Yeah, it usually took me about an entire term to get back into the routine...and then it was holidays again!

Three should be fine, although I'm happy to take more players in should they be interested.

Topic: The Scarred Continents: A Grail of Blades
Subject: A little more lore

Speaking of Backstories, I feel that I should explain a little more about Sylvor, as most of Celita's lore involves the Western Continent, specifically Arvale.

Sylvor is a small island-continent that is divided up into city states which were, until the God Wars, in a near-permanent state of turbulence at best, war at worst. The chief amongst these are Orisia, ruled by a military council of Generals and with the High Commander as head of state, The Nentir Vale (yes this is taken from the published adventures...I had to start somewhere) ruled by the Eladrin, Cerund Mhalakey, who has lived far beyond his natural lifespan and fought during the God Wars, and Telverin, a northern state comprised mainly of elfin houses which often cause animosity with others due to their pride and tradition.
In the centre of Sylvor is the City of Moonstair (also called the City of Avengers), Moonstair is built on a Planar Rift between the natrual world, Feywild and Elemental Chaos, it is ruled by Eladrin nobles, human councillors and Efreet Merchant Princes, such is the volatile nature of the city that some houses that seem empty in the common realm are actually elemental or feywild dwellings in the extraplanar 'copies' of the city. However, Moonstair's most notable feature is its plethora of Avenger Academies, training these lethal divine assassins for superficial control over the rifts. Each night rooftop wars are common, with silent combat seeing the slates steeped in blood every morn. The ruling council of Moonstair keeps, or kept, the peace amongst the peoples of Sylvor until the rumours of the Grail became widespread, and now even they clamour to find it.

Also, on Gods, I'm using the 4e pantheon with the following exceptions.
Lolth, Tiamat, Bhamut, Ioun, Vecna, Melora and Bane are no more.
New deities, S'hiras Ahran (replacing Ioun and Vecna and patron god of Blood Magic), Balen (good god of crusading), Actalieus Val Shaea (God of Power/Energy, again somewhat replacing Ioun/Vecna).

As a consequence Drow are now a more common sight upon the surface, with no God they are turning back to the old ways (some of them, at least).

You are hustled forwards, the two Vanguard before you and squad in front of you leaving little room to maneouver save forwards to the doorway. Walking through and into a passage, your spend another few minutes of icy silence travelling along the hall before, as if from a tunnel, you burst out into a perfectly circular room with seven doors leading from it, three guards at each, in the room's centre a man sits facing you, on an iron throne of the type that Crystal remembers all to well from her interrogations.
Arrayed around the throne are six other figures, a towering Vekth, assumedly Horuk of C'narl, a tall, hawk-nosed man in rust-red armour, Dragon of Karth, a tall elf clad in plate, Ilourien of Sena, a man in his early fifties clad in fine robes of state yet not the ostentatious garb of his fellows, Bedrion of Orsal, a tall young man in fine golden armour who does, as the legends have it seem to glow with some inner light, Kollun of Imeyon and finally, hunched over yet still reaching well over six feet, and scowling from steel grey eyes set over a head of pepper grey hair and clad in armour of black iron and a crown with too much resemblance to a collection of bones to be tasteful, Skantea of Valsavathar.

"Good afternoon." Chambers smiles, his dry voice carrying clearly to you as the Vanguard fan out, allowing you and Raichen into the room. Examining the Sevaraii for the first time you find him a middle aged man, his pale skin faintly sallow, matching his bone white hair. He wears a black robe that falls loosley around a thin, athletic, frame and has no obvious bulges that would indicate weapons. His hands are protected by fine leather gauntlet-gloves, sliding blades clearly having been removed from their wrist-joints. Boots of the same design grace his feet...although they don't appear to have ankle-mounted blades.

