From what little I know of 3rd edition would I be correct in thinking that undead don't take damage from sneak attacks?

Also, are there any handy chandeliers or rafters for Vyarp to clamber up if he wanted to skip the line and hurry upstairs?

Topic: For Whom the Bell Tolls Q&A
Subject: Replied to Stryke by PM. I'm not just ignoring him, honest...

Basically, we’ve got a couple of options for this week’s game:

1. We rule that you all (somehow) made it out of Thalgrim’s stronghold alive.

The assumption here will be that you fled at the next possible opportunity and probably evaded a few orcish warbands on the way back. As Caer Hwarnsvalon isn’t under any immediate threat, you’ll be free to escort the caravan back south to Bridhvale and we can pick things up from there (unless there’s anything else you’d like to do in the mountains first).

Here’s the small print:

- As things stand, your characters don’t actually know whether Thalgrim’s dead or not. He may very well be, after all surely no one could take that much punishment and survive (he was at -14 at the end of the adventure). But you don’t *know* for sure.
- As things stand, your horses are currently loose in the woods. It seems unlikely that you’d have the time to mount a search for them on the way out. The exception here will be anyone who didn’t actually tell me they were bringing their horse along in the first place (Jozan1 and Stryke).
- The chest’s currently lodged in a tree in the woods. Again, it seems unlikely that you’d have the space to retrieve it on the way out.

2. Alternatively, if any of these points are particularly important to you we can just pick things up from where we left off last Friday. I’ve still got your current status saved on my computer somewhere.

(And if anyone particularly cares…)

Pretty sure that last week's game was my worst one yet. Basically, I screwed up at the planning stage and was too tired on the night to improvise properly.

The original plan was that if you decided to rest somewhere near the mountain without a very sound plan then Thalgrim’s wolves would try to hound you back through the mountains. I had a few encounters worked out, which we should hopefully get the chance to use again at some point. Then I realised that this would be the opening game for at least one new player and chickened out. What you got was a couple of planned encounters and a couple more which were pretty much off the top of my head. The next game should be better or I’m hanging up my DMing badge.

Thanks. Now that my exams are finally out of the way (only one paper to go this term) I should finally have the time to start posting a bit more often.

Bryson only really left the church to stretch his legs and get some air, and will probably be quite conscious that people were waiting for him to get back. I’ll edit it if you’d prefer but he’s not really the type to go poking around in other peoples’ lives any more than he has to.

Out of interest, what’s the layout of the church? I was able to find their website but it didn’t have too much information on size or escape routes.

Topic: Feeding The Undead
Subject: What's that? A domestic?

His shoes drumming a neat staccato along the pavement, Bryson paused briefly in astonishment to take in the spectacle provided. The minister wasn’t quite sure exactly what he’d expected to find: an old lady being carried downstairs on a stretcher with a broken hip perhaps, or two cars enmeshed together after an unfortunate collision. A regrettable accident no doubt, which could be transcribed neatly in the prayers’ section of next week’s pew sheets, along with a warm entreaty for those involved to make a speedy recovery in God’s sight.

The scene which greeted his incredulous eyes, however, was something he’d have been more ready to find somewhere out in the projects back in Atlanta. A young couple were engaged in a heated argument, and the man had obviously been stabbed as a steady trickle of blood snaked from a gash in his arm to stain his shirt and trousers. For an instant John was tempted to approach the pair, but quickly thought better of it: what could he possibly say? In any case, the police and ambulance services obviously had the situation under control and would, no doubt, want to move the pair on as soon as possible.

The minister shrugged slightly and looked away, suddenly conscious that he’d been staring at the scene somewhat longer than was polite. He’d still have a good dozen parishioners waiting to talk to him over coffee, and no doubt his absence must seem odd enough already. Once that familiar ritual was completed, he head home, perhaps grab a takeaway on the way from that new Indian place that had just opened around the corner, and watch a few reruns on Sky. Bryson yawned slightly, readjusting his tie as he stepped back inside the church, it had been a long enough day already and he’d been feeling a bit out of sorts lately, probably as a consequence of a few too many restless nights. Perhaps the doctor could proscribe him something a bit stronger at his next check up? Forcing his body to relax, affixing another tired grin on his face, the Minister strode back through the church doors. He’d remember the pair in his prayers tonight, that much he could do for them at least, but beyond that, he was content enough to leave the matter in God’s hands. And now it was time for some coffee.

