Subject: Time to earn his bread...and the tavernkeeper's forgiveness.

Varis opened his mouth, before closing it again. Twice in a single day he has been knocked speechless, and he feels, suddenly, that it won't be the last. Finally he laughed at Karrain's final words.

[Immolations? Frostlocks? Geez, that puts my lighting candles to shame...]

"Yeah, a few thousand years sounds about right. Good to know you have a sense of humor, it's something that was lacking outside of DHarem and I. Well then, as to your power, I fear I have to ask that you stick to whatever you can control while in the city. Any damages are coming out of your salary...or in this case, rather, you'll be limited to water for however long seems necessary. I presume you can cast under pressure without too much collateral damage?"

"Well, regardless, we were about to leave after this round of drinks to prepare for our upcoming job. In two Strikes we must meet in the nearby Square. If you know the way already, or you don't get lost easily, you're welcome to wander in that time. I can always give you the money for a map of the city, after all. Alternatively, you may await here with Thomas, sampling what this...errm...fine establishment has to offer, or may tag along with Bon, DHarem or I. We leave the options up to you, Sir Unzual."

Varis thought for a second, before a strange smile graces the edge of his lip, an...unusual gleam in his eye recognized by all who sat at the table but Karrain.

"Now, we haven't had the most relaxing time in this Tavern. But as long as it's around lunch, and patrons are filing in...I think we nonetheless owe the barkeep some, for our surprisingly excellent drinks...and for the disruptions and," -Varis sent a sidelong glance to DHarem- "Damages we have caused. After all, we haven't been kicked out, so..."

Varis stood, retrieving his hand-harp from the table and stretching his arms, rejuvinated from the aches of his early-morning walk.

"You and DHarem work out the specifics of what you wish, Karrain. I have a....reputation to uphold, outside of being a mercenary." Varis cryptically described, moving over to an empty table in the corner of the Tavern-the same where the Councillor previously sat-and climbing onto it, perching easily-unfazed by the increase in height. As heads turned to look in interest, he plucked a couple of notes, twisting various parts of his harp with an expert's touch as he tuned it to perfection, clearing his throat...

His feet began to tap a beat onto the table, surprisingly loud notes that reverberated through the tavern unusually well...

(Slow, melancholous notes strum over the harp in the bard's hands...)
*There once was a tale,
-a hero of Old!
The look of the brave in his eeeeye...*

(A sudden increase a tempo, full chords punctuating every sung line)
*A sword at his belt!
A bow on his back!
And spells that have yet to let fly....*

(A slowing yet again, a series of notes punctuated by taps on the wood beneath the bard's feet)
*The young idolized him,
while the old prized him,
A hero of rich and pooor!*

*A soldier by heart,
A leader by soul,
And a Tithuanian evermooore!*

(Returns, beginning to repeat the original tempo)
*There once was a woman,
-a gem among stones!
The lady of purest liiight.*

*With speed at her heel!
And daggers of white!
A beautiful, deadly, siiight...*

*Monsters had feared her,
and men had revered her,
A glamour in all for suuure...*

*A lover at heart,
A fighter by soul,
And an Ethronian evermoooore!*

***

(Varis continues his song, detailing the ballad of a Tithuanian and Ethronian hero and heroine, who met on the field of battle long ago, when all Ethronians were far more warlike than many are now, and fell in love against all odds. Tragedy struck not long after marriage as they were both killed, each dying to save many citizens of the other's country, citizens they had once sworn to conquer, slay or defeat.

It is a song that DHarem has heard Varis perform before, unlike the newer arrivals of Bon, Thomas and Karrain. However, the song is not an entirely unknown one, and one Bon or Thomas may have heard before from other sources, unlike the ancient mage.)

Subject: To sum up...

“I will let our leader fill you in on that. Whilst I see what is taking so long at the bar.”
_

Varis rolled his eyes behind DHarems back, mentioning in a quiet voice to his new acquantance.

"Yeah, this can only end badly for this establishment, if it's anything like last time he went to check what was 'taking so long'." Varis half-joked, before suddenly leaning forward.

