Topic: There's No Place Like Rome
Subject: 53 BC, last year

I was going to post some historical info for Rome in 52 BC, but then realized that you may be using historical records for your storyline, so in order to avoid that, I figured I'd post about last year instead.

Rome
Consuls: Marcus Valerius Messalla and Gnaeus Domitius Calvinus.
Parthian war
Crassus sacks the Temple of Hierapolis and the Temple of Jerusalem on his way to engage the Parthians.
Battle of Carrhae: Romans defeated, and Crassus killed, by Parthians led by Surena.
Gallic War
Caesar defeats a revolt led by Ambiorix near Sabis.
Vercingetorix, an Arverni chieftain, leads a revolt against Caesar in Central Gaul.

Armenia
Artavasdes II becomes king of Armenia.

Subject: Battlestar Galactica: Q&A for The Shoulders of Atlas

This is the Q&A thread for Shoulders of Atlas.

Please submit a general character description and personality profile here, but only include information that would be readily available through word of mouth.

the character's service record, psych profile and any criminal history should be submitted through PM to myself, and access to such information will be limited to those with proper clearance.

This will be a free-form game. Things to think about when making your character are the following. Keep in mind this is a personality profile from before the cylon attack.

Character's rank. I have figured up the following rank structure for the Colonial Military. This may be incomplete but should work ok.

Admiral - In charge of a fleet.
Commander - Commands a ship of the line like a Battlestar.
Colonel - Commands the infantry and marine detachment aboard a military vessel and typically is the Executive Officer on a Battlestar.
Major - Generally the department head of a division, for example the CAG or chief engineer is usually a Major.
Captain - leader of a Viper squadron or a division head, such as Air Support Division.
Lieutenant - Pilot or bridge crew standard. Also a company head for a platoon.
Master Chief - Chief enlisted officer of a department, such as Flight Group or Engineering.
Chief - Work Station Supervisor.
Crewman / Sergeant - standard military personnel.

It would be assumed that most players would be officers, but I am not stopping folk fro0m playing enlisted personnel.

Is/does your character...

hate or fear cylons?

have faith in the gods?

able to kill other humans?

suffering from some mental instability?

trustworthy?

a coward?

a drinker?

a Stim user?

deserve to be one of the survivors?

Subject: The Tunnels

INSIDE THE KOBOLD LAIR
EAST OF SODGROVE SODGROVE, SOUTHERN EASTROSE
SIXTEENTH DAY OF ELMONTH - LATE AFTERNOON

((Paraphrasing the entry because we need to move on to the good parts))

Ixion Po and Snowlily enter the rightmost tunnel. Manuhol and T'puuli take the left one. Torigad and Melven take the middle.

The kobolds were not necessarily expecting anyone to enter their lair, but their innate paranoid nature meant they were not unprepared for invasion.

The entrances to the tunnels are disgusting, piled up around as high as six feet with refuse, offal and pieces of rotten food. bones litter the floors and the stench is very strong. The tunnels are tubular and about six feet across, making it a tight fit for some, perfect for others. Progress is single file.

The tunnels are trapped, and several times the party made near misses, Torigad almost being killed by a short drop onto ponji stakes, thankfully he is able to jump across it at the last moment. Ixion locates several poison dart traps, and even managed to take one apart, successfully pocketing three poisoned darts without his companion Snowlily noticing. Manuhol and T'puuli surprised the front pickets of the home guard, and with muffled blows, turn the left tunnel into a mass grave of about fifteen of the wretched things.

Melven and Torigad wade into a guard emplacement as well, and fare no worse. Torigad flexes his axe swinging muscles as Melven talks and talks about the best way to combat vermin, and in a strange way, the endless conversation allows Torigad to zone out into a combat hypnosis, swinging almost with eyes closed in a deadly ballet of amazing grace. Unfortunately, Melven is the only one who witnesses this synergic dance of death, and the strange little gnome's eyes glint with satisfaction at the ruthless combination.

