Topic: AMC's The Walking Dead
Subject: Watched it

Well, now I've watched it. I have to say it's quite refreshing to see such a long scene of zombie stealth in a season opening. Rick taking on two zombies in hand-to-hand combat was also quite epic, but did anyone else think more of slapstick comedy than horror thriller when he bullseyed that zombie with a rock in the head?

I actually would have preferred it if they hadn't made Shane a drunken creep. I think these situations ("romantic choice") are much more interesting when we can sympathize with both characters and the choice isn't a no-brainer. Kind of how it's done in Superman Returns, or even The Ugly Truth. (Yes, I enjoy watching romantic comedies.) Then again, they might still do something just as interesting depending on how this thing with Andrea pans out.

One also has to wonder why Rick keeps his hat on even now that there's no police force left. Time for a pop quiz! Is it...

a) to block out the sun,
b) to signal to other survivors that he is a lawman, or
c) sex appeal?

So according to Wikipedia, the next season starts on Sunday. Anybody have some juicy gossip about the show for those of us who haven't been following the hype? (Reasonably spoiler-free, of course.)

Any cool guest stars? Will we be seeing that rifle-toting dad and his son again? Will Grugg be cast as an epic zombie viking at last?

Ever heard Professor Farnsworth in Futurama exclaim "Sweet Zombie Jesus"? We all know that Jesus was the result of virgin birth, so Zombie Jesus is obviously the first zombie—a, uh, "virgin zombie" if you will. He got infected in a mysterious and inexplicable way that involved biting himself in the face.

Anyway, you make a good point about the "don't get anything in your eyes and mouth" thing; I had forgotten about that one. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, then!

You're absolutely right about the flus and the sneezing, Eol, since that's how real-world epidemics manage to travel so far. But this is zombification we're talking about, so there's two crucial differences:

1. Zombification can only be spread through biting (in most fiction, including Walking Dead as far as we know).
2. When somebody is infected through a bite, it's a good bet more carnage will ensue right away.

Given these factors, it just seems unlikely to me that a person would a) be bitten, survive, and escape, b) hide the fact that he's bitten (high fever, delirium, etc.) to get on a plane, and c) avoid being quarantined by the local government who during the eight-hour flight will have heard of the infection. Any ideas?

Subject: Overseas

One thing I'm still wondering about that is common to most zombie fiction is this: How did the infection spread overseas?

The Americas are only reachable from the other continents by boat or by air, so infected individuals would need to travel all the way over one of the oceans to start a worldwide epidemic. We also know that the highest observed incubation time (from being bitten to waking up again, I assume) is eight hours. It takes roughly eight hours to fly from New York to London, and even more if you count waiting for the plane to get ready, given that the airport would surely shut down if zombies were to attack.

During these eight hours of flight, information about the plague would already have spread worldwide, so even assuming that the cockpit is secured and the pilot is able to land, the plane would certainly be quarantined immediately. All of this is assuming that a bitten individual could even get on a plane to begin with.

So, how does all this work out to make an overseas spreading plausible? I suppose the situation is somewhat different if the eight hours of incubation time start after the bitten individual has died—but even then, that's assuming a dying individual can get on a plane to begin with.

Wow! That was one of the most intense season finales I've seen! I was wondering what had happened to that grenade! And I agree: that look on Rick's face when he dropped it was priceless.

It'll be tense waiting for the new season, mostly because I'm dying to see if the Obama administration's budget cuts will get rid of all that "emergency" wine they've got stored down at the CDC.

The numbers do seem to match those from the CIA Factbook, but I'd be very surprised if some "free dating site" had access to a day-by-day database of every single death on the planet.

In fact, check out the numbers for several days in a row: You'll see that they change in a very predictable manner—for example, increasing by 2 or 3 every day between 1980-12-03 and 1980-12-23—indicating that their data is gathered from a fairly simple graph constructed using approximations for the various years.

