Subject: No tracking for me

Apart from just knowing what should be here and what should not, my druid would be pretty useless to you on a perimeter check.

Though, I will say Shadowdragon has hit on a good idea of searching the town perimeter to see if anything is out of place in a sense of "hey, that plant shouldn't be growing here" or "that animal isn't indeginous to this area".

Perhaps once we finish our present tasks, that will be something to do. We have two rangers and a druid, so covering the area should be quick (never say easy )

Subject: Valerus snaps back to reality

The walk through town had been peaceful and uneventful. The townspeople were scarce, but who could blame them with all of the trouble Orlane had experienced in the recent weeks. Heading north, Valerus took note of the tree clusters as the group neared them. Soon though, his attention was diverted as they crossed over a bridge. Valerus looked deep into the waters to see if there were any small ripples or signs of fish in the water. Perhaps after the group had settled into town and freed it from its troubles, he could test the waters with his fishing pole.

Over the bridge, the next sight nearly took Valerus' breath away. To the party's left, the druid spotted towering elm trees. He could only stare at their beauty as the group came to a halt in front of an inn. In his admiration, Valerus was oblivious to all around him and it showed when he bumped into Kyuss when the ranger stopped.

The druid barely heard the "How are you?" greeting that came from the woman on the porch and only came back to his senses within the group when Kyuss began speaking with the friendly lady.

Valerus is mesmorized by the ancient elm trees. At 75 feet, they are a marvel to the young druid. He will listen as Kyuss speaks to the woman, and may or may not ask more questions depending on what answers she gives. He will be doing all of this while turning to admire the elms from time to time.

Will be catching up on the story for the Orlane thread shortly. Should not take me long to get back into the swing of things, but give me a day or two to get back up to speed with what is happening.

Thanks to everyone for the congrats and well-wishes. Mom and baby both are doing fine now. It was just a little scary for a bit there.

Subject: Valerus leads the way

Well, it seemed everyone was prepared to split for the moment and find information where they could in the town of Orlane. The charismatic paladin and his group were headed toward the mayor's house, while the second group went in search of Garrus.

Upon hearing the local goddess was Merikka, Valerus had decided it may be best for him to go to the temple. The Oerth Mother Beory was the druid goddess, but Valerus knew he would have much in common with the priests of Merikka. That was, if any priests actually resided in the town. He would have to wait until they reached the temple before he would decide how much was to be gained by the trip.

Valerus is going to lead group 3 to the Temple of Merikka. When we arrive, Valerus will ask the questions as designated and submitted by the group on the Q&A forum. One of the others in group 3 can feel free to write up the questioning encounter. If this is not acceptable since I will not be on for a few days, I will relinquish the questioning to Kyuss, Haiden, and/or Stings to the priests/workers at the temple

My new roll up just arrived at 8 lbs 0 ounces and 20" long on Wednesday. Baby is doing fine, but mother is not. I have been and will be at the hospital for the next few days so someone else will have to be designated group speaker for a the time being and also the spokesman for group 3.

Sorry for any inconvenience guys, but it is what it is.

Subject: Reactions

I feel like people are reacting to the situation by what they have read and not by what their characters would actually do.

I think we should stick to the original plan with a few changes.

Group 1 go to the mayor's home and seek out what he knows.

Group 2 do what was originally posted for group 3 by looking over houses and looking for clues (and in the process try and find Deathstalker-which you would do because he is in your group).

Group 3 will head over to the temple. If Gunther told us they worshipped Merikka in this town, Valerus is the more likely candidate to go than Elkin because she is a nature goddess, unrelated but akin to Beory (my druid's patron goddess).

I will wait for reactions/rejections before I post anything.

Wayne is probably correct about securing rooms in the inns. Pretty sure there is not going to be a rush on the rooms since everyone keeps leaving town, not entering it.

Brandon is right too about going to the temple. Perhaps we can get some information there, and if Hammer and his group have come back to us to share what insight they have gained, perhaps even a visit to the mayor.

I think we can split up into our groups for these little jobs, once we get the straggler.

Which brings me to my next question, did we hear the woman scream across town where Deathstalker is keeping his inconspicuous low-profile?

If we did, that is probably going to be our next stop, regardless of what we do afterwards.

I am waiting for Group 1 to return.

I have mastered the technical wizardry of pen and paper. I actually have a sheet of notebook paper that I carry in my shirt pocket that has party notes on it. That way I can keep up at work and at home (and I don't have to keep referring back to the other posts on names, class, race, and who is playing what character). The early suggestions I made assigned the groups numbers 1, 2, and 3. We can stick with that or change it if everyone feels so led.

