Subject: watching ... ... ...and waiting

{answer to back-post]
"Geim, eh? Well met, Geim! Name's Kurok, meself. A worshipper of Kharox, are ya? Only met one other like ya, and that was quite a few years ago. There's hope for Khords if'n they got men like ya to carry on the faith for us. And, yep, I'm Chak. And I'm Khord. But she who birthed me made sure that I kept the pride in my Chakrandrum heritage. Even tho' I'm not a blooded Chakrandrum, I look different enough to be able to claim it, too, even tho' sometimes it causes me a bit o grief. We got lots ta talk about, you and I. But I think that until we give up, now is not the time to do it. And I ain't givin' up yet!"

[Moving on ... ]
"Active time? Wahhhlll, Miss Elessa, ma'am, they're most active early morning' or early evenin', when they head out on their forays ta do what they done ta us, or when they come back from it. They're less active at Night's Height, when the night raids are out and before they come back. But there's always some activity 'er sompthin' goin' on most times between. The camp's never dead or sleepy, ya know?"

Kurok stands watching for a bit longer while the others settle in. The fire in his blood had physically drained him, but left his clarity of thought morning-sharp in the aftermath -- at least for a while. For that brief period, and until he decided to sit and prop himself against the bars, he amused himself by trying to catch the eye or eyes of one or more of the cage's guards to give them the benefit of a taunting stare or snaggle-toothed grin.

Flexible or not, if you're pretending to still be tied, how is it you can pat Geim on the shoulder?

Chains? Kurok can do more damage with his fist(s). But they will make a decent enough DEFENSIVE weapon, to entagle other weapons or limbs and bring wielder closer so he can "reach out and touch" them ...

If'n ya back-read a little bit, you'll notice that Kurok is the only one (now) that is obviously not bound, having just recently broken his chains in full view of the entire gathering outside the cage-wagon ...

So he can shake your hand, and will do so willingly and gladly.

Went to grab my prepared spell list and found that the known spell list was missing spells I know I had selected.

Then I noticed that I sent Reralae the character sheet made BEFORE I selected specialist and prohibited schools, after wich I purchased spells with funds (it's one reason he's so short on cash).

Anyhooo, before I can post his list:

Reralae, do you want me to send you the entire (correct) character sheet, or just the (correct) spell listings?

Ohhhhhhhh, I feel so stewpid !

Never read about cohorts before. Have now. Interesting concept.

I also understand "farming out" or "out-sourcing" NPCs also. Have done it in my own games. I just wasn't aware of who was or was not an NPC (and I'm still not -- yet -- concerning some. Patiently waiting.)

On with the introductions !!

Oh, and Kaelyn? Sharing the knowledge of available spells is a good idea, but overlaps in spells memorized can also be useful. As long as it doesn't result in complete duplication of effort(s) ...

Subject: Yeah, you called it right.

Your concerns are valid and noted. As far as the DC goes: I know how I would rate it as a DM, and "epic proportions" would be about right.

I don't understand the phrase "walk through her squear", though.

First, he knew Jevaf would be in front of him when he ran in. He knew he couldn't risk a javelin in her back on a miss, so he didn't draw one. It's also why he left his moriningstar against the wall outside the off-shoot cave. As he approached, and in the light, he knew he couldn't have used his breath weapon (his "surprise" range weapon), which is a cone of fire. That would also risk Jevaf as well as the painting. He was moving and made a split-second alteration that seemed extreme, even to him, but was also not impossible.

He could see Jevaf in the light and, therefore, easily contact her shoulders as described, whether or not she knew he was coming. He is actually prepared for her to drop at the contact, but even then he is still moving forward from his running momentum, and the lift of his jumping alone. withor without her support. should carry him at least some distance. Your ruling from there is what it is. I don't and won't question your integrity.

In the beginning, it was a given that this group has adventured together before (and/or for some time). As a dragon shaman, the power he wields and intends to wield is a part of his character makeup as an emulation of the life of his "token dragon". Being chaotic neutral besides just adds to that "wanna-be power monger" attitude. So the actions and attitude he has and displays should not surprise the others. That is not to say that it doesn't (or shouldn't) anger them, but if he was that dispensable, he would not still be here with them ... (my/his reasoning for the attempt)

Each member of the party, in his situation, would handle it differently. His action is but one possibility ...

And he was signaled to stay and aid Jevaf. In his mind, he is doing just that. Okay, so he has a flair for the "grand entrance", but he's not exactly running her down to get at him ... not exactly ...

But I guess I COULD take the time to read the screen and make sure I am in/on the right account before I post ... ... ... NAH!

Anyhoo ... Got most of what I wanted, but not all. At the same time I got more than I expected. Compliments to the DM and all involved !!