Speaking of ruthless combinations, Ixion and Snowlily hail an almost constant barrage of arrows into the passages ahead, driving the blue vermin before them in terror. They strike with deadly accuracy, and only once did Ixion have to engage in melee.

About fifteen minutes of crawling, scraping, backtracking and fighting, the party makes it to a large chamber that all the entry tunnels lead into. It is a raised stone mastaba, a large area of bare rock, curved around the edges, making an odd effect like the floor of the room is a huge stone tongue inside a large underground mouth. The "throat" of the room is a gaping hole in the north wall ostensibly down into another chamber to the north and below. The center of the ceiling is a large stalactite with a hole in the central axis from which water gushes, landing in the middle of the tongue and creating a small pool before flowing down the throat into the chamber beyond.

Along the edge of the walls are small holes, perhaps two feet across, much too small for even the gnome to enter. They have pieces of sapphire scales and tattered moltings lying about the holes, suggesting that they are squeezed through quite often by small blue scaled folk. The room glows with an ambient turquiose light that seems to emanate from the passage below.

There are a dozen kobold warriors forming a shield wall in the area near the center of the room. They are dressed in battle armor of some piecemeal fashion and are wielding halfspears and long rectangular shields. They are formed up in a phalanx in a Turtle stance, a defensive anti missile formation.

There is a tense moment as both sides size each other up. Suddenly, a voice shouts out from the center of the kobold phalanx in a broken common.

"How much for you go away? We no fight, you no stay. We have silver. You go with silver, we no fight. You stay, we fight, you no leave Arren. Many die, you die on kobold spear. You take silver, you leave, you make pups for long life. How much?"

As long as you spend extra time equal to the duration of the castings... in other words if you wished to effect six people with a spell that has a two round casting time would be a lecture or story that takes 12 rounds.

It allows you to continue performing while casting.

((Tellanth has faded into the forest, lost for the time being. Melven, T'puuli is quite female.))

Torigad takes three or four steps towards the closest mound, the one to which Ixion gestured, and hurls the mighty javelin Lightbringer at the entrance of the hole. The javelin arcs across the clearing and enters into the dark hole cleanly. Something inside the hole screeches in surprise and a great scrabbling can be heard from within. Torigad lopes after the javelin, running straight into the clearing before the five mound entrances, pulling his shield off his back and drawing his axe. The other holes erupt with missile fire. Javelins. The sparkle of blue scales can be seen in the weak light that penetrates the entrance. The kobold sentries are focused on the black skinned dwarf.

Javelins arc from the entrances of the mounds and cross Torigad's path... three of them fall short or fly past, but one finds its mark. The javelin from the leftmost mound hits Torigad squarely in the hip, behind the edge of his shield. His jaw drops and his eyes widen at the sudden shock, but he does not slow down.

Ixion immediately makes good on his promise, raising his hand crossbow and firing into the source of Torigad's new injury. The tiny quarrel darts into the hole and hits the partially exposed sapphire kobold in the eye, and it falls to the ground and rolls out of the hole, deader than Kel the Unwary.

Snowlily is also on point, drawing back on her longbow to loose an arrow into the adjacent hole. Unfortunately for her, the rain has caused damage to her bowstring, and her draw causes it to snap, the arrow falling to the ground a few feet in front of her. The snow white fletching flutters in the rain, mocking her. She curses and whips out a new string, angrily crouching to avoid random missile fire while she restrings her beloved longbow.

Manuhol, who is among the rear three mounds, listens for a second as the kobolds within these entrances chatter frantically in a barking, growling bastardization of draconic. Deciding that they are planning to attack, he sticks a lethal quarterstaff tip through the side of the mound and taps one on the head in a focused chi attack. The blow scarcely had more than three inches of forward thrust, but the kobold's bright blue head springs a bright red leak and the filthy creature doubles up and quickly dies a most unconscious death.

The other two kobolds in the entrance attempt to skewer Manuhol with halfspears, one missing completely. The other almost hits the unarmored monk, but he knocks it aside at the last moment.

