Until we have posted a bit, there will be some mistakes in making assumptions about other characters. We will correct as we go along.

I should post a list of characters with description, traits and complications so you all know one another. So if there is anything on your sheet you don't want shared yet, let me know.

Yes, I am sure that if the series had lasted more than one season, we would have seen Jayne and River developing a relationship and Simon having a great deal of problems over it. Tensions galore.

Yes, Vanadia does like to get into her roles, which is why she is such a good gamer. I am sure a lot of us will be in our bunks after her narratives about her companion/doctor.

Excellent intros all around. Blamm, if you want to put Trish in your openng post, handing you a length grocery shopping list, feel free. Otherwise I will post for the NPC after New Years.

On that note, have a safe and wonderful New Year's Eve to all of you.

I put down the wrong amount on my opening post. You are starting with 500 credits , plus the 250 you have in "petty cash"

Will be busy for next two days, then going away again for the weekend. Post if you wish and I will be ready to move in the new year.

No waiting. You may post if you want. I really enjoyed your opening post actually. Gave me a feel for the character almost immediately.

The details on the ship are still coming but we can move forward without them. I re-read the rules over the holidays and realized I made a couple of small mistakes on my first post, but nothing that can't be fixed (the money you were paid/going to be paid was completely off - it is fixed now).

Remember when we are starting the game you are together for a year, having just finished a mission that didn't go well. Don't go spending a lot of money on fuel and food, because I will tell you exactly how much you have of both. You will be landing on Beaumonde with 500 credits, very little fuel (Fill'er up), port fees to pay (They raised the rates again!), and very little in the kitchen except protein paste(I'd kill for a carrot, well maybe not kill - injure though)

So arm and equip, buff up the ship, then let me know when you are ready.

Subject: Stun vs wound

On a person, Stun damage is damage that can knock you down, unconscious or seriously sleepy. It is not life threatening and it is shaken off (healed) rapidly.

Wound damage is damage to the body that create physical marks (bullets, knives, etc). This damage can leave you with a case of the deads, unless you have a medic around.

Now for a Ship, Stun Damage effects the operating systems of the vessel. Life support, sensors, communications etc can all be effected by Stun Damage. Like a person, it can be shaken off, especially with the help of a good mechanic and redundancy systems. Some ship to ship weapons aim to damage only the electrical systems so the ship can be taken intact (Our Ms. Reynolds episode).

Wound damage to a ship is physical damage (Stop blowing holes in my bloody ship!). These can only be repaired with a mechanic and a lot of duct tape.

Subject: Bad Guys and Villains

There be more bad folks in the Verse than the guy with a gun looking to steal what’s rightfully yours. Best you be wary of them, and those who you can expect to help you in need.

The Law

The Alliance military is in charge of keeping the peace in the system, but for more local problems you have your sheriffs, planet side militias, Interpol and of course, the Feds.

Sheriffs – Local Law Enforcement can be a fine upstanding citizen looking to maintain the laws of the land. It can also be a half baked fool with a leaky brainpan and an itchy trigger finger. Depends on where you are, you can not always expect the law to be there to help you. Sometimes the law is as happy to have a scapegoat as it would be to have the real culprit.

Planet Side Militia – Your local gang of thugs and heroes looking to throw their weight around. Can be very vague on what the law is or was, and many of them are unwritten because not many around can read anyway.

Interpol – The Interplanetary Police deal with criminals that have fled the jurisdiction of the local law. They deal mostly in tracking fugitives and investigating crimes across interplanetary borders, but don’t do the dirty work of the Federal Marshalls.

Feds – Federal Marshalls are the ones that actually seek out the criminals to bound them by law, or haul them back to face trial. Some are the righteous enforcers of peace and some are little more than bounty hunters. Feds have a large amount of autonomy in their job, as well they get the good ships, fancy gadgets and all them perks.

Corporations

The Blue Sun Corp. – Think of them as the P&G, Microsoft, Nike, Domtar, and McDonalds of the Verse. Blue sun makes everything and everything is made better by Blue Sun. They became big by holding a monopoly on package foods needed by the terraformers. The rest is as they say, history. It is an open secret that Blue Sun engages in espionage and holds many powerful government officials in their pockets. They now make computer equipment, spaceships, weapons, medicine, drugs, and the list goes on. It is easier to break into an Alliance military facility than it is to get into a Blue Sun Corp research and development plant.

The Corone Mining Consortium – Several powerful mining corporations merged just before the war to form the consortium. Together they could afford the lawyers, politicians and muscle needed to squeeze out most of the independent prospectors in the Verse. The underhanded tactics of the Consortium are legendary (Claim jumping, indenture servant workers, tunnel under another claim and cleaning it out).

