For combat times, do we continue to make posts in the main thread about what we're thinking and doing, or do we say what our reactions/intentions are here in the Q&A and then Olan rolls for us and narrates the outcomes?

If Kith can get away from the carnage outside, she'll be there to back you up. Maybe one for each of us?

For Kithran's part, she had her shortbow ready to fire if anyone attacked. So when kitty man charges she'll fire off a couple arrows at the closest zombie and then draw her daggers and follow Ch'dau into BATTLE.

Topic: The Corruption Hidden Beneath the Surface...
Subject: Getting the Point

"I see five of the undead," Gib states in a low tone just loud enough for his fellows to hear. "If there are only the five, we have the advantage. Speed could be our advantage. We might be able to get two of us through the door of the cabin while the rest tend to the corpses."

Kithran draws her shortbow and nocks an arrow, a weapon far less personal than she prefers, but time is of the essence. She glances sideways at her large cat friend, and can sense there is not much time left before he pounces on those seemingly terrorizing this man's family. And she wouldn't let him do that alone, "I like this idea."

Drawing his sword, Gib unshoulders his shield and settles it on his arm, "The risk we take is in not knowing what's waiting for us inside the cabin." the cleric's eyes hold firmly ahead of them, "There's nothing scrambling down there. We could take the time for a scout to investigate."

Glancing at Kith, the Priest of Therassor raises his eyebrows before turning his attention to the man. "Do you have a cellar? Anywhere inside the cabin where your family might have hidden?"

"Time???" the woodsman wails, and Kith is sure the monsters must hear him, "there is no time!  They 'ave broken tha door, they are in tha 'ouse!  Me wife an' children are in there! If all ye plan ta do is scout about, then give me a blade, an' let me die wit 'em!" He seems to take a small moment to collect himself, then turns back on Gib, "There is no cellar!  Mayhap they barred tha doors inside, but if tha dead could break tha fron' door, there be no way the doors inside could 'old fer long!"

Kith makes eye contact with Gib once more, then with Ch'dau, and back to the shamblers. Then raises her bow, taking aim as she whispers, "If they are hiding for their lives, we should make haste. I will be with the monster-slaughtering party to draw them away from the cabin, if we decide to split up instead of charging in together," one of the creatures walks into her sights, and she keeps him there until either her party decides to attack, or the creatures come racing their way, "We should hurry though. I can scout if you like, as I don't mind this man throwing himself to his own death if that is what he so chooses, but I doubt the rest of you feel likewise."

Topic: Paranoia: the Only Good Commie is a Dead Commie
Subject: BING!

"BING!" the hoverbot cheerfully intones. "Next stop, the PLC!"

Shit shit shit shit shit, Steam growls silently to himself as the Friendliness Hoverbot careens forward, those pilots had made it look so easy. He continued attempting to emulate the motions and the coolness with which he had watched others conduct similar machines while also maintaining control of the off-balaced navigating system, but the two were hardly condusive. At one point he is nearly laying his entire weight onto the mechanism to turn right, then he must go left and proceeds to lay into that one as well. And then the shit, or rather Artie, hits the fan.

The left mechanism, as Steam finds out, requires nary a poke in order for it to turn. Thus, when he throws his weight into it, their hoverbot is thrust wildly into oncoming traffic and crashes into a streetsweeping bot. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Slipp flying wildly out of the vehicle, landing hard, but still in decent shape. Artie, however, makes it only as far as the hoverbots blades, and Steam is drenched in his blood by the time they come to a stop.

"BING!" the hoverbot announces in its warm, feminine tone. "Standard event number six detected: one of the crew has unfortunately fallen to their deaths. Please stand by while a replacement clone is summoned."

Ah, yes, standard event number six, Steam thought, standard event number eleven was his personal favorite, but standard event six could be pretty brutal.

The crew was quiet a moment as the dust and Artie particles settled, until finally he heard Blowz speak up from behind him, "Friendliness bot.  Do you have any further instructions to aid our captain in controlling yourself? Is there something he should know about how to turn?" Huh, no weird accent from creep-bot? Highly suspicious.

The thought of uncovering a commie bastard relaxed him a little as he stared down at his hands, still grasping desperately at the controls. He slowly unfurled his aching fingers and turned to the rest of his blood-soaked team, all looking as grateful not to have shared Artie's fate as he felt.

"Pilot, Loyalty Officer, not captain," at this point the distinction may not have seemed worthwhile to any of these civies, but any modicum of structure and organization was a goddamn blessing to the ragged soldier, "Anyone besides bloodstain over there hurt?" He looked out at the limping Slipp, "You gonna make it, Hygiene Officer?"

Post is up!

Before Cedric heals the wounds Kith was examining the guy from where she stood. Could she tell if the gashes were consistent with the ones she had seen on the victims in Crandel? I'm most familiar with 5e, so I'd like to do the equivalent of an insight check--I think in 3.5/Pathfinder it was Sense Motive on the guy.

Kith doesn't trust this guy, and how dare he try to pull one over on her big kitty man friend?!

Topic: The Corruption Hidden Beneath the Surface...
Subject:

The meeting with the priestess had proved fruitless, but then so had her attempt at research. It served her right. Book research had never really been her thing. Resigned in their conclusion that continued pursuit of information on the horrifying goings-on would likewise turn up nothing more than further wasted time, their party decides to spend one more night in Crandel before leaving in the morning. Kithran, usually a light sleeper, ready to act at any moment, passes out the moment her eyes close, her fingers still tightly wrapped around the handles of her daggers under her pillow.

She's almost surprised as she wakes up, having expected to be woken up by either more screams or with a set of mangled teeth baring down into her neck. It was a nice surprise though that neither had occured and she woke up feeling pleasantly well-rested.