T'puuli and Melven enter the theatre of combat with little time to act, as the combat had already began.

~~~
Torigad enters the nearest mound, the same that he hurled Lightbringer into. The last thing the rest of the party sees of him is his axe raising up as he enters, shouting a challenge to the occupant. The horrible sound of bloody mutilation issues from the tunnel as Torigad brings the wrath to the blue skinned beasts within.
Three javelins fly out of the remaining holes in seemingly random directions. One of the nasty critters hurls a javelin at T'puuli, hitting her in the meat of her upper left arm and continuing through. She grits her teeth in pain.
Ixion reloads his crossbow, moving to take up a better position, accidently covering Snowlily's position to her benefit.
With almost practiced timing, Snowlily snaps the brand new string onto her bow and picks up the errant arrow. She rises and stands immediately behind Ixion, partially covered by his left shoulder. They raise their weapons in almost unison. Ixion ignores the smell of wild white daffodils Snowlily wears as best he can, although he doesn't know what kind they are he finds them pleasing nonetheless. No time for that now.
Manuhol steps forward into the kobold and kicks it in the face, killing it. In the same motion he falls backward and attempts to bash the one behind him with a double dragon talon maneuver, but comes up short as he misjudged the kobold's distance. The kobold stabs at Manuhol but only succeeds in hitting the ground between his arm and neck.
T'puuli enters one of the mounds and misses with her first backhand, and as the kobold turns back to stick its tongue out at her, she smashes its chin into its muzzle with a perfect knee attack, permanently fusing its jaws together and severing its tongue. Likely it will not need it again, however; it is also permanently dead.
Melven spots one of the last two sentries readying another javelin and chases after it. The dirty creature sees him coming and decides to flee into the warrens below, unfortunately, Melven is pretty quick for a gnome, and he manages to tackle it as it tries to escape. Dragging it out into the sun, it screams and covers its eyes.
~~
Torigad steps out of the tunnel he entered, dragging a dead sentry into the clearing. He grips the javelin in his hand and makes to pull it out, but his strength fails him. Its just too painful to wrench it free on his own.
Ixion and Snowlily perforate the blinded kobold in unison, killing it. The white fletched arrow of Snowlily's waves in the sunlit rain.
Manuhol grabs the last sapphire kobold, dragging it out of its hole and raises it above his head for a moment, then brings it back down sideways on his knee with a loud cracking sound.
T'puuli steps back into the clearing, bleeding from her arm. She holds it to her side, seeming to attempt to hide it from the others. Not that it helps, her snow white hair has blood in it.
Melven, a little shaken from the precise missile fire so close to his face, stands up and wipes mud off of him.
The cows moo plaintively, almost oblivious to the brutal slayings around them.
((The field is yours. None of the sentries survived. This is night time to the kobolds, so it might be a couple of hours before they even realize their sentries are dead.))
All along the watchtower would have been a great thought... except that they went to great and terrible pains to make their world so different from ours. Come on now.. I thought BSG universe was before the "real" world... as in they formed our civilization... how could that one song make it all that time?
And if it isn't and they find 20th century earth like in the original series? Even more ridiculous. As for me, that's the one part I try to keep from thinking about... it ruins my suspension of disbelief.
Lee Adama is the only person that it would be an actual surprise to make a cylon. Except maybe Kalli... now wouldn't that be ironic.
Oh and Cap 6 is pregnant... well, now who's the father? Couldn't be Tigh... cylons can't breed... is she cheating on him or is Tigh really a cylon? I think they are good at answering questions in a way that causes more questions.
Yes, I have to give props to Wyrmsting. I was about to volunteer my 8th grade level of Paint for a map, but this seems to be much nicer.
I'd be happy to help. I am decent at paint (for what its worth) and have always used custom realms.