Iskellian Technology Solutions – Own the future today is their motto, and when it comes to high tech, Iskellian has it all from computers to lasers. The Alliance buys solely from this company to supply its military. There stuff is very expensive, very dependable and not often seen in the hands of average folk.

Unified Reclamation – There is a lot of trash in the Verse, and where there is trash, you will find Unified Reclamation. UR controls the rights to legal savage in the Verse and that is where they get their money. The volume of salvage opportunities after the war is staggering and if you don’t have a license issued by UR, then you are illegal and can be bound by law (or blown up depending on whether the Alliance wants to waste the time, or the ammo).

Guilds

Trader’s Guild – Small and independent traders banded together to help stand against the corporations. Despite the fact it is very small, the Alliance and the government are keenly alarmed by this guild.

Miner’s Guild – The largest guild in the Verse. The Miner’s Guild fights for the rights of the independent prospector against the Consortium. Unfortunately, it is so large it has become mired in bureaucracy and moves very slowly. Many guild members have been caught taking bribes recently and the scandal has weaken the power of this organization.

Companion’s Guild – The oldest and most respected of the guilds, the Companion are highly paid prostitutes/geishas whose company is fiercely sought and desired by those who can afford it.

Tongs – Although truly not a guild; descending from the ancient Triads, the tongs are the controllers of organized crime within the Chinese community. The Tongs are family based and many time rival families will clash against each other over territory and rights. A few Tong families are so powerful that they have a strong influence on members of parliament. They control many of the drug trades, illegal weapon running and slavery.

Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: So it begins

Wyatt Sung looks out the forward view port of the Rocinante, a Firefly class Transport, at the world of Beaumonde.

Yep. Things could have gone a might smoother

You had landed on the desert side of Bellerophon, a good place to be if you didn’t want a watchful eye upon you. It was there your client had made arrangement for you to drop the shipment. Five large cartons of 2 inch, self sealing Sten bolts –that be 500 of the critters. Very important items, so you were told, if you were mining for liquids or gas, or working without air or underwater. Whatever the reason or the need, you picked them up from his contact on the shady side of Shadow and brought them here. Simple fetch job, avoid the authorites, nice payout. What could go wrong?

As soon as you landed, you knew something was wrong. Both Trish and Kora were feeling that feeling in the gut that you learned meant trouble. Trouble was confirmed, in the form of your client and his work crew all getting a bad case of the dead – murdered that is. So you had no client, and a hold full of cargo with no buyer. Worst yet, for a job that was supposed to pay 1,300 credits, you only got 500 up front. That covered costs but left little profit unless you found someone to buy these Gorram Sten bolts.

Beaumonte was the best bet. Industrial world could have uses for this stuff, and you knew a guy on Beaumonde who could move anything if you gave him enough of a cut. Name was Dodger, and he had friends everywhere and anywhere.

So here you be, looking to land on Beaumonde, lose this freight, get another job and keep flying. At least no one was shooting for you and the cargo wasn’t stamped with Alliance markers. Things could be worse.

Rocinante touches down without incident. Time to get the crew moving on doing what needs to be done, and just as Wyatt turns to grab the mike for the intercom, he spots something out of the corner of his eye.

Sitting on the pad next to the Rocinante is a Dragonfly class with an emblem of two dice on a crap table – The Royale written across it. The ship has certainly seen better days. The starboard thruster looks like it has exploded from the inside out. The back engines are blackened and there seems to be extensive fire damage. He ain’t going anywhere soon, and it’s a thing to wonder how he got it to land as it was.

Dash looks over Wyatt’s shoulder, “Ain’t that Griffith’s ship?”

“Yep”

“Doesn’t he owe you money?”

“Yep. He does at that.”

DM’s Note - Okay, chance to do introduction posts before we start. Things you need to do on Beaumonde – Contact Dodger, sell the Cargo, get a new job, and see Griffith about the money he owes you. The local watering hole is a place called Idoru and you'd bet on Griffith being there. Dodger has his office on the east side of town.

Payment was way too high. I fixed

Music: You’ll be Loved Again by Cowboy Junkies, clipped for opening. Hopefully I will be able to add a link to music.

Scene opened from blackness. Sun comes up in accelerated shot, revealing a Firefly Transport sitting among wrecks. Song begins

How could he take you in his arms
And help you to be free

Screen changes to split screen, Wyatt face on the left, hand-drawn, slowly changes into that of the real face. On the right, Wyatt stands defiant – drawing his gun, then Wyatt holding a bottle in his room, looking at it like it was an enemy, then Willow and Wyatt arguing and then Wyatt and Dash fighting each other on the deck of the cargo bay.

Then leave you forgotten
And is it enough to cry
When you're so taken.

Screen changes to hand-drawn Dash on left fading to the real face. On the left, Dash at controls of the firefly, looking intent, Dash with rifle in hand, jumping off a roof, and then Dash drawing a gun and shooting the bottle in Wyatt’s hand.