This episode had a pretty unusual pacing, but I liked it. The ending had me on the edge of my seat. It's one thing when the walkers are coming towards you, but something else when it's quiet and you're just waiting for them to come—especially when salvation is the press of a button away.

I must say Daryl is acting more reasonable than I thought he would. Of course, he's bound to reunite with Merle sooner or later and that will stir things up regardless.

Season finale this Sunday, right? Looking forward to it!

Subject: My thoughts

I'm a bit late to the party, but here are my thoughts on the episode:

Good episode overall, and the ending was "to die for". (Very innovative humor on my part.) But here's something I wonder: Now that it's established fact that dreams predict the future, what other crazy things will come to people in their sleep?

Also, I'm not quite sure I understand the "gang". If they were in fact a bunch of criminals, I don't buy the idea that they of all people would suddenly care enough about a hospital full of old people to help them. If they weren't real gangsters, why did they kidnap Glenn?

As for the conspiracy theory about Merle being responsible for the zombie attack, there's one major hole in it, isn't there? For all Merle knew, Daryl was still in the camp and ruthless as he may be, I don't think he'd send the walking dead to kill his own brother.

Subject: Zombies are like Jedi!

I'll agree that the human part of the story is important, but I wouldn't say that the zombies are little more than a backdrop that could essentially be replaced by aliens or vampires or what have you. At least in our part of popular culture (the part that deals with everything that doesn't exist in the real world), the setting of a book or movie has always been important to the fans.

For example, fans of Firefly cite "no aliens" as one reason for its appeal, while fans of Star Trek cite practically the opposite: "interesting aliens". You could argue that Star Wars without Jedi would still be the same (the story of a young hero overcoming obstacles to redeem his father and save the galaxy), but that would make us nerds seem more grown-up than we really are. The lightsabers are a crucial part, dammit!

In my opinion, the series that has best combined the specific (sci-fi/fantasy) with the universal (human emotions/interaction) is Battlestar Galactica. They really did a good job of fleshing out pretty much every significant character on board (including several cylons), but they never neglected the space battles, the clankers, or the supernatural elements of the story.

Yeah, Almerin, that's what makes me slightly worried about this whole series, actually: How long can they keep the zombies scary and relevant? It's one thing to do so in a two-hour movie, but much more of a challenge in a TV series.

The reason I stopped watching Lost was because there was just too much people, too little of the supernatural. I know some people like that kind of stuff, but I'm not really into it. Maybe I just identify more with the zombies?

Graaains...

After this Sunday's episode, I guess it's obvious that there's no shortage of assholes in camp: Ed, Daryl, and "Lefty", at least. The question is: How many deaths will they cause before biting the dust themselves? (And that's a rhetorical question—so no spoilers please, Darth Falafel.)

I couldn't help but notice that the cover art for The Walking Dead looks remarkably similar to that in the d20 Modern books. Observe!

Or maybe I just read too few comic books and they actually all look like that? Still, it's not just the drawings in themselves but also the composition and colors. (Wow, now I sound really smart for using the word "composition" about art.)

I love the modern zombie because the zombie is part of 20th century mythology. No other culture in history, to the best of my knowledge, ever created something that feeds on braaains. I'll let you judge whether that's a good thing or not.

At the zombie PETA rally:

- What do we want?

I wouldn't have known about this series if I hadn't read about it here, but now I've watched the two episodes and so far I'm liking it. But does anyone else find it funny that on the way to Atlanta, only the road out of the city was crammed with cars? In a way, I guess it speaks well of the people in Atlanta that they wouldn't commit traffic violations even in a zombie apocalypse...

As for the redneck, I'm pretty sure he'll be back. Notice that when T-Dog dropped one of his bags on the roof, the camera cut to it, indicating that they will become relevant later. Of course, if he does come back, he's sure to cause more trouble than anyone needs.

- What do we want?
- Brains!
- When do we want it?
- Brains!

Just gotta love those zombies.