OOC: Chances are, Bryson wouldn’t even make it as far as the house. The domestic disturbance on the way would probably be quite enough, given that he’s just out to get a breath of fresh air anyway.

Subject: Sounds like a plan

If everyone could get their spell choices to me at some point before play starts then that would be great. I can’t guarantee that you’ll have the chance to use them, though… That will depend on some of the choices you make IC.

I’ve been thinking about allowing your characters a slight boon for tonight’s game.

According to the rules you need to sleep uninterrupted for a full night before you can start regaining spells (I think the same applies in 3rd edition).

I’m willing to tweak this rule slightly for the next adventure. With the benefit of a few hours’ sleep your characters might be able to recoup a couple of their spell slots.

If these spells are used then they’ll count against the number you’ll be able to cast for the following day. A full night’s rest will still allow a character to recover their full daily allowance.

If this one comes into play at all then it will just be on a trial run. Depending on whether it works the way I want it to or not it might or might not be an advantage that you can rely on it the future.

Okay then, I’ve added Stryke’s character to the party roster and taken off everyone who isn’t currently playing. Someone from the Dragonsfoot boards has also told me that they’re definitely interested in joining the group… not sure if they’ll be able to make it this Friday though.

If anyone would like to tell me what you’re actually doing tomorrow then more power to you.

I’m guessing that it’s either going to boil down to option 1 or 2 on the list above. If not, then I’ve probably got enough notes to wing it.

Subject: Resting

That’s one of the things I’ve been trying to ask you over the last week…

As I see things, here are your choices.

1. Heading on to kill Thalgrim straight away.
2. Trying to find somewhere to rest overnight and then heading on to kill Thalgrim.
3. Heading back to the dwarves.
4. Any other option.

Finding somewhere safe to rest in the caves or nearby might be problematic… since the orcs are bound to notice that their shaman’s missing at some point soon. You've also left your horses tethered outside. On the other hand, the rewards might be worth it.

So if you want to rest then just let me know what you’re doing. I’ll decide whether you’re discovered or not and we can start the adventure from there.

To recap, here are the stats I've got for you all at the moment. You'll also have the magic items in your inventory (on the first page) to fall back on. If you do decide to head straight on and fight Thalgrim then it might be worth burning a few healing potions at least.

Hit Points:

Arys: 9/40, Emmerus: 39/45, Isilifeline: 40/40, Joshua: -3/20 [stabilised], Thordalf: 19/20, Valendara: 22/22, Vanima: 30/32

Spells Left:

Emmerus:

Cure Light Wounds
Chant
Flame Blade
Call Lightning
Dispel Magic

Valendara:

Charm Person
Blindness
Aid
Hold Person

Vanima:

… and I’ll write up the adventure.

Any new characters would need to start off separately, but hopefully you should be able to meet up relatively quickly. I’m fairly sure that Vanima was with you last time… didn’t she fireball the trolls?

Stryke’s going to be joining us with a gnomish bard this Friday. We might also have another player or two (a couple of people have responded to the ad I posted on Dragonsfoot yesterday) but I haven’t heard anything definite.

That’s great, glad to hear you’ll be able to make it.

Also, we’re going to have at least one (and possibly two) new players joining us this Friday. I’ll try to write them both plot hooks to where you are at the moment over the next couple of days.

So… if anyone would prefer to stick around in the caves and finish off Thalgrim then please just let me know. If not, I’ll go with the responses I’ve had so far and assume that you’re all heading back to Caer Hwarnsvalon.

Did you want to try to rest in (or near) the caves overnight then?

Since we haven’t actually run the adventure yet, the polls are still open from last week. The only other person I’ve heard back from so far is Kaelyn.

As far as I can tell, here are your options. I’m happy to run the next adventure either way.