"Now, as my companion was saying. We've very recently taken on a job. Not our first, but I fear you may have to curb your excitement if you were expecting a fight." Varis said, conviniently ignoring the distict lack of particular excitement on Karrain's face, "We're watching over a...debate of sorts, a Duel of Knowledge, but I'm not certain you're aware of Tithuanian culture to that extent, at least in this day and age. Guard duty, essentially, but for an old friend of mine that suspects something sinister at work." Varis said, idly playing with a single electrum coin that he picked up from the ground, flicking it through his fingers-one of many useless talents gained from so long spent traversing taverns.

"Now, on a technicality basis, we're preparing for the utter worst, largely because I want this to go well for personal reasons. If anything, having a properly-and clearly-powerful mage is a great relief. Come to think of it, what areas do your talents cover? Detection of magic, prevention of it? War magic, enchantments? Healing?"

Subject: Oppurtunity...business!

Varis, for once, was the first to react at the startling preposition, feeling his shock finally melt away as he smelt something that only the son of a merchant would ever be able to smell.

Oppurtunity. Business.

And with that, Varis made yet another of his characteristic bows to the strange arrival.

"You recognise us as mercenaries? Well, Karrain Unzual, your talents are welcomed here. Indeed, we would be honored to have such a...unique individual with us. Your Magic from Without, if I am correct as to the origin of your powers, would be invaluable, I am certain...and even if you do not require financial reimbursion, we can promise you rooms if you require them, food and drink. There is a certain level of risk, of course..." Varis trailed off, letting the strange mage fill in the rest, now that the basics are nailed down.

Well, it seems Clockwork has arrived...spectacularly. ^^'

In other news, though, Varis casually putting such a large sum on the table more or less tells you a bit about the character. Intelligent and Charismatic or not...he lacks certain elements of simple sense, wisdom. Largely in part that he's been so lucky in his life he's never needed to learn such sense in some cases.

Subject: M-my....electrum piece?

Varis staggered, standing up, his chair haivng been knocked over in the blast. Holding a hand to his head, he stared in amazement at the strangely dressed foreigner, shooting DHarem a look of utter confusion as way of a reply to his glance.

"M-," The bard stopped, dzed as he tried to re-order his words, fighting to ignore the fact that this...wizard, managed to appear from nowhere between them in an explosion and shouting about some ancient academy. Finally, Varis continued, "My...electrum piece? I confess to...some...confusion, good sir. Um. Karrain Unzual, was it? How...what is this about?" Varis spluttered, his composion gone.

[Sacrelarch Mage? What type of magic puts someone into a piece of electrum?] Varis thought in wonder, barely noticing Bon and Thomas being the only ones to scramble to retrieve the electrum not already grabbed by other Tavern-goers.

Subject: We've got a basic plan, for now.

"-and so that's when we have to be at the main square, any questions?" Varis finished explaining to the group, having told them of his friend, Councillor Ulrick, and the proposition. Seeing no immediate queries on his companion's minds, he continued.

"I suggest in the time left we split up. I have to have a few things checked as soon as possible, and see what equipment I can bring. As long as we're being paid so well, and considering this IS for a friend of mine, I'd prefer us to be over-cautious rather than unprepared...so with that in mind, I'd prefer it if at least one of us checked out the main square well in advance. Bon, if you don't have any disagreements, you would be perfectly suited to spot anything we may miss." Varis started, offering the job to Bon. Before Bon responded, Varis moved onwards, turning to DHarem.

"Or you as well, DHarem, if you get the time, but otherwise bring anything you have that may help, or else search to see if you can find anything else about this...foreigner. Don't take any needless risks without us there, though. I'll see if I can pick up any rumours of this "Red Revolutionary Revolution", myself, and see how well known this upcoming Duel of Knowledge is, considering it concerns a councillor." Varis stopped, thinking for a second, "If you still have the time...you'd probably be better suited to finding out about these...Equilbriates. Finding secret agencies by rumours, stories and the public isn't as easy as finding revolutionaries with my talents."

Finally, Varis turned to Thomas, "And you...well, you're free to wander the taverns or stores, Thom. Make sure you're at the square well ahead of time, though." Varis shrugged as he gave the warrior free reign.

