We don’t even seem to be in the top 100 at the moment.

Also, very few of the top sites seem to have more than about 10 votes at the moment. So, we should be able to bag a high rank if just a dozen or so more people vote over the next couple of days.

Since you’ve already rolled the dice (and we might not have taken the zombie down otherwise) I’m happy to just let things stand.

If it’s okay I’d like to have at least the option of controlling Bryson’s firepower in future encounters. Here's guessing that ammunition will be in quite short supply for this game and I'd like to make the most of it.

Oh, and if Tiann really does have a Salami bulging out of his pocket then there’s no way he’d be sitting behind Bryson anyway.

Subject: Set to go

"I am Thascius Cornelius Germanicus, centurion of the Empire and leader of the Cornelius Squad. I will join the two of you in the drinking of wine, but only if you will accept my offer to do so in my current home."

Returned the centurion’s invitation with a broad grin, the veteran’s right arm snapped up almost of its own volition in a well-practiced military salute, the traditional soldiers’ greeting.

Surprisingly enough, the emotion wasn’t feigned: on appearances so far he felt a genuine respect for the man, who’d handled a potentially difficult job with dignity and aplomb. And had circumstances been different the prospect of an evening spent sharing exaggerated old war stories over a pitcher or two of wine would have seemed by no means an unappealing one.

It was perhaps unfortunate for them both then that the man Deodatus, a congenial alcoholic chaffing under the strain and tedium of civilian life, was dead if unburied. And the hungry revenant who stood in his boots wasn’t much minded to weigh the dishonour of betraying a former brother-in-arms against the altogether more pressing need of putting bread on its children’s table for another week. No, he’d have the book or its whereabouts and be out again by daybreak and the ties of mortal comradeship be damned.

“Gnaeus Sertorius,” the vampire lied gruffly, extending his hand as he named a former comrade in arms who’d died in a knife fight last spring. No sense in using his real name, it could spell trouble later. “Served in the Second Cohort of the Fifth, at Chrysopolis and on the Danube.” Gods knew, that much was true enough, and he had the scars to prove it.

Almost as an afterthought, he flipped a coin onto the table beside him, which landed face-up amidst the spray of spilled wine and a few stray shards of broken pottery, to pay for the cost of the damage. He used this place often enough that it wasn’t worth wearing thin on his welcome for a little loose change. Besides which, he should have coin enough once the night’s work was done and the book safe in the hands of Manius’ mysterious client.

Just wondering if you’d decided on any more information for this game?

I’ve got a couple of exams coming up in the New Year so, if it’s possible, I’d prefer to start writing up a character at some point soon. If you’re still working things out then that’s fine, but I’m unlikely to be able to put as much time into fleshing a character out a couple of weeks from now as I would be over the holidays.

What happened to Bryson’s other three bullets?

By my count he should have fired one into the zombie’s chest in my last post, and another into its head at the end of yours.

If it’s just that you just need him to end up with a nearly unloaded weapon for dramatic purposes then that’s fine with me, but otherwise I’m wondering where all of his ammunition got to.

Great posts, btw. I’ll start working on one of my own over the next few days. Admiral, will Tiaan be jumping into Bryson’s car or following in his own?

Hope you all have a great New Year, and looking forward to continuing this one in 2009.

Update?

Oh, and has anyone else seen this ?

I’m forced to conclude that a Viking-era zombie game (preferably played as survival horror, not heroic fantasy) would be awesome.

I’m tentatively thinking of playing a mage/ thief or maybe just a single-classed thief type (don’t worry, a full background’s in the works). I'm not particularly interested in playing a paladin, so if someone else would like that spot then feel free.

Rystefn K’ryll, if you’d like to create characters with a joint background then I’d be interested.

I’m already got a couple of ideas in mind that could work well as a dual concept, or we could use one of yours if you’d prefer.

As far as I’m aware only humans can be paladins in 2nd ed.

But: Elves, Dwarves, Halflings and Saurials (and probably a few others I've forgotten about) all got their own kits that basically allowed for racial variants.

