Subject: Many more questions.

I think I can see a few specific details and choice of words in the scenario which I feel certain are important...how yet I'm not entirely sure.

And so I'll simply barrage you with questions until I have a key clue. I trust that's okay?

Questions:

Was anything they consumed poisonous in some manner?

Were the ice cubes in the bourbon composed of anything besides an average mix of water and minerals in a usual ice cube?

Do the two cowboys know that each other is an enemy with the crimelord?

Are either cowboy aware that the crimelord is in Normalville?

Is the crimelord in some manner responsible for the death?

Is the cowboy that left first dead or injured in some manner?

Is one cowboy responsible for the other's death?

Subject: Lords...

Varis' face drained of colour in seconds as he mentally cursed himself for his lack of perception, his lack of thought. He, like DHarem, stood still, but spoke quickly from a dry throat, realizing as Walker had the potentially suicidal likelihood of running out swords drawn.

It occured to him to do so anyway, to run out shouting and throw caution to the wind, but he wasn't going to risk the lives of his companions or the hospital in the process.

"Bon, please, go outside subtly and see if they're still moving and you can find them, come back as soon as you manage. Don't be noticed." Varis spoke, refusing with an iron will to let his raging inner thoughts seep into his voice and words, watching his companion leave through the door, striding thankfully quickly but not an obvious sprint. Thank the Lords for Bon.

"We shouldn't assume anything, and if we can find them I'll try to find out what's going on peacefully. If it goes badly then you, DHarem, alongside Bon can cause a distraction with any Magemead we have, though don't destroy any part of this city unless necessary. Thomas, rush in beside me if things turn ugly, but stay back otherwise. Walker..." Varis spoke at speed up to now, but stopped for a second to look into the face of the near-total stranger, "...I can only beg for your aid if it becomes necessary. You are under no obligation, but I'd like you to stand by Thomas under the same strategy. Between the five of us, this may be possible to pull off...if the Councillor is still alive."

Varis fought the urge to swallow in terror. The same thoughts flashed through his head as they did before when he was throwing his magic into the councillor's body to save him. He did not almost kill himself to let the councillor die by Varis' own incompetence. He did not almost kill himself to still have to tell An'Jantar that his colleague and friend was killed.

Lords, please have the councillor still be alive.

Crystal did not take her eyes off Al'Ral, still ready to complete the spellcasting at will and waiting for one of the others to check. However, the absence of warmth from around her, a technique she dubbed "Hypothermia", was disappearing, though her body had already taken the toll.

Even as a Valsathavarian, she was getting to the point of just wanting to collapse into a hot bath. But if she had to kill one or two more assassins to do so, then so be it.

Pleased to meet you, and welcome to the Inn! I'm still rather new here myself, and had no roleplaying experience outside of a bit of tabletop Dungeons and Dragons.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, of course, I can safely speak for the vast majority on here to say that we're happy to help!

Don't forget that there's a lot to do and see on the orums even outside of the roleplaying games. Posting games, light chats...

Err...I'm rambling again. I do that. Moving on, though, hold onto this. You may or may not need it soon. ^^' (Hands you a white towel)

Crystal stood still for a moment, dangerously so, staring at the area where Verkoth lay moments ago.

[I assume the undead have become inanimate again? You didn't specify]

She turned her head slowly, her icy gaze falling on Al'Ral. Opening her mouth in an eerily silent shout, she mouthed some inaudible phrase as shards of ice suddenly shot from her stiff fingers at Al'Ral, sharpened as if each piece was an arrow or spearhead. She aimed them as best she could at his arms and shoulders, seeking to wound or pin rather than kill, at least immediately.

"You have about twenty seconds for either of you to justify yourselves with evidence before I snap your necks with a boulder of ice if you're not lucky, and drag you up before a court if you are."

Varis frowned as the Nurses left, about to decide whether to ask DHarem about the significance of those ribbons or whether to talk to one of the Scarlet Nurses to dig for more information, before Walker spoke up.

Varis turned to Walker, craning his head slightly upwards to look him in the eyes, his face a mixture of surprise and shock.

"Hey, now! Firstly, you don't even know who are or what we do." Varis exclaimed out of surprise, though not unkindly. Out of the corner of his eye, Varis glanced at DHarem, suddenly realizing that this man, Walker, may actually know what they do if DHarem had simply mentioned their status as mercenaries. Varis mentally cursed himself for knowing so little about these circumstances he's been thrown into. "Besides, I'm usually the one giving orders." Varis finished, though jokingly.

Varis thought for a second, before continuing.

"Night has long since fallen, so I'd have to agree, though. I can get us into a tavern both for a meal and some rooms at an excellent price; I know half the tavernkeepers in this entire city, and most of them owe me for all the business I've attracted. I think I've slept enough, though, and I have...someone I think I need to see before this night is out, but I can do that on my own." Varis spoke, looking at Walker for some sign of approval before turning to DHarem.

"Friend, what was it about those ribbons?"

Subject: A bit more information...

On the Q&A thread for this game I've got a couple of example "character sheets", purely in text on the forum, since I find it easier than electronic copies of everything. Filling one in would probably be easiest, though feel free to have a physical copy of an actual character sheet as well if you want. Most of the description of a character (backstory, exact appearance) is seperate to the character sheet anyway, and I don't reveal backstories on public copies of the character sheets, or indeed anything that a fellow player will not necessarily already know.

On the other recruitment thread for this game (there's two, you'll see why) linked to this, there's a huge collection of background lore, if you haven't seen it already. Fortunately, you don't have to memorise it all, but know it will always be there. The most important pieces of that page is the altered Pantheon of Gods (this game is set after a period known as the "God Wars", in which several Gods died) and the three major choice of backgrounds for your character...at least, which continent you were from.

Again, ask any question you need regarding character creation. How the different types of magic, well, differ in culture and use. What races are likely to be seen in which areas. What major cities, minor villages, nations or continents are there.

Don't feel overwhelmed, you don't need to memorise anything, again, besides the fact that some Gods from the handbook are dead and some new ones have been born.

Varis smiled out of the corner of his mouth, touched at the protective movements this man made, however subtly. Varis whispered, quietely enough so only DHarem and Walker could.

"You are no ordinary man, Walker. The only people I've seen who can prepare concealed weapons while appearing so casual are those who intend to rob an honest Bard on his leave of a Tavern, not those who would come to the aid of a sick man. I thank you for the gesture, but I may handle myself."

Varis smile grew broader, as he continued to speak, now in a normal tone.

"Ah. I fear I may appear something of a fool to you instead, then. Dancing around sensitive topics is something I've had to learn; people tend to tip people they like rather more. I will try to speak more directly with you, then, I admit it will be a relief. By the way, DHarem, there's no need for 'Lord' just because I've been briefly hospitalized."

Varis' pose suddenly changed subtly, from one in which he held himself high and polite, to the semi-slump of a casual bystander. He pointed out the figure in the knot of nurses.

"I would not be surprised at the guards. In amongst them is the Councillor for Magic of this city, I believe. I...do not know his personally, though I suspect I may have saved his life earlier today." Varis stopped, frowning, as if deep in thought for a moment, before continuing with a good-humoured smile, "There's no real way to say that you have saved someone's life while appearing modest, is there? In all honesty, I think I'm quite proud of myself. Talk about healing spells, though, DHarem? You didn't tell me where Karrain is now."

Thank you so much for the offer, and if you were to join, I would be overjoyed, but first ask me any more questions you like, you don't have to be limited to one.

Only a basic grasp of the 4th edition is completely necessary, pretty much a class with attributes and skills is the most important aspect. As you may see in the game already (albeit a short-lived tavern brawl) the major combat is primarily free-form. Though you cannot see in the forum, I use private messages to describe the outcomes and options to players seperately, such as the outcome of their checks or passive skills.

To answer your question, though (sorry for not getting to it immediately), I'm afraid I don't have the Divine Power book...

