Subject: Barrbarra

Barrb preferred silence, but understood the music. She just tuned it out -- mostly -- so that it was faint and a "world away" to allow her to think. As she rode in the rear of the party, Barrb watched Linnix bouncing around on the seat of the cart as if she were sitting on a small land-shake. Tock was as good as Linnix had praised him to be, keeping the cart up with the pace of the rest, not slowing the group. And althugh Linnix may have been comfortable riding the cart at a leisurely pace, but she could not have been comfortable at the pace Loriel had set. Said pace had to be on purpose, and Barrb wondered what Loriel's hurry was.

Barrb thought long and seriously about taking Loriel aside at first night-camp to speak with her, and about what she would say to Loriel when she did. They needed to be able to work, and act, together as a group. She had experienced being a member of a relatively close-knit group guarding a castle, placing your life and trust and respect in the abilities of others who showed you the same trust and respect. She didn't know all of her fellow guardsmen well, but she did know their abilities and trusted them because she knew they trusted her. She needed to trust those she fought beside, and she could not allow herself the luxury of trusting someone who seemed to place herself above others, looking down on them in judgement, not acceptance. (Well, maybe not in all of us ...) She did show an absolute deference to Elesia, a grudging realization of Bart's position, and did offer a quiet nod and a smile to the gnome, Xaris. Probably because he had no horse for her to deride. Barrb chuckled at her own pun.

Loriel showed the forcefulness and disdain of the thoughts of others that Barrb expected from Aelistae, and Aelistae showed the respect and courtesy to others that Barrb would have expected from Loriel. It was confusing. Despite Aelistae's obvious heritage, Barrb trusted and respected Aelistae more simply for her treatment of others Her interaction with others was careful and thoughtful, but it could be mistaken for indecision were it not for her resolve. This resolve was shown again when Aelistae rode forward at the bridge ...

Barrb stops at the sight of the scenario at the bridge, and immediately turns Umm around to glance-check behind for any possible bad-guy reinforcements.

[[ If she sees any ]] She dismounts and unslings her bow to be ready, standing her ground.

[[ If she sees none ]] She wheels Umm about again and rides foward quickly. As she passes Linnix, she will try to get her attention and point to the rear, quietly asking, "Please watch? ..." . As she rides to join the other two archers, she unslings her longbow from her shoulders. [[ free action -- Quick Draw]]. As she moves, she notes the locations of Loriel and Aelistae so that she can form a "front-line" with them. She stays to the left of the road and approaches no closer than either of the other two. [[ no closer than 60 feet from the near end of the bridge initially, in any case ]] She then dismounts Umm and drops the reins to ground-tie him. She prepares to aim at one of the two assaulting the rider in the middle of the bridge, the biggest target from her angle. [[Precise Shot, no -4 penalty]]

Subject: an answer (sort of)

Barrb nodded acknowledgement to Loriel's mention of her question. "'Twas stated simply enough. And thinking about it will assure an intelligent anwer. Your assessment of the hard-riders mirrors my own already stated conclusion. But since we already had the gear and supplies stowed in the magical hole kindly and thoughtfully supplied by Elesia when they passed through, the armored rabble have no idea what we're carrying, much less the amount we carry. And Linnix's cart is obviously not carrying a great load of supplies. so I don't think we need fear them attempting to waylay us for something they don't know we have. But it is all the more reason not to hurry and overtake them. The way I look at it, the more they clear out, the less work we'll have to do. It may be that the only thing we will have to clear out is the other teams. And all of us wear light or no armor, which would be an advantage against a heavily-armored person in a room or corridor. This I know from experience of my own. "

Subject: The interruption

Barrb listened to the soft words of Bart, and sighed. "Fair enough, but even the effort of producing sustenance for battle-weary troops is a laudable, commendable effort. Well, then. Loriel, it seems that Bart has seen fit to accept your demand to leave the wagon. Nothing I can say will change that. But I, for one, will maintain my decision to stay to the road, but will agree to abide by the decision of the majority.

When Bart asked for a kind of blessing from the priestess beside him, she was as surprised as Bart at what transpired in his wagon. So much for pack mules ... Then at the arrival of the two white stallions in response to the call of the priestess, she simply stared and wondered at the aid suddenly coming to this company and to Bart's dream.

Barrb's reverie was interrupted by the shouts and rattles of Zacharius' armored troop.

Rabble? Rabble, indeed! No fool, she, to be in the way of an over-armed and over-confident contingent of armored "beetles with attitudes". Barrb quickly rode out of the way of the oncoming wedge, disgust plain on her face, but made no move toward a weapon. After their passing, her face became blankly emotionless. Barrb turned to Loriel, but the words she spoke were loud enough to indicate that they were for all,"There goes one of the obstacles we will have to face later. Besides the force we have to eradicate at the castle, neither will these men that just rode by allow us to complete our task in peace."

Barrb spat that single word like a derogatory epithet, dripping with sarcasm. But her face still showed no emotion. It was also clear to see by her fidgeting with Umm's reins that it was kept that way with great effort.

"Nor should we think they will aid us. Only one team will succeed in this venture. Therefore each team is an obstacle to the others. If we succeed and any of the other teams still walk and breathe, we may be able to recruit them. But I doubt it will come to that"

Barrb couldnt help but hear Loriel's words to Linnix. Although the tone from Loriel was calm, Barrb felt that she was missing something. She reined her mount around in a small lazy circle to face Loriel's mount.

" Loriel, I admit that you make a few good points, which shows that you have experience. But you speak in absolutes when you voice what someone does or does not know. Did you not hear Sir Bart's statement that indicates that he himself has some experience with battle? And of all people, he would know what his mare is capable of. And he obviously knows the terrain better than any here, including me, as I mentioned. And you speak of the lameness of horses and breakdown of wagons as if it is inevitable. I, for one, do not agree, and will not borrow trouble when unneccessary."

"I know not how much experience you have, or where you got it, or when. So I will not presume to correct your assessment of Bart's suggestion as to the best route to take. We all heard you voice your thoughts. Some will agree and some will not. Your points are valid -- to you and, I'm sure, to the rest of us -- but hear this: they will not be acted upon simply because you believe you know best. Four of us have made our opinions known, three of those agree on a different course of action than that which you would prefer."

"I have one question. Please take your time to answer, if you need to. How did you come to know so much about prople you have only just met?"
She will sit still astride Umm until she gets an indication of an answer or dismissal, then will ride silently to her position.

Barrb heard what Loriel said to Linnix and was about to reprimand her for being a bit too forward. When Linnix answered her in a straightforward manner, refusing to give up her cart, Barrb saw no reason to say anything after the exchange.

But she rankled a bit when Loriel presumed to ask Bart if he could get pack animals and spread the gear out among them, rather than slow the group down with the wagon and the old mare. Telling the sponsor what he "needed" to do? Denigrating the old mare, who has probably sturdier from having done more work in her lifetime than Loriel's own animal? Enough was enough. Barrb began to ride over to Loreil.

But again, Linnix jumped in to try and straighten Loriel out, chastising her for making demands of their sponsor, and stating her position and thoughts. She then strode back to her cart, fuming.

Barrb spoke softly, trying to keep the sarcasm she felt out of her voice, because she did not want any animosities within the group. It weakened their effectiveness. "Loriel, you mention replacing the wagon with pack animals for the the upcoming terrain, which you yourself call 'unknown'. If such is true, why not defer to the one who would know the terrain better than any of us here, even me. And I know somewhat of the terrain you question, having traveled it to get here. And I came with large wagons, larger than this wagon Bart has for us. And one or two wagons are more easily defended than a bunch of scared mules loaded down with goods. It's also easier to retrieve a wagon than six or ten of those scared mules that have taken off in all directions. No, I also favor the quick and easy route that our sponsor -- our sponsor -- suggested. The roads. I will not wrong-say you, but I am uneasy with demanding from those whom one should get to know before making those demands."

"Elesia, Bart, I also apologize to you for some others here. I prefer to ride in the front or the far back in a group such as this. Either is for maximum defense. Where would you prefer that I ride?"

[If, or when, Bart tells her his preference, she will ride to take that position. If he leaves the decision up to her, she will ride point.]

I may not exactly be "right", but it is a modified version of how I used to look at the whole Detect Alignment thing.
Olan helped clear things up for me, too.

Dump the system? Absolutely not! It is a useful tool, and was devised with forethought to playability and balance. But the DM has to step in and take all the aforementioned information into consideration when the character attempts to detect alignment. Then, if it fails, she (or he, for all you equal-opportunists) has to stand by her guns and NOT give the reason for failure to the player(s). The best way for the players to realize why it failed, if it failed, would be hints to lead them to that realization by deduction on their part. These hints could take the form of actions or occurrences. For me, that is what role-playing is all about.
(edited)
Oh, and one more point (thanks Utan). "Detected evil" isn't always a bad thing. the subjective thing again. An evil person casting Detect Good would see any detected good as a bad thing and would simply not detect any evil (which would have been a good thing) ...

That whole session just drained my brain. Can I just go sit in a corner, drool, and pluck my lower lip for a while?

... to open a can of worms like this.

Ginafae brings up a good point. Detecting alignment is not necessarily detecting intent. A person (regardless of profession) that "intends" to open a hole between someone's ribs may be doing it because he believes it is necessary, or that it is simply not wrong because it's justifiable in his own mind, for his own reasons. So his intent is not "evil" in his mind. It may even be thought of as good, even though it causes a death or maiming. Detecting alignment on this person would not detect his "intent" as evil, but whether or not his action was "evil" according to the morals and ethics of the person divining it (subjective).

And I had not looked at it before as you mentioned. Olan. If this same would-be perpetrator was thinking about stabbing the aforementioned person while sitting outside smoking a pipe and waiting for his intended prey to arrive, detecting evil would not detect any, for it had not happened -- yet. And the detection does not allow for precognition or "possible outcome" or "selective telepathy".

I just found a glitch with the albums. Minor, but I thought I should let you all know. While the albums give the option to upload any pic you want, of any size, you can't put them in your own folders. I tried. The uploaded pics go to a holding area, and then have to be moved by the album creator (me) to the respective folders. I do not mind doing this if you all can work with it. I can update on a daily basis.

Its up to you all who uses them, if anyone at all does. But they are available ...

Anyway, below are links to four game-related photo albums that all of us can post to and share from. If you like a pic you see in an album, just right-click on it and save it.

For the links below, just right-click and save shortcut(or save target, depending on browser).

Or just left-click on the link(s) here, ahd then save the page in your favorites. If you decide not to use them, my feelings won't be hurt. It was just a thought, and I had to try it ... ((links follow))

I'm on dial-up, and I don't mind pics that aren't multi-megabyte downloads to view. I also like visual aids. I don't need 'em, with my imagination, but I like 'em.

For Everybody In This Game:
I have spoken to my brother and he has created a holding area on his domain for any pics you wish to send to him to upload to a central area. Unfortnately, he will not allow access to his ftp handler, but if you send any pics to him, he will upload them asap ...

I can send the necessary code to access any of your own pics sent to this "holding area" to either insert it into your post or add a link to your post to view only the pic in a new window without having to go to another site and search a photo library ... (examples below)
Like this ...      [[ Link to Barrb's pic ]]

Just a thought. If anyone is interested I'll post his e-mail address (he said okay to that) and PM the HTML code to you ...

Barrbarra hustled back to the inn where her belongings were, inventoried them carefully, then packed them hurriedly. Stopping at the innkeepers counter, she then paid for her stay [noted in PM, with purchases] before she made for the stable to reclaim her mount and take the time to inventory the gear she had stashed there as well. After paying the stabler, she heads for the gate to meet Bart and the others

[Search checks 6/20 + 4 = 10 and 7/20 + 4 = 11 . Spot checks 13/20 + 4 = 17, and 2/20 + 4 = 6. ]
[If no gear is missing, she will add 5 gp each to innkeeper and stabler for honesty, and tips the ostler 5 silver pieces for her animal's care. If any gear is missing, notify in PM. She will then threaten each with retribution, then she'll replace the missing gear along with the other purchases.]

I agree with the one (whoever it was) that gave Zonk a CD.

Zonk and I have PM'd a few times, and the aggravating part is that I don't know if the player is Homme or Femme. The answers to that question are enigmatic and purposefully frustrating ...

Regardless, I also have a CD4 Zonk. He seems to have grasp of his characters actions and motives, describing them well.

Now Barrb began to feel odder than she had felt in a long time. There was one human in the smallish group gathered near Bart the Farmer, and that female human was a full half-foot shorter than Barrb herself. She identified, kind of, with the gnome as a warrior, but the appearance of his equipment and dress showed him to me more of a "survivalist" sort than the mercenary she had come to be. At least one more of mixed blood besides herself was present, so far. That one had a racial lineage she could identify, but did not act as did those of the dark elven heritage Barrb had encountered. The other was simply unknown to Barrb. A race she had never seen. Elven descent, obviously, but not identifiable to Barrb. Here was an opportunity to learn something new. But now was not the time. That would wait until they were on their way...

At the dark female's question of mother-given names, Barrb was taken a bit by surprise. This one was definitely different. And because of that one revelation, she answered without hesitation, but without interrupting anyone else, "Barrbarra Ienn. Warrior and currently blank shield." Her name was pronounces, slowly, as "bar-BAR-a ee-YENN", obviously to make sure the pronunciation was understood by all.

To the gnome, after a few minutes of introductions, she said, "It looks as if you and I will be the strong arms of this group. I am sure that all here are capable in their own rights, but I am also certain that we will be the cause of most of the physically protective defense, as it were. " She smiled at him and nodded. "Do you agree"?

Subject: Magic, eh?

After hearing the announcement of the Queen and the sponsors she introduced, Barrb's first move was to stand in line in front of the Magus, Gafgerion. A magical item of any sort could be useful in her line of work. And if the item, as hinted, was tailor-made for this venture, she would be sure to get that one very useful item.

She had to chuckle at the short line in front of the farmer. But he actually had a couple of folk sign his sheet, in spite of the fact that he admitted to not having anything of worth to offer. And he had the boldness to figure on cashing in on the work of others to make him a noble? Then she saw one of the signees of the farmer's sheet throw back her hood and reveal herself to be Drow! Here in front of the Monarchy's entourage? Was the woman crazy? But the dark elven female signed quickly and left just as soon as she could. Not typical Drow, not by a long shot. Barrb knew. She had been in one skirmish with a party of Drow -- only one -- and she and her friends had lost miserably and were forced to retreat, without a few of their number. No, this one was willingly out in daylight, in the midst of folk she had to know would not be friendly to her. And she didn't seek armor, wealth, or magic which would also be typical.

Barrb glanced back and forth between the farmer and the long line she was in to be sponsored by the mage. She wanted to be chosen, but would she stand out enough in this group vying for the attention of the spellcaster? It only took a few seconds for her to decide. She moved to the farmer's sheet and signed it. As she did, she felt just like she had when J'Hannik Foebender had singled her out to be trained by him as a castle guard. She had been given an opportunity to become what she now was, and for that she was proud and grateful to her now-deceased mentor. Now it was time for her to give someone else an opportunity to become what he could. But oh, how she wished that he had something of value to offer. Something other than food ...

She stood back after signing and waited to see what would happen. She wanted to make sure that if she was to be contacted, she would be as available as she could be. She would take nothing for granted. She began to wonder even if something would happen, for the only ones to sign were women, and only three so far, including herself. A wait was definitely in order. She may yet have a chance at one of the other sponsors ...

She caught sight of the flyer as the wind carried it by her. She snatched at it and fumbled with it for a few seconds before getting a secure hold in the paper. She read it, and nearly tossed it away, dismissing it. A general flyer such as this would attract all sorts of riff-raff and want-to-be saviors of the land. She wanted adventure, but in a more unique way. Not as one of hundreds vying for the same prize, grand as it was.

But she didn't toss it, not right away. She simply stood and wondered. The new ruler would have to know what this would cause, and he did mention there would only be 4 sponsors. Would that mean only four "teams"? That would certainly lessen the competition and make it more of interest, and therefore more do-able ... She held on to the flyer, folded it and stuffed it into her pouch. It was only time wasted to check it out, and not wasted even then if it caught her interest.

And so she stands, gathered with numerous others in the courtyard mentioned in the flyer. Awaiting a presence, an announcement, a reason and/or a purpose ...

For a half-elf Barrb is tall. Very tall. Nearly six feet tall. Other than that, her appearance is rather average, even for a half-elf. Except for that one aspect, she would be considered nondescript, unremarkable, typical. Slender, she is, with light brown hair, a fair complexion, and hazel eyes. She has a small scar visible under her lower lip, just above her chin. A small scar from childhood. Her other, more numerous, scars are hidden by either clothing or armor. And a few scars also mar some of her memories.

For five years after she began her individual search for her 'niche', her place in the world, she worked as a castle guard for a noble, one Duke Plattius William. She would be there still, had she not refused his command to bed with him. He was known locally for his lecherous libido, and made no attempt to be discreet about his escapades. His affections were lavished as much among courtiers as they were among the commoners. Beauty was a prerequisite, but he wasn't strict about it. When summoned to his chambers herself, she had assumed it was for a special duty, and the smiles and snickers among the other guardsmen and -women when the word was spread were not heeded as the warnings they were meant to be. To make a long story short, she adamantly refused, he just as adamantly insisted, and she knocked him out. Knowing that the one act alone would kill any career she would wish to pursue in the local vicinity, she quickly packed and left. One of her fellow guardsmen gifted her with an extrememly well-made bastard sword as she packed her belongings. The entire guard agreed that she had only given the Duke his just reward, even though it was spontaneous and without thinking at the time.

Since her exodus from the castle guard, she has simply worked "odd jobs" as a blank shield, and just recently finished a stint as one of a company of mercenary guards protecting for a train of wagons for the Seven Stars Trading Company of Chondath, bound for Tethyr.

She's In Darromar.Because:
It has taken nearly a month for the wagons to reach the city of Darromar. It was here that she parted company with the Merchant-Traders on amicable terms, purposely not telling them that she has been bored to tears for the past month. She has spent the last few days "relaxing" (translates to: "drinking and carousing"). She keeps asking around for any word of adventure of the less mundane sort ...

ICEBREAKER
The shadows dance and cavort around the clearing you have chosen to make camp in. The late autumn breeze fights the mediating warmth of the campfire to send shivers down your spine. Daybreak will come soon, but the constant feeling of hungry eyes staring over you is enough to keep you from some much needed rest. Gazing out between the silent trees of the surrounding forest, a fleeting glimpse of movement darts from cover to cover, shadow to shadow…

Barrb would have rather made a cold camp, but she's thankful she had the fire going. The weather hadn't warmed up enough yet. It had turned cold enough to make her think about going over to Umm to unstrap the blanket so she could either wrap herself in it or or hold it up to use as a reflector to catch what little heat the fire was giving out. She looked affectionately at the big dun and smiled. He had been faithful, reliable, and sometimes cantankerous, but he had always been there. She wondered again whether she should find him a nice place that would pasture him in retirement. But then she would have to train another horse to work with her. With her, not for her. Umm was older than she normally liked a horse to be when she first purchased him seven years ago, but he redeemed himself by quickly learning what she required of him. No, not now. Not yet. He still has a few good years in him, and a willingness to spend them actively.

She was just about to stand when she noticed a movement in the darkness that seemed independent of the waving shadows of the moonlit trees. It was just barely within her peripheral vision, but noticeable. She purposely did not turn her head, but hesitated only briefly, then stood up, unhooking the peace-braid over the quillons of the sword as she rose to free her sword in case she needed it. She sauntered slowly over to Umm and made a show of unstrapping her cloak instead of a blanket. Draping the cloak over her shoulder to leave both arms free, she moved back to the fire, deliberately not looking toward the movement she had seen, pretending she hadn't seen it. As long as it stayed out there, it was as safe as it could be. Now that she was ready and wary, neither her fire nor her camp was safe for unwanted intruders.
