Topic: Memorial Day
Subject: Freedom isn't free

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free!

Alôndas was surprised at the contents of the parchment; seemed that someone was searching for some kind of ‘command’ word or something.

Still standing at the large table, he looked up and thought for a moment and then he spoke.

“Dinner” he said and waited to see if anything happened.

“Foul creatures!” Gamard called as he stepped forward. “By the Sky-Light of purity, the Heavenly Orb, Father of Morning and Hallowed Circle I banish the darkness pulsing in your veins! I grant you rest eternal!” He added, under his breath: “Or go cower in a corner so my friends can beat you to your second death.”

Before Alôndas could finish his spell and burn the creatures; Gamard had stepped forth and issued his holy decree to the foul rats; as one they all hissed at him and then turned and fled out one of the portals. The mage let the magical energies he had been summoning return to their resting place.

“Well done, my friend!” He said with a smile as he stepped up beside the Khord and laid a hand on his shoulder.

With the rats so easily dispatched, the mage stepped forth to examine the room; the bodies he left to the clerics and other that could attend to them. He gave them only a cursory glance as he checked out the rest of the room.

Seeing the tapestries seem to be hiding something, he assist anyone else who would help, in pulling them aside and looking through the items beneath. Tossing aside one of the pillows, he finds a parchment which he picks up carefully.
(OOC: Unless some kind of roll is required to see who finds what.)

Alôndas quickly loses interest in the other items and steps away carefully examining the parchment to determine if it might be magical or perhaps just of the message variety?

(OOC: He will examine it for any signs of magical traps, sigils, markings, etc. If he finds nothing dangerous or suspicious looking, he will walk over to one of the tables, find a clean spot, and spread out the parchment to examine it, including reading it if he can.)

Alôndas stepped through the portal and examined their new surroundings; seeing the Giant Rats he sighed.

"I despise rats," he says as he steps to the side of the group to give himself a clear shot at the creatures.

He sets his staff against his shoulder inside his left arm as he raises them both out in front of him; his lips moving in ancient words of power. With his fingers spread out, his thumbs touching, he completes the spell and launches a sheet of flame at the advance of the creatures.

"Ware the fire!" He yells to the group to warn them not to step into his path lest they get hit by the spell of Burning Hands.

Mal's direction is as good as any!

As for BB equipment, Alôndas won't take anything he can't use; the necklace is enough. No he didn't put it on.

He will suggest thought that I might be of use and someone should take it before they go.

"I am already dead Squator, The bugbear said wearily using another term for a Khord, "If I return to the Mistress now, I will only be killed over a period of days to serve as example to others not to fail. So I ask for a clean death only and I will tell you what I know."

"We were sent here by the Mistress to slay the wizard who inhabits this place. The bolts on the crossbow are made specifically to slay mages. He is about to undergo the transformatiom. I do not know what that means but the mistress feared it happening so we were sent to stop it and kill him. Now you know why I do not wish to return. The necklace the Gelfling is playing with is a spell that would return us home. So unless you wish to meet the Mistress, You might not want to break that crystal."

Alôndas listened intently as the bugbear spoke and when he mentioned that the necklace would take him back to this thing's Mistress, he decided NOT to don the necklace. He looked at it once more and then slipped it into one of his pouches after wrapping it in a piece of cloth to protect it.

While he didn’t feel any regret at the ending of the Bugbear's life, he did admire it's dedication and courage when faced with death. After that unpleasantness was over, they turned to eating and then watches were set and they turned in for the night.

He had taken the first watch as he had said, but he was shortly into his meditation when he suddenly drifted off. He awoke with a start and realized that some time had passed since; he didn’t know how long but it felt like the entire night had passed. Not that they knew what time of day it was, but he knew something had caused him to pass out; this troubled him as he didn't like not being in control of himself.

Once everyone was up; he assisted in examining the other portals for any sign of which way to go. Checking out the portal in the room that the bugbear's came from, he turned to the group and offered.

“Perhaps we should take the one the bugbear's came through,” he said, “we can perhaps assume that they took care of any dangers that may lurk in it's destination.”

Whatever was decided, he was ready to defend the group with his magic, which was now back to full potential after the night's rest.

