Topic: Star Trek: the Edge of Duty Q&A
Subject: First post in forever

Post's up, it's pretty introspective, but gives a little insight into how Mathias thinks and goes about his job, life the universe and everything. Makes him seem like less of a gruff silent security guard.

Enjoy.

Also in regards to folks filling in blanks on my behalf while was AWOL, I don't mind at all, I realize Berk is a semi-central character and sometimes he needs to talk, so please don't hesitate to do so should it be necessary.

Stardate 2365.02.09
USS Peregrine, Captain's Mess - 1412

Mathias stood at the back of the Captain's Mess, standing at ease, merely observing the proceedings as they played out before them, watching Lt. Zai advocate for Chief Crane who so far had conducted herself calmly and professionally, answering questions as they were posed. At this point his mind had started to wander.

"Petty Officer Wright ought to completing the diagnostic of the forward torpedo launchers A prior diagnostic had suggested there was a small transient power drain in the induction coils. He also needed to get some range time in at some point today"

"Lieutenant Berk."

Mathias, snapped to.

"Assuming that you were to take us by surprise, how long would it take you to kill everyone in this room with the sidearm you are wearing?"

"Sir?" Taken somewhat aback by the directness of the question.

The Captains eyes narrowed, he repeated the question coldly and deliberately. "Just answer the question, Lieutenant. If you were to take us by surprise, how long would it take you to kill everyone in the room with your sidearm?"

Mathias shifted his weight back and forth on the balls of his feet still processing the question "Er... well, sir. It honestly would only take a few seconds. I mean, we're practically at point blank range, so assuming I prioritized my threats, it wouldn't take long."

The Captain nodded. "Thank you, mister Berk. That estimate, of course, is for your sidearm; if I am not mistaken, we stock phaser rifles in our armory that are more powerful than your hand phaser, and we also stock heavier weapons and explosives - some of which could, in fact, punch a hole through the hull. Do we not?"

"Yes, Captain. We have more powerful weapons like the ones you describe." Still feeling uncomfortable. "We have sufficient armaments to arm a small nation, perish the thought."

"Thank you, Lieutenant." answered the Captain, seemingly satisfied with Mathias' response.

He turned his gaze to Lasad. "Lieutenant Lasad, how difficult would it be to use the replicator to create various engineering compounds that could be used to commit murder?

********************************************************

Silas went silent then, and allowed the silence to hang over the room with a chilling effect. The Captain's eyes scanned the room and then fixed his gaze on Crane once more.

"Chief," he spoke, "I want to be abundantly clear - my issue is not with the fact that you questioned my judgment. Had you gone through appropriate channels and raised your concerns to me, I would have shared the above data with you and hopefully set your fears at ease. If, for some reason, you had information that I was not privy to, I would have gladly considered it. I do not take the safety of this ship or her crew lightly. I am responsible for more than sixty souls, and I bear that responsibility with every fiber of my being."

"I don't doubt that for a second, he seems nothing but committed to his crew. I'm not sure he's the most approachable CO I've had though.

The Captain's voice once again took on a hard edge. "However, much like I choose to trust you and the other specialists in the execution of your duties, so too do I expect for you to trust the chain of command. It is my job to make decisions like this one, and I do not believe that it is too much for me to expect you to understand that I will make those decisions in the best interests of this crew, this ship, and our missions. This is the entire foundation of the operation of a starship - we must trust one another to do our jobs... especially on a craft of this size, where there is little to no redundancy in any given department or position. If that trust is not there, we are doomed to fail before we even undertake a task."

Drake shook his head slightly. "Lieutenant Zai feels 'almost ashamed' in the lack of faith we as a command staff have instilled that would cause you to feel you needed to go outside the chain of command to resolve this matter." He paused for a moment. "I, on the other hand, am absolutely appalled that such a condition would exist to begin with."

His face a cold, stony mask, the Captain continued. "I am unaware of any situation that I or Lieutenant Zai have so grossly mishandled over the past three months to justify such a lack of faith. In fact, I can think of no situation during that time - that being, of course, the time since I assumed command of this vessel - that crew safety has ever been put at risk from any decision. It would seem to me, then, that the failing is yours, Chief - not ours."

Drake sighed. "The chain of command is there for a reason. If it is not respected, people die and ships are lost. It may sound like an oversimplification, but that is the absolute truth. As a scientist, you may not have been involved in such situations, but that does not diminish their reality. Absent clear and irrefutable evidence that the Captain is making a choice to unnecessarily endanger the crew or the ship, you are honor bound to respect that chain of command. Even then, many an officer has found themselves on the wrong side of a court martial for choosing to stand against it; you must realize that while you are, in fact, a trained expert in your field, the fact is that Starfleet has expended not insignificant resources to train Command officers to likewise be fit for their posts. Let the record show that I have an open door policy - you may always bring your concerns to me - but even so, I expect for orders to be followed and the chain of command to be respected at all times. There are no exceptions."

It might be a failing on their part if the crew doesn't feel comfortable approaching the Captain.

The Captain cleared his throat. "Chief Crane, had we still been at port when I discovered your transgression, I would have beached you on the spot. Fortunately for your career, that was not the case. Be that as it may, here is my ruling."