I have personally never played this adventure, so everything is new to me. I do hope, like Trip, that anyone who has played it will not ruin it for the rest of us who have not had the privilege.

Subject: Beginnings.....

The party huddled close together to decide what the next course of action should be. Along the way, Valerus had shown some familiarity with the territory and had shared with all his knowledge of farming communities. The group had listened intently on their two day travel, but now they were standing at the entrance and the locals seemed wary of their new visitors. If the party was going to get to the bottom of the strange happenings in Orlane, it was going to take a bit of tact so they did not frighten the already suspicious people in the community.

Upon the seeing the adventurers, many had rushed into their homes. A lone gentleman stood outside of a barn with a worrisome look upon his face. Perhaps he could enlighten them concerning the problems of the area.

"I think we need to proceed with caution," Valerus said to the group. "These people are going through a difficult time, and we do not need to complicate it further." The party nodded in agreement. "Perhaps a show of good faith to them would be the right course."

With that, Valerus suggested Gunther, Oriel, Sentinal, and Fandil go and speak with the gentleman. "Sir Paladin, your kind are known as protectors thoughout many lands, so you are our best representative. Would you be so kind to speak with him? Offer him our comfort and protection while gleaning what you can of the current situation."

Valerus looked to the other three companions that would accompany Gunther. "As Gunther comforts the farmer, be on the look out for anything out of the ordinary. The rest of us will wait here until you return, and then we will plan our next course of action."

Valerus will wait with the rest of the party, scanning any nearby fields and houses for anything peculiar. He will wait until Gunther and his group return before moving on.

Subject: If there are no objections

Good ideas from everyone so far, so here is the rough plan that I have for the post to get everyone moving. I've tried to make them diverse in skill, but as well putting a human in each group until we know for sure how the locals react to non-humans. I have also put a charismatic fellow (Gunther, Aelbric, and Valerus) in each group for favorable interaction if we can get it.

Group 1: Gunther, along with Sentinal, Oriel, and Fandil will attempt to speak with the worried looking farmer.

Group 2: Aelbric, Garrus, Doogan, Katai, and Elkin will head towards the Temple and see if there is any type of command structure in this town, and perhaps procure us lodgings for the evening.

Group 3: Kyuss, Haiden, Stings, and Valerus will wander through town taking note of the abandoned houses and looking for anything else out of the ordinary. Kyuss can in turn look for any tracks or signs that may seem out of the ordinary for such a small farming village.

If the farmer who stepped from the barn is still standing outside, I think we should try to speak with him. We may or may not get some useful information if he decides to speak with us.

Also, my guess is that a town this size is not going to have an inn, so our best bet for lodging will be the Temple of Merrika if there are still any acolytes or priest still in the temple.

Best course with such a small human settlement is let the humans do the talking. Knowing the Paladin is probably the most charismatic of us all, I suggest he approach the farmer and see what information he can glean. Send Haiden and/or Sentinal with him to just "look" at what they can while Gunther talks with the man.

Understand these people are going through a difficult time at the moment, so their suspicion of strangers is warranted. Also, Garrus is right, no one through around such words as adventurer, thief, or wizard--farm people are a jittery lot.

Also, I would not suggest that anyone go out alone. There are more than enough party members to group together by 2 or 3. People are disappearing from this village, so we know something is afoot and there is safety in numbers.

Ancient One's idea is a great one too. Look for signs of abandonment or even forced entry on the houses. Once we get a clue to who/what is missing then perhaps our Rangers can point us in the right direction.

Subject: Marching Order and Nightwatch

Just looking over the party, I think a good order for 2 man file would be:

Doogan Garrus
Kyuss Haiden
Sentinal Gunther
Katai Aelbric
Valerus Fandil
Stings Oriel

My reasoning is that is protects the casters in the middle, puts our brutes up front and doesn't leave our flank week. I put Doogan up front with Kyuss behind because Doogan is a Dwarf and it will be easy for Kyuss to fire arrows over his head if the fighting gets tight. Haiden is near the front for traps and locks if the need arises. I spaced out the healers (Gunther and Valerus) so they could reach anyone with the misfortune of being injured. The outdoor marching order could be similar to this too with Stings moving up and left, as well as Haiden dropping back and to the right side, with Oriel covering the rear.

Single file would be much of the same too with Doogan (not making you a meat shield Elephant, but I think Dwarven fighters are just built for this though) taking point followed by Garrus, Kyuss, Gunther and Haiden. Keeping our casters in the middle with Sentinal the Small, followed by Aelbric, Valerus, Stings, and Oriel.