(OOC: So if I understand your post DM, the first watch fell asleep mysteriously and so everyone slept through the entire 'night' as it were. If I am reading it wrong, let me know and I will edit my post.)

Traveller is sort of Pre-Serenity. It is what we had back in the good ole days of 2nd ed that passed for a Space Adventure Game. It was good, but I like the Serenity rule system better myself.

PJR - You should definitely look at joining the Serenity game, I am anxiously awaiting my turn to play in ROC. If you want to play Traveller, this is very similar I think.

Subject: Interrogations over, let's experiment!

"Really, Mal? Are you going to cut him up bit by bit? I didn't know you were a pirate, but that does sound like a pirate-ty thing to do, I guess. Sounds messy... bleh... all that blood and guts trailing all over the place. Bleh!"

“Look, I have no love for Bugbears, but maybe this time we should try to talk to it, instead of just threatening it with hellish pain. Perhaps we’ll learn something about this place.”

“Whoa Dude. Let’s just all be chill here. I don’t do violence but you guys are like the Elvis of violence and you do what you do and all that is cool. But cutting a dude when he’s tied up is just not cool dudes. What I mean is we should try to reach an equilibrium with life and the universe and something.” The Cat explains as he pulls out another piece of paper and rolls some catnip into a tube. “How ‘bout we share some nip and try to be like friends, dig?”

Alôndas sighed and threw up his hands as he heard most of the others protest the idea of torturing the bugbear for information, “You people have no concept of interrogation.” He knew that with all the dissension over interrogating the creature that they would never get anything from it now.

“It was a bluff,” he said shaking his head again as he moved away from the creature leaving it to the others, “I would not condone torturing a bound captive either, but the beast didn't know that till you all starting yapping!” His tone left no doubt that he was disappointed in a plan that, while it only had a slim chance of working, now had zero chance of success.

“Well me might as well rest here for awhile to rest and heal,” the mage said as he moved over to one of the corners and sat down, “I suggest watches of at least two people at a time and the 'prisoner' will have to be watched carefully until you figure out what you want to do with it.”

Sitting in the corner, Alôndas looked closely at the necklace. It held a mystery and he wanted to unravel it.

“I will take the first watch,” he said looking up at the others, “if someone will join me?”

***************************************

On his watch, he would examine the necklace, studying the markings, if any, and staring at the center part which seemed to be important. He would press his skin to the necklace, trying to sense anything he could from it. He would keep an eye on his watch companion and their prisoner and listen intently for any sound of someone else arriving through one of the portals.

**If it makes it to the end without incident**

At the end of their watch,if he hadn't found anything out from his examination thus far, he will get the attention of whomever is sharing his watch and ask them to join him for a moment.

“It's time, awaken the next watch,” Alôndas told his watch companion, “I am going to see if this necklace will do anything when I don it.”

Once the next watch was up, and there were enough to keep an eye on the prisoner, “Keep and eye on me for anything... drastic. If something seems very wrong, take it off of me please.” He gave them a faint smirk and then slowly he slipped it over his head to rest on his neck.

The Monster looks intently at the Sylvari and spat on the floor by his feet. 'I fear neither death nor any torture from the likes of you, Gelfling!”

“I bet you fear this Mistress though, huh?” Alôndas said noticing the way the Leader was watching the necklace he had taken from him, “you must if you serve her.”

The mage was too intelligent to give into petty name calling, especially from a creature like this one. He raised the necklace and held it so the Bugbear could see it but it would stay out of his reach if it attempted to get it.

“This must be important, I take it,” he stated, “it belong to your Mistress? It how you communicate with her or is it how she 'controls' such a weak-minded being like you?”

Alôndas was sure the necklace was magical even though he couldn't sense anything unusual; it was unlike anything he had ever seen before and he was curious as to it's purpose.

Alôndas tossed most of the items he took off of the Leader into a pile out of reach of the Bugbear; the necklace however he held onto sensing something special about it. He finished securing the creature and double checked the bindings to make sure it wouldn't get away. When the creature woke up he was standing back, his stave in his hand ready to bash the creature in the head if need be.