1. Head straight on and kill Thalgrim before the alarm can be raised.
2. Try to find somewhere to rest overnight, replenish your spells and then head back into the mountain.
3. Head back to Caer Hwarnsvalon to rest and resupply.
4. Cut your losses and head back south to Bridhvale.
5. Any other option you might think of.

Oh, and is everyone okay with starting at 9 again this Friday? We can keep going with 10 if you'd prefer.

Topic: Feeding The Undead
Subject: Fond farewells

Positioning himself neatly by the church’s main exit, at the end of a corridor between the spare pew bibles and the church notice board, Father Bryson settled in to wait. A cool breeze was stirring through the open doorway behind him, rustling the leaflets on the bulletin board at his side and chasing a few stray leaves across the courtyard outside. In the distance the angry screeching of police and ambulance sirens cut shrilly through the night air and the minister, almost subconsciously, reached up to adjust the hearing aid coiled in his left ear, his interest piqued slightly at this latter disturbance.

This had become something of a familiar ritual for Bryson, no less so than the church service itself, and he was content to shake hands and make small talk with each departing parishioner in turn. He smiled slightly at the familiar sight of Mrs. Randerville, leading the procession out of the main church hall as usual, giving the old woman as much attention as he was able between each family as they made their exit. It wasn’t really the time to hold a conversation, but Bryson did the best he could without ignoring the rest of his churchgoers. He made a mental note to call by and visit Mrs. Johanson at some point over the next couple of days, he suspected that she could use the company, and if she really had been involved in the accident outside then he’d want to include her in next Sunday’s prayers. Perhaps it might be best to phone her tomorrow lunchtime…before the Bible study group started.

“Father Bryson.”

John glanced up, disturbed from his mental book-keeping. “Alan,” he replied, warmly enough, returning the guest speaker’s handshake with a firm grip of his own. “It was a real pleasure to have you along tonight.”

In all honesty his reaction to the guest minister had been rather more mixed. The sermon had grated with him slightly, perhaps more than he was willing to admit, but it was apparent that the other church-goers shared few of his misgivings. In any event, Father Moore seemed sincere enough and Bryson was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“I want to thank you for having me,” Alan went on. “Many people have taken up your offer of donuts and coffee and remain inside. Do you do this every Sunday Evening? The refreshments that is.”

“On the first Sunday of each month,” Bryson replied, “It used to be more of a morning thing when I first moved up here, but I’ve found it helpful getting to know some of the evening crowd a bit better.”

“Wonder what’s going on there...”

“I was just wondering the same thing,” the minister paused, finally reaching a decision. “Tell you what, I’ll just head out and check. If the road’s closed then I’d imagine that a few people might want to make alternate travel arrangements home this evening.”

The conversation was already straining slightly at Bryson’s nerves. Perhaps he could chalk it down to a few too many nights’ missed sleep over the last week, perhaps it was just nerves. Either way, he needed space and this seemed as good an opportunity as any other. In a couple of minutes he step back inside, pour himself a cup of coffee and sit down to chat with some of his churchgoers about how their kids were doing at college, about their respective vacation plans for the coming year. In the meantime, he needed a breath of fresh air. Fighting back the urge to light up a cigarette, the minister set off down Mainstreet at a brisk pace towards the scene of the disturbance. A few months back he used to jog past here each morning and Bryson reminded himself to get back in the habit soon, it would be a good way to burn off the tension if nothing else.

Would it be better to just cancel tonight’s game now? I’ve been getting quite run down over the last couple of days as well (between a fever and an essay deadline, not all that good a combination) and could really use the rest as well. That said, sounds like some of you have crazy sleep patterns!

We can pick up next Friday, for everyone who’s still interested, and keep going from there. The next adventure will be the beginnings of the siege of Caer Hwarnsvalon and it would be great to see as many of you along as possible.

Brianna, I think we’ve allocated your bonus NWPs already. As things stand, you’ve got four languages and seven other proficiencies, for a total of eleven (Herbalism costs two). If I’ve missed anything or you’d like to swap any around then that’s fine, just let me know.