"Your witnesses." Horuk rumbles, his stony eyes regarding you without a trace of emotion. "Let us hope they prove more constant that you, Sevaraii heretic."
"Skantea, have your men leave us." Ilourien adds, casting a wary glance at the Vanguard, who retreat hastily at a nod from their king, closing the door firmly behind them.
"You had a testimony to make, Master Chambers?" Bedrion leans forwards, holding the assassin's gaze.

"Why yes." Chambers folds his hands accross his chest, the slight gesture prompting a ripple of motion from the guards stationed at each doorway. "I have been sent by the Temple of Varr'Ezach to treat with you. The Temple realises that a war with both Coast and the Celian Empire would be costly for both us and you and that you cannot face an attack from both fronts. The League Entire offers you a pact of peace which will denote you as allies of the League and, hence, prompt retaliation from us when the Celians come to invade. Reciprocally, Coast will be used as a staging ground for the League Entire invasion of the Celian holdings to the north, a small price to pay, we believe, for your freedom."

Silence permeates the room for moments after the Sevaraii's speech before, clearly shocked, Bedrion turns to you.
"Can any of you five vouch for any truth in Master Chambers' words?"
"I know, it seems too good to be true." Mutters Dragon from the right, "Then again, there's no telling if it is true, is there, 'assassin'. How many men order a 'splinter faction' to assassinate the men they will be treating with later that day?"
"And to think that Sevaraii were able to enter the city in the first place, let's face it, Dragon, it isn't as if you have particularly laudable security." Skantea hisses from the left, his voice like the north wind except with none of its warmth.
"Enough!" Kollun raises a hand, causing silence to fall once again. "We have a means of finding the truth here, before our very eyes. Now, if what our mages have confirmed is true then Mages Hardwood and Elmheart will be able to, with their link to Chambers' mind, be able to give us an, at least vague, outline of his intentions. Does the Sevaraii truly want to help us, will he and his masters betray us if the war turns ill?"

I'm fine with 3.5 chars, I'll basically take the essentials and make your TSC character with that. I feel that it would be better to let you make the characters in editions you're familiar with rather than creating an entire new system.

Anyway, Takley's already sent me his char (although I would like some backstory from you if that's okay) so once you've all sent me you're details I'll put up the Q&A and begin.

Start your characters at level 5 (around a sixth of the way up the levels of whatever relevant game system you use). Be careful choosing deities as the 4e pantheon we are using has changed quite a bit, check the Aftermath TSC thread for more info.

Razor whirls, his spade coming up like an axe, poised to strike, before, after a second, the foreigner lowers his impromptu weapon, eyes glinting darkly out from under his hood.
"You wish to travel the wastes..." The sentence hung somewhere between a question and statement.
------------------------------------------------
"Damn, they've found you...not to worry though, this way there will be less mouths to feed."

"No, you cannot slay a man for trying to help-"

"He'd do the same to you, just do him in Raze' if he chances a look behind you you're finished."

"Not necessarily, perhaps this shall be a measure of how desperate this city is. Leave him be."
------------------------------------------------
"Do not yet abandon hope, lest it abandon you." Razor's voice is quiet as he steps forwards, his mouth a dispassionate line. "Give me this one day then I shall join you, there are necessary parting gestures that...need to be made."

The tall, cloaked figure blocks out the view of the street, fortunate since behind Razor is the half-excavated grave of a recently deceased child.

I'm fine with any players joining, in fact it's great to have such a surge of enthusiasm so early on.

I'll see whoever else is interested before putting up some more lore, but basically, your characters will be from Sylvour. There aren't any race or class restrictions so go to town with your characters.

Hi all.

As those of you who have checked up on it know, Celtia and I are co-DMs for the Scarred Continents campaign setting. Seeing as he's running the Aftermath game I thought it only proper that you see my side of the story, exploring the continents of Pandemonium and Sylvor.

This will probably be floating somewhere in the murky depths between a Freeform and Rules Based RPG, as of such to make things easier for players I simply ask that you send me whatever character sheets you want from whatever edition you're most comfortable with (or simply just give me some char details) and I'll convert it into my TSC system.