"Oh, and before I forget..." Varis placed three meticulously equal piles of electrum on the table, leading the others to suspect magic playing a hand in such fast arrangement of coin, "800 electrum for each of you for this job. Spend it or save it as you will. That works out, 800 from 2500...each of you have 32% share of the advance payment for this job, on the record. I'll take the final 4% share, not that I need it."

Varis crossed his arms, leaning back in his chair. Varis was excellent with numbers, naturally, as the son of a wealthy merchant, but his Father would have been shocked to see Varis practically giving away far greater shares of a payment that was necessary. Varis grinned at the thought, waiting to hear what the other's thought of it all.

Tut tut, helping us out so obviously with the mage tower. ~_^ I'm expecting things won't always be so clear, though. ^^'

Anyway, Varis has placed down his plan for the next couple of strikes. If anyone in the group has any differing plans or ideas, they're welcome to mention them. I think it can be assumed from previous jobs together that Varis has been proven wrong many times over.

Varis inwardly sighed, moving over to his seat, collapsing in relief. Nothing else was going to stop him from doing so. Reaching across for his untouched ale, he laid back, letting the drunk say whatever he thought was wise to the group of mercenaries.

[Note to self, don't come back to this tavern] Varis thought in annoyance, drinking from his tankard.

Varis practically stared at DHarem for a few seconds, before raising his eyebrows in understanding.

"You're right...I didn't recognise that. What's all this about a 'right arm', though? It seems to just be one suprise after another in this taver-"

"Excuse me, I have an important business propostion for you. I have the world-famous Luck Sticks! Fifteen El' apiece, guaranteed to bring the greatest luck ever when snapped! My stocks are limited, so buy as many as you can, and tell your friends!"

Varis stopped, frowning for a second at being interrupted, reminded once again of his recurring theme of aching ankles, and a desire to sit down...now mixed with a dryness in his throat for his ale that he had waited so long to taste.

[Ach, it's probably warm now anyway.] Varis thought in annoyance, placing yet another of his perfected smiles onto his face as he turned to look at the newcomer. More boy than man, the youth's bright eyes betrayed suprisingly little of his character...besides obvious enthusiasm, misplaced or not.

However, Varis suddenly grinned.

"Hah, I'm no stranger to good fortune...but what the hell. Throw each of my companions one." Varis shrugged, pulling out a few handful of electrum from his belt-pouch, shifting through the tiny coins to get a rough estimate of 45 out.

Not that Varis believed that the sticks held any geniune luck-giving properties about them, but the bard certainly didn't lack for funds, and it's nice making the boy's day with such a sum, even if it is a con.

"Well DHarem..." Varis began, grinning, "The triple-R, eh? Seems we have a fanclub already."

Varis did not move. Indeed, he held his face in the careful perfect diplomatic expression of polite interest he had worked on for so long. An expression that gave away none of the considerable flare of anger that the stranger's offer evoked in every fibre of himself.

Varis was perfectly silent, holding himself still as he awaited DHarem's reply to this...treacherous offer. He trusted DHarem, but was interested to see what would come up. DHarem's views on politics was something Varis was in the dark about...

Regardless, this may be interesting to see.

Quick question about XP, do we get experience for, say, passing checks every now and then? Directly, that is, or spectacularly passing them?

Also, by the way, Mysterion, Varis had said that it took a while for the soreness to pass when DHarem last put *him* in that position. Mind you, I can edit my post if you'd prefer.

Varis raised his eyes at what he saw inside...a small rock, with a distinctly...yellow tinge. Varis frowned, tearing his eyes away from the stone, realizing he waas staring...unhealthily at it, instead leaning his head on the cold surface of a nearby street-wall.

He closed his eyes, frowning, trying to focus through the sudden dizziness. He felt as if his own magic had left him, as if pushed away by some force, something...not-magic. He lifted his head back from the wall, determinedly closing the bag. "Not-Magic"...that's the best way he could describe that...thing.

Varis sighed, leaning his head against the wall again. After the madness of the last few minutes, he was glad of the cold, solid surface. Still, the cold was the primary thing that eventually drove him back inside the tavern some time later...

Leaving him raising his eyebrows at the scene before him. Leaning on the doorway, he called out to his companion, grinning as he did.

