Crystal's face twitched, an eyelid batted momentarily as she stared at the checkpoint ahead, before speaking without moving her eyes.

"Takra." Crystal spoke softly, a hint of desperation evident, "Takra...what do you want out of this? What are your intentions and desires, and how far are you willing to go for them? I need to know."

(Reok's POV)

The gentleman looked at the equal-heighted Barbarian, appearing surprised at the unexpected interruption. A human of some wealth; his fine clothing alone displaying that.

"Ah...which Library is it that you seek? Nearest to here, your best bet would be the waterfront Library and Ahrân shrine, about an hours walk to the north of here on the Western side of the bay." The man helpfully responded, even though he hid his discomfort at the armed man's proximity poorly. Strangely, it did not stop him from continuing to aid Reok.

"The largest one in the city by far, though, is the Great Library, adjacent to the Tower of Bahamut's Rest, the smaller of Arvale's two great towers, well over 12 hours of travel, unless you hire alternate transport such as a wagon."

--------

(Matrim's POV)

Matrim left the ship without further delay, seeing no-one on the deck as he walked over to the gangplank leading back to the docks. The Great Library was some distance away, he knew from experience. His trip to the docks was an overnight event as it was. If he intended to walk back, he knew he'd need to stay at one of the famous 'Waystation' Taverns of the city, designed to cater for those taking or desiring to take various methods of travel throughout the massive city as well as having foods and bedding appropriate to a great variety of races and cultures.

Alternatively, Matrim knew there would always be other places where he would be welcome to stay.

Subject: Who here has heard of the MMORPG Guild Wars?

I am an avid video gamer, and always have been...strangely, that led to Dungeons and Dragons more recently in my life, rather than the other way around.

But the upcoming game I look forward to above all others, by miles upon miles, is the sequel to one of (in my opinion) the greatest MMORPGs of all time. No, not World of Warcraft, but Guild Wars.

Perhaps it will take too long to explain Guild Wars' genius to those who aren't video gamers and/or haven't already played it, but for those that aren't already stalking every fact about Guild Wars 2 (such as myself) then simply watch on youtube: "Guild Wars 2 Manifesto Trailer" to get an idea about this fantastic game.

So come on, who else knows of Guild Wars, and is pumped and ready for the sequel Arenanet is doing all in its power to perfect?

Subject: Okay.

Well, I suppose 4th Edition is my specialty...or rather, a part of my capabilities, unlike most editions.

I'm not certain I could juggle another game in addition to all that I currently do. I do play in a game that appears to have (at least temporarily) fizzled, but I can't rely on that.

I suppose I'm saying (in a roundabout manner), that if you need an extra player, I'll be happy to join, but I can't be certain about how often I'll post (once every one to two days, with any luck).

Anyway, in case I do play: expect a Shaman. Probably a Deva, too...and I am fully aware of the unusual class/race mixture, there. Backstory and deeper character details will be produced if I join the game.

Even if you get enough players without me, good luck!

Topic: Memorable NPCs?
Subject: Ah...

A current DM whom I game with, both on and offline, clockwork demise, has made some fairly notable NPCs in his games. From the hilarious to the unusual to the flat out cruel.

I think, all things said and done, though, his most notable NPC to me is probably Grendar (or Grendarr, I'm not sure). A drow and an uncle to an ex-NPC now player character (long story) that I now play. Impossible to predict, ranging from unusual changes of heart from bouts of guilt or goodwill to acts so harsh they deserve the title of evil, the only thing that is certain about the one-eyed evil uncle is that you can't be certain of him.

In the past, he has successfully tricked us into giving him a powerful artifact, shot his niece (my character) with two crossbow bolts having seen straight through her Cloud of Darkness with his magical artificial eye when she tried to escape, been seen allied or pitted against several other villains and giving us key pieces of information even as he hinders our allies.

Basically, he's done little to harm us directly (I should point out by now that this is an ongoing game that he's from), but much to slaughter the people who are on our side.

Subject: Another Valsavatharian? Half the population must be here...

Crystal stopped, mentally balking for a second in surprise, before giving him a short bow from the shoulders up. She hid her feelings behind a mask as she stared into his face, searching for any trace of familiarity...both whether she had met him before, or whether he appeared to recognise her or her name.

'How much does he know?' Crystal thought, a seeping feeling of sickness laying into her limbs. A common feeling, and a common thought, when she meets a mage from her kingdom. The number of Valsavatharian mages didn't even hit four figures, after all. 'Does he recognize me at all? By face, by name, or by the...incident?'