Anyway, here's some lore to be going on with.

"Many where the heroes of the God Wars, some mighty and benevolent like the now-God Balen, others as cold and sharp as a shard of ice, such as Nernian Ectisor, the Drow Archer who, it was rumoured, took out one of the Demon-Goddess, Lolth's, eyes with her last breath and final arrow.
Others were driven by honour or love, such as the Eladrin Knight, Althea Alleshandros, or by a bitter flame of vengance, like S'hiras Ahran. Thanks to them, the world is safe from the otherworldy predations of demons, elementals and fallen Gods, however, nowhere, whether an isolated farmstead, or world-spanning empire, can be safe from itself.
Now, after almost two hundred years since we were shocked into peace, the peoples of Sylvor once more seek to take up arms against one another, not in a petty conflict accross the borders of their city-states, but in a quest to seek a relic long since thought lost before the God Wars. The Legendary Grail of Blades, an artefact so powerful its weilder can turn legions and shatter armies by himself.
There is but one question, will you answer the Grail's call?

The corridor winds on for some time, occasionally breaking off to side passages and cul de sacs, however whenever a turning point presents itself the hand always beckons you on until, after what seems like moments for Takra in her elation and suffocating hours for Lantaris in his dour mood, the hallway opens up into an antechamber of sorts, brightly lit and hosting a tightly clustered squad of Valsavatharian Vanguard and a very nervous Green Circle Acolyte.
"P..please Captain, I am sure that she will come, a Circle Mage has never failed to answer King Skantea's call."
"Only to break his laws." The 'Captain', a six-foot brute of a man, clad in blackened plate grunts, toying with a stiletto that gleams menace in the light. "Why not just send her another Mind-Call, I'm sure that's not beyond you."
"S..sir, she won't..can't answer, even Master Raichen has tried..he said that her Mental Signature has changed-" At that moment, the door opens and the High Mage in question brushes into the room, his gaze locking with the entrance to the chamber.
"Ah, Hardwood, where have you been? I've spent the last half-hour trying to contact you, a patrol came accross the evidence of a skirmish and we feared the worst, even when Lieutenant Malthorne reported you past his checkpoint we still couldn't make contact."
"Whatever the case, I require your report at once, we have captured a Sevaraii 'Ghraz Wendyr'...that translates roughly to Master or Commander in civilised languages, our patrol apparently located a splinter faction of his cell that supposedly attacked you in an attempt to enter the palace and carry out an assassination attempt against our Kings. He says you can 'vouch' for his good intent, along with whatever companions you have..."Chosen to bring" I think were his words. Anyhow, I suggest you come with me at once, or else all hell will break loose...if it hasn't already." The last words are muttered under Raichen's breath as behind you two figures slip out of the shadows, one vaguley recognisable as Lieutenant Malthorne.
"Best foot forwards, Hardwood, as I said, try not to piss Skantea off too much, he doesn't like to be kept waiting."

"Move on through, then, Journeymage...you wouldn't want anyone getting suspicious with you loitering around outside." The Myanmade growls, motioning for his squad to part and let you through, closing ranks neatly behind you.

The interior of the palace of Karth is impressive, the hewn stone grandeur a testament to the southern kingdom's strength. Everywhere you look there seem to be pairs of guards, patrolling, the corridors or guarding various doors or halls.

Leading from the main foyer there are six main corridors, each bearing the livery of one of the Kingdoms of Coast. You frown as you regard the Valsavatharian passage, it almost seems as if the shadows playing against its inner wall are forming a hand beckoning to you...

Vrael looks at the drink and then at Owen, a wry smile playing accross his grizzled features.
"Ah, you seem to be familiar with Hobgoblin brotherhood rites, your way of apologising no doubt." Vrael too spits into the drink before taking a swig of around half of its contents before handing it up to the barkeep. "Come on, the rite requires both of us to drink each other's spittle to show that we share each other's hearths, food and ale." The smile widens into a broad grin, showing Varel's fangs.

