That should read Friday.

Wednesday's when my last tabletop game ran.

So that makes…

  • Admiral [Class/ Race]

  • Drakar: [Class/ Race]

  • Kaelyn: [Human Cleric]

I’m already statting up a character for Kaelyn. Anyone else who’d like to play just say the word and I’ll add you to the list.

If anyone who'd like me to stat a character up for them for the Friday night session could let me know by 5 pm GMT tomorrow then it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, as long as I've got it before the game everything's fine.

That’s two already.

Kaelyn, I’m guessing that would be 3 pm your time (it’s about 8:30 pm here at the moment).

In case I’ve got that wrong somehow here’s a link showing how the different time zones break down. I’m in the London time zone with the rest of the UK.

By now most of you have seen the news about Gary Gygax.

I suggest that as a way of honoring Gary Gygax we have a "GaryCon" across the globe this Friday and Saturday night.

By "We" - I mean every gamer possible who plays RPGs. Everywhere.

All of us play either Dungeons & Dragons this Friday and Saturday night

-OR-

We play the RPG rules system of our choice - but we do a typical D&D-type dungeon crawl. ...either Friday or Saturday night.

Everywhere....every city or town possible.

Please share this idea with your gaming friends, and let's make this a big, global event in Gary’s memory.

I read the above post on rpg.net (http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=382871) and thought it could be a nice touch to start a game of our own up here for GaryCon.

So… I’d like to run an old-school D&D adventure at the inn this Friday and Saturday night. It would be great to have as many of you along as possible.

  • The game will be run in chat, from 10 pm to 3 am GMT this Friday and Saturday night. (Which I’m guessing will be from 5 pm to 10 pm for most American innmates).

  • The game will primarily be a dungeon-crawl (as far as I can remember, most of the really old adventures were), but rest assured there will be plenty of opportunities for roleplay.

  • Don’t worry if you’re only able to make one of the two sessions, we can either write your character out after the first evening or introduce you to the party at the start of the Saturday night session.

  • Ideally, I‘d like to run this in AD&D [2nd ed.], which is probably about as old-school as I can go without pushing it. If you’d like to play but don‘t know 2nd ed. then I can either just create a character for you or you can stat one up for 3.0 or 3.5 and I’ll convert them across.

  • Characters should be 3rd level, dividing 70 points between their stats.

  • Take maximum Hit Points at first level, average for every level after that

  • It would be really helpful if everyone who’s interested in playing for a session could send me their character sheets at least an hour before the game starts.

Hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Flavour text to follow once I have some idea of interest.

Eh, I wasn’t aware that alcohol was all that cheap in Norway either. From what I’ve heard from friends who’ve holidayed there it’s insanely over-taxed and over-regulated over there as well.

Skari-Dono, could I buy a couple more Numina? Specifically, I’d like to buy Blast ( Book of Spirits, p.138 ) to represent Hiram targeting enemies with blasts of freezing cold or broken glass in classic horror movie style and then Savant: Blast ( Book of Spirits, p. 146 ) to boost my dice pool to 10. From what you decided the last time I brought the subject up (7 XP for each Spirit Numina) that should cost a total of 14 XP.

EDIT: That should read p. 138. Not a smiley.

TBH I was originally thinking of people who were daydreaming at the time or who might otherwisw have a weak grasp on reality. That said, it's not exactly essential to the Numina.

That just sounded really odd to me… you’d expect to pay about £5-£10 in the UK and less in most parts of Europe.

Anyhow, I thought I put in something about being able to use Dream Thief on targets who were still awake (albeit at a few dice penalty) when I wrote it up. If that part got taken out in your edit then I’ll redo my post.

Someone I was talking to last night told me an anecdote which basically revolved around having been charged £90 (about 120 Euros) for two Gin and Tonics while on holiday in Iceland.

I’m curious… does that sound about right? If so, why is alcohol so expensive in your country?

Things were becoming a great deal more complicated that Hiram had originally allowed for. Insofar as he had even taken the time to envisage a chain of events the ghost had allowed that he might be called upon for a month or two to ensure that his patient enjoyed a reasonable amount of sleep and to keep predators like Einhart at a safe distance, working with the other doctors to resolve whatever deep-set anxieties had been engendered by her brothers’ murder until she could be released with a clean bill of mental health. With the job completed to his satisfaction, and his professional ability thus vindicated, the spectre could return to business as usual, or perhaps settle into a brief period of dormancy while his energies replenished themselves.

