Topic: Building a PC
Subject: Building a PC

I'm building my first PC. Reddit's r/PCMasterRace and r/BuildAPC have been really helpful in getting started, partly for the suggestions and stuff like that, but a loooooot of research has been going into this. My SO has built a few and everytime I say I think I've settled on a part, he'll ask me something random (to a n00b like me) like, "didja check its benchmarks?" and then not explain what that is or means so back to the drawing board I go.

I can truly say though that I am really enjoying this process. It's like a puzzle, and I've always enjoyed figuring out how to put things together. I'm building a mid-range one because $$$, but it will be built for gaming. Because of the $$$ I can only purchase one or two parts a month so based on my timeline I'll really be able to start building around August, possibly September, but hopefully August.

I got my PSU this month, and by mid April I should have my video card. I'm pretty sure I've settled on which one I want, but that could all change in the next few weeks before I purchase.

Has anyone else around here built a gaming PC?
What is your best piece of advice when it comes to building one?

PC Part Picker and Tom's Hardware have been pretty helpful resources along with those subreddits I mentioned above, any others you like?

I'd also loooove to hear any horror stories you've had in building a PC. Words of warning are appreciated

Thanks for the help or just the read-through!

I've seen you post that in our other games, but for some reason this time I thought you were referring to yourself as "baby" and it changed everything

That being said, YEEESSSSSS! We left on such a cliff hanger! Medbay is READY.

Cho'Ra sipped her stew and kept her eye on the distraught woman as she continued to reply under the deluge of the bowman's questioning. She sighed to herself as with new revelation in the Mistress' story, another barrage of questions were flung wildly at the woman who had hardly had a chance to touch her stew or even grab a breath to herself since they sat down.

"Blood and ashes!" The woodsman shocked Cho'Ra away from her thoughts as he leaned in toward the bowman, "I've not been able to eat in peace as my ears are filled with this simpering. Maybe if I were to draw it out in the mud, the case might be clearer."

He proceeded in his way to explain to the room and the grieving woman that it had been the weak, love-struck will of the young lady who was at fault for the murder of the Aes Sedai. Though for his defense, he did mention it was at the manipulation of the whitecloak.

"The only one who seems to be not guilty of anything is this poor woman," the hairy woodsman continued, "The lot of you would do well to follow my lead: eat your meal, get some rest, and then leave the boneheaded behaviors of city folk to the city folk. Now, mayhaps I can eat in peace? Hmmm?"

The silence, despite its awkwardness, came almost as a relief to the incessant questioning of the one man, and bolstered lecturing of the other.

It was a brief relief however, as the scrapping of chair legs on the wood floor drew everyones attention to Mistress Velalin. She rose and Cho'Ra could nearly see the flames bursting from her eyes at the woodsman. She scooped up her sadly untouched bowl of stew and threw it at the woodsman's hulking form, spattering him with its entire, likely cold contents.

"How dare you!" She shrieked, and the rest of the room fell silent, "Millae had nothing to do with Nelelle Sedai's death! NOTHING!" And she spun around and fled the Gleeman's Abode.

Cho'Ra looked down at what remained of her own stew, as far too many eyes settled on their eclectic table, and she could nearly feel the silence.

"Music, man! We need music. And drinks! Come, a free drink for everyone!"

She looked up in time to see Master Masteon glaring their way and wondered how much longer they would be allowed in this place. At this rate, having all just arrived in town and already confronted their guards and upset their beloved Mistress Velalin, they wouldn't last until nightfall.

She waited until the crowd and music perked up so they would not be overheard and finally addressed their group, "It seems we're all quite well-versed in making lasting first impressions. Before they throw us out of town however, it would be wonderful if we could assist the kind lady who so graciously bathed our woodsman here," she gave a quick smile to the large, unpredictable man who seemed to be ignoring her.

"Bowman, your questioning must have begotten some useful information, shall we proceed to the jailhouse now and perhaps speak with Millae or find what the guards know? Strategy is not entirely my strength, but I would like to work on some sort of plan on how to go about this. Oh, I'm Cho'Ra, by the way."

How was our loot from the PLC divided? Should we wait for team leader?

AND, is the Jack-o-Bot still with us in R&D or did it run off?

