You're right on with the ranges, and the possibility of Bearspaw "getting in the way" (in melee). Max range for most thrown weapons is three (3) increments, unless STR is more than 18. For the javelin this would be 30/60/90 ft at 0/-2/-4.

There is also the possibility that either Jethro and/or Velina could move into his "line of fire", since they haven't posted yet.

But that is not to say that he can't suddenly change targets (or weapons) before he throws, if another opportunity presents itself ...

Ho surprise round. They were already visible (and some mpatiently shifting) in front of you when the human just decided he'd had enough

Assuming Bearspaw moves when the rider lunges forward, he can meet the mounted rider out front (nearly midway) at the end of the round they both bolt forward. He'll still have initiative.

Subject: Okay. Someone just got impatient ...

Once the heir's group had stopped, some subtly readied their various weapons in preparation for -- what? Unknown, as yet. But the opposing riders took note of it and also quietly prepared for what seemed to be a conflict.

Bearspaw restrained his initial instinct to charge with difficulty, quietly telling Velina that he would "try it her way". Velina acknowledged the soft words of Bearspaw, then she called out to the riders ahead, "Is there a toll for use of the road?" She held a slim hope that if a few "coins of the realm" exchanged hands, the out-numbered group would change their outlook.

She was answered by a short burst of laughter from the sheild-bearing one in the front. He called back in a mocking tone.

"Toll? Yeah, there be a toll. The map you got is all it'll cost ya. The hawk what belongs to Mal, here, brought word to us that you been hired to clear out a castle that was hid 'til now. Well, we're gonna clear it out for ya, so ya don' have to risk yer lives. So you can just hand over the map ya got and well do the work for ya. Ya can just keep on goin' on. We don't wanta have to run into ya again. Oh, and we can use the mule, too, so you can bring it to us with the map."

While this exchange was taking place, Jethro was making the others next to him and behind him aware of his assessment of the situation, in hopes that the information would lead to a more intelligent decision for their collective benefit.

Maranda turned her horse sideways so that she could turn to watch behind her and her companions. The five riders ahead seemed to be too confident for a group that was outnumbered. There must be a reason. She readied her bow and nocked an arrow, but did not draw -- yet. It was all too possible that there might be additional, unseen, members of the group in front of them.

In a lower, softer tone, Ether was telling those next to him of his own assessment and suggestions. Whether or not anyone heard was irrelevant to him, for his focus was on the speaker for the other group.

Gunk-karg himself chose to speak next. He was nearly through with his request for the five riders to "stand down" and let them pass, when the "front man" burst out in laughter again. His tone became louder and even more derisive.

"Now, ain't this cute! Orkie-boy here is askin' us ta move aside? He don' want no blood? BOY?!? You must be a elf made up to look like a orkie. No, I don't think we'll be movin' aside."

As Velina turned to admonish Gunk-karg for what she interpreted as "demands", the speaker for the five riders spotting the Elven cleric "taking a bead" on himself, and suddenly turned serious.

"Now, if'n ya wanta defend yer honor, it's your funeral. But the map might just be the way for ya to get away from here alive. Might... Oh, blast! KERREK !! GET BACK HERE !!"

The large dark-skinned human heels his mount hard and breaks away from the opposing riders, yelling, "NO MORE TALK !!" By shifting his weight, he guides the horse directly toward Bearspaw, while drawing back his heavy mace for what looks to be a low swing at the unmounted Bearspaw. He didn't seem to be paying any attention to the now-bellowing speaker.

The speaker raises both hands in supplication. This movement places his shield before his face and chest, but leaves his midriff and lower body exposed. From behind the shield you hear him begin to intone, "Oh, Bane of the Black Hand ... ".

The half-elf dismounts. while the human and halfling in the rear spread out even farther, but remain behind the speaker. The human in leathers begins hand movements, and the hallfing nocks an arrow ...

Image Begin first round

[[ okay. FYI: your group has initiative 90 - feet separate the two groups, so it will be at least two rounds before the mounted rider who "jumped the gun" reaches you. Based on the "lineup" suggested, I have the encounter "looking" as described below ]]

Bez, you're doing fine for your "first time out". keep it up, we'll help.