Interesting that you mention that elves and dwarves have different nations than humans, and how this is possibly Tolkein’s fault. However, with the slants that you wish to take on racism, I believe that's what you'll largely end up with. Elven kingdoms whose gods encourage them to enslave other races war with each other for the right to pillage nearby human and gnome settlements. Gnomish empires that are held together by the will of their cabalistic councils, told by their gods that other races are pagan heretics or are wild savages. Imagine highly classical dwarves, perhaps a democracy of Hellenists, defending their mountain city-states from barbaric elves and humans who wish to rob them of their precious metal mines. Of course, humans have their own gods who have conflicting messages about how to accept other races, but in such a society, it’s likely that non humans would be second class citizens at best.
What about dirty underprivileged halflings? Forced to eke out a living as destitute nomads, constantly fleeing superstitious and suspicious farmers, they are sometimes chased out of an area with rods and shovels by angry distrustful locals. Taking to a life of larceny by little more than the need to survive, they worship their mysterious gods in secrecy and isolation.
This may cause problems in a game that you do not wish to focus on more than the dungeon or the dragon’s hoard, but in a roleplay intensive environment, having to flee a city because the party keeps company with one of those thieving cheating scoundrel low down squash stealing halflings, it is endless entertainment for DM’s everywhere.
Anyway, if you want more thoughts, just let me know. I can do this all day long.
Subject: The Kobold Camp
After thoroughly inspecting the site for traps, sentries and things out of the ordinary...
Ixion locates a series of pit traps staggered aroud the site and a rough circle. The cows are corraled with rudimentary fence pieces within this circle. The traps are the same as before, ponji sticks at the bottom smeared with animal guts and feces. In fact, the smell is what gives them away. the pits are far enough apart to get between but ingeniously placed so as to be a serious problem for the unwary. Perhaps the foul blue vermin thought only farmers would come looking.
Manuhol swings wide and scouts the immediate area. He finds several more of the strange mound-holes. This is where I want to describe them in more detail. Surrounding the corral, and in several spots out in the ruins, there are tunnels dug into the ground, but there are piles of trash and refuse surrounding the holes that are so high, the holes appear to begin several feet above the ground. They form black and ugly mounds that look like obscene ant hills. Almost as if when taking out the trash, a kobold comes to just within the entrance and tosses it out the hole. Over time, the refuse and trash builds up to make a mound. There are five around the corral and three more in the foliage amidst the ruins. to be honest, Ixion saw them too, but Manuhol noticed the glint of blue coming from just inside them. Their sentries are posted within the tunnel entrances.
T'puuli doubled back and took a look at the strange looking gnome following the party, his cart in tow. In all actuality, the scene of the last fight was some distance from the current location, but this gnome makes enough noise that it is reasonable that he could be heard over the rain. I'll leave descriptions to them.
((Not a bad idea for another round of descriptions, gives everyone an opportunity to account for the hours in the rain, and keeps some folks from having to pore over old pages to see whats in front of them. I dont care if you use a generic description every time, but you don't have to.))
Snowlily patiently keeps an eye out for secondary encounters and minds the holes for surprises, waiting for the rest of the party to decide on the best course of action.
Tellanth is currently distracted with his spell books and components, appearing to have some difficulty with waterproof storage.
Torigad is wringing water from his half shaven beard... one side super bushy and the other side almost completely gone. ((if I understood that right?))
Melven continues to rustle through the kobolds for anything of value, only finding about six pounds of metal weapon bits and odds and ends, usable really only as scrap. Perhaps a hot kiln could melt it down into something more useful... but other than that, little value except incidental.
The rain slows some more, and the sky cracks open even farther. The sun peeks from behind the clouds and bathes the party in warm rays. Snowlily, who has been almost imperceptibly shivering sense the barn, has warmed up enough to stop.
((I'm not going to describe the Larry Elmore moment with the super exotic females here drenched in rain... I'm sure you can imagine it...))
The Lair of the Kobolds