"A pleasure, Malthorne of the Vanguard." Crystal returned politely, if stiffly. If nothing else, a member of the Valsav Vanguard deserved such respect, "Thank you for the permission, though I assure you I'm not fool enough to try to piss his majesty off."

Crystal didn't bat an eyelid, but prepared to move on. She had no desire to carry a conversation with another mage, not if it will inevitably lead to questions. Besides, they had a far more important task ahead.

That said, it would be foolish to rudely walk away from one who held a technical higher rank.

Topic: Our favorite custom races!
Subject: Well... (long post)

I'm not certain how 'valid' it is as a RACE, per se, but I have created, rather recently, a new 'state of being' per se. That is to say, in the same way as "Lichdom" COULD be a race, or being a Vampire...or even a God/Demigod, I suppose.

It's actually still in planning stages, and I'm cautious what I'll post...because it actually might be relevant in the game I'm currently DMing on this site. But essentially, though I have yet to finalize a name for the race, but essentially is a state of being that was unintentionally created after a God is killed. Originally those of this race were almost unheard of...a few surviving ones existed in all of the realms, but since an event known as the God Wars, they have appeared in enough of a number to be recorded and written of, and so certain scholars or mages may know enough about them to consider them a geniune race.

Essentially, a 4e race, not intended to be playable by any means, and something of a counterpart to a 4e Epic Tier Monster Race: The Forsaken.

In most cases, when a god dies, the near-infinite energy that composes most of its being, and also the spring of energy that can be channelled by certain followers (hence the existence of Invokers, Clerics, Paladins, etc, who use their 'divine spark' to collect and channel the energy that their god gives them), dissapates....though violently so, when a god is slain by violence. A rare occasion, to be fair.

The vast majority of a Gods devoted follower's with a Divine Spark are killed instantly in the aftermath, the backlash. Some get away with varying degrees of injury, sickness or mental scarring. Many lose connection to their divine spark, some consider theirs lost, destroyed with their god. Some remain either lucky or strong enough to devote themselves to another God, and still be able to use their Divine Spark to continue to channel energy if their new God grants them such power. Many simply go mad, often dangerously so.

However, a tiny portion suffer a different fate. Rather than a whole part of them being ripped away, or struck in a backlash, some of the most powerful mortal followers of a God, the 'closest' to their God (such as a High-Priest, perhaps, or some similar level) find themselves in some way taking some part of the explosion of energy. The circumstances are rare, and are varied in how they can come about or effect someone. An example may be a High Priest of an evil, treacherous god, and the priest himself seeks to steal some of his Gods power in his Gods last moments. Another may be a priest of a Good God, whom in a last-ditch attempt to save some shard of his deity will open himself subconsciously as a 'storage', a haven for his God's being, in a desperate attempt to protect his own deity.

Whatever the reason, the results are often not pretty. Imbued with an element of a God, their own personalities or even mind can be completely obliterated, or at least pushed aside. As with normal clerical or paladin followers of a god that dies in such a manner, some of these 'imbued' will lose their sanity. In fact, most will. Some will grow violent, some will be left mindless, a rare few will grow to embody some aspect of the vestige of their god that they carry, an even rarer few will be able to survive relatively sane and 'normal' even after an experience. Regardless of what happens to them, all of these 'imbued' carry one thing in common. A terrifying capability for destruction, or at least be capable of great feats of power.

Depending on the God, and the follower, and the circumstance, so many things can happen. I have much more detail about the race, such as the 'lifespan', the limitations to their power, and what their motives often are or can be. But even as much detail as I've gone into here, I won't go any further lest I give my players undue advantage in my game later on.

As Ferr spoke, Tryaen finally selected a page from his held book, signalling that he was still listening by frequent glances back at Matrim. As Matrim finished, Tryaen raised his eyebrows, raising his eyes from his tome.

"Well, how remarkably vague. Well, that more or less throws out my estimation as to the 'interested parties' you spoke of, if you insist upon secrecy which the one I'm thinking of would have no reason for."

"Now...Matrim Ferr, you said? This is the most complete collection of merchants, nobles, priests and other notable family names and family histories that I know of for this country...and I find very few mentions of any 'Ferr' family. So you're no noble...but it doesn't sound like a Paradisian name, at least. Still, that leaves how you came by equipment of such value out of my knowledge, besides these 'benefactors'. Regardless, I suppose I must accept your generous offer of refusing payment and accept your need for secrecy. Your actions do not speak of a malicious or treacherous man."