"Under attack again, are we, DHarem? Well, go easy on him. Last time you did that to me it took a week for the soreness to pass." Varis joked, raising his eyebrows.

Varis blinked, filing the figure's mannerisms into his mind. Varis may, perhaps, never reach the same level of perception and distinct memory that DHarem displayed, but even from so short a conversation, he knew more distinctly how to approach the person next time.

"Some 'secret' organization. Equilibriates, huh? Sounds like what songs are made of, isn't that right?" Varis muttered, turning to see a wry grin on Bon's face...and Councillor An'Jantar gone.

Varis frowned, before shrugging, walking over to the dropped bag.

""Intentionally cryptic". Hmm, that'd make a good poem, too. Go and join DHarem, I'll be with you in a second." Varis mentioned, somewhat absently. He was tired, back in the cold without a cloak and back on aching feet, the pain returning now that the original adrenaline rush had faded. As Bon returned to the tavern, Varis walked over, looking to either side before picking up the bag, warily loosening the drawstring to peer inside, comforted that regardless of what it contained, if it was dangerous then it was, at least, well away from his companions.

Subject: A diplomat with a drawn sword in his hand is not a diplomat.

Varis practically skidded to a halt, seeing the figure so clearly disarming him-or her-self. Varis hadn't seen anything like the person before, but he had a sneaking suspicion that the sword embedded into the ground could be back in the figure's hand in seconds, from their speed beforehand.

Varis's hair prickled, wary of the possibility of someone attacking from behind them nonetheless, though calmed when he noticed DHarem's intent, wary glances. If anything came at them, he trusted either of his companions to know, but having DHarem at his back was particularly comforting.

Good thing there were others there, as a diplomat with a drawn sword in his hand is quite simply not a diplomat. Varis sheathed his weapon, spending a couple of second re-buckling it to his belt, nodding his thanks to DHarem and Bon for their backup. He glanced behind him to see the Councillor, utterly unharmed and somehow seeming not to have heard anything, still walking off.

Varis let out an inward sigh of relief, his fear of the figure being an assassin of some kind allayed...for now, anyway.

Varis bowed as he approached the figure, his voice changing to the carefully-pronounced one of a person whom was trustworthy and polite.

"My deepest apologies. You startled us with your speed. May I ask as to your name, or occupation, good sir? I am Varis Caese, and these are of my mercenary band, Hunter Bon and Seeker of Knowledge Dharem."

Something clicked in the back of Varis' mind. He didn't know anything about this person, but there was the possibility...

"Also, may I ask if you, perhaps, are the foreigner who it is rumored will be taking a Duel of Knowledge with a councillor of this city?" Varis spoke carefully, hiding how unnerving the masked figure was. He suddenly dared not look away from the figure to check to see if An'Jantar had heard him.

Varis seems to freeze for a brief instance, his eyes suddenly following something across the tavern, widening.

Suddenly he races, without stopping to think, to the table where the rest of the group is sitting, grabbing his sheathed sword where it lay conviniently on the table with a hand and hooking underneath DHarem's arm, dragging him up from his seat with the other hand.

A frenzied whisper escapes his lips to Bon and DHarem, "Come ON! Now!", before the bard, heedless of his pack, drink or armor, dashes to the exit of the tavern , drawing his sword with a *rrriinng* as he does so.

"Hey, politicians are supposed to be good at accepting gifts!" Varis laughed, "But regardless, thank you. I'm sure Thom-the one now lying safely on the ground will be thilled, as well as Bon, the one whom I have just learned of his talents with a tankard. DHarem will probably relish the oppurtunity to observe such a Duel of Knowledge, himself."

Varis absently traced circles on the wood of the table with his finger.

"Well, I won't keep you. If all goes well, DHarem and I will learn a few things, and Thom and Bon will get a well above average payment." Varis said, rising from his chair before making yet another good-natured bow. "And, of course, allow me to officially declare this job accepted on behalf of our mercenary band."

Varis placed a gentle, comforting hand on the back of the councillor's arm.

"Very well. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrogate you. Keep my share of the advance payment, if nothing happens at the duel, you can call it just a free favor from me. It's the least I can do, for the work you've given me before...regardless of how it turns out. So...give me the details. When and where. You have my word we'll be there."
