I would suggest everyone call out, perhaps only Anvil, but feel it would be best.

Yeah, I think going back to town is a waste at the moment. When we get to the logging camp, we can decide if we need to send someone back to the town. Finding out what is in the scroll and if anyone recognizes the seal will probably be our best bets for moving forward and finding out who/what we are dealing with in Oaks Heart.

It appears someone is planning a nice little attack on Oaks Heart.

Just conjecture at this point, but once we survey and inspect the work site, checking out those "X" on the map might not be a bad idea.

Yeah, I looked at the die roller here, but I don't like it. You can't email results or verify rolls, so it makes it pretty easy to exploit. Not that I think anyone would fudge rolls here, but better to be above reproach than just hovering at that line.

Ah, didn't know we had a dice roller on this site! That makes things a lot easier.

Okay, all thieves' skills are checked by percentile dice, which is 1d100. You want to roll equal to or lower than your ability score, so if you have 35% to open locks, you want to roll 35 or lower.

Hope that helps!

Alright, here is a useful website for the die rolls.

http://www.openroleplaying.org/tools/dieroller/

It is pretty self explanatory and there are some instruction at the bottom of the page.

Rat, just punch in d% in the box marked roll, punch in SD's email address where it says mail to (yours also if you want to see the result, or test that it gets there) and in the purpose box just punch in "check for traps"

And Rat, I know that you could have figured all of that out for yourself, but I was just walking you through the process. And as always, I'm here to help

I vote for killing the tree, but that is just the elf in me. I'm not sure about it being evil, but for all intents and purposes it is an abomination to Trillian.

Subject: Resumed position

Trillian recovered from the nausea that had quickly come over him. He worked his way back to his feet and pulled another arrow from his quiver. Only when the elf had brought the fletching to his cheek did he notice the Hangman's tree was moving away from the party.

No one else appeared interested in ending the faux tree's wretched life, so Trillian would follow suit. He then heard Anvil ask Rat to inspect the satchel and watched as the dwarf went to retrieve the spear that had been at the base of the tree.

Trillian took to guarding the party as they inspected the satchel and spear. He kept out a wary eye and looked for movement in the area. He would also catch himself staring at the slow moving Hangman's tree. He took note of it swearing to himself to never be fooled by another.

Trillian will keep watch over the area as the party inspects the items. He will take the time to look over the Hangman's tree and note the differences between it and a regular oak. He will also assist in anyway the party deems necessary with the satchel.