I’ve be looking for a new AD&D game for a while, if you’re still looking for players then I’d absolutely be interested.

Sounds like you’ve got a great group of players gathered as well.

Are you allowing kits and material from Skills & Powers material for this one, or just the options from the Players Handbook?

Here’s Take 2:

Spend a bit of time about town first, socialising with people and scouting out the lie of the land. You’ll probably want to adopt a group persona for this to avoid drawing too much attention to yourselves. And use this as a time to rack up as many brownie points with the local townsfolk as possible.

Identify the people in your way (current mayor and city councillors etc) along with anyone who seems likely to cause you problems later on and set about destroying them as discreetly as possible. A magic-user with charm and invisibility spells could prove quite handy here, as could a skilled thief. Plant evidence of corruption at the mayor’s office, charm/brainwash a few children at the orphanage to claim that the local paladin molested them and so on. If there’s a way to circumvent “Detect Lie” and similar spells in 3.5 then it could come in really handy here.

I’d be torn between keeping a low profile to avoid drawing attention to yourselves at this stage, and posing unabashedly as a group of moral crusaders exposing the indecency and corruption of the ruling establishment (which could make any attempts to “expose” your group highly problematic). The long-term game plan should be racking up sufficient renown in the area that your group seem the obvious choice to fill the shoes of the people that they’re taking down.

Subject: So, your goal’s just to destroy the town?

If so, then you might be better off going after the things that make life there viable, rather than picking off its inhabitants one by one. Poison the wells, kill off their livestock and use fire elementals to destroy as much of the town’s infrastructure as possible at no risk to yourselves.

Alternatively, if reinforcements seem likely, you might just want to destroy it all in a single assault. It might be worth investing in builds or magic items that will allow your characters to just keep killing and blitz the place in a session or two.

Do “vampiric” rings and weapons still exist in 3.5? (If I remember correctly they were items in 2nd ed. That allowed a character to regain 1 hp for every 10 he dealt in melee combat.) Create an all-melee party (to avoid worrying about spells and other finite resources) and be sure to go after a bunch of helpless civilians and domestic animals after every real fight. If nothing else, there’s bound to be a few isolated farms and hamlets surrounding the place that you can mine to regain health.

It might also be worth having a few contingencies in mind to allow for immediate escape when required. The DM’s bound to have a few unpleasant surprises in store to throw at you in play.

Doesn’t really sound like a game that I’d enjoy playing in, but each to their own. Good luck, and be sure to tell us how it goes!

Topic: Job Search Issues
Subject: First off, what sort of jobs are you applying for?

If you’re just looking for general advice then:

Don’t send out blanket CVs, it’s always worth tailoring them to the requirements of the job you’re applying for. Rather than just explaining what you’ve done in the past, you’ll also need to elaborate on what you’ve learned and gained from it. Make it as easy as possible for the person reading your CV to identify what you’d be bringing to the job.

If you’re applying for a job involving customer service and don’t have a lot of experience in the field then it might be worth doing some voluntary work in a charity shop.

Take the time to prepare for your interview with a friend or relative beforehand. You can expect to be asked questions along the lines of “tell me about a situation where you worked as part of a team” and it can be worth having prepared a few responses ahead of time. It’s also probably better to be too smart than too casual.

Other than that good luck! Hope you find what you’re looking for soon.

“You’d have thought that I’d know better?” the veteran’s tone was placid, even conversational, as he brushed a few stray splinters of ceramic from his bronzed arms and toga. Even through the haze of an interrupted fight sharp memories surfaced of a time when he’d never have dared answer back to an officer. Shrugging off an instinct ingrained by two decades’ military training: to stand mutely to attention, salute and thank the Gods that he’d got off so lightly, he reminded himself that those days must have been - were - a lifetime ago.
And after all, he wasn’t in the army any more.

“You know as well as I do that this city burns rapists. What would you have had me do, step in and see your soldiers suffer a few bruises tonight, or let them go through with their filthy act and watch them left for the crows in the morning? Besides which, I dare say the Legion could do without the publicity of having three of their soldiers assault a Roman woman in the middle of a crowded tavern… that’d make a pretty story for the forum tomorrow.”