KoD, you are correct in one aspect, but one could also look at the question as being asked in response to the answer of a previous question (or regardless of any answer) ...

The latter viewpoint is how I will usually handle situations like the current one, but what has happened is not a bad thing, and not beyondd my experience (heh-heh) ...

A leader? Too late for that determination in this encounter, but it's beiung handled. In 6 more days (real0time), we'll all know what to do.

For now, we're all cool. Update coming ...

Thanks. Good information for me as well.

Not new as a DM, but new as a DM in THIS format. I wasn't expecting the flurry of posts so quickly after my update. Now I know better and will have to be "on top of things" sooner for responses.

What's done is done, though and I think I can cover all questions asked in my update.

One thing to note though, in keeping with what Admiral suggested. Remember tht all this is taking place in just a matter of minutes, so a mention that a character didn't gt a response to a question is kinda pre-supposing a refusal. Until an update is posted, it's best to assume that the question was JUST asked and any response is nearly immediate (represented by short "sequential backposts). An example is in my next update. Hope it works ...

Dragonblood, the point(s) you bring up about one leader, one speaker are not really planning outside the game (at least not as I see it).

In a table-top game, while I was describing the two or three days of travel, the players vould have discussed that very thing while I was informing them of the days travels. It is no more than what the characters might discuss at different times as they traveled on the road. Points maide to each other here and there ...

The relationship between Bane and evil is common knowledge. Associations, domains, and dogma are not common knowledge.

The fact that the riders came out from the side of the road and waited to stop you is not a good indicator that they intend to pass, rather the opposite.

Weapons being readied in your group will be as much expected by them as their own reaction would be expected by yourselves. They also quietly ready their own preferred weaponry.

Subject: Are you ready for this?

1st Uktar, Day 2:
Once everyone had gathered at the gate, there began a discussion as to the best route to take. Bezmir and Bearspaw made known their preference for the more direct route, Bezmir because his skills would better serve the group in that familiar terraing of the mountains on that route, and Bearspaw simply because it was the most direct route to what he considered to be a worthwhile fight.

Gunk-karg snatched the map and traced the routes with his finger, describing the putfalls of each, then opting to place his vote for taking the road to Red Larch and then northwest to the forest. He also reiterated hsi intention to follow, while at the same time expressing the same sort of impatience as Bearspaw. Having made hiw own preferences known, he handed the map back to Maranda and waited for a decision, slowly moving toward the front of the gathered group.

After an inital indecisiveness and also dexcribing possible "pifalls" of the various possible routes, Velina agreed with Gunk-karg's vote for taking the road to Red Larch, then striking overland to the forest.

Ether spends the morning's preparation-time simply guaging the caliber of wills and intents in the group, to add that to his "plans of action" at a later date. He was typically silent until the group began their discussion at the North Gate as to which path to take to the keep. His agreement with Gunk-karg to take the road to Red Larch was emphasized by his hurrying to catch the half-orc as he took the lead, waling north on the hiway.

Jethro had already expressed his willingness to follow rather than be a decision-maker. He took up a position in the middle of the group, falling in next to Kannizan. The dwarf began a good-natured banter with the gnome, wondering if the Stonesunder clansman had a headache of the same caliber as that of the bearded one.

Maranda listened in silence. She still warred intarnally with herself about how to go about pulling the group together to act as one. It suddenly dawned on her that if she was uncertain how to do it, then she would have to learn how. But she couldn't endanger the group while she struggleed with the learning process. With that small epiphany came a sudden calm, as if she had made a decisive, game-winning move in dragonchess.

Even discounting her own vote, it seemed that the majority of the group favored taking the road to Red Larch. Good. She agreed with that.

She though about the possibility of being seen as they approached the keep. She seemed to remember that the Magister said that the keep's whereabouts was unknown. She remembered hearing somewhere that most magics were not permanent. If -- and she saw this as most likely -- if the magics protecting it were gone, then it would be in plain sight. It hasn't been found, that she knew of, so her guess was that the keep was within the forest and surrounded by it, not outside of it or on the edge. So it was most probable that the group would be seen from any distance. She hoped.