Her cold eyes tell you that you're not welcome
She tells lies but you'll take her back again

Face of Willow, hand-drawn fading to the real. On the left, Willow walking through a crowded bar, everyone stopping to look at her, Willow in the infirmary, crash-carting Asher, Willow with a mischievous smile on catwalk above cargobay.

And is it enough to die
When you're so broken

Kora face hand-drawn fades to real. On left, Kora takes out three men with her bare hands and feet, Kora covered in grease, working on the engine, and then Kora in a frilly dress looking ready to murder someone.

You will be loved again
You will be loved again

Trish’s face hand-drawn to real. On the Left, Trish serving dinner to the crew, Asher and Trish holding each other like mother and son, Trish blasting away with her pink shotgun, hood pulled over head.

But will she sing and will she dance
And will she forever

Asher’s face hand-drawn to real. On the left, Asher fires shotgun, discards it and draws both pistols and fires, Asher talking to Willow as she slides pass him, ignoring him, Asher driving mule in a wide turn with three mules chasing.

But will he sing and will he dance
And will he forever

The Firefly soars across the screen in a slow roll. Scene changes to firefly going to hard burn, light glowing around backend of ship.

Someday you will feel a love so deep
And you will find someone not lost in sleep

A long shot of the inside of the ship, camera slowly rolling backwards. A superimposed ghostly image of a horse running down the length of the ship away from camera. Scene fades to back, then the emblem of the Rocinante forms out of the black.

And you will be loved again
You will be loved again

Final shot of crew gathered at the dinner table, laughing, sharing food and enjoying themselves. Camera pans around to capture each member.

You will be loved again

Screen fades to black.

I will be giving everyone three friends or family or aquaintances in the Verse. This is to give you someone to turn to for info or help in the future. Now I do take requests so feel free to ask. I will assign them a place in the Verse so you will have to be near them to get help, but you can always send a wave.

Example:
Wyatt knows another ship's Captain by the name of Griffith. He's a man with a good name and he'll back you up even if there's no profit except friendship. He currently owes you money (TBD), but you know he'll be good for it the next time your paths cross. Things have a way of going smoothly for Griffith, and he carries torch for the fine Miss Willow.
Location: Dragonfly Class transport - The Royale. Usually in Outer planets territory

Topic: Voyages of the Rocinante - Firefly RPG QnA
Subject: The ship's name

I have a graphic of teh ship's emblem I need to post. But I wanted to say a bit about the name of your ship.

It has been established that Wyatt won Rocinante in a card game. The following is a narrative of the former owner, explaining the name of the ship.

Why Rocinante?

Let me tell you about this man back on Earth that was. Went by the name of Don Quixote and he wasn’t a lord or mayor or a man of standing; he was just folk like you and me. Lived in a place called Las Mancha, which I think was in Texas back on Earth. Anyways, the man had a love of reading though, and took to books like a fish to water. So much so that them folks in his town started to think he had a leaky brainpan due to all that reading. You know how them backwater folks can get them strange notions in their heads.

Anyways, this Quixote fella, he took disagreement with the local uppity-ups. Real giants of industry that held the area in a tight grip on the account that they owned all the wind-mill power generators. Since they had the power and the money, they basically took control of the area and made their ways known to the folks. Not completely different from some places in the Verse now, come to think of it. But Don wouldn’t stand for it. He took up arms against that sea of troubles, even though he was just one man.

Now Don had a horse - wasn’t a pretty horse or a fast horse or even a young spirited one. It was an old nag workhorse, much like any of us have rode or used on the farms. But Don didn’t see the horse as old and useless; he saw the horse as a faithful steed upon which to ride out and undo the wrongs of the world. So he called her Rocinante, which was Spaniard for “not a work horse”.

Now I’d like to tell you that Mr. Quixote went out and did great things and became a big damn hero. But, sure as shooting, one man against giants doesn’t have much of a chance. However, no matter how often he went out and got beaten, bruised and generally messed up – Rocinante always got him home again. The folks tried to get Don to stop, being scared of them lords and their power, but he kept right on trying, and Rocinante keep bringing him back for mending.

Soon enough though, an old man can’t take the beatings anymore and he died a broken man. But once he was gone, the folks suddenly realized they had lost something. They felt it in their hearts and it made them mourn something awful. Then they rose up against those giants of industry and cast off their shackles. Wasn’t for Quixote though, they wouldn’t have say boo. Isn’t that the way though? Folks don’t know what they got until its plum gone.

So I named her Rocinante, cause she was once a work horse, but she ain’t to me. She’s much more than that, and if I love her and take care of her; she’ll always bring me home. No matter if I succeed in my ventures or I am running bruised and bleeding – she’ll get me home again. She’ll do the same for you too.