“Now, I’m sure if you were minded you could make a damn sight more trouble for us than we could for you,” in his experience it never did any harm to flatter the officers a little. And besides, it was probably true enough. “Or you can admit that I’ve done you a good turn and sit down for a drink or two with the lady here and myself.” Glancing across enquiringly to the as yet un-introduced Kindred, Deodatus sought to gauge her reaction to the proposal. If she had other plans then he certainly wouldn’t be standing in her way.

“I’ll order over another flagon of wine, we can tell each other a few stories from the frontier and drink a toast to your good fortunes on the coming campaign.”

OOC: If you’re rolling for it, Deodatus will spend a point of willpower on persuading the centurion to hang around a socialise a bit.

“Sick people eating each other?” Bryson winced slightly as Lisa’s hysterical voice rang shrilly in his left ear. “What the hell does that mean John?”

Bryson remained silent, watching in disbelief as The Bald-Headed Man and Goth Girl (as he’d now come to think of them) piled enough weapons to arm half the county into the back of their cherry-coloured sedan. Truth be told, he was struggling to find anything even half-way coherent to say.

“So you folks got a Remington Model Seven?” the minister asked incredulously, eager to break a heavy silence punctuated only by the harsh metallic clink of falling knives and firearms. “Good deer-hunting rifle, my brother-in-law, back down in Kentucky, swears by it.” On the plus side, the fear that he might somewhat have lost perspective on events was losing its sting by the second.

When the dead man, his desiccated frame still clad in the remnants of a cheap funeral suit, came shambling across the parking lot, it was all Bryson could do not to gawp. There seemed something faintly absurd about the whole sorry spectacle, like another bad dream he might awaken from at any moment. Alone again, at 5 AM, in his rented apartment, with the pale light of another unwanted morning already streaming gaudily through the curtains

And then it hit him: he was already wide awake, the air streaming from the air con bitterly cold and sticky against the sweat on his brow. “Hey! Back of pal!” Bryson shouted, fumbling in a sudden panic for the familiar weight of his .44 in the glove locker. When the revenant, uncaring or simply oblivious, didn’t check its slow, methodical step, six years of military training kicked in from somewhere within the minister’s primate lizard brain and he put a bullet in it.

OOC: Bryson, not having watched many zombie movies, will be aiming for the upper torso.

And yes, his accent is returning somewhat to his roots as the crisis hits.

Deodatus returned the inebriated legionary’s slurred offer with a stony stare. There seemed precious little advantage to be gained from extending the dialogue further, the soldiers plainly too drunk on cheap wine and overbearing boasts of their own bravado to hear reason, unless it was delivered on the point of an unmistakeable demonstration of superior physical force. Besides which, as a man with a wife and young daughters of his own in the district, he wasn’t much inclined to allow the trio to foster a belief that they could treat the subura as a private playground, to carouse and rape with impunity. Gods! What if it had been one of his daughters these drunken oafs had chosen to assault? On her way home from the work or the forum or… The unfortunate plausibility of the thought struck the fledgling vampire like an onager stone, and any thought of a peaceful resolution were forgotten. These men would need to be taught a harsh lesson in civic responsibility, and the sooner the better.

He didn’t have to wait long. One of the soldiers - the one he’d tried to remonstrate with earlier - teetered clumsily forwards to make a grasp for the woman’s arm, and through a red mist of seething fear and hatred, Deodatus saw his chance. One broad, leathery ham-hand crept unhurriedly towards an amphora of wine on the table beside him, fingers still smudged with grave-dirt closed around its slender stem in a death grip. Suddenly and without warning the vampire brought the jug up in one fluid movement to shatter with a resounding crack against the back of the unsuspecting legionary’s head. Not waiting to see whether his target was already on the way down, the vampire sprang forwards into the explosion of wine and splintering pottery, hammering his left fist into the man’s stomach.

OOC: Deodatus will make an all-out attack against the first legionary.