Southeast of Sodgrove
The Sixteenth Day of Elmonth, afternoon
The group wastes little time continuing onward. The trail is easily followed, however the trip is longer due to the need to be aware of more traps. The sky lightens back to day as they make their way through the dense forest. The rain does not give up, however, thoroughly soaking everyone beyond being soaked.
Over the next hill, the trees open up to reveal a long valley, densely packed with trees. Through the canopy, an ancient ruin of rusted metal framework can be seen rising some twenty feet above the treetops. This is on the other end of the valley, and from the group's reckoning maybe a mile or more away.
It is mid afternoon when the odd band reaches the cattle. The adventurers crouch behind an outcropping of rocks and count the cows in the corral, about two hundred of them. The corral is rough cut and made out of skinned tree limbs. There are piles of junk and debris surrounding the corral, maybe five or six largeish holes tunneled through the middle of what appear to be six or seven foot piles of trash and refuse. They rise up like ant mounds. Nearby, several straight lines made out of old stones proclaim themselves to be the ruins of some grand marble structure.
The rain lightens considerably as the clouds overhead break open for a moment. The sunlight streaming through makes rays that appear very majestic, and backlight the underlying cloud cover. In a small place, the blue sky can be seen. However, the rain never actually stops coming down, but now its much brighter.
I am glad you guys approve. I jumped the gun a bit, but my main fear, as always, is the game stalling and then the game dying. So I took the initiative and went ahead with the plan as I saw it laid out.
I can handle pausing every other round for reworking plans, as things tend to change alot in that short of a timeframe. I will make exceptions when I know the battle is obviously one-sided, as it was here.
They didn't even get to attack. this is because when I rolled for surprise, the kobolds rolled a 1. I ruled that this meant they were completely unready to fight and weren't planning on fighting you anyway. They only outnumbered you 2 - 1 ... not enough for kobolds to attack. So they fled, and their escape was blocked by Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh.
I hope all your combats are so glorious...xD
T'puuli and Manuhol sweep wide, and after some minor camouflaging, arrive in a position directly behind. Ixion, Tellanth, Snowlily and Torigad ready their weapons, appearing to make small talk. Then Ixion sneers at Torigad and nods sharply, and in almost unison, Torigad unleashes the javelin Lightbringer at the vermin as Ixion levels his hand crossbow and fires and Snowlily draws an arrow on her longbow.
Tellanth raises his arms and begins speaking in an ancient runic language, chanting as he casts his magic.
Snowlily gracefully draws an arrow and fires it into the hedge, eyes closed, guided by her hearing and instincts. A squeal erupts from the hedge and a bright blue kobold staggers from the back, taking a couple of steps towards Manuhol and T'puuli before collapsing, dead, white fletched arrow sprouting from his crumpled body.
Growling softly to herself, T'puuli crouches in the path, rain matting her white hair to her dark charcoal skin, waits for any of them to flee...
Tellanth makes signs with his hands and speaks the final word of the spell. Suddenly, a black mastiff a full nine feet tall with dripping fire for eyes and a mouth of flame steps from behind a tree in front of the hedge. It bounds into the blackberries, barking and foaming magma, savage bloodlust in its voice. This terrifies the little blue vermin and they begin fleeing out of the back towards Manuhol and T'puuli.
Torigad hurls the mighty javelin Lightbringer, catching one of the blue cretins by surprise and with a loud thud hits the nasty critter in the face, and it tumbles backwards out of the hedge and falls down dead.
Ixion fires his hand crossbow into the hedge of blackberries, but due to the savage wolf-thing, is unable to actually see them and cannot tell if he hit.
The remaining two handfuls of bright sapphire kobolds erupt from the hedge with a purpose, attempting to escape the jaws of the mastiff-beast. T'puuli and Manuhol spring into them, fists and feet flying. They also take several opportunities to hit passing kobolds.
T'puuli roars in a rather alarming rumble and attacks. She barely misses one with a kick, but it puts her close enough to land a palm in the knee of another as she focuses her force of effort with gutterally draconic sounds. The poor kobold's leg goes the other way and it falls to the dirt screaming.
