I completely agree! I didn't particularly like Mass Effect the first time I tried it (I'm giving it a go again), but Dragon Age has me completely hooked! The interaction between characters, the story, the character building, it's amazing!

I just wish they'd have a Pen and Paper version

What's the best back story for a character PC or NPC, that you've come up with?

Note: Moved this to survey's thread, seems to belong better there - Meri

Ok, so some friends and I are thinking of starting a 3.5e game, and I was wondering, what's everyone's opinion of the best 3.5e books/builds/apps/whatever?

Long story short (as per my usual), I recently relocated to a small town, and I was wondering if any of you had advice on trying to find a local gaming scene? Not many, if any, of the friends I've made here are into the whole RP thing, but I'm sure there are people around here who are! Any advice on finding a game?

I've finally come back to the Inn! Things have been crazy in RL, sickness in my family, problems throughout the lands of RL, but I'm finally back and in full form, ready to rejoin the ranks!

It's good to be back

The captain walked up and asked him his name.

He shifted uncomfortably in his chair, not used to this kind of thing. He pulled back his hood revealing a young face with silver hair and a scar on the right side of his face running from his forehead to his jaw, though his eye was intact. It was an old scar, with old memories, which flashed back to him. He shook them away and began to speak.

"My name is Lokar, Harper Lokar, captain. I look forward to working with you. I'm from the Juneaux Settlement on Guhgor, and I was trained as a soldier before I took up the workings of science as a hobby. I'm primarily a scientist these days, but I can hold my own, should things turn nasty," he picked up a sheathed short sword and laid it on the table, "Me and Lucille here."

He also placed a pistol on the table.

"As you can see, I'm well armed and ready to get under way, sir. Whatever you need, you can count on me."

Jackson half carried, half dragged the soldier into the vacant school. He was tired, had God knew what covering most of his jacket and pants, to say nothing of his boots, and it wasn't even lunchtime yet. This was certainly turning out to be a hell of a day.

He trained his gun on the soldier, still not trusting him, after getting him wedged into a chair.

"Yeah, I'm kinda curious about that one, too. Why did you fire on us?"

The private began to write down his name, rank and serial number before Jackson pistol whipped him across the face when he realized what he was doing.

"Look, we're not the bad guys here. We're human, like you. Me and Dancer here are ex-Army, so we know how you're trained to operate. If you cooperate with us, you may just get out of this alive. Now, why did you fire on us?"

The private gulped and wiped blood from the cut across his face before beginning to write again.

"I'm Chris Tyson, we were flying in on some mission to destroy the building you were in, they didn't give us many details, only that it was the former headquarters of a doctor that's been spreading some super-virus across Europe. That's all I know, man, I swear!"

Jackson thought about that for a moment...a doctor, huh?

"What was the doctor's name? Do you remember?"

The private began to write.

"Erkovich"

"Well, you can choose between an existence of nothingness, or we can try to bring you back to the land of the living where you belong. I think it's what Dawn would want, too."

Edward tossed his cigarette on the floor, stomping it out with finality. Stubborn spirit, he thought. Oh well, it was up to him anyway.

"Oh, Sh*t...Ivan..."

Jackson fell to his knees and vomited at the sight of his old friend lying mutilated on the floor. This was not a good day. Not a good day at all.

He noticed, while he was down there on the floor, however, that Ivan's hand seemed to be clutching something. He pried a CD-ROM from Ivan's hand. It was labeled "Project Beta - Staff List and Locations."

"Well, old friend, I hate to see you like this, but you may end up helping us yet," he turned to Mi-Kyeong, "Do you mind taking a look at this? I think this might tell us something about where the good doctor is located. And I tell you one thing, when we find him..." he trailed off. He couldn't think of anything bad enough to do to a man who'd caused the death of one of his best friends.

"Them's the breaks, sometimes," Edward told Adrian's spirit. Believe it or not, I do know how you feel. Not about being dead, but about feeling screwed over by the universe. Don't worry, though, we'll bring you back, one way or the other."

Deep inside, Edward wondered if he had a right to be so positive. Maybe so, maybe no, but it seemed their best bet at the moment.

"Wow, man, that's pretty...wow...that's just...dead, huh?"

He took a drag off his cigarette, and flames edged the smoke he breathed out.

"You know, I think we may just be able to do it. Maybe that giant circle of holding could be of some help. They're good at channeling a lot of energy for whatever means. We should totally look into that."

Edward, who had been fairly silent and sleepy up to this point, followed Donald as he was asked to do, Hex close behind in tow. "Sure, what's up?"

He rummaged through his shoulder bag for his cigarettes, lit one, and handed another one to Donald.

Jackson pulled the corpse off the hacker, and took one look at her leg and realized she'd need some medicine.

"Alright. I'll go poke around nearby and see if I find anything that we can use. First of all, I'm going to try to find some disinfectant and bandages. I think I saw a pharmacy near here, so I should be back soon."

He picked up a handgun that was lying near a decapitated security guard and checked the clip. Full, that was good. Dancer had shown her how to handle a gun, so she'd be fine until he got back. He gave her the gun and told her to be careful while he was gone.

Jackson pulled his own revolver out and began making his way back across the shopping center to the pharmacy he'd seen. On his way, he grabbed a canvas shoulder bag for the supplies, and a backpack for Mi-Kyeong's laptop. He had almost made it when he heard an inhuman growling sound. Sh&t.

The creature was different from the zombies. It stood three feet tall and crawled on four legs, tipped by razor sharp claws. It opened its mouth to growl at him, and he saw row upon row of equally sharp teeth. This was not looking to be a good day. Suddently, he remembered something. He felt around slowly in his jacket pocket and found what he was looking for...