Subject: Dungeons & Dragons Poem - Published in 1984

I was doing a little research online and stumbled across this old poem. It was published in The English Journal way back in 1984.

Dungeons & Dragons (To Brion) - Jayne R. Smith

Lost in the world of is,
You wandered in the realms of might have been.
On your white horse you fought dragons,
Lurking in paper dungeons, with your paper sword.

When the dungeons deepened
And the pathways dimmed,
You grabbed a thin thread,
Held on, followed it to light,
It frayed, wore thin,
But you wove it into a sheer fabric
Through which you could safely see the world,
Function in it, survive-
But still clash with dragons.

Then you slashed the veil,
Leaped into the world khaki-clad.
The dragons became real;
Your sword was steel.
You flourished, deserted the dungeons,
Shot your white horse,
Rode into reality on your black motorcycle-

And really died.

Dungeons and Dragons (To Brion), Jayne R. Smith, The English Journal , Vol. 73, No. 5 (Sep., 1984), p. 84.

Deodatus shrugged his broad shoulders, slumped heavily into the empty seat before him and poured a little of the sharp, vinegary wine into a leather tankard from the table. Draining the flask in a single throaty gulp, the vampire had to fight back a sudden urge to vomit as the offending liquid flooded in a solid rush to his dead, empty gut. Not an experience the dead man relished by any means, but he had sense enough to avoid offending the local gods.

“Now, let’s talk brass tacks,” the revenant suggested, turning back to face Manius. “Where are these soldiers, and how will I know when I see them. Of course,” the vampire admitted with a nonchalant grin, “I could probably find them anyway, but it’d cost you extra for my time.”

Settling back casually into his chair, like some great cat at rest, Deodatus took a second pull of the bitter wine as he waited dispassionately for Manius to offer him adequate remuneration for the task. The vampire’s ruthless gaze appeared at odds with his otherwise easygoing manner, steely blue eyes never once leaving his contact’s face as he committed every word of the man’s answer to memory against some future indiscretion.

The door swung open and slammed shut somewhere behind him, and along with the sudden gust of chill air the indolently seated vampire was struck by a sudden and unexpected tremor of instinctive animal fury – there was another of the Damned, here in his favourite watering hole. Seemingly indifferent, Deodatus barely shifted a muscle, save to lean forward and casually pour himself another drink, but the coarse black hair on his hulking arms bristled angrily to attention, and it was all the vampire could do to keep his hand from shaking as he held the heavy metal jug aloft. It was perhaps the veteran’s good fortune that Manius seemed equally distracted by the intruder and, a heartbeat later, once he had regained some measure of self-control, Deodatus shifted slightly on the bench to follow the man’s lust-filled stare. He was greeted by the site of three drunken legionaries harassing a slender, olive-skinned beauty. Deodatus shrugged, if she was Kindred then it seemed more likely than not that the trespasser could look after herself, but felt his dead frame rising heavily from the bench none the less.

The vampire allowed his dark, winter cloak to fall open as he sauntered idly towards the four, revealing faded military tattoos – SPQR – stretched tightly across the skin of cumbersome shoulders and the huge, battle-scarred hand which trailed the gladius hanging at his belt.

“Now lads, I’m sure the lady doesn’t want any trouble,” the vampire began with a broad, predatory smile, his voice flat and almost devoid of emotion, “There’s a brothel two doors down, and I’d suggest you and your friends take your custom there."

OOC: Deodatus will spend a vitae point to keep the wine down for the rest of the scene. Subject to your approval, I’d like him to make an Intimidation check against the legionaries.

This is assuming that both vampires pass their checks for frenzy, if not then I’ll rewrite the second half of this post.

Nice one, I can imagine that you’ll have a lot of fun researching that.

One general suggestion: always have a thesis in mind before you start writing. Otherwise you’ll end up wasting a lot of time redrafting later on… I’ve made this mistake a couple of time myself.

Also, anything too far off the beaten track can be a complete nightmare to find academic references for. Does your university subscribe to Athens? If so, then you might have more luck finding articles online than in your college library.