She heaves a deep sigh and her lips arch in a relieved grin, as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She fell into position in the back of the now-moving group, to observe, to listen, to think ...
The sky is clear, the air crisp and clean, and you all start the journey in high spirits, now that the quest is "officially" started and there is movement toward a goal. Passing, wondering thoughts of whoor what may be occupying the keep is on the minds of some. Would there be hobgoblins, as suggested? Or would there be others, other creatures, "in residence" there. They would certainly find out soon enough. IT was enough, for now, that the group had a common goal

Those with the necessary skills spend some of their time separating from the group to hunt for likely game to add to their meals. Nothing happens before your midday stop and you make good time, a good omen for you all. After a brief rest, with some taking refreshment and a snack, you set off again on your journey. Just before the sun sets, you come across an old campsite, the fire-circle cold, but ready for use again. The ground surrounding the fire-circle has been cleared of the grasses to prevent an immediate fire danger. There is even wood left there by the previous occupants, enough to last quite a few hours, but not all night. A short search garners enough additional firewood for the rest of the night.

[[ assuming you're setting watches ]]

Neither watchers nor sleepers are disturbed during the night's rest, and all awaken well-rested and refreshed in the morning.

2nd Uktar, Day 3:
Still cool, it is, with clouds beginning to roll in from the east. Still, it's mostly sunny and pleasant. Looks like another ground-covering day. The fire is banked and covered with the sand from the sides of the fire-circle to prevent sparks from being blown out to ignite the grassy flatland.

Youi ttravel as before, making good time and again covering a goodly distance before a midday rest. While you rest, chat, muse, think, or twiddle-thumb, it can be noticed that the clouds have moved in more toward the west, and a dark line of what seems to be storm clouds hugs the horizon.

Happening to glance the right direction at the right time, the human heir notices a sudden darting movement to one side of her. Hesitating only momentarily to determine what had moved, she quickly nocks and looses and arrow, piercing and pinning a rather large rabbit to the ground with the arrow, so close was it. She stops long enough to put the suffering animal out of it's misery, then bags it, ties it to her saddle, and remounts.

As of the evening stop, you have again had an uneventful day, and the night is equally restful and quiet.

3rd Uktar, Day 4:
The morning dawns crisp, much cooler, and overcast, with fairly heavy cloud-cover reaching almost to the western horizon. A moderate wind is blowing east-to-west, and the storm clouds noticed yesterday are looming closter. It seems likely that you may get caught in a storm soon.

You break camp, and start your ride across the flatland, as usual keeping an eye out for likely game to supplement your rations. The morning's travel passes uneventfully, atgain, and you break for a midday rest and snack. A lone hawk flies swiftly overhead, slowed only slightly by the fact the bird is flying almost directily into the wind, heading just slightly north of east.

After resting briefly and resuming the trek, it seems that it is going to be another beautiful, if uneventful, day.

You hear the hoofbeats ahead of you just before riders burst out of their covering in front of you and to your right. Five riders on horseback ride out, directly across the road approximately 100 yards aheaad of you, where they slow, stop, and form a wide "V", with the center rider closest to you. There they wait for you to approach them. As you close to half the disatance to them, the symbol on the large shield of the lead person becomes evident -- the Black Hand of Bane. No others seem to be wearing or bearing symbols, so it is unclear as to whether the rider in front is the leader, their power-hitter, or both.

As you approach to within 30 yards, the lead figure, who looks human from this distance, holds up both hands, palm out and yells,"Hold it, that's far enough!"

The speaker is is wearing black splint mail, but no helm, and a sharp eye can see a morning star hanging from the pommel fo his saddle and a crossbow strapped to his back. To either side of him are:.

A half-elf, also wearing splint mail, with a longsword at his hip and a recurrved bow in hand. Hanging from the saddle and covering one leg is a large shield. Under the basinet helm he wears, his light-colored hair appears to be tied back.

A large, muscular, dark-skinned human wearing scale mail and a cloak or cape that appears to be the skin of a large, black-furred animal. Across his back is slung a longbow with a wicked recurve, and in one hand is a large ball mace with the end of the haft resting on the pommel of his saddle. His short, dark hair stands straight out from his scalp, giving the appearance of a dark halo.

A halfling, his small size and small saddle looking incongruous on the full-sized horse he is riding. He is wearing studded leather armor and on his rein-hand he wears a buckler shield. At his hip is a thin-bladed rapier, and across his back is a recurved shortbow.

