LARP stands for live action role-playing, I play in a game called the bloodaxe Saga, it's heavily inspired by the Norse sagas and the great pagan invasion of great Britain.

Subject: Break room thoughts.

So in sitting on my coffee break thinking, what does a day in an average Starfleet officer look like, and what does a day look like for a senior officer look like? This mostly stems from the discussion of medical duty shifts being 12 hours, probably a 4 on 3 off rotation if it was real life or your staff would die of exhaustin. This led to me thinking that the 3 shift rotation makes no sense since it leaves no time for admin work short if working more than 12 hours which isn't a problem really but again even on a ship where most things are automated you still have issues of staff burnout which with your main decision making staff could be fatal. So how do senior staff deal with all their admin tasks and and still work duty shifts

We could rp having some staff from other departments cross train as field medics, takes some stress off the medical staff and would allow for some good holodeck rp.

I was thinkin, once some of the hectic activities die down it would make sense for the CTO to at least observe security staff but eventually everyone else on the phaser range to see if more training/guidance is needed.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine; Corridor outside Transporter room one - 1200

Mathias stepped out into the hallway, the Ambassadors in following him with Lieutenant Zai taking up the rear. He couldn't help but feel that both the Rytain and Kuldar delegates were watching his every move. It was apparent to him that they were adept at reading a room, and picking up on imperceptible tells, weaknesses to be exploited, probably without even hearing anyone say a word, by the way they had scanned the room as they stepped off the transporter pad. Mathias kept his stride confident and smooth, not wanting to let on how uneasy they made him, that this was his first real day in his assignment, nothing to suggest that he might be the weakest link in the chain.

Lt Zai had lingered in the transporter room for a moment after Lt Berk and his team had escorted the ambassadors out, but it wasn't long until the Trill caught up with the delegates and their escorts. Berk and his men were stoic and silent as they led the way toward the visitors' quarters, tending to their duties with efficiency and as much unobtrusiveness as they could muster. Tochi, on the other hand, felt the need to play a more interactive role in hosting the Kuldar/Rytain contingent. "Gentlemen," he smiled, falling into step beside Threel and D'Lar, "Thank you both, again, for understanding our need to assign you escorts while you're aboard."

Mathias was relieved when the pregnant silence that floated over the precession he had the pleasure of leading was broken by Lt. Zai. At least all eyes aren't on me anymore he thought as he relaxed slightly, no longer under a microscope.

"Of course, Lieutenant," Threel responded, offering a smoothly tolerant smile of his own, "given the history between Ambassador D'Lar's people and my own, it was all but expected..."

"Even if that history is only a small part of the decision," D'lar harrumphed. "These escorts, as you call them," the wolfish man continued, gesturing vaguely at Berk and the Security Officers who attended them, "are only a small part of the protocols your Captain has enacted in advance of our arrival, are they not?"

"Very astute of you, Ambassador," Zai affirmed with a faint nod, "In addition to your escorts, there are certain areas of the ship to which, in good conscience, we cannot allow you access. As such, Lt Berk's men will be a much more notable presence in those sections and, as we're sure you've surmised, additional measures have been implemented to insure that access is limited to authorized personnel, only."

"What the Lieutenant means to say, Threel," D'Lar grunted, "is that the Federation would prefer we not attempt to steal their technology or sabotage their ship."

Tochi offered the faintest of shrugs at the Kuldar Ambassador's interpretation. "That was not the sentiment we intended to convey, Ambassadors but, again, you have the right of it," he returned diplomatically, "Given the Peregrine's typically more militaristic role as opposed to a ship like the Coronado,"

"It only makes sense," Threel interjected.

"It only makes sense," Tochi echoed with a smile. "That said, we do not want you to feel as if you are confined during your stay with us. In addition to the quarters that Lt Lasad has prepared for you, you will also have priority access to any of our limited diplomatic and recreational facilities such as the holosuites, the gymnasium, and the lounge, at your discretion. These amenities, of course, are not precisely on par with what you might have enjoyed aboard the Coronado but they are at your disposal,"

"This is not a pleasure cruise for us, Lt Zai," D'Lar chuffed.

"But your hospitality is appreciated," Threel added, casting a somewhat disapproving sidelong glance at his Kuldaren counterpart, "You will relate this to your Captain, yes?"