Topic: The Chakran Portal - an Adventure in Audalis
Subject: Calm after the raging storm

As Kurok strained against the chains, he could feel no give, no weakness in the links. But he had committed himself to this action and so strained all the harder. When he heard Thondrek add his cheering, goading litany to his efforts, enthusiastically egging Kurok on, a hope brightened in Kurok's mind. This Khord has the right of it! If you can't do, encourage!

But the chains still held. And Kurok let go. Standing, he let himself be carried into, and by, the unfocused rage he called forth. Uncontrollable as it was, it was still useful at times. And this time, he would show them, for sure and for certain, what a Khord -- a Chak! -- was capable of when bound and thought beaten! Through the tunnel-vision produced by his oncoming battle-frenzy he could see that even the orcs were "getting into" his attempt, but whether they were impressed or making fun of him, he wasn't sure. The crowd utside the cage became larger as more, orcs and goblins alike, came to see what the disturbance was all about. Dimly, somewhere amongst the encouragement of Thondrek and the cheering and gnashing of the orcs and goblins, Kurok could hear his own protracted scream. It started low and straining, but with his encreased strength and effort, it became almost a screech, a taunt, a call to enemies to come and be his fodder.

A link snapped. Elation! Twisting his arms and hands, Kurok loosed the chains on his wrists. Now the only sound was his raging screams as he reached down to take hold of a wrap of chains on his ankles and snap that bond, "Almost as easily as snapping a goblins neck", came the thought. Stamping his feet and twisting his ankles a bit, Kurok was now free! And the "audience cheered!"

As he took a decisive, threatening step toward the bars of the cage, though, he was stopped by the spear-points of the goblin guards. Although still in the throws of his madness, he was not suicidal. Not yet. He stopped, furiously fighting within himself to quell the madness that he had called upon. With the usual difficulty, good common sense won out, and the rage subsided, leaving Kurok standing a bit wobbly and trembling, his chin on his chest. Not in defeat, for his face still showed the taunting humor he had begun with. But mixed with that humor was a glad weariness, as if suddenly ending a frantic run for one's life and being able to stop in complete safety.

As he stood trembling, an ancient-looking goblin approached, the crowd parting before him like villagers before a dragon. He looked to be a shaman of sorts, from Kurok's view. But this, he knew, was the power-man here. A leader if not the leader. Bootskull? Still with head on chest and looking upward, out from under his bushy eyebrows, Kurok would have bet his left hand that it was.

“I need four more guards on that cage, and this ruckus is ending now.”

The shaman paused briefly, only seconds, to stare with contempt at the occupants of the cage. Noting this, Kurok snapped his head up and stared back at the old goblin with as much teasing contempt as he could muster until the creature left. By then, most of the "audience" had dispersed, some hurriedly, as if they had some other duty to attend to suddenly.

When the shaman had left, the elven woman whispered fervently, “Sit down! Ill timed. We need to heal up. Now you have added to the problem.”

Kurok looked at her with uncharacteristic calmness and a very large smile, as if inordinately pleased with himself.

"No, thankee, missy. Think I'll stand fer a while longer. I found out more than I'd hoped for. Didn't get the react I wanted, but I got the head-hoople-man out here. Now I know who Bootskull is. And I know where our gear and weapons're at."

Then he turned to survey the camp, looking as if he was seeing it for the first time, or as if he was not a prisoner, but the ruler here ...

Subject: Enough already. Can we move on?

My original post citing what I considered to be a lack of courtesy was either misunderstood, misread, or misinterpreted, or even all of the above. Most of the points brought up and attributed to my "criticism(s)" were never even mentioned by me.

So I deleted the posts as a waste of time and energy, and PM'd an apology.

Now I will, once and for all, tell you the gist of my attitude at this point so we can all move on:

I cited a question about actions, having missed the very information I was questioning. Along with that question, I mentioned a lack of what I considered a basic courtesy, nothing more than that. From that point, everything under the sun was addressed except the courtesy I was requesting. What I meant was evidently assumed to be different things by different people. Never was I asked to clarify.

Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that I should not ask for that sort of favor. Nor will I attempt to offer it. I obviously offended some of you with my request. I will not do so again. I will play the game as is being played. The rest, as stated to others, will be left well enough alone.

When Maaht saw the brighter light coming from the off-shoot to the right, he knew that the game had really started, and he looked back at the dwarf with a grin. But he still couldn't hear clearly enough to distinguish what exactly was being said in the lit area, even with the silence he and Gorsh were "providing".

Jevaf's raised-voice threat, was the trigger he waited for. Pushing off the wall behind him, Maaht launched himself into a full-out run into the lit area.