Manuhol kicks one in the neck, effectively paralyzing it, and spins around, jabbing another in a pressure point under the ribcage, killing it instantly.
As more run out, Manuhol and T'puuli take their opportunities.
T'puuli attempts to decapitate one with a clawed foot, but misses by inches. The creature funs past her into the wet woods.
Manuhol chops at another and narrowly misses ruining its day, and it scurries off, attempting to get lost in the mud and rain. The one behind it is not so lucky, as the vermin runs headlong into Manuhol's forehead, smashing its eye and crushing its skull. It collapses lifeless to the ground.
The vermin may try to run, but they are very brightly colored. Snowlily takes five or six steps uphill and with a better vantage point, draws and fires. Her arrow finds its mark in the back of the farthest fleeing kobold. It is knocked to the ground, but it continues to claw and scrabble to get away. The white arrow fletching dances in the brush, giving away its location.
T'puuli catches one trying to pass her and breaks its neck in one quick motion.
Tellanth points at his demon wolf thing and it vanishes as fast as it appears. He picks his way up the hill to the wounded ones, noting that there is little else he can do.
Torgad runs up to the top of the hill and hurls another javelin, hitting one in the side, and it falls into the mud, motionless.
Ixion reloads his hand crossbow, and after moving to get a better view, fires a bolt into the neck of one of the sapphire kobolds retreating, killing it.
The kobolds flee at top speed away from the terrifying party of companions. The two that are still standing, that is. Unfortunately, their little feet cannot take them away fast enough to outrun Manuhol and T'puuli, who chase the remaining two down and tackle them in the mud, their terrified squeals soon silenced.
The sapphire kobold grunts and pants as it drags its dead legs behind it, pulling itself through the brush, arrow embedded in its back. It labors along, trying to put as much distance as possible between the vicious attackers as it can. Unfortunately, the snow white arrow jutting from its back gives away its location to Ixion Po, who never let it out of his sight. He gingerly bounds up to where the creature is crawling away and thrusts a rapier through it. It gurgles and dies.
((Two rounds, twelve Kobolds, party gained surprise and then routed them. I rolled that all out. First combat. Feedback on the Q&A thread please. The monks in the rear actually scared me there with the punching and the kicking. Not one person was even attacked, much less harmed. That was awesome!))
Topic: Legacy of the Shade Lord Q&A
Subject: Distances
Yes, your estimates on the distances are accurate. So, What I have so far is T'puuli and Manuhol are going to get behind them, and then Torigad, Ixion and Snowlily (I assume) are going to hit them with ranged, flushing them back and into the waiting ambushers. Tellanth, I assume, will be casting support.
The trees are not sparse, but visibility is reduced to about 100 yards. That's not to say that the there are no trees per football field, that means that its the most extreme distance you can possibly see anything.
The path is a rough and extremely muddy ditch that was torn apart by the passage of about 200 head of cattle. Cow pies mark the path and travel is not fun at all on the actual path. Along both sides of the path is a huge messed up tangle of blackberries and other not-fun thorned weeds. The kobolds seem to be hiding underneath it in spots hollowed out by the motion of their thickly scaled sapphire bodies. Chasing them into it would be hard, but chasing them out would be much easier with the proper weapons...
Snowlily and Tellanth... I would like to make sure you guys are in on this plan.
I'll post five rounds of combat at a time, you do not have to describe everything you do, but a general idea of about 30 seconds is good enough. It will be very similar to the player being a coach and the character being the team... you can direct, but you have no direct control over the outcome (as I will roll all the dice and assume responsibility for off the cuff actions.)
Just let me know when everyone is ready.
Ixion, I am going to make you the "caller". This means that you say when everyone's ready, and if the party moves, it will be on your word. This is to allow the party have a say when the story moves on in the event not everyone is able to post, and it doesn't make me the bad guy, lol!