A slight-framed human wearing traveling leathers of medium gray, with a cloak of the same color which appears to have a bright blue edge to the front and cowl. On his shoulder sits a hawk, which the figure periodically brushes with his cheek.

Image Begin first round

[[ 00c: hurrah! your first encounter.. What will you do? What WILL you do? heh-heh ... I'll allow a little leeway here to set your riding order, even knowing the encounter now ... ]]

However you people want it.

But, based on the order of posts and their ccontent, I visualized the starting order something like this:

Bearspaw gravitates to Velina, but doesn't leave yet.

Gunk-karg voices opinion and starts off, Ether agrees and catches up with him, both on foot.

Jethro rides up to Kannizan, they begin comparing headaches, placing themselves in the middle.

The still-quiet-and--uncomfortable heir brings up the rear.

That's how i envisioned it initially, but there may be some shifting en-route until the group is comfy with where they'll be while traveling. You all decide. There is still plenty of time, yet ...

for the sake of smiplicity ( and to keep redundant posting to a minimum), it might be nice for the group, or the leader, to PM me the following info, when possible. There is no rush for it, but it would simplify things for all concerned ...

Watch cycle (if any)?
"Hot" or "Cold" camp? (and/or reasons for either)
Mounts/animals tethered, hobbled, or free-roaming?
If tethered: singly, or "picketed" (tied together)?
Marching/riding order (if any)?

Any other information describing daily duties/actions would be helpful and reduce the need to keep re-posting them ...

For instance, I am already assuming that those with the skills will be separating from the group pericdically to forage or hunt for food to supplement your rations.

Topic: Inheritance -- the game
Subject: It begins

1st Uktar, Day 2:

The night passes in many different ways. Some few of the assembled group opted to spend time in the Pig In Armor, the tavern across the street from the Inn. While in the estalishment, either immediately after entering or after a short while, the dwarf, gnome, and human heir, noticed one another and seemed to gravitate into a small cluster of their own, each drinking with their own thoughts, but not in silence. Small talk was exchanged, and a certain comeraderie began to develop that helped to relieve the tension of thinking about the unknown. The heir watched as the gnome and dwarf exchanged boasts about drinking prowess, then fell to a serious contest of matching drink for drink, each trying to out-do the other. Much to her amusement, the boasting that accompanied the drinking never turned angry or malicious, and both the dwarf and the gnome stopped just short of being unable to walk. Though no words were spoken as all got up to return to the Inn to rest, there was an obvious, grudging respect that each of the males showed the other.

The half-orc took to wandering the streets of the large metropolis, observing types and styles of dress as if to identify those who would have a full or lean purse, noting the busier and more deserted streets as if planning a route of escape, glancing at verious storefronts and residences as if marking them for future "visits". In spite of his appearance, unusual even here, he stayed in the open, purposely "hiding in plain sight" so as not to draw undue attention to himself for any reason. When sadisfied that he had his "finger on the pulse" of the city, he returned to the Inn to rest.

The elven cleric, after his own jaunt to make purchases, searched for a shrine whereby to pray for his own blessings and those of his companions. He then returned to the inn, still keeping to himself for now, to make plans for possible combat situations the group night encounter.

The two half-elves, after an initial good-humored bout of verbal "jabs" at one another, left the meeting together to do their own purchasing. During their travels, they exchanged views on types and styles of preferred combat, learned something about each others skills, and formed a light-hearted agreement to aid one another if the need arose.

The following morning, each member of the group, as if by tacit agreement to the elven cleric's suggestion to leave as early as possible, retrieved their respectie mounts and made their way throught the already-increasing press of people toward the northern gate of the city of Waterdeep, there to meet and begin their journey. The half-orc, the barbarian, and the elf chose to travel on foot, although the elven cleric was leading a pack mule with gear lashed to a pack saddle.

[[ Okay, just a short one, for now. Since the majority of you know the direction and approximate distance to the forest in question, I highly recommend a discussion/decision on direction (overland/road), order (if any), and any other pertinent info that should be passed. Direction will determine type and frequency of encounters for the beginning part of your journey, so I need at least that much for another update ]]