“Mistress?” the mage asks when the Leader is finished speaking, “I think you should tell us about this 'Mistress' that you speak of, otherwise I might let my friend here have at you with his little blade.” He gestured with his head towards Mal who seemed to have a intense hatred of Bugbears. The Elf Mage didn't hate these creatures, but he did indeed find them disgusting and cruel and would consider the world a better place without them.

If there was any 'interrogation' of the leader, he wouldn't participate in such other than to ask questions if necessary, but he wouldn't stop anyone from 'persuading' the creature to talk.

Seeing the group was tired, having not really rested since coming to this place, the Mage would suggest that they rest here and that they post watches and they secure their prisoner, if he was still alive, and that they should set 2 people for each watch while they rested.

(OOC: The only thing that Alôndas took was the necklace off of the Leader; he will examine it while he is standing a watch but he will not don it just yet.)

Actually, I don't mind the low number of posts and would have you in my game, however..

At this time I don't think I will be able to start this game after all. I am glad I hadn't already otherwise it would have come to an abrupt end.

My workload has increased and it will leave me little time online and I think I will be able to keep up with the few games I am playing in but won't have time to run a game myself.

Sorry to all those that signed on, I do look to start a game in the future if time permits.

Alôndas sighed as he glanced around and saw all their opponents were down. He knew the leader that had been felled by this color spray was only unconscious; he started to say that someone should attend to Garmard when he saw Wembley splash through the water to the Cleric and then yell for Dudley to assist him.

He then quickly stepped over to the Bugbear leader and threw away his weapons, but first he used the creature’s dagger or other blade to cut strips from its clothing. He used the strips to bind the creature’s arms and legs tightly; making sure to bind its arms behind it, at the elbows as well as the wrists.

Once it was secured, he would search the leader for anything useful or interesting; he hoped to find some kind of information about this place or even these creatures and what they were doing here.

Salvator, if you look up at my last post prior to this one, you will see the characters listed next to the players, it lists the level of your characters.

If you have other questions let me know.

Oh, don't forget to send me your character sheet via PM, but please post your short intro in this thread. It doesn't have to be large, just look at some of the things the others have already posted.

Thanks!

Subject: Positions currently filled

Ok.. looks like I currently have 4 players who are interested.

SirSadaar – Human Fighter (Lv 2)
SilentOne – Sylvari Mage (Lv 4)
Kamina - Khord Priest (Lv3)
Salvator Navaar – (Race?)Rogue (Lv 3)

Nice Intro Kamina, exactly what I am looking for on each character. Just a little something from each of you to give a flavor of your character.

Oh, this group is acquainted with each other, you have previously adventured once before briefly so you know one another. You will be meeting up at the beginning of the adventure to answer a summons from someone who the party has dealt with previously.

If you have questions about character generation let me know but most of what you need should be in the previous post above regarding generation but don’t be afraid to ask if you have questions.

Thanks!

Subject: Character Generation.

Ok, when it comes to AD&D 2nd Edition, it is much simpler than 3.5 in my opinion. If you haven’t played 2nd ed, don’t worry, as the DM I will take care of the in-game rolls, and all the mundane things. After character generation, most of your job as players will be the writing and telling me what you are intending to do. Remember, that if you are in any combat situation, or wherever a roll might be needed because you are using a skill, then you have to post your intent and I will let you know if you are successful.

For those who don't have the AD&D 2nd ed, here is a link to the place where you can download the rulebook in pdf format.

AD&D 2nd edition Player's Handbook

Instead of rolling for your attributes (Str, Dex, etc.), I will use the points system, 86 points to spread among your attributes. Spend your points and then add or remove your racial modifiers just make sure to note where you had to add/sub. Only one 18 stat allowed, as you are all low levels, and nothing above 18 is allowed, even after you add racial modifiers.

I will let you know the level of your character, between 2-4, and then you will generate your character based on that and use Max HPs for those levels, plus Con bonus if any.

You will have standard weapons, that you are proficient in, and armor for your character along with standard gear. You put down what you want and I will let you know if it is approved or not. Make sure that your character sheets are NOT posted in the recruitment thread; PM it to me please.

Ok, that is enough to get started. If you have questions, let me know either here or by PM.

Here is a character sheet to fill out and PM me when you are complete:
