Topic: The Chakran Portal - Q/A
Subject: Another question ... for the group:

Has anyone but me noticed that we were not killed outright when captured?

Methinks there's a reason for that. It most likely means our demise may not be so imminent as some might think, me also thinks ...

Ergo: I know we're all low on hit points, but we definitely can't wait until we're at full strength. THAT may mean our demise.

Therefore: Whatever we attempt now may not mean an automatic death and we can afford to take a risk or three ...

So: I have an idea ... (see post)

Subject: An idea ... [ Edit ]

When their "banquet" was delivered, Kurok grinned and told the others, "The taste of this stuff leaves everything ta be desired, but it will keep ya alive. And I fergot to tell ya ta just tilt yer head back and open yer mouth fer the water. It be the only way ta get enuff o' the stuff in yer mouth ta wash out most o' the taste of dinner." He makes a wry face, half smiling.

Kurok began to scrootch his stocky frame to a spot near the center of the cage, putting what distance he could between him and any of the bars. Facing their orcish audience, he spoke first, in almost a whisper, to those of the party nearest to him in Khordish as he moved, "Get ready. Gonna try for a reaction, get one of 'em ta open the gate."

To the orcs, speaking Orc, he says, "Ya gupes watching sommpin' intrestin'? One o' ya's got globes enuff ta maybe come closer ta the freak show? T'inkin' not, cuz I knows there ain't a globe or two on the bunch o' ya's! And I knows ya's can't kill us ta get it, 'er ya's arreddy woulda, tohk? (no?) Shame, too! What ya's missed, and what I still gots, might be worth havin', tohk? Could mean rich and could mean power. Butcha not gettin' nuttin' fer nuttin'. Gonna break my chains here an' take on who o' ya's come ta get it. Got my gonna-do. What's ya's sayin'?"

Kurok then falls silent, his unmistakably taunting grimace showing a mouthful of broken or misplaced teeth, and unadulterated laugther sparkling in his eyes along with the firelight. He looks neither right nor left, but directly at the orc group outside the bars, blinking seldom but quickly. Then suddenly, although still grimacing in humor and sarcasm, his face takes on a pained look of intense concentration, eyes narrowing and brow furrowing deeply. The muscles beneath his armor become taut and bulge with power. Corded tendons in his neck show, along with the veins pumping the blood to his now-straining arms as he now seeks to break the chains. They want a show to watch, do they? By the crushing Hand of Kharox, he'll give them one! He -- -- has -- -- had -- -- ENOUGH !!

[[ Raw attempt to break the chains with brute strength. If he can feel them give, even a little, he will not rage. If they don't seem to give, THAT will anger him enough to trigger it, but he will have already set his goal on breaking the chains, then going for the bars to bend them if he rages. Whatever happens after that, it's all about getting to the orcs and ripping their throats out, one by one, even if he fails. If he fails, and the rage subsides or is quelled, he'll go into a deeply-frustrated funk, but satisfied that he had given it his best shot ... ]]

Kurok is gonna try something, but first:

Are his hands bound in front of him or behind him? Is there a binding link between the bindings at wrists and ankles? I, at least, am not clear on that. It will definitely affect his attempt ...

Also, I hope that she who unbound the others (Elessarae?) heard Kurok's initial sugestion to include the "fuzzy one over there" in their efforts, since he is the same circumstances they are.

I believe he mentioned this soon after they awoke, but I can understand if grogginess affects short-term memory, or if not all of them heard ...

Hearing Drassar's words, Maaht hoped he read them correctly. As the others filed past him (including his metal-clad "kin", thank the fates!), he planted his back to the wall and placed a hand on the shoulder of the dwarf, indicating him to stay also, since they were the two Drassar had "singled out" with his statement ...

He quietly placed his morningstar behind him against the wall. He would rely on the daggers at his back and his "surprise" range weapon for now.

On seeing one of the notices the following morning, Ters knows that he is here for this, his "coincidental" appearance here had to have been orchestrated by the fates. It was too opportune to be anything else. So he followed the direcctions and traveled the streets of the city, getting lost more than once, but finally arriving at the Council's Main Hall. He was not the first to arrive, nor was he the last, but he was sure that he was not too late to be included in the questing company that was forming at the Council's request..

Ters is a fairly tall, slender, human male, over 6 feet tall, who is currently wearing a loose-fitting shirt and pantaloons, both of fine, soft, black leathers. He also a wears a cloak that radiates magic if detected, and has a wand-sheath at his belt and narrow scrollcases poking out of his belt pouch. He is not wearing a head covering or hat. The visible portions of the skin on his face and neck show severe burn-scarring, with an indication that they are not the only areas so marked. His hazel eyes are bright and intense, but are surrounded by faint "laugh-lines" under the eyes and near the temples. His greying hair and beard are cropped to nearly the same medium length, "sculptured" to be easily cared for and maintained. He moves confidently, smoothly, and slowly, with the ease of a person used to rushing only when dictated by circumstance(s).

He speaks clearly and concisely, as if to make certain that he isn't misunderstood. "My name is Tersoal Montwyvern. I am a former adventurer who had retired, and happily remained so for the past five years, until recently. An earthquake destroyed my nome and my laboratory, forcing me to become the itinerant mage you see before you. I am currently homeless and looking to restore that home.":

"What you should know of me? I am out of practice when it comes to delving and seeking danger. That is to say that I am not used to the group dependency on others, for I have had to depend on none but myself for some time. But I am not without skills and knowledge, and I don't have to learn or re-learn much. Reminders of the sort of actions and attitudes you will require of me will come with the remembering and the situation or situations we encounter. As with all of us, mistakes will be made. I will say now that while I will accept constructive criticism if I make these mistakes, I will not abide by being berated or belittled for them. That is not a threat. It is the only such warning anyone will get."

"That being said, I have not forgotten that, as a group, our lives will depend on each other, and I am fully capable and ready to put my life at risk for any or all of you, if the need arises, without prompting. I hope you will accept this as truth and not require me to prove it to you for the sheer sake of proof. If any of you have further questions, I will answer to the best of my ability."

Here Tersoal smiles easily, crosses his arms and waits for the next introduction

Kurok smiled and nodded his head when he noticed that Elessarae had freed herself. As she worked on freeing the others, he would scrootch over to place his wide, squat body mass between her task and whatever guard or guards might glance hin their direction.

When they came to re-wrap their ankle bonds to make them look undisturbed, he simply grunted lowly, "Uh-uh! Not necessary.".

The gobby-lins would have figured them to use each others hands to free their legs, he thought. But then he also thought that if the applied to their legs, why not their hands? While one could not bend his or her wrists backward to get at their own bonds, another's fingers would be able to eventually be able to undo them. So maybe it didn't make a diference whether they openly kept their bonds or not. But better to err on the side of caution ... The fates were showing him still another example of the advantage of working together, as a group or part of a group, being able to count on the actions or efforts of others. Kurok knew that and had experienced it many time before, but he always had trouble remaining in group situations like that. He had been accuse of not acting fast enough or not acting at all, or he just rubbed too many people the wrong way. He was ingrained with the need for solitude and accountability to no one but himslf. Here, hee needed them. Even if he got loose, he could not take on the whole camp himself. They would kill him outright for even attempting it, for being a nuisance, an irritant, a thorn in their side.

He just wished -- yet again -- that he had not "gone raging" when he himself was overrun. He was satisfied with the number of the little, misshappen mistakes of nature he was able to take out when fighting for his freedom and before he was simply inundated. And the blow to the back of the head that ended his efforts did so abruptly. He imagined that the chains he wore were a reminder to him that they took his killing actions personally. He was far from being as supple as the elven woman, or even a human. And one couldn't gnaw through chain links. And there were no knots in the chains, just locks. And he couldn't even see those, for they were both on the underside of the bonds, effectively out of his reach.

The others could no sooner count themselves as nearly free when two orcs passin by the cage stopped, looked at each other. Then they both stared at the wagon-cage and muttered something.

[[ Kurok speaks/understands orc. Could he hear well enough to catch what they said? Hearing normal Listen @ +0 ]]

One of the two orcs moved away, leaving the other to stare at the captives with a knowing, expectant grin after sitting down and putting his chin in his hands as if he was watching some kind of entertainment. After a time, the other (another?) orc returned, accompanied by an additional five more of his kin, all warriors. All of them also sat and sared at the captives.

Kurok didn't like this. It smelled of entertainment. Were they to be the entertainment? An arena or pit battle? One-on-one or mass combat? If so, Kurok expected the odds to be stacked in the captors' favor. If not, it still didn't look good ...

Or then again, maybe it did. He would be able to show them once and for all what Chaks and Khords were about to become, what they were capable of ...

At the sound of the faint voice ordering them to stop and "leave the weapons and others outside", Maaht paused only briefly before piping up from near the back. In my experience, clerics and druids simply pray for their desired spells, ahd their diety grants them (or withholds them) based on the cleric's/druid's efforts to follow the tenets and goals of the diety.

Some of my clerics have suffered the ignominy of receiving NO granted spells or powers, because they severely transgressed ...

And I have had dieties award my characters spells outside of what was requested (as replacements for, or sometimes in addition to, the requested/allotted spells) ...

What is the condition of the cage floor?

Is the wood well-weathered and capable of being dug at (as in splintered) with a hard boot-heel?

[edit]
And along the same line: We have our respective armors? Does the floor look as if it could be dug at effectively with a large buckle from someone's armor?
[end edit]

Or is it frustratingly solid and of quality wood?

Subject: Not certain I'm correct ...

... and any of the Inn-mates can correct me if I'm incorrect, but ...

I view the Red Dragon Inn, not as an establishment in Audalis, although you could probably look at it that way if it's easier. I see it more like a web-based meeting place where games of all genres, settings, levels, and types can be played or created. Audalis is just one setting that can be used as a basis for the games, much like Gamma World, Mylatra, Forgotten Realms, Planescape, Greyhawk, etc. Any of these, or none of them may be used in the games created here. Some have created their own worlds and use them as the setting for D&D, WarHammer, White Dwarf, Star Wars, Star Trek, Ravenloft, SpellJammer, etc.

The world of Audalis is a world created (and still being created) by sword/corcery/fantasy/fiction gamers and their games. A D&D game may be in progress in one land within Audalis, while a White Wolf game may be happening in yet another area of the same land. And although the twain may never meet, either or both games would and could add more depth to the overall Audalis history and description(s).

Seems simple enough in my mind, but in print it doesn't seem to look so simple. Best I could do, and I hope I haven't confused you even further ...

The voice again, speaking this time with a definitely Khordish accent, "I didn't get a name from ya, lad, but by Kharox's Beard!, it's good ta hear ya're keepin' his faith alive! 'Lessaray, girl, are ya a healer?. Handy, that could be. Now if'n any o' ya's need help, jus' ask. I'll do what I can. Now that some o' ya's are awake, they'll start bringing more of that gooey porridge 'n patata stuff for ya's. Well, they will when they think of it, anyway. Tastes like bear dung, but it'll keep ya alive. Been feedin' ya's all some o' mine for a coupla days. Hau-dahk noune! [[roughly = Mercy me!]] More talkin' than I done for nearly a month. But I got sommat ta tell ya's when alla ya's're awake and kinda alert."

When your eyes focus and adjust to the flickering of the bonfire, you see an avereage-sized Khord, but with a not-so-average appearance. Where most Khordish were of dark complexion, including dark hair and beards, this one had a lighter, almost ruddy-tan skin color with light red hair and beard done in a multitude of small braids that were tied with either black cord or silver wire. But the eyes! Where light or dark brown or even black eyes were standard for the Khordish, this one had deep blue eyes. All in all, not the typical Khordish appearance in the least.

He is wearing hide armor, but of a quality seldom seen. On the breastplate is an embossed, quasi-geometric design, almost tribal in nature. The visible stitching was fine and tight, the buckles and fasteners were of fine-grade, satin-finished steel. Red dye had been rubbed deep into the darkened leather, giving it blood-colored highlights in the glow from the fire. Where the others were bound wrist and ankle with ropes, his extremities were wrapped in chains.