However, you are free to use it, as indeed you can even create your own feats or even class. As long as you give me all the necessary information that I do not already have, and I am able to limit or change what I consider too powerful or underpowered.

Again, feel free to ask any question you'd like. If I can expect a hopefully long-term player, then I at the very least owe them any answers they want.

Welcome! As always, it's great to have another patron of the Red Dragon Inn. I personally found myself here through Loaded Dice, which I in turn found from the forums of Order of the Stick (another D&D 3.5 themed webcomic).

I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said, besides that there should always be a game that's open. You have the advantage of knowing several editions of D&D well, after all. I only know the 4th Edition, myself, and it isn't commonly played. ^^'

Oh, I almost forgot. The towel you recieved is for practical purposes, but (hands you an extensive wine list) this is for taste.

Thanks. ^^ I'm surprised no-one else had joined in, yet.

Well, let me try something else...

Sora
Race: Human
Class: Swordmage (Forgotten Realms, 4th Edition)
Weapon Specialization: Longsword
Swordmage Swordbond: Keyblade
Description: Chosen wielder of the near-mythical 'Keyblade', young Sora is the bane of heartless and darkness. Though able to cast a variety of magics, most of his power is drawn from his weapon, which he can change the form of and summon to his hand at will.

Frankly, Sora from Kingdom Hearts is perfect for a Swordmage. In the 4th Edition, Swordmages can summon a weapon they've magically bound to themself at will (sounds like Sora), they're primarily Defenders in role (sounds like Sora), they use their swords as implements for their casting of spells (sounds like Sora) AND they obviously combine spellcasting and combat.

Sounds like...Sora. Do I smell a level of plagiarism? ...Nah. Still quite a coincedence, though.

Varis gave a hasty bow of respect to the man, shocked at the realization of how he must have sounded.

"My deepest apologies, Walker, for any offence I have caused by my ignorance, for none was intended. I can only thank you utterly for your efforts to bring this to us, and hope we can repay the favor at some point in time. I fear my knowledge of what happened at the time of the...battle, is little. My attention had been diverted, and I had been incapacitated, leading to why I am here at all. I feel that I must catch up on much with my companions... We may be very busy soon, if what happened is anything to go by, but if there is any way I can assist you, Walker, then just ask. Had circumstances been more casual, I would at the least insist on buying you a drink..."

Varis grimaced. He was not at his best, and still had almost no idea what had happened. Hopefully DHarem would be able to fill him in soon.

Well...this hasn't gone well.

As the only current player is a real-life friend, and as such somewhat defeats the purpose of a post-to-post forum game....

This adventure is on Hiatus until at least one new player offers to join. Several people have offered, but seem to have left the website since or changed their minds about a 4th Edition game.

Lore updates are also put on hold. I'll update them when the game begins to roll again.

Thank you, and please feel free to join if you're interested.

Hah, many a time I've thought of similar things. I have only glancing knowledge of 3.5e D&D (Gathered from Neverwinter Nights 2), but in-depth knowledge of 4e D&D. Not that it seems to matter.

Great idea, though. Here's a couple I can think of... Setting is most inspired by 4e D&D.

Starting with a SEGA character...

Shadow the Hedgehog
Race: Shifter
Class: Psion/Monk (Hybrid)
Paragon Path: Timebender
Greater Weapon Specialization: Unarmed Strike
Description: Savior of the world several times over, Shadow's stoic nature has unnerved more than a few. Capable of teleporting himself and others long distances through his powers, as well as being exceptional at hand-to-hand combat; Shadow is a fierce foe, though perhaps most well known for his ability to slow the passage of time around him.

And onto somebody completely different...

Darth Vader
Race: Human/Warforged (Blended)
Class: Battlemind
Paragon Path: Iron Guardian
Greater Weapon Specialization: Longsword
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Description: I...am your father.

Subject: Madness!

And still the fight continues, an insane medley of corpses, arrows and knives. And still Verkoth, regardless of the fact that all evidence 'against' him, almost, has been by the words of foreign strangers, is being attacked from all angles.

Regardless of his methods of fighting, he is still acting in self defense, and no-one appears to even question the other side. Lantaris has yet to back off his attacks, and Al'Ral, wherever he is, has clearly reunited with his accomplice Regarial in what is starting to look like a masterfully set out ambush, or assassination. And Takra...Crystal was proud of her, she was acting out of self-preservation, an admirable attempt no matter what happens.

Both sides have their excuses, Crystal was sure. But Al'Ral and Regarial are the ones who appeared out of nowhere and initiated this particular fight. Crystal knew where she stood. Her eyes shifted to the side as she dragged herself into a standing position once more after her close shave with the would-be fatal arrow, leaning on her staff as support. She stared at the area in the nearby street where she had sworn the arrow had come from. An invisibility spell?

Well, Verkoth seemed to be able to handle that fool priest on his own. Looks like this may be a chance to test her skills with IceShields...

"So you're Al'Ral." Crystal said simply to what looked like empty space, letting the frost that caused her bones to ache and skin to chill emanate from her body. Under such temperatures, her magic is easier and faster to shape.

Crystal did not say another word, or wait for a reply. She dropped her staff without warning, thrusting both hands forward as her staff clattered to the ground. She willed her magic into existence yet again, concentrating on the frost, thinking of the weight of the air increasing, the water of the body freezing, the slowing of all movement...she forced ice to gather and cling to any figure that was there, if any, focusing on where she expected hands to be. If accurate, at best, the ice will pierce his skin and form in the tendons of his fingers, disrupting bloodflow and causing permanent tissue damage in a form of Frostbite. At the least, she hoped his fingers will go numb, and have the texture as if covered in water or snow, making accurate shots with that bow next to impossible.

Of course, she'd have to change the intent of the spell into a brief shield of ice if he managed to get an arrow off faster than the spell could take effect.

Subject: This is your idea of Due Process?

Anger sometimes breaks like a dam. Or an avalanche. Either will do in Crystal's case.

"Fool!" Crystal screamed as she thrust the tip of her staff forward, willing frost into existence as a sheet of energy; a collapse of ice and magic designed to pummel a specific target from above. Not likely to be deadly in any circumstance, the falling of closely-arranged blocks of heavy ice is usually enough to batter a man to the ground, or at least bruise him or disarming him.

As the adapted Avalanche spell fell, Crystal shouted as her casting finished. [regardless of the outcome]

"Chances are still looking pretty good to me that Regarial is the one doing most of the lying, here, priest. Since I am not clearly under immediate attack by Verkoth, who's acting in self defense, I see no reason to fight against him with you, or indeed stand by and watch as you murder him."

Subject: Crystal's not ready to take a side yet.

As Lantaris an Regarial stumbled off-balance, Takra firing off a shot, Crystal didn't wait to see what affect her arrow took. She shifted to one side as the corpse she stood over began to rise, raising her staff threateningly into the air.

"Verkoth! What is the meaning of this!? Strike down the fool elf, Lantaris, in self defense if you must, but why hire Takra and I simply to kill us now? I am not your enemy here..." Crystal yelled across the plaza, icy winds now gusting around her, causing both clothing and hair to ripple and tousle. Necromancy may suggest the League, but these dead don't appear to be directly affliated with him...and Verkoth's choice of wording and actions feels abnormal for what Rege' claimed.

Ice began to form around the tip of her staff; a sphere that grew slowly as Crystal watched to see if the undead next to her began to show direct hostility.

She shouted once more, for measure.

"I am not your enemy!"

Subject: Something is wrong...and Crystal is pissed.

Something was wrong with the body.

"Hold it!" Shouted Crystal, directing her words to Verkoth...Rege' certainly wasn't in a position to do anything anyway. Her words contained a harsh authority that only a warmage could get - the authority that is obeyed by others for survival or out of sense, rather than legality and technical hierarchy. Appropriate, considering she definetly had no rank over either.

"Something is not right here..." Crystal was standing straight now. A detached part of her absently noticed what was happening, but would be helpless to stop her temper anyway.

