Subject: And the others are ...

"Greetings Xiu Shan ... my name is Relnalgo Naloke and forgive me for wishing to save a life before learning the names of those who help. Anyway, how is he? And who are the others that helped us?"

Shan smiles again and bows deeply to him eyes to the floor, then rises slowly. "Ralnalgo Naloke, you honor me with your use of my full name, unusual as it may be to your own tongue. I thank you. Your quick grasp of the inflections and tones of the pronunciation of it is quite remarkable. And your haste to find aid for someone who is a stranger to you is commendable, as well. I did not mean to denigrate you for it. Actually, I am the only one of those to help the wounded one who has not actually done anything. Well, not yet, anyway."

She extends her arm and hand, palm up, toward the half-orc and turned to look at him as well,"He has introduced himself to us as Dogfish. He seems to be waiting for something ... somewhat impatiently, but with relative calm."

Then she motions in the same fashion toward the cleric and raises her voice slightly to be heard by her: "The healer who initially knelt by his side calls herself Agela, a follower of the Almighty Pelor. Pelor is a name I am not familiar with, but this follower has done well by the person with her quick and selfless service."

She turns back to Ralnalgo and continues , " And the bartender's name is Harold. He has also gone for a healer or physic. I think he may be the owner of this place, also. As Dogfish mentioned, when Harold left he said to help outselves to the bar. I would think that a person concerned about their job would not leave it, but what just happened here is fairly unusual, I think. But the injured one seems to be better, and stable enough to survive a little while longer, so I hope help comes soon."

"I myself am, or was, just passing through. When I witnessed this attack, I decided to stay until I see it resolved, for I may have noticed details others might have missed. A skill I have acquired and often practice is that of observance of others, in mannerisms, speech, looks, and movement." When she finishes speaking, and as if to illustrate her point, she turns her head to glance and determine who and how many are still present

She nodded at the half-orc to go ahead and pick up the man ...

Shan follows the orcish one after he picks up the man to move him. She stays out of his path, but keeps watch to make sure the one the others worked so hard to save doesn't get worse quicker than they had hoped. The healer seemed to think they had a little leeway as far as time, but how much time they had was an unknown -- to Shan. As she moved to watch Dogfish lay the man on the table, she hears a noise behind her .

The dark haired elf suddenly burst in through the door ...

She had been thinking with such intensity that she had forgotten they were in a public place, and the sudden entry of the elf, whose name she didn't know yet, caused her to turn quickly and crouch defensively as the Mother Crane Protects Her Young. Seeing who it was, she relaxes almost immediately, but maintains the stance for a few seconds longer before rising slowly to nod and smile. " Ah! You're back. Your quickness in going for help prevented me from introducing myself to you, as I have to the others. My name is Xiu Shan. " She pronounces her first name like "Zhiew". "Most just call me Shan. It keeps them from tangling their tongues." She chuckles and smiles, then nods to him.

She heard the exchange between the orcish one and the cleric, and turned to the bartender. "Where would we find the nearest room to take this man to rest and be aided out of the public eye? If there is lodging nearby, I can run ahead and prepare for this unfortunate's arrival."

Turning back to the others gathered, she said,"For what it is worth, my name is Xiu Shan. I most prefer to be called Shan. May I know what I should call each of you?"

Subject: Hmmm.

My pet peeve is the player who comes in with the sole intent of causing as much Hate and Discontent as they can, in an attempt to wrest control from the DM, and thereby ruining it for the other players. This player knows the rules and doesn't argue about them, they just want to act outside the rules and try to get the other players to follow suit.

I have seen this very often with people coming into my games from other gaming groups. I began to wonder if they just got bored because it became to easy to do in their former group, or if they got kicked out for trying it or doing it too often. After a time, I developed a zero-tolerance for that sort of control-issue, and they were simply told to go because, as a rule, they could not or would not understand why others didn't like their "playing style".

So, lately, I have come to see players the same way I do children.

No, wait! Let me explain...

Children learn from both parents (rules) and peers (actions), then they act and emulate what they feel is appropriate from that learning. And the result is not always good, but it can be changed, if the parents and friends who care care enough to "intervene". Sometimes it is not enough or is a wasted effort, but the "try to save" is all you can do...

Players learn from both DM (rules) and other players (actions), then pick and choose how they want to apply that knowledge. Again, the result is not always right or good, but it can be changed. It just requires the DM and his players to work together, if they all agree the player is worth it, to demonstrate to him another way of playing. Sometimes it turns out to be a wasted effort, but at least you tried.

I have had many games descend into hack-and-slash, usually with players that only knew that one type of gaming, who were never taught the joys of "real" ("true"?) role-playing. If introduced (bit by bit) to roleplaying in a fashion they can understand, they take to it like a duck to water. No matter if the interactions are with the noble class and/or courtroom intrigue, "whodunnit" searches for murderers or thieves, and the rare hired search for some exotic creature or item for a wizards research (usually reasonably lucrative for minimal risk, just a lot of time), they begin to love it, and wean themselves away from the "let's to out and kill something" attitude.

As Shan noticed a third person, a dark-headed man, get involved in the injured man's case, she perked up. More so when she heard the words "poison", "anti-toxin", and "extract". So. Alive, but still in trouble, the man was. She assessed her belongings quickly and found nothing in her memory that would be of aid here and now, except her strength, arms, and legs. But the dark-haired man intrigued her. Might he be the "Fourth Leg"? He was the last to have drawn her attention, but he was nonetheless intended to have crossed her path and those of the others he was with now.

But if they split up and went their separate directions, she might never get this search for knowledge underway. Snorting in frustration, she stood, rounds the table, and approaches the group hovering over the fallen one. She waits for an opportunity to speak, not wanting to interrupt any vital information being passed. Clearing her throat, she speaks. Not in a tone of Slashing, to cut off the flow of someone else's words, but in the tone of Offering Knowledge, to inform.

"'he'he'hmm. I see that this situation is being well-handled. I am not a healer, nor do I have anything on my person that I believe would be of help here. But I will still offer whatever service or aid any of you feel I can provide."

That having been said, she stands quietly, staying out of the way until she is needed (if she is needed).

Subject: Three? Four?

Shan sat down, for now. While the big one ran for he door, then quickly gave up (another mark against him), the woman-warrior rose quickly and ran to the fallen man, arriving just after the proprietor said he was dead. She then began a litany-prayer for aid of some kind. So she was a cleric. Shan had come to respect many clerics for their dedication, their code of ethics and behavior. And those were as valid to them as her own was to her, and so deserved respect. Although some did a little too much chaotic thinking and acting for her to be comfortable with them, even they deserved respect, and they got it -- albeit grudgingly.

So the situation, for the moment, seemed well-in-hand. When the time came to ask her own questions, she had another to add to her list of people to ask, but the number now was only three. The old parable states:"A search or task which is not personal can more quickly and easily be completed on four legs. Three are unstable, at least for movement. Two are too slow, but can be used if necessary." The third person on her "list" removed the "handicap of Two Legs", but still presented a liability. So there is a fourth. There must be. But is it the fourth a "who" or a "what"?

Things had presented themselves in the order they were supposed to be presented, it could be no other way. So she would wait for the fourth "leg" for her search for knowledge.