"Of course," Tochi nodded, "and we're sure that he, in turn, appreciates your understanding." They were nearing the Ambassador's' quarters, now, and, as there was much more to do before Peregrine would put Starbase 118 behind her, the Trill XO decided it was best that he take his leave of the ambassadors for the time being. "Lt Berk's people will be happy to escort you to any of the facilities we have mentioned, ambassadors," he stated, "and, should you have any security concerns, we're sure that Lt Berk will make himself available to address them, personally. Similarly, if there are any dietary concerns or issues with your quarters that may have been overlooked, our Chief of Operations, Lt Lasad, can see that those are tended to. Should there be anything else, Ambassadors, feel free to contact me directly. Our office is on deck two and, of course, we will respond to any contact over comms as quickly as we are able."

The conversation between Zai and the ambassadors wound up naturally just as they rounded the corner to VIP quarters. "Ambassador D'Lar, these are to be your quarters for the duration of your stay." Mathias said as he approached the door, one of the escorts taking his place next to the door. "Crewman Galla will be here to act as your escort feel free to approach him if you have any immediate security concerns, and the terminal on the desk will allow you to contact both the security office and ops should you speak to either myself or Lt. Lasad." Mathias explained gesturing to Crewman Galla and then the desk at the far end of the room.

Ambassador D'Lar responded with a terse nod and entered his quarters.

"That means he approves Lieutenant." said Ambassador Theel, an amused smile on his face.

"Your quarters are just down the hall, I've assigned Crewman Smith as your escort, again don't hesitate to contact myself, Lt. Lasad or Lt. Zai should you have any concerns, beyond that I hope you enjoy your stay on the Peregrine Ambassador." Mathias explained, pointing down the corridor to a man in Starfleet gold standing at attention.

"I'm sure everything will be in order, thank you Lieutenant." responded Ambassador Threel, still smiling.

(OCC and there we go, our special guests are all tucked in for their voyage, and I didn't space them or lock them in the brig, special thanks to Eol for giving me a hand with the post.)

If anyone wants to give me a hand walking the ambassadors to their quarters I would appreciate the help, I don't feel like I'm at a point where I can nail the "voice" of the ambassadors without them sounding incongruous compared to other people writing them.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Lt. Berk's Quarters - 1150

Mathias stepped out the doors of his quarters, smoothing his uniform and adjusting his phaser on his belt, with the door to his quarters swishing faintly behind him.

"Whom ever designed our ceremonial dress definitely didn't have security personnel in mind."

The phaser was more a show of authority than a show of force, he was the chief tactical officer and he felt he should look the part, even if his dress uniform precluded him from being effective in a fight.

"Deck 3, transporter room one" Mathias said as he entered the turbolift, he felt car accelerate briefly before its inertial dampeners fully compensated for the sudden acceleration.

---------------------------------------------

The turbolift doors opened in front of Mathias and he stepped into the corridor smoothing his uniform one last time as he walked the short distance to the transporter room. The VIP escorts were posted outside the transporter room, standing at attention as he approached, he nodded to them and made for the doors of the transporter room which opened in front of him and Mathias saw that the Captain, Lieutenant Zai and Lieutenant Lasad were already waiting, he took his place next to them.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Transporter room one - 1155

A wry smile touched the corner of the Captain's mouth. "All right, gentlemen - it's showtime." He continued with unnecessary advice. "Remember to show our best manners; Lieutenant Berk, I want the security detail for each ambassador to feel like an escort, not a warden."

"Aye, sir, no escorting the guests straight to the brig then." Mathias responded with a smile in kind, the Captains relaxed demeanour helping Mathias to feel a little more at ease.

The transporter chief, a Vulcan, looked up from the transporter console which faintly chimed, "We have contact from Starbase one eighteen, Captain. They are requesting permission for two to beam aboard."

"Our guests are right on time, Mister Tolaris. Permission granted, please beam them aboard." said the captain in response.

The transporter technician nodded. "Order acknowledged, Captain. Energizing now."

The tell tale hum of the transporter cycling filled Mathias' ears and starting out as a faint shimmer, two humanoids materialized on the pad in front of them alongside various cases and trunks, the ambassador's luggage.

Drake took a step forward and bowed as the ambassadors stepped off the transporter platform. "Ambassador Threel, Ambassador D'lar - on behalf of the United Federation of Planets, I hereby welcome you aboard the USS Peregrine. You met my Executive Officer, Lieutenant Zai, this morning. Please allow me to introduce you to my Chief of Operations, Lieutenant Lasad, as well as my Chief Tactical Officer, Lieutenant Berk." Drake indicated each in turn before continuing. Mathias nodded when the Captain got to him, making eye contact with each ambassador in turn.

"Lieutenant Lasad has personally tended to your quarters to assure that they are as comfortable as we can make them, though if you require anything whatsoever, you have only to ask. Lieutenant Berk will be providing each of you with your own personal bodyguards for the duration of your stay; they will serve as escorts and personal security for you at all times."