Steam adjusted quickly to the flashing red signs once they transitioned from that green nonsense. The alarm might have bothered him more if he hadn't spent his entire day wrangling around the worst agents Friend Computer could find for him. He finally got it though, he finally knew why he had been paired up with such deplorable, likely Commie, clones. He was the only one who could tolerate this crew and ensure the mission succeeded. If a few ridiculous, novice clones wound up smeared on the side of the road, well, he couldn't blame himself for their incompetence.

The alarms suddenly stops and all he can hear is the reassuring sound of boots moving urgently along their mission. It would have been relaxing had he not been skeptical about the other clones doing something to get them all shot again. Steam slowed his pace so that he could follow in the back of the marching order. This was as much to keep an eye on them as it was to make sure neither Slipp nor Blowz crept up on him again.

He couldn't wait to figure out what treasonous scum they truly were.

Steam follow the team as they entered the lab. Two clones stood behind a counter, looking as cheery as Steam felt imagining himself as the arbiter of any and all commie demise.

"Welcome to R&D!" the indigo blurts brightly out at them, "I am Misterwa-I-ZRD, and this is my assistant, Jimm-Y-EEE. What can we do for you troubleshooters, today? You have a mission number, I presume?"

Once more Steam sits back in his place, awaiting Team Leader to team.

Woot! I have some dusting off of my imagination to do, but I'm excited to jump back in!

Edit to add: you post mentions the divvying up of equipment, should we wait for Team Leader to do that, or how should we handle that? I'm impatient as ever, so if we just need to wait a few days for the gang to get back together, that's fine!

I was on a rpg-game-finder site, looking for an ttrpg to join in the Seattle area. Olan found me and asked if I wanted to join his Paranoia PBP game.

I was hooked pretty quickly after that.

Ooooh yeah, my dude hasn't gone THAT far yet, but his HOTAS setup in our game room gets a bit intimidating. He uses that more for games like Elite Dangerous (which I fail so hard at) and Ace Combat 7 (just released and looks cray cray), but it's all pretty awesome.

For me, I've been inspired to finally go out and begin buying parts here and there to build a computer *sweats*. I never have and I'm quite poor haha but I think if I spend a few chunks here and there I can get something that "works" up and running eventually! I was given some resources and am exciting to delve in.

I'm going off the rails, I'm just a bit excited about all of these new things. STOMPY ROBOTS AND COMPOOTERRRSZZ

Heya Eol,

Just seeing your pointy ears around this place is great!

Man, sounds like you've been buried under some huge boulders. I'm really glad you're still pretty much intact, and dragon-soul's sentiments exactly: hope your daughter and the rest of your family are doing well and getting better and better and things start falling back into place.

See you soon, Space Cowboy!

Eol - I've been playing the newer PC version of Battletech, which I guess has been worked on by many of the MechWarrior people, or is the MechWarrior people . . . ? Not sure, as I tend to get lost when my SO starts talking about the clustermuck history of development with both franchises. That aside, definitely check out Battletech if you can! My SO has been a lifelong Stompy Robots guy, and still plays MWO with friends when they can find a game, and hiiiiiighly recommends it!

Tann-Thank you! I have a lot of research to do since I'm new to this world. My SO sent me the Sarna.net link to the Battletech wiki which has helped me a little as a beginner trying to figure out which guns and mechs and skill work best together, but I have a long way to go.

ALSO, I came home the other day and my SO (sorry I keep referencing him, but he's got all the cool stuff!) had this big Steel Battalion setup, with this like, huge control/throttle panel thing with pedals taking up the front room. Man, I really missed out in my childhood.

I just recently got into Battletech--actually, I started playing Battletech today and am having a reeeeal difficult time trying to stop. My SO has been playing stompy robot games since he was a kid, and I always thought they looked fun, but I just didn't truly, deeply understand.

But now, everything has changed.

Anyone else into that stompy robot/mech life? Anyone else into Battletech? They just released an updated version of their tabletop game, and I'm pretty excited to dig into that now as well.

Hi there!

All of my games seem to be a bit dead in the water. It sort of looks like all of the groups around here are full up, but if anyone is searching for a player, please let me know!

I need some PBP back in my life.