Drake fixed Crane with his gaze. "Chief Petty Officer Lauren Crane, I do hereby find you guilty in the matter of this gross violation of the chain of command, and find no mitigating circumstances to justify your actions in any degree. Therefore, your punishment will be as follows.

First, you are hereby reduced in rate to Petty Officer, First Class. All privileges and benefits are likewise hereby reduced.

Second, you will be confined to the brig for three days, during which you will subside on bread and water rations only.

" Three days in the brig, and getting busted down in rate? A little extreme? Maybe? It certainly sends a strong message, the Captain isn't one to be crossed.

Third, upon completion of your time in the brig, you will return to duty, as the science department can ill afford being short an experienced staff member. However, for the next fourteen days, you will remain confined to quarters when not actively conducting your normal duties or such special projects as your department head may assign to you. During this fourteen day period, you will forego any 'off days' as may have been part of your normal schedule, instead making yourself available for duty shifts as needed by your department head to help cover for the strain of others being forced to work extra shifts to cover for your absence. You may visit the crew mess to obtain your own meals during this time period, but you will take said meals in your quarters.

During this fourteen day period, you will be assigned extra duties to be completed once your normal daily shifts are done.

Fourth, for the fourteen days following this period, you will be likewise assigned extra duties to be completed once your normal daily shifts are done.

Finally, a written reprimand will be placed into your service record."

The Captain took a breath. "I trust that this will be the end of the matter, and that chain of command will never again be an issue with you, Petty Officer Crane. Understand that if anything like this ever happens again, the punishment will not be so light - your career in Starfleet will be over. Understand, too, that I expect you to return to full and vigorous execution of your duties. If I find out otherwise... well, let's trust that I won't find out otherwise."

Drake looked around the room. "If no one else has anything to add?"

Nothing but silence.

Silas nodded. "Very well. Lieutenant Berk, please escort Petty Officer Crane to the brig. The rest of you are dismissed."

Mathias approached Crane from behind taking a knee next to her and spoke softly, he took no pleasure in marching a member of the crew to the brig. "Petty Officer Crane, if you'll come with me please."

At least she's not being thrown in Solitary

***********************************************************

Mathias and PO Crane had rode the turbolift in silence, the doors opened on deck 5, fortunately the security office was all but deserted, save Crewman Galla, Mathias nodded at him and gestured for him to follow him into the Brig.

Mathias led Lauren into the waiting cell and activated the force field, the static zap and a slight smell of ozone filled the air as it activated filling the room with a very faint hum. "I need to get someone from engineering to come check the field emitters, they might be running a tad hot. PO Crane made her way to the bed and sat, a defeated expression showing on her face

"Miss Crane, should you require anything not prohibited to you as per the Captain's orders, please inform Crewman Gallo, beyond that, a security officer will be by twice daily with your meals." Mathias explained.

"Aye, sir." she responded, softly.

(OCC: Lots of Mathias' thoughts in this one, I was at a loss for what else to do and it seemed like a nice opportunity to display a different side of this character)

Or not so happy day if you don't want me back (or need consoling after that dismal showing for your general election my american friend). I'm all caught up with homework for the little while, and I'm just catching up with reading posts. I want to have something up for Berk by the end of the day tomorrow. It's good to be back.

Hey folks sorry I've been AWOL, I've been pretty swamped with writing assignments and it leaves me not terribly keen to write more. I have a break in the action coming up so I should be able to be a little more active as of then. I felt like I should at least provide an explanation for my prolonged silence.

USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room, 1330

(OCC: This finally concludes the Captain and Berks meeting that I left hanging for the better part of a week, I ought to have more up tonight or tomorrow morning.)

Mathias stood at the doors to the turbolift, attention focused on proof reading his report on the Tesenblen debacle for what felt like the fifteenth time, as the doors opened a crew member, whose name escaped him snapped to attention as the door opened, Mathias raised his eyes for a second and nodded in a greetings and went back to his report, but he felt a somewhat pregnant silence until the crewmen alighted on deck 2. Moments later the doors opened to the corridor adjoining the bridge and ready room, Mathias went for the backdoor, eager to avoid the bridge until the incident was well behind him. He stopped at the door and took a moment to compose himself and then tapped the door chime.

"Come in," responded the Captain, his tone neutral, neither betraying his displeasure or pleasure at Mathias' arrival.

Mathias stepped through the door and the faint swish of the door cutting through the relative silence of the Ready Room offering the Captain a crisp salute and then probably more stiffly than he intended offered the Captain the PADD

"Here is my report on the arrest of Lieutenant Tesenblen, Captain."

Silas nodded in acceptance and took the offered device. "Thank you, Lieutenant," the Captain replied. "Please, have a seat."

The Captain to a moment to read the report, in the interest of time Mathias had kept the report consise, but honest, no matter how damning that information might be.

He'll arrive at the part that may cost me my position right about now,

Mathias watched as the Captain's brow furrowed somewhat and his gaze darkened and then turned to look at Mathias, he couldn't help but draw in a sharp but hopefully silent breath.

"Let me be sure that I understand, Lieutenant," the captain began.