Ambassador D'lar chuckled slightly. "You mean, Captain, that you are assigning someone to keep an eye on us while we are on board, to keep us out of trouble, yes?"

"Well at least we know where one of them stands" Mathias kept to himself.

The Captain had a surprised look an his face, likely taken aback by the ambassador's honesty. "And by doing so, you can of course give lip service towards protecting us from one another." Threel cast a sideways glance at D'lar.

The Kuldar ambassador grinned widely. "Do not apologize, Captain. Were I in your place, I would do the same - but not be so polite about it."

Now we know where they both stand, both of these ambassadors have keen tactical minds it appears. We'll keep a close eye on them both I think, they were expecting this sort of welcome.

The Rytain ambassador nodded in agreement. "Indeed. I would not begrudge you your duty. Show us to our quarters, please."

"Ambassadors, this way please." Mathias said, with a shallow bow and gesturing to the transporter room doors.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 1030

Mathias glanced at the Chronometre at tactical, he'd been on the bridge for the better part of an hour, in which he'd finally had the opportunity to meet his XO and gotten to know one other person on his team, Ensign Blackmon, who he had gotten on reasonably well so far, he had relied on her knowledge of the ship heavily in drawing up some of the security plans. There wasn't all that much that he could get done up on the bridge and if he made it back to his office now he could skim everything he and Reid had put together before the staff meeting.

"Ensign, I'll leave you to it." Signing out of the tactical console and stepping aside to allow Blackmon to take over.

"Aye, sir" she responded smartly.

With that he made his way to the turbolift.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, CTO's Office - 1050

(OCC Opportunity for Reid and Berk to have a quick meeting before the meeting of you'd like.)

Having read over nothing but security briefs and security plans the better part of the morning, Mathias felt as if the text from the screen in front of him mind as well have been etched into his eyes. Mathias grabbed the PADD on his desk the security plans and contingencies onto a PADD and locked his terminal, the screen winking out into darkness. In a little over an hour these plans were going to be put to the test, if anything went wrong the buck stopped with him. PADD in hand Mathias left his office as he walked he tapped his communicator.

Mathias got up and made for the door, which swished silently as he approached flooding the now darkened office once again.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captain's Mess - 1055

It was only a short hop from his office to the mess hall, and having spent the better part of the day before wandering the ship's corridor he was feeling better about navigating the narrow halls of his new posting. He had arrived around the same time as the rest of the senior staff and he placed his PADD on the table next to Lieutenant Zai and walked to the Replicator to fetch something for Lunch.

"Kase Spätzle with Pork Crackling and Sauerkraut." Mathias said, leaning against the replicator and scanning the room, putting faces to names and ranks from personal files. The computer chimed and his meal materialised, Mathias grabbed the bowl and went back to his seat.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captains Mess - 1100

The meeting began in earnest once everyone had grabbed something to eat. The Captain scanned the room as he spoke.

"First of all, as everyone is well aware, we have had some rather significant changes here aboard the Peregrine. Before we go any further, I would like to officially welcome Lieutenant Dio Lasad, our new Chief of Operations. Next up is Lieutenant Mathias Berk, our new Chief Tactical Officer. Last, but not least, is Doctor Louise Moore, our new Chief Medical Officer. Finally, please note that Lieutenant Lasad will also be filling the role of our new Second Officer. Please make them all feel welcome; I am certain that we will manage any possible bumps in the road as we learn to mesh together in the pursuit of our shared duty." The Captain paused, clearing his throat.

****
The Captain turned to Mathias "Lieutenant Berk, aside from the security concerns on the ambassadors, I want you to further research the capabilities of the Kuldar and Rytain vessels, any known battle tactics they may employ, that sort of thing. I gave this task to Lieutenant Rockastansky yesterday; you may want to confer with your aTAC to see what has been discovered. I want us fully prepared in the event that this does devolve into shooting."

Mathias nodded in agreement "Aye sir, I have our preparations here." Passing the PADD to the captain as he spoke. "And Lt. Reid has passed along both him and Lieutenant Rockastansky have to date, I've only had enough time give it a glance over. I expect I'll have a tactical plan in place before we cross into the Gamera system."

(OCC I'm not going to rehash the whole meeting but if anyone has any responses to anything thing I've said I can edit accordingly.)

I don't think we need to change them, Berk trusts Reid to put together a plan and they can make changes collaboratively, this is sort of Berk's chance to see how Reid works and for Berk some general house keeping done as well as meet his team and the like. Berk has some ideas (arming engineering crews, containment fields and the like) that he wants to bounce of Reid as well.