Tryaen finally closed the book, placing it back on the shelf beside him. A strange mix of a smirk and a grimace was on his face.

"Consider yourself a member of the crew, Matrim Ferr. We leave at the end of the month in two weeks. Well, considering my unintentional interrogation - of which I apologize for - do you have any questions for me in turn?"

Crystal had to physically resist the temptation to slap her forehead. A bluff, even if it was necessary, as weak as that is akin to walking towards the guard with sword drawn. Screaming. On fire. Naked.

Crystal supposed she should intercede before the soldiers attack them or something.

"Excuse me, priest." Crystal grumbled as she stepped past Lantaris, raising slightly on her toes in an attempt to stare down on the corporal, making sure her staff was visible. "Soldiers. I am Crystal Hardwood, Journeymage of the Valsavatharian Kingdom. Trained Warmage of the kingdoms of Coast." Crystal added the last sentence with a trace of vehemence, making sure the soldiers knew what that meant. She spoke as one who expected her orders to be followed...a talent useful for one who's battlefield role is to keep the less magically adept that surround her from dying.

"I trust there is no problem, Corporal? I find myself in a position of utmost urgency to speak with my King, and I am authorising the movements of these people who will accompany me."

Crystal continued to stare. The mage-military chain of command is not a rigid construct, and varies greatly between kingdoms; but it is usually considered within the best interests of a Corporal to defer to the authority of a Journeymage.

Ah, in all honesty, I knew you were male but I only realized it relatively recently, I'm afraid. I agree, it doesn't change how I view you, but it is more or less down to your username, I think.

I've had that problem all of the time, including on this site when I first joined...err...not all that long ago.

In my case, I've been told (on this site) that the assumption that I'm a female is/was because that my username ends in an 'a', giving it a feminine edge. I realized how often I'm mistaken for female on online games, too, once even mistaken for the girlfriend of a friend.

Don't be worried, though. I certainly wouldn't treat ya any differently regardless of gender.

By the way, thanks for this thread, since it means I can also point out that yes, I'm a guy, if it matters. Still, since I actually chose an Avatar I haven't had that problem.

Reok's pace never slowed; a half-days walk meant little to the Barbarian. He was far from alone at any time, all manners of races and professions of people walking through the streets, as wood was replaces by mortar and brick, and the cobbled roads became less worn as he left the waterfront completely. It was clear the major races of the city, though. Humans and Dragonborn, as history has always shown in this part of the continent. However, one would be hard pressed to find another human city in which so many minotaur and orcs also walked, wearing well-woven cloth and carrying the tools of tradesmen or messengers like so many humans and dragonborn, not weapons and armor.

Indeed, more glances at Reok were due to his weapon than his injury. Still, no-one stopped him or gave him any trouble, and he felt the slight stirring or the restless spirits that clung to him, but transmitting no rage at the moment.

Though...it was interesting. For such a city, the surrounding, latent Primal Spirits were far from reclusive or dead. Even Reok could tell.

-----------

As Matrim followed the scholar into the small cabin, he instantly noticed the importance of the man, even on such a small ship. A clearly expensive bed, however small it may be, a selection of chests and footlockers, as well as shelves of tomes, texts, scrolls and books along the walls - a 'fence' like bar of wood on the front of the shelves and weighted bookstops on the sides to keep the books in place even in the case of a storm at sea. A small idol was also placed along the windowsill opposite the door, in front of the currently closed curtains. A well-crafted statuette of an aged Dragonborn holding a staff high, wearing billowing robes; a small shrine to Sra-Amun.

There was an armchair; a surprisingly basic wooden construction with a single cushion somehow attached that couldn't possibly be all that comfortable at sea. It did appear to be either heavily weighted at the legs or attached to the floor, for the same reason as most things in the cabin.

Going over to a bookshelf, Tryaen frowned as he ran his fingers over what was there, looking for something.

"Feel free to sit on the bed or chair, whichever is more comfortable, Ferr. There is no need to rush, for I fear the expedition is not for two weeks yet, as I mentioned to Reo. Anyway, I'd like to know about what these 'interested parties' you speak of seek. I can think of several possibilities off the top of my head, but there's no need for secrecy if it is one and the same as the one funding this expedition." Tryaen suggested, though not seeming overly suspicious.