The Rangers could alternate on point and flank duties. On the same note, the Thieves could alternate who gets to check for traps, unlock doors, etc or a few of them may be a bit specialized in one area over another and decide that way.

Nightwatch is easy. I would post 2 people per watch for 2 hour shifts. The night is typically only going to last 8 hours. My suggestion is to take the marching order up top and just alternate with it. Doogan and Garrus have first watch, etc. Keeps it simple and even makes it where no one will have nightwatch more than 2 consecutive days in a row.

These are just suggestions guys. I don't want anyone to feel like I'm ordering it all. As much as I have posted, you notice that I have some free time on my hands

Subject: Weapons of Choice

If everyone is okay with it, I'd be happy to be the party spokesman. I've played and DM'd both for many years. Also willing to help the D&D newbies out with some tips and tricks if they need it.

May I ask what is everyone's preferred weapon? That will make it a bit easier in setting up a marching order. We want the brutes up front, casters only need line of sight in most cases so middle is good, and ranged attackers (DeGotti comes to mind) are fine floating from middle to back. I remember someone mentioning their ranger was going to be sort of an archer too (Nomad, was that you). Whichever Ranger it may be, I would suggest he cover the flank and our tracks.

I use a spear as a walking stick/fishing pole/weapon, so it is typically in my hands. It is both melee and ranged, but I will probably default to my scimitar if someone comes up on me point blank.

Subject: Marching Order

I know that we had discussed it in passing before, but we need to set up a marching order.

In my past experiences, it is always a good idea to lead with fighters, which everyone has already expressed that thought. I think since we have two rangers one should be at the point for scouting and one should be at the rear for added protection and making sure we aren't leaving to many clues to our numbers if someone decides to follow us for nefarious reasons.

Magic users should be kept in the center, as safe as possible since they don't have the physicals. Thieves stay close to the middles also, keeping a wary eye out on both of our sides. They can also be effective as scouts if anyone is brave enough.

Just my 2 cents

Subject: Valerus Cain ponders his chance for adventure

Though not entirely uncomfortable in town settings, Valerus much perferred the outdoors this crowded meeting room he now found himself in. The call for adventure was answered by many, and he liked the diversity he was seeing in the room. Elves, dwarves, halflings, and some he was not quite sure about were all gathered together in a nice balance. He liked balance.

Upon listening to Balarok Hallfar's proposal, Valerus pondered all of the possibilities of this adventure. It would be a dangerous endeavor, but it appeared that some great malady had befallen the little village of Orlane. The young man wanted to help! It was a pity for such a bontiful farmland to fall into disuse at the current troubles. True, every harvest only put more coin into Balarok Hallfar's purse, but Valerus thought of all the good those crops performed for the good people of the surrounding communities. Plus, every harvest was a testimony to Beory, the Oerth Mother.

The young man surveyed the room after he had made up his mind to join in this little adventure. The pay was of no consequence to him. He liked to live off the land and enjoy the blessings of the Oerth Mother. However, he could look at a few of the adventures that were gathered and realize they were only here for the gold coins. The diversity he so enjoyed was plain for all to see, but how well would they meld together for the task at hand.

He noticed a human in the corner of the room offering a prayer to some higher power. He had the look of a holy man, but this was off-set by the battle axe he carried. He would soon get to know the warrior because he had agreed to join the adventure. Others of note were an elf that had the look of outdoors about him. While it was true all elves valued nature much more than their human counterparts, this one was different. He had the look of a guardian, one who would go out of his way to protect the Nature that Valerus held so dear. He noticed a few of the others too, but he would have plenty of time as they traveled the next few days to make the proper acquaintances.

It was now his turn to stand before Balarok Hallfar and sign on for the adventure. He walked to the podium and bowed to the rotund man, "I'll happily offer my services." Hallfar gave him little more than an agreeing nod and then pushed a bag of coins to Valerus. The young man was unsure of what buy with so much coin, but took the bag anyway. Who knew what dangers would be before him, and he thought perhaps it could be of some use.

That one druid is mine, so I suggest if anyone else joins this game, they need to be a cleric. I don't get enough healing spells in one day to take care of everyone if things go south for the party. Sure, I can patch it up and slap some tree sap on it to stop the bleeding, but that isn't sexy at all! Ever tried picking up the elven maidens with an oak leaf stuck to your forehead as a bandage? Take it from me, it's not as glamorous as it sounds!