That pleasant feeling lasted all of breakfast, and then their group ventured out into the mist. It was even thicker now, even more obscuring, and the eerieness of the silence had Kith's hair's standing on end. As the day wore on it prove far less eventful as she had expected, but the lack of any sort of life was hardly reassuring. Even if creatures had fled, leaves made sound, brush rustled, branches creaked, but not here. Every now and again a breeze floats by and moves some twigs around and she's convinced for a moment that they aren't in purgatory. The feeling doesn't last, and the party moves forward.

And then, as the mist begins to turn into shadows around them, she hears it. Strange now in the abundance of this suspicious silence, that the moment she finally does hear a familiar sound her hands are immediately on the hilts of her daggers, almost perfectly in sync with the Kazari beside her. Of course, the sound of a shambling man approaching them from the mist was far from reassuring, considering their last couple days.

The man is wrecked. Gashes along his bellyl leak blood, and he appears to be living by shear will alone.

"Gods be praised!" he exclaims when he draws near, "Ye are livin' folk! Please, 'elp me! Me wife and boys, they're in tha cabin, but tha dead 'ave crawled from the ground, an' are tryin' to drag us down wit' 'em! The 'ad me, nearly killed me, but I go' away, went fer 'elp, I did . . . gods be praised, ye lot are 'ere!  Please, there are too many fer me, I canna save them meself!  Please, I beg 'o ye, I'll do anythin'. . . please save me family!"

Skepticism flooded the half Sylvari as she watched her large felinoid ally go to his aid, Cedric close behind. Kithran's hands don't leave her daggers. How had this man survived? If those undead creatures were upon his family, they were surely dead by now. Ch'dau must understand that.

“This cabin, human,” the Kazari rumbled, “Where is it?”

((OOC: Assuming an answer of some sort… ))

At the man’s words, Ch'dau looked to Aranwen and the expression on his feline face was not one seeking orders or even asking permission. Instead, without the words needing to be spoken, the big cat’s look said; “I’m going. Who else?”

"When did this start?" Cedric asks the man as Ch'dau looks about their group, "How many creatures did you see? Have you noticed anything strange over the past few days?"

((OOC: Assuming an answer of some sort... ))

With nary a breath, Cedric too looks upon the group, "Come on guys! This man needs our help."

"There does appear to be a need for alacrity," Gib reluctantly agrees, closing his bag as Cedric begins the prayers to his god for a miracle. Looking directly at Ch'dau he continues with his advice, "Rushing into such a situation without any surveillance would be folly. Should the God of Light and Life find it prudent to provide this poor soul some healing, I'll take that as a definite sign that the Divine are in favor of the goal."

Kith raises her eyebrows at Ch'dau and nods her head toward Gib in agreement. Looking to Aranwen, he continues, "If we are to break from the road, I suggest we do so in formation and with all due caution."

She folds her arms in front of her and looks back to Ch'dau, "I am with you, my friend, but let us consider Gib's words before pursuing our raid. They've caught us by surprise every time we've faced them thus far. Let's turn that around this time. What say you?"

Subject: Tying up the Captain's Introduction

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 4, 1232

Melody was finallly feeling at ease, the Peregrine finally on its course. As the contentment washed over her, she sat forward in her chair, reaching for her PADD as a notification from the Captain appeared.

Ah, a meeting with all of the department heads, and a chance to meet this Captain Drake. Melody had heard much about the Captain in the last few days, both from the crew, and from those she had spoken with on SB-118. The impression she had received thus far was very good, which was reassuring.

The doctor stood up and stretched her cramped arms and legs. She had spent the majority of her free time the night before sparring in a fencing sim in the holodeck, knowing full well that her future self would likely regret it. This is what I get, I guess, she thought as she made her way to the door. Before she got there it chimed, and she called for them to come in, assuming it was one of her staff members.

Silas stepped through the open hatch to find himself face to face with a dark skinned woman in Medical blues with her dark hair up in a ponytail. He offered a smile and a hand to shake. "Captain Silas Drake. You would be Doctor Reine, I presume?"

"You presume correctly, Captain Drake," She returned his smile and shook his hand, "This is a pleasant surprise. I've been looking forward to meeting you."

Drake nodded, "I apologize for the delay in formally welcoming you, but I'm afriad that I was... unavoidably detained on Starbase 118 for the past few days."  Sure, that joke is old already, but she hasn't heard it yet, Silas mused internally.

"Oh no, was it something serious?" Melody tried to hold her aghast expression as long as she could before it broke back into her smile, "I may have heard something about that."

With a wry grin, Silas carried on. "I noticed that you are quite well-traveled; it seems that you rarely stay with one ship for very long. Hopefully, you and the Peregrine will be ideal fits for one another, and we will be able to keep you here for a longer stint than you seem to be accustomed to. After all of the recent upheaval, there is little that would make me happier than knowing for certain who each of department heads will be!"

Melody had spent the last five years training herself not to show any of the anxiety that ran through her at the mention of her tendency to seek out new assignments. Even so, she could never quite keep her hands and back from stiffening slightly whenever it came up, "I hope so as well, Captain. From what I've seen of this ship and her staff, the Peregrine seems to be a great vessel in excellent hands. What more could I ask for?"

Drake stood up straight, "Well, Doctor, I don't want to get in your way; I'm certain that you have a lot to do. I did, however, want to personally welcome you aboard, and to offer mysef at your disposal if you are in need of anything. I will see you at the staff meeting at 1600; have yourself a great afternoon."

"You as well, Captain." With that, the Captain left the office.

She leaned back against her desk for a moment. The topic was always brought up, and she had come to expect it to come up, but it was never easy.

She sighed, straightened, left her office and marched determinedly into sickbay, ready to immerse herself in as much work as possible before the meeting later that afternoon.