It had become obvious that nothing was going to be resolved that easily and, for the first time, Hiram began to doubt that the battle was actually worth fighting. Beings seemingly more powerful than himself- first the dream-beast and now this more recent interloper- also possessed an interest in the girl, jeopardising any hope of recovery or even temporary release, and whilst he possessed the means to fight the creatures off it was inevitable that his own energy reserves would soon be exhausted in the process. Continuing past that point- which by the ghost’s own estimation would be reached within the next twenty-four hours- would require that he begin feeding from the rest of the hospital’s patients and staff- harming and possibly even killing them in the process- in order to sustain a struggle which brought little benefit even to the one patient on whose behalf it had been initiated. Common sense dictated that he cut his losses, retreating back into the hospital’s woodwork- perhaps for a year, perhaps for a decade- until his strength recovered and the recent epidemic of supernatural intrusions resolved itself. No doubt there would be much the same battles to fight when he reawakened: patients to heal, emergencies to resolve, wrongdoers to punish, a hospital to monitor and a town full of life beyond it for when any further entertainment became desirable. He had no particular attachment to this present age.

And yet… when it came down to it, the prospect of giving up so easily grated a little too much, was anathema to the mantle he had assumed for himself. At a fundamental level Hiram still imagined himself to be a doctor and custodian of the hospital, and it would ill become either role to abandon those in his charge, without at least some semblance of a fight. His pride was at stake and the spectre found himself hard pressed to relinquish the domain he had built up for himself into the hands of the rash of more recent intruders who had imposed themselves upon him.

“Who won’t let your dreams stop?” Hiram asked in a slightly detached tone, tinged with a deep-set frustration at the whole affair. “The burnt ghost or the dream-beast I fought earlier? Really, anything you could tell me about either of these apparitions would be most helpful at this point.” A most unwelcome thought had just occurred to the spectre: if the monsters from Annabell's dreams were being progressively drawn to the hospital then it could not be too much longer before the place was overrun. However burdensome it might seem he would have little choice but to try to nip these incursions in the bud before the problem became impossible to manage.

OOC: Rejigged the second half of my post as requested. If Annabell’s not talking then he’ll go and bother some of the other insomniacs (as I recall from your first post, there’s a lounge somewhere for them all).

Hiram’s Willpower has taken a hit (from “Resolute” to “Timid”) and I’m playing it out.

Subject: Slightly off topic

Eh, D&D has always had some seriously odd monster ideas.

“Giant Beaver” was apparently an actual canon monster back in 1st ed. along with the “Duckbunny”, “Giant Vampire Frog” and “Flail Snail”.

Follow the link below if you don’t believe me:

http://www.headinjurytheater.com/article73.htm

The strange thing is how many of these oddball ideas have actually worked and been accepted into gaming mythology. (I’m thinking more of things like the “Beholder” and “Owlbear” here.)

Topic: What Dreams Become
Subject: Oh, you want to leave then?

Hiram let out a quiet sigh of exasperation as Doctor Mullins turned and ran, a sharp exhalation of breath from the possessed security guard’s mouth. Whilst the quite natural human fear of the supernatural his appearance evoked among the hospital’s visitors and staff normally served his purposes perfectly well, one would have thought that both the physical appearance he had taken and his general demeanour upon manifestation had been non-threatening enough? Still, Doctor Mullins had at least stayed long enough to hear him out, and thus informed of the nature of his activities within the hospital grounds could choose either to rationalise the encounter and continue as before, or accept his existence and acknowledge the help he was offering. The spectre hoped that she would make no attempt to quit the hospital, in which case it might be necessary to make an excursion and retrieve her, the asylum could not afford the loss of the doctor of her calibre at present. Still, in either case, the decision was hers to make, and her departure did at least afford him the chance to put a few more questions to his patient.