"Rege' is either lying or mistaken. These men are unlikely to be direct soldiers of Verkoth's. Their weapons are not even of a remotely similar make or design to his." Crystal hissed. She felt cold...strange for such a temperate country that they were in. To onlooker's eyes tiny glimmers lay in her hair. Crystals of ice.

"And yet something else is wrong. Rege' did not kill this man, someone with a bow did. And yet he claims that he fought off these...Sevaraii, regardless. Which means..."

Even meters away, the group could feel the warmth being drawn from the air. At Crystal, her breathing now produced visible mist. For most, anger is a hot thing of adrenaline; For Crystal, it was a cold hatred. Her body wanted to shiver, to move. Instead she stood still, the cold wracking her body even as it just made her mind feel keener, sharper...Any lasting effect from her copious alcohol consumption that day was pushed aside. An Ice Mage doesn't need a bucket of ice water for a hangover cure.

Regarial may not be alone, here...if he is the enemy. If he had people backing him, then he was a fool to let himself into a hostage position like Verkoth had him in.

Subject: So many questions, so much talking...Varis rambles.

Varis stood silently for a second. This was it...the source of the magic. This man - whomever it was - was the source. A clear aura of magic. If Varis were to describe it to someone without magical potential, he would call it as if the air you breathed was as crisp as in a winter forest, yet warm like a temple lit by thousands of candles. It was...green? Just as heat brings red to mind, and cold brings blue, this felt...green.

And still it felt almost fleeting. Like something on the corner of perception. Varis almost forgot the feeling the second he stopped looking for it, leaving it some nagging corner rather than a tangible field.

Varis grinned, first at DHarem. He owed his first reply to his friend, clasping the seeker's shoulder in a hand to mirror the relieved greeting.

"Likewise, DHarem, it is good to see you safe and unharmed from the fight...if not for your actions, all would have been lost, I am certain. But what on earth happened to Thomas?" Varis asked, shocked at the sight of his clearly exhausted comrade, Thomas, almost reaching in to try to use a healing spell before finding his reserves of magic exhausted...that didn't normally happen. Instead, Varis continued with the questioning, "Have you discovered whom - or what - that...thing was? That tried to kill the councillor? What happened to Karrain; I thought I almost glimpsed him at some point before blacking out? What happened to the mage you fought, as well?"

Varis' grin faltered. Now that so many questions sprung to his head, he had the feeling that so many more questions have been raised than answers, like there was so much more to be done. There's much more to what's been happening than at first glance...why so much secrecy from so many seeming sides?

Varis smiled apologetically at DHarem, silently asking his friend to answer his questions later as the bard turned to the newcomer, taking this man's statements as more readily important than Varis' own, likely. This man that gave off such an aura had a curious accent...Ethronian? Varis had met a few of them in his performances through so many taverns, so he recognized the accent. Not Karrain's, though that can only be expected...accents don't remain the same for thousands of years.

Before speaking, Varis returned the man's bow, smiling, intrigued by the courteous individual.

"Yes, I am Varis, a Bard to some level by trade. I fear I cannot help but feel you have warned us too late, for DHarem recently fought a sorceror, but I certainly know of no 'Khan'. We have had a brush with this 'Equilibriate' before, though. Thank you for taking your time to deliver unto us this message, Mr...?" Varis drifted, politely awaiting the name of this man.

Varis' attention was briefly shifted to the procession moving by. He noticed something slightly strange about it, and spoke aloud for DHarem's benefit. In the past, DHarem had proved to have vast stores of knowledge, understandably for a Seeker...however stories, rumours and many years travelling have granted Varis a more hands-on knowledge of many things, as well as his excellent education, and he'd seen a march like this before before.

"Those nurses...the six who do not appear to be from this clinic...they march like those trained in the military. I've seen identical marches by New Smythian knights. Weren't they a private forces for one of Tithuana's noble houses? That's the impression I got when I last saw a parade of them through the streets. They're well educated, I happen to know personally...I saw a few in a tavern I performed at, and they knew more about the history of one of my songs than I did."