"Of course, what man-at-arms experience you have I am interested in. You're no Paladin of the Temple of Sra-Amun, or I would have been told of you beforehand, and your armor is of an excellent make, so I can't imagine you being allowed to take it with you if you had it for military duty. And if you bought it yourself, you don't sound like a traveller or foreigner, so perhaps you came from a rich family?" Tryaen finished. He was certainly an open book of information, more or less. He was perceptive and insightful, but if someone wanted to trick him, he'd also be a fool for stating everything he already knew.

As he waited for a reply, Tryaen finally found a tome he was clearly looking for, taking it out of the shelf gently and beginning to leaf through the pages for something.

Topic: Debate: Spell Immunities
Subject: My two cents...

As a player, I don't personally like it when particular character abilities or traits I've worked for or towards are discarded for certain circumstances. Yet, as a DM, I understand such a need.

I assume you're talking about 3.5 or earlier edition, and I'm merely good with 4th Edition. But I do think that you can work just about anything you want or need to do, as long as you set up the circumstance correctly. For example, lets say (somehow) said Paladin was actually going up against a God or something, then I don't think a single sensible player would expect a normal immunity to work, sure.

However, especially if its merely some item...perhaps if you work in previously a slow weakening of the Paladin, or a quick one. For example, he was cursed by somebody before finding the book? Or else the book wore away very, very slowly? Perhaps, somehow, he loses the powers his god grants him, or at least have them drained or weak, perhaps due to where he is, such as a particular realm?

Basically, if you can work in a more specific reason than 'a powerful artifact', then your players may be more accommodating, if they normally give you problems. But, of course, it's completely up to each individual DM to do and play as he chooses and wants.

Reok could still feel the effects of the Dragonclaw plant running throughout his body. It's healing acted as a painful pleasure, in many ways, as if claws were raking his insides, but also scratching terrible itches at the same time.

Still, it seemed to work, his strength was already returning, and the anaesthetic-like effect of Tryaen's magic was comforting to his aching bones.

Reok was leaving the docklands, making his way slowly through the remarkable variety of races and cultures that is Arvale as he did so. Few gave him more than a second glance, though most were polite enough to give the clearly injured man walking space, so Reok did at least not have to be jostled along in some great flowing crowd.

In all fairness, Reok had not spent enough time in the city to know where the major library of the city was. Common sense, however, would point to it being near one of the two great towers of the city that marked its governing centers, the towers visible in clear weather from any corner of the nation-sized city. To Reok's eyes, the two towers held merely minor differences in terms of appearance; Certainly, their ridiculous height would make them impractical as defensive constructs, but such a use would be unlikely in buildings so far from the borders of the city.

Of course, their height also tended to skew a casual onlooker's sense of scale. The nearest one alone would take almost half of the day to walk to.

Okay, well, a few things I should point out.

Firstly, I will be unable to post on Saturday for me, and possibly Sunday, so there will be slight delays.

Secondly, don't worry, this conversation with Tryaen won't be too in depth. Save some character development for on the trip! (P.S. Any character material kept secret from other players can be done between the player and myself in Private Messages, which I will keep saved if ever they need to be looked back upon.)

Thirdly, Reok's overall bodily state is healing, as Tryaen said, at a remarkable pace. If you find a seat somewhere, then within an hour his skeleton will be as good - or better - than new, though his exterior wounds will still pain for a few days.

Fourthly and finally - bonus experience for Matrim for excellent character POV roleplaying.

As Tryaen nodded Reok off, he turned quickly, as if surprised, towards Matrim, before a grin appeared on his face.

"Ah, don't ever hesitate or be sorry to interrupt, I'm happy to answer any questions you have. You misunderstand, we speak of a friend of mine who goes by the name Pity Fortune. It's common for Tieflings to name themselves after an emotion or element of psyche, of course." Once again, Tryaen stopped to think for a moment, before continuing. Matrim recognized the scholar was choosing his following words carefully.

"I would not be overly surprised if you have heard of the Fortune family, as you appear excellently educated, but they do merely have a certain...modicum of historical fame. Regardless, my friend Pity has a habit of both taking and causing offense, I fear, and I can only hope that it does not prove too much for Reok or Pity himself over the course of the trip."

"But come, we can discuss more while we sit..." Tryaen offered, making his way to the door to his cabin at the bow of the ship.

Varis did not even think. He felt no dread, sickness nor guilt. Nothing but rage, as his body ran forward, yelling as he swung his sword, arcing through the air towards the remaining Smythian.

He did not even conciously command his body to run, nor to attack. His mind merely replayed event over event in his mind. Time and time again he had the chance to stop this happening, to save the councillor, to fulfill what he promised his employer and friend.