Permitting the apparition which hovered over the possessed guard’s head to dissipate, he turned back to approach his patient. “Annabell. It’s me, Hiram.” the ghost informed her, crouching beside the girl where she lay huddled in the room’s corner. “What has happened here? Has someone hurt you?” Something had obviously shaken the girl up quite badly and, if he’d been forced to hazard a guess, Hiram would have suspected this had something to do with the intruder that had imposed itself upon his hospital earlier that morning- in which case he might be forced to bring matters to a head earlier than he’d originally intended. The questions he’d originally intended to ask, it seemed, would have to wait.

OOC: As far as Hiram can tell, has she been physically harmed in any way or is she just scared?

Topic: Curse of the Tax Season
Subject: That sucks, but...

Do the Republican Party even have any direct control over the IRS? My understanding of the matter (of course, I’m writing as an ignorant foreigner here ) was that the President appoints a Commissioner to serve a fixed term every five years and that from that point the IRS pretty much goes on to do its own thing, deciding most of its rulings internally. Most of the demands for serious overhaul I’ve heard have come from some of the more hard-core conservative and libertarian groups… most of which fall more towards the Republican side of the political spectrum anyway.

Also, I don’t really understand the problem with tax cuts benefiting the rich. Overall, the top quarter of American tax payers contribute a higher percentage of total tax revenues than they did when Bush took office, while the tax contribution of the bottom 40% has actually fallen. If you were to, say, cut taxes by 10% across the board then of course the people who paid the most in the first place will receive the most in actual dollars- but as long as the overall percentages remain the same I can’t see that the system’s really discriminating in their favour overall. For the record, I’m currently paying my way through university, so you can guess how much I’m making at the moment.

Hiram was struck again by a surge of all-too familiar irritation. After a long, exhausting day, and sleepless, brutal night, the last ebbs of his patience were already running dry. The temptation to feed was almost overpowering, to remove the obstacle in his wake with one sudden, swift burst of violence and replenish the embers of his dead, empty shell in the process with the warmth of stolen life. He could leave Eve Mullins crumpled, unconscious, dead even and none but himself would be any the wiser… and then what? Destroy one of the few doctors who actually shared, and even surpassed, his care for the hospital’s patients? Leave one of his guards, a man with a family to support no less, facing charges of assault- murder even- when he was discovered next to the doctor's smothered body? The thought left a bitter taste in the spectre’s mouth. No, he promised himself, he would feast soon and feast well- but now was not the place. A more worthy victim must be chosen: one who had committed some sort of tangible trespass against the hospital’s sanctity and whose removal would serve the old place he was sworn to protect, not merely his own exhaustion and unnatural hunger.

Which left conciliation as his only recourse in dealing with the matter at hand. Obviously, he was a less convincing liar than he had thought, and the easiest, simplest way of dealing with the matter at hand would be to simply come clean. More than that, he was tired of dissembling and, after all, maybe Doctor Mullins deserved to know the truth behind her hospital’s success.

As the spectre willed itself to reappear, its tired remains hastened to obey. Tendrils of white, foggy vapour spewed forth from Tom Bradley’s nostrils, ears and mouth, gathering in a cloud above the possessed security guard's head until Hiram had taken form once more. The guise of the genial, middle-aged man in the doctor’s coat hovered patiently in mid air, and the apparition's mouth opened and closed emptily, but the voice that issued forth came from Tom Bradley’s own mouth. The man twitched uneasily as the phantom spoke through him, his lips forming about the words of the ghost's tired intonation, accented by the alien tones of a university English a near century deceased.

“Doctor Mullins,” the spectre began, in an almost apologetic tone, “I must confess that Tom Bradley is not at home right now. And, much as it might gall me to admit it, Doctor Einhart is not to blame here either. You’ve been working at the hospital for quite some time now, and I’m sure you’ve noticed that things operate a little differently around here. You may recall events a few months past, when Ben Edwards had a coronary arrest and something guided you down two floors to save his life. You may have noticed that the sort of staff members inclined to abuse or steal from the patients in their care don’t tend to stay long. I’ve been watching over this place for quite some time now and, while your concern for your patient’s well being does you credit, I can assure you, the girl is quite safe with me.”