Vrael takes a coin from the pouch, twirling it between his fingers. You could never trust an inn where the patrons were more friendly than the barkeep...and you could never trust friendly patrons. He had tried to explain as such to the Dragonborn he had met on the road to Almerin, although the young warrior seemed to have trust bursting from every scale covering his body, which was bound to be a liability in a city as big as this.
Normally, at this point, Vrael would have left the young hero-aspirant to his fate in the city. Fading into the whirl of the streets to be forgotten, perhaps making his way in the guard if he was lucky, however with the recent trouble, the troubadour needed someone he could trust, and his current companion served that purpose admirably.

"I'm Vrael, sometimes called the Horned Harlequin by those that are either blind and deaf or haven't seen or heard me perform or sing. So, we'd be glad for any work you've got for us and any other services rendered. However it's a thirsty journey to the city and before any meetings take place I'd like to have myself a drink."

Taking a glance around the room Vrael grimaced again, it was the same every city he went to, the desperation that fuelled the people there. The halfling might look trustworthy, but if he did lead them to a gang of theives afterwards then by the time the watch turned up there'd be one gang less to arrest.

"You see, Lantaris, we're here to save lives, not to end them." Al'Ral adds, spreading his hands helplessly. "Besides, if you've been trained to take foes down without fatalities then wouldn't it be best for you to come with us and potentially avoid any unnecessary bloodshed?"

At this point you are interrupted by a cough from the sergeant manning the gate, his amber Myanmade eyes glaring at you from his ashen grey face.
"Is there some kind of problem, or has the Royal Gatehouse suddenly become a shelter for vargants? Either get moving or get gone!"

No one spares a madman a second glance, especially in an entire city full of them. Thus, Razor was able to navigate the empty streets quickly, pick and shovel in hand. After a few minutes he found what he was looking for, the quiet allyway that would have been a shady paradise in more temperate times...
With a hiss, Razor's form became indistinct as a concealing veil of shadows slipped accross him. One last check to make sure the street was deserted, before the pick struck down, breaking the freshly opened earth.

"Brutality?" Al'Ral turns to you, a quizzical look in his eyes. "Lantaris, we're at the forefront of brokering a peace that could crush the Celian Empire's puntive attempts south for good, and believe me, I've seen more of these situations than you've years, and I can tell you this. If Chambers finds you wanting when we enter that castle, unless someone knocks him off for you he will hunt you down in cold blood. I know it's not your desicion, but neither was it mine or Regarial's, if you have no faith in your companions how can you hope to stand together against both the Empire and the League?"
"Besides," Rege' adds, "I'm not sure your Kings' burly guards over there would take kindly to you walking back to the checkpoints or loitering around here, you're putting us all at risk by staying put. Under duress, you might be the only chance Crystal and Takra have, so pearhaps you can leave your morales behind like the rest of us have and do what's necessary."
"Surley you owe your friends that much." Al'Ral finishes, the duo holding Lantaris' gaze cooly.

The Guards at the next checkpoints nodd you through, until you finally make your way to the gates of the palace. Thankfully for Crystal, no more Valsavatharians (vanguard or not) appear to be manning the barricades...however whatever solace the mage can draw from that is cut off when she sees the contingent arrayed before the gates.
At least twenty fully armed and armoured Vekth and Myanmade stand arrayed around the open portcullis whilst on the walls above them at least a dozen crossbowmen of various ethnicities stand, accompanied by at least three mages.

"Well, looks like the Royalty actually do take their security seriously." Mutters Rege' from behind you, his eyes scanning the walls. "It might be a good idea to flash Chambers' letter to whoever's in charge of this rabble, there reaction would be worth it if nothing else."

"I'm looking for the Library, you got any clue where it is?"

As an afterthought he also flashed his filed teeth...it had worked well enough back on Sylvour and Pandemonium.