The eased the pin out of the grenade and rolled it toward the creature...whatever it was...and hoped it would distract it long enough for him to escape the blast. Luck was with him, as he completely lost the creature's interest in favor of the grenade, and he made a break for the pharmacy counter. He jumped the counter just as the grenade exploded, sending pieces of stinking, fresh meat flying through the air. At least that was one thing they didn't have to deal with.

He put bandages and rubbing alcohol in the bag, as well as a couple of first aid kits, in case they'd need them. He also found, in a spectacular stroke of luck, some padding for the laptop. He jumped back over the counter, crouching as he fell to the ground, revolver drawn. Still nothing coming to investigate the blast. That was good. Near the pharmacy was a computer section, and he put whatever spare parts he could find in the backpack for the group's hacker.

All in all, a good shopping trip. He began to make his way back just as one of the lesser zombies rushed him from his right side. It startled him, and he ducked down, sending the zombie rolling across his back, right over him. Quickly, he took the revolver and promptly put a bullet in the zombie's head. Then another, just to make sure. You never knew with zombies...

He made it back to the hacker without further incident, and as she looked up, surprised to see him, he asked with a grin, "Did I miss anything?"

Edward finished his song and walked out into the moonlight where Donald sit, still smoking. He lit his own cigarette again and sat next to him, at least for the company. He stared up at the moonlight as Hex jumped in his lap for a nap. He stoked her head and thought about how f-ed up this day had been. Oh well, he thought, there was always tomorrow. He knew Dawn and Adrian's secrets through his Third Sight, but he'd never tell them as much. Hell, he thought, we all have our problems. He took a long drag off his cigarette and continued looking at the moon, waxing full. He felt the fire in his eyes as the anger and frustration over the day's events consumed him inside. He could control his anger after this long, he knew, but not without stress to his body. He figured most of the power he'd used today would result in some gray hairs in the morning, but he didn't care. Fact was, he didn't care about much at that point. He just wanted to finish his smoke in peace.

Subject: Ahh, young love

The young mage decided to wander around a bit, since his presence probably made things awkard. A little off the hallway, he found a room with a piano, and he sat down to play as Hex pearched atop it, blending in with the instrument.

The song he played was slow and mournful, echoing the feelings of those around him, as well as himself. Love? They thought they were in love? They knew nothing of it, but all the better for them.

Hex swayed her tail in time with the music as he began to think of his own ill attempts at love. Grace had been close to him for a long time, one of the few he'd allowed close to him. She was also gifted in magic, and that was how she died. He never spoke of that day, when a dark wizard's attempt at conjuring fire had gone awry, burning her alive. Edward had tried to save her, and the last words she'd breathed had been, "I love you, Edward."

He realized he too was crying now. It had been a long time since he'd cried, and the tears evaporated quickly at the heat from his raw emotion, leaving trails of salt down his face. He wiped them away and continued playing, thoughts dancing in his head like old lovers. Let them be in love, he thought. With love comes pain, and they've found that out. Let them be in love.

He knew what Dawn was talking about. Dark magic or particularly powerful magic could be tied to her particular...experience. Voodoo was full of those kinds of things. But, that was most likely why her magic was so powerful, it's what made her Dawn, and he thought about explaining that to Adrian, but it wasn't his place. Instead, he gave the two a little space and lit one of his clove cigarettes with a snap of his fingers and a flash of light. The smell of burning cloves filled the room, and he hoped the scent would calm the mood a bit. Crying made him nervous, as he wasn't especially in tune with that side of himself, let alone others.

Hex rubbed against his legs, comforting him a little. "Thanks, old girl." Fire burned in her eyes, too, reflecting his own discomfort at the situation, but he knew Adrian and Dawn were much more uncomfortable than him, and he knew not to stick his nose in where it didn't belong.

He was drawn to the sound of Adrian sobbing. Regardless of how he felt, he also had the need within him to help people, to ease their pain. He walked over to Adrian, "I saw what happened. Don't let him get to you, he's just being a bully."

Edward knew it was true, but he was still upset at the way Jacobi had treated his new friends. This wouldn't stand. Not at all.

Edward walked to where Donald was sitting and put a hand on his shoulder, "Just calm down, they're just playing the 'my d*ck's bigger' game. As for me, I'm getting a bit tired of it."

Fire shone in Edward's eyes, his frustration at the little spat between Adrian and Jacobi growing. He was about to step in, but thought better of it. They could tear each other apart for all he cared. This wasn't his fight, and he sure as hell wasn't going to make it his at the moment.

Subject: The key

"Good work finding that key, that'll save me some C4," Jackson said, noticing Dancer jingling the key ring. He took the charge apart and carefully separated the pieces, organizing them by jacket pocket. The phone call he'd gotten from Ivan had him worried, but they should get to him soon enough. Ivan was an old friend, and he sure as hell wasn't going to leave him hanging. Friends were hard to come by in this line of work.

"Well, it seems to me that something is FUBAR somewhere or another. You don't really see whole cities turned into the living dead very often without a damned good reason."

He pulled his gun out and prepared to cover the door.

"Ok, Dancer, try that key out and see if it works. If it does, we're going in quick, just in case there's more of those nasties on the other side. I'll cover left, you take right. Ready..."

Dancer tried the key and it worked. On the other side of the door was an alley, but it was vacant, as a quick search turned out. According to the GPS on Jackson's phone, Ivan should be two buildings over. There wasn't a door on the adjacent building, so it looked like they'd be going into the open.

"Alright, Colton, Mi-Keyong, let's get going before those nasties find out we're not in there anymore. We've got someone who needs help, and he just might know something. Dancer, check the end of the alley, see if there's anything in the street we should know about."