“Now, if you would prefer to leave, I've no intention of stopping you. Believe me, I'm quite willing to be civilized here. Should you wish, I will even permit you to take Tom Bradley with you when you go. I, meanwhile, will stay here and talk to my patient. Someone, or something, has obviously terrified her, and I must know what has transpired so that due action can be taken. I can assure you that, unlike Tom Bradley, I’m perfectly well qualified for the job.”

“Alternatively, if you require further evidence that my intentions are altogether amicable, then, please, take a seat and join us. By all means, stay and see for yourself that I mean your patient no harm whatsoever.”

Subject: Downward Spiral

“Tom, you were never a good liar and I can’t say you have improved much. That new head doctor may think he knows stuff, but if he is letting guards do a doctor’s work he belongs in a straight jacket himself. I’ve been working with this girl since this morning, and I haven’t made any progress since then. If you think I am going to let you stay here and make it worse, you’re sadly mistaken.”

Again, Hiram was struck by a sudden twinge of exasperation. His inability to fault the way Eve was doing her job as a doctor didn’t much help matters- he probably wouldn’t have allowed an untrained security guard access to his patients either. Still, whether she knew it or not, the fact of the matter was that he was a skilled professional in his own right and his work here was at least as important as her own and the ghost had little intention of permitting itself to be sidetracked.

“Hiram,” Annabell whispered, and the phantom was hit by a fresh wave of paternal concern. Something had hurt the girl, and the dead psychologist was forced to fight down the urge to comfort her, to move heaven and earth to set matters to rights and destroy whoever- or whatever- had terrified her.

Handing the official notice Einhart had signed over to the doctor, the ghost phrased a second fabrication, feigning a smile and an expression of incredulousness. “I know,” he replied, “I couldn’t believe it either. Read the note if you don’t believe me, or better yet call Doctor Einhart yourself. He was quite insistent that I do as he instructed, and I like this job, so it didn’t seem wise to refuse.”

Hiram hoped she would simply swallow the lie and move on: he had no particular desire to harm any of his doctors for simply doing their jobs, though he had little doubt that he would be willing to do so if she forced the issue. No doubt this must all seem terribly irregular, and, if presented with similar circumstances, Hiram would have been wary himself, but the fact of the matter was that he had official permission and Doctor Mullins had no further right to stand in his way.

Hiram’s patience had already been worn paper thin, his energies bled to the point of exhaustion by the past day’s exertion. A temptation was emerging in some part of the spectre’s fevered brain to bring the issue to a head, revealing his form in all its unnatural horror and feasting upon the doctor’s warm breath until she blacked out or fled in terror. Had he still been capable of sensation then he would have had no doubt that his form was bitterly cold, chilled by the frozen earth of a grave some seven decades closed. Doctor Mullins could no doubt spare him a little, the voice nagged, and the stolen warmth would reinvigorate his vital energies, leaving him stronger and better prepared for the struggle ahead. Angrily, the phantom fought the impulse down, there was no crime to be punished here and he refused to set a dangerous precedent by allowing himself to overstep the bounds of the role he had decided for himself, but in truth his patience was nearing its end. Either Eve Mullins would yield to the hospital’s authority and step aside, or the hungry spectre would take action to remove the decision from her hands.

Actually, I wasn’t planning to play Hiram any differently at all. As far as I’m concerned he’s already mentally unstable in at least two areas and has been since the game began.

As the nwod has rules to represent insanity I thought it could be handy to represent this with Derangements attached to the two Morality dots he lost before play. That said, if you disagree then it’s not really all that big a deal for me, as I don’t actually need “Fixation: Hospital” written on my character sheet to play a character who’s obsessed with maintaining the memory of his hospital.

Subject: Hmm...

Personally, I've never been that big a fan of elven and dawrven names along the "Axebeard"/ "Silverbough" model... but each to their own.

If you're looking for lists of human names then you might find these sites of interest.

http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/
http://www.behindthename.com/

The first website links to lists of real world Medieval names, the second to modern names by country (pus a few odd categories to mythological and ancient names). I've used both sites before now to generate names for NPCs and other stock characters.

One other thought: why not let users specify the sort of human name they want to generate by culture? (So you'd have "Human- Germanic" and "Human- Celtic" along with "Elven" and "Dwarven" as categories). Otherwise you might end up with some quite odd cross-cultural first-name/ last-name combinations.