"While you and Lieutenant Reid were otherwise occupied, Starfleet security boarded my ship, arrested my Chief Science Officer, and removed a large portion of my botany lab. This activity went unnoticed for a few reasons, most notably that Starbase personnel would have not been considered out of place, there were several last minute transfers..." the Captains anger was now palpable, "... most notable being Ensign Agris, who conveniently left us to serve aboard the Coronado."

Drake drew a deep breath. "It is your finding that the arresting team - apparently assisted by Ensign Agris - ensured that our personnel were otherwise occupied so as to not notice the arrest and raid. Do I have this right?" Mathias felt the Captian's steely gaze bore through him if a gaze could kill this one would have.

"Yes sir." Mathias replied smartly, there was no reason to fully elaborate, that was exactly what happened and there was no reason to grovel.

The Captain sighed and leaned back in his chair. It felt as if a non existent wind shifted in the room.

"Good work, Lieutenant," Silas spoke. "I cannot fathom why Starfleet security felt it necessary to operate in such an underhanded manner, but truthfully, there was no reason for us to suspect this sort of activity from them. Of course," he paused with a rueful grin, "we'll have learned our lesson now, won't we? Never again will external personnel be allowed free reign of our ship, even if they are Starfleet - the regulations can be damned."

"Aye sir, thank you sir! I'll work with ops to draft new access protocols for starbase personnel in time for our next resupply."

A weight was lifted off of Mathias' shoulders, perhaps this wouldn't be shortest tenure for a Chief Tactical officer the fleet had ever seen after all.

Silas shook his head. "Very well. Lieutenant, you are dismissed," he spoke.

Attempting to keep his tone neutral Mathias stood up "Aye sir, have a good rest of your day sir."

Mathias turned and made for the door, it was best not to tempt fate.

I'm thinking I'll weigh in on our staffing issue, my thought is that it makes sense to have someone from ops fill both the gamma tac and ops shift if they're cross trained they should be able to operate everything from their station and if the fur really starts to fly either myself or ody will be up on the bridge in a hurry anyway. Obviously the call isn't mine but that frees up a security or tactical person for other duties.

In other news, I should have a post or two up this weekend, thanks for being patient with my dropping off the face of the planet.

I've been in the process of drafting more back story for most of the members of security, namely the individuals that have just come aboard, plus ensign Blackmon, since I've interacted with her a lot and she is literally a stub in the roster. With school starting in September, work and other pressing writing commitments that's been a bit slow going though so if you want to possess one of the sec/tac npc feel free to flesh them out as you see fit, I would not be upset in the least.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - CTO's Office - 1250

"Let's check the transfer list again." Mathias watched as Reid's fingers danced over the wall panel next to him, pulling up the transfer list, the computer returned a slight chirp acknowledging his secuity code and the names of personnel transferred on and off the Peregrine began to slowly scroll down the screen.

John let a low whistle. "Well there are a few new names here that weren't there fifteen minutes ago when I filed my report to you."

Mathias cut in, "That's not suspect at all..." If they're going to board the ship and take our science officer right from under it stands to reason they aren't above pulling a last minute transfer either.

"It appears three of our security crew had last minute transfers off the boat. Crewman Sinatra and Waddle were assigned the Starbase 118 and were replaced by Rotet and Domms. But look at this, Ensign Thorn Agris was assigned to the Coronado. ,.. I'll bet you dimes to donuts there's where the security team got their access and clearance to the Science section. You and I were preparing for the Ambassadors and Ensign Blackmon was preparing to man the security station on the bridge. Agris was the only security officer not otherwise assigned. He was ambitious but seemed a bit impatient to work his way through the line. I had just chalked it up to immaturity."

Mathias looked to Reid, raising an eyebrow, "With all of the departure preparations, he easily could have brought the security team aboard and the presence of dozens of other starbase personal would mean no one would have raised so much as an eyebrow. It doesn't look like they sent a replacement either, which leaves us to find someone or go short handed."

John stepped aside to let Lt. Berk view the screen. "Sir, I'm sorry, when Lt. Rockatansky was transferred out he warned me to watch the transfer onto Peregrine but I didn't consider that there may be trouble brewing within. I'd say we need to interview Rotet and Domms but my guess is they were pawns just to make to make these transfers look less suspicious. If you agree I'll start the report for Captain and have these finding ready for you to present in just few minutes,. Sir, being that I failed to catch this I'm prepared to face Captain Drake as you see fit."

Mathias folded his hands on his desk, showing a somewhat tired smile, "I can hardly blame you for not catching something that I missed as well, besides I'm not in the business of throwing subordinates under the bus for personal gain. I'll have a word with our new transfers and any on duty staff that may have seen something if you can compile any relevant security and transfer logs for me. I'll complete the report and present our findings to the captain. Other than that you needn't worry about anything, who ever did this was counting on the somewhat chaotic environment aboard the ship as cover and it worked, we just need to pick up the pieces now."

What he was doing was pretty tightly under wraps though, for station personal to catch wind would require someone to throw him under the wheels, at the very least how it was handled was highly irregular and in the context of the other goings on highly suspect. That's out approach for the most part.