[[ Run at x4, maybe reduced to x2 for uneven floor, still gets him 60'/round and at baddie approximately the same time as Jevaf (hopefully) ]]

His intent:

Activate Energy Shield Draconic Aura on entry to lighted area: Affects Maaht and Jevaf (currently). Any opponent receives an automatic 2 points fire damage on a successful hit on Jevaf or Maaht with a natural or non-reach weapon (basically, that's any melee weapon). Lasts until free-action release. Approaching Jevaf from behind, Maaht will then Jump [[+8]] directly over Jevaf's head from behind (imagine Superman's leaping take-off), disregarding her weapon

[[ I know. He's shorter than she is ]]

He will place his hands on her shoulders, shoving downward to help gain height and distance, to carry him into the baddie, and if she drops and removes that lift, his own jumping momentum will carry him past her as her "support" is removed. Intent is to surprise baddie and bowl him over, gaining time ...

Like you, I like the pratfall/gag character now and then for humor in a game.

I'm sure you'll find whatever setting, game, or level your heart desires here. Lots of 'em going on or starting all the time...

I think Iundertand your reasoning, but if that's the case, then if you were to teleport me wearing leather armor and a backpack, then the armor and backpack would end up around my ankles wherever I arrived ...

I don't see "a person and possessions are transported" as being "what you desire or wish to transport". I see it as the person and whatever is "attached" or "worn", clothing, armorm, gear, weapons, held items, etc. And the chains, being "attached", would remain so/ But it might be wise to get a specific ruling on it from Almerin. He might allow it.

Subject: Bangs forehead a few times on/with [insert weapon here]

the Spell! The SPELL !! Doh!

Yeah, the spell thing could work, but the rage thing added to it could work against us, or at least him.

Rage is a single-minded, instinctive thing. It's not like concentration, which he cannot use or do for the duration. And after the rage, running and hard physical exertion is out. He's not bab-weak, but neither will he be at "peak form" ...

Certain skills and abilities requiring, Wis and Int (and some requiring Dex and Str), are beyond him during and/or immediately after the rage. As weak as he is hp-wise, I'd opt for the Str + Spell combo and hope that works. if necessary, he can rage if they get cornered.

As far as teleporting him out of his chains? I don't think you can get that selective with what you teleport (but I'm not versed on ALL the types of teleportation). In my mind, it's like trying to teleport him out of his armor. Usually, when you teleport or dimension-shift someone or something, all of it goes, not just selective or selected parts ...

I could be wrong ...

Another possibility would be teleporting someone who is already freed, agile, dextrous, limber, sneaky, etc., to sneak out and get something we need, then sneak that back to us to use (?)

Topic: The Chakran Portal - Q/A
Subject: The reason Kuroks's plan isn't made common knowledge ...

I noticed that the DM didn't say they left with the dawn, so I'm thiinking they're still there, watching and waiting -- for something. kurok's thinking may be that a lengthy "sotto voce" whispered conversation would be a tip off to our orcish audience that a plan of action is in progress. Kurok speaks orc, so there's a possibility that one or more of them at least understands Common or Khordish.

So the best Kurok can hope for is to quickly warn the others to be ready to dake advantage of whatever action or reaction he can elicit ...

As a personal aside:
What happens if we don't demand to see Bootskull, thus notifying him/her of our approach (albeit as prisoners)? What happens if we go to Bootskull, en mass, uninvited and as weak as we are, ignoring or bypassing all the distractions between, and take him (or her) out quickly. This could possibly demoralize the camp. We don't know if he/she is the leader or the leader's champion, but everyone in the camp sure seems to know the name and/or respect him/her (or whatever he/she stands for) ...

Just a thought ...

But first we gotta get out of here. Short of getting someone to open the door of the cage (a keyring?), the potion coupled with Kurok's strength (20) might be worth trying. One thing though. We don't have the potion with us, I don't think ...

I was checking possibilities for my headlong rush into the fray that is beginning, and noticed that my Skill Focus Feat (acquired at 2nd level) MUST be applied to the one of the skills granted me by my token dragon (Red = Appraise, Bluff, and Jump). I had applied it to my Metalworking skill. No can do. Will add the Skill Focus (+3) to his Jump skill.

So the changes to the respective skills are:

Craft (Metalworking) from +5 to +2
Jump from +5 to +8

The prices for all would be more than a little out of his current range. He is carrying all he owns with him and would have to trade as well as barter. That means giving up something rescued by his own great (and painful) effort, so for now that's out.

Ters has Teleport in his spell book, and has one scroll already, to that will have to suffice for the nonce.

As to projectile weapons, a suggestion:

The DMG allows for projectile weapons that can imbue each and every (non-magical) missile/projectile used by them with the same elemental property (or properties) described above, either as a +0 magical weapon with the special ability (at 2000 gp) , or as a +1 weapon with the special ability (at 8000 gp). Slings, bows, crossbows, or even thrown weapons like axes, javelins, and darts can be so imbued.

Would these be available? (or allowed in this game?)