The caller is the person who tells the DM when everyone is ready, and what "the plan" is. Everyone speaking at once is confusing sometimes, so I want to see how it works when the DM takes cues from the "party leader." Keep in mind that this is only for out of character reasons... Ixion is not necessarily the IC party leader... just the player who tells me when I can start combat. I chose him because he seems to post the most often.
Hey Evo, I told you they were cool here.
I've known Evo for about 11 years or so; he's a great player. A fine addition to any game. Hopefully mine.
Because longs are expensive, and some people don't like them. Me, I love my long. I think everyone should get a long.
Didn't the Grinch have an easy time seeing the whos?
Perhaps he was the dealer of said illicit substances?
Don't feed Grugg, although I have yet to hear the real reason why...
-tries to feed Grugg a toaster- ((GRUGG NO LIKE TOASTERS!!!))
But yeah, I'm a new member myself, and this place is great.
I've been griefing my friends into joining the site, and so far hooked a couple. I used to run a PnP site and everything I wanted to do is already been done did here. I decided if ya can't beat em, join em!
((story seems to be dragging... I shall move on.))
In short order, the intrepid adventurers regroup and make introductions.
"Manuhol, this is Tellanth, Snowlily, Torigad, T'puuli, and Ixion."
"Hello," "hi," "well met," and such greetings are all passed around to everyone's satisfaction.
Manuhol points out to the group where the water is flowing into the ground and Ixion quickly uncovers a hastily dug put trap. The pit was covered with broad palm fronds that are covered in a light layer of mud. Ten more paces forward, and T'puuli or Tellanth would have gone in. The pit is about ten feet deep and the bottom is covered in short bamboo stakes covered in mud and what appear to be animal guts. The wounds from a trap of this nature would be terrible indeed.
Then Manuhol points nonchalantly in the direction of the group's hidden watchers. They are in the direction the party is traveling, just off the path to the left. Tellanth, seeming to be knowledgeable about the little blue vermin, explains that they are likely the rear guard, left behind to slow pursuit to allow the main group to get back to the lair. The only thing that gives the dragonkin eavesdroppers away is an intermittent glint of bright sapphire blue through the blackberry patch.
The rain continues, soaking the group in its cold grip.
However, the sky begins to get brighter, slowly but steadily, almost like dawn. The halo in the sky fades as the sky brightens. Everyone can see their breath in the cold rain.
Off in the distance, everyone hears a hopeless mooing noise and a crashing sound.
Topic: What is your Favorite Character Class and Why?
Subject: <>
I dunno... I played the paperback before the boxes, basic boxed sets, Adnd, Adnd 2e, 3, 3.5
After accepting that 3.5 wasn't just going to go away, I read the rules and realized that for beginner players 3.5 is a hundred times easier to learn. Plus, 3.5 is DM friendly because of the Challenge Rating system. But hinestly, its better for the simple fact that they fixed all the rolls to all go in the same direction... It is so difficult to explain that the higher the numebr the better, except in the case of AC. Oh and Saves. Oh yeah, and you have to look up all your saves in this giant tedious chart that sometimes makes no sense.
No thanks. Just look up the class, add your stat mod to the number and write it down. Plus, three saves instead of five. Furthermore, I had to go out of my way to track down what a "THAC0" was. And then the math for figuring out how to hit, and as a dm trying to juggle all those numbers... fah. 3.5 is a better system hands down. That comes from a charter DND player, from back before the Boxed set. Heck, I've played Chainmail too.
But that's not the point of this thread.
The most successful character class in all systems hands down is the Ranger 2e. Simply put, its broken. You come out the gate able to use two weapons, by 6th level you have three attacks. You can cast spells. You have animal companions, and can make friends with half the monsters in the book. Don't get et by the bear. Plus with the specialization rules with bows, it was ludicrous.
But favorite? Cleric. Nothing like a little enforced piety. No we can't loot that tomb. Yes, we track down and eradicate all undead. Bringing the light to the darkness, and sometimes you gotta do it with the thief in a headlock. Roleplay is most flavorful with clerics.
Paladins. Their very code of honor demands suicide the moment a lich walks in. You're 3rd level and you bump into a lich, the Paladin shouts "Begone foul dem..."
xD