The dark elf woman was already unstrapping her climbing stuff and stowing it when Maaht got to the top. She was still silent. When the human and dwarf got to the level of the entrance, they, too, checked their respective items for security after the climb.

While untying his morning star and freeing the javelins in his quiver, Maaht noticed that Mister Goodie-Two-Boots and the cat-thing seemed to have struck a deal, whatever it was. Well and good, for them. Maaht didn't have to know about it, and he didnt have to be in on it. What bothered Maaht was that those two seemed to be in a hurry to get to, oor at, something. Typical.

While checking ang loosening his gear, Maaht mulled a bit over the groups association, as he had done many times before. He knew that the strength of their company was in the disparate ideals and ethics working together, seemingly against all odds. Sure, they fussed at one another at times, argued, but those minor conflicts had never come to blows. Considering his disdain for laws and rules and total ambivalence to good and evil, Maaht found it amazing that the group hadn't split up long ago. But then again, maybe all of them were in it for the same reason he was -- mutual greed. Which meant that his "cousin" -- he mentally spat the word like acid -- over there wasn't as altruistic as he would like the others to believe. But Maaht didn't know if that was the case, and really didn't care. As long as things remained as they were, without physical in-fighting among group members, their association was bearable.

He shook his head, as if to shake off the thoughts like sweat off his brow. Then he picked up and swung his gear into place for travel and approached the entrance also ...

Kurok was still seething about his own capture when he saw yet another group of captives being brought into the goblin encampment. He knew better than to overtly watch the "grot khasturk" -- fresh meat -- as they entered the encampment. That would have gotten him another spear in the side from one or more of his guards. But watch he did, from under half-closed eyelids, his head turned slightly to one side, as if busy with thoughts of his own. He hoped that the sand-brained goblins would put at least one of them in a cell-cage near enough to him to be able to converse. That may be punishable, but Kurok was willing to take that risk. He was surprised when they were all put in the same cage as himself.

The "new ones" were unconscious when they arrived, but Kurok was able to take the gruel they were fed and push it down unconscious throats until some showed signs of reviving.

"Well, well! Back amongst the livin', are we, now? Name's Kurok. Don't talk for now. Ya need yer strength, It can't be all back yet, even after sleepin' fer two days an' nights. Yuh, two. Takes strength to talk. We can do that later. It don't take strength to think. We need to figger out how to get free, and get armed. And we should include the fuzzy one over there. Just brought him, or it, in earlier this night, and he -- it -- ain't awake yet. But it deserves the same chance we do."

He pauses briefly, and looks as if he is trying to decide whether or not to ask something. Then he nods and smiles, as if coming to a firm decision.

"I noticed a few Khordish amongst you lot. Wondered what had become of my race, the we could be so easily captured and subdued. When I re-create the Makaz-Kharl, I intended to show my race, my people, how to defend themselves. Chaks and Khords will never again be an easy target, for anyone, any race!"

The look of determination that appeared in his face as he fell silent showed that he hadn't given up, not yet. Not even in his, and their own, current situation.

By the time Tersoal reached the gates of Wanqir, he was a little more than tired. He tried to maintain a cordial demeanor while dealing with the gate-guards and paying his entry. He even went to s far as to have the watch commander sent for. When the commander arrived, Ters made a very large, loud, and elaborate show of how well he was treated by the guards, and how courteous they were, and how the Good Commander should take these 5 gold pieces and distribute them amongst the men who were so worthy. it was all that Ters could do to maintain his composure when the commander's face fell as he realized that he would no longer be able to quietly pocket the coins for himself..The entire gatehouse could have heard Teroal's ebbullient, effusive, and elaborate praises as well as his request of the commander, so vocal was the mage.

Once through the gate, bouyed somewhat by the humor in his encounter there, Tersoal continued down the main throroughfare, looking for a place to rest his weary bones. Road-weary though he was, he was not foolish enough to attempt to rent at the first place he encountered. He looked for an establishment that showed good and recent repairs, cleanliness, and a pleasing façade. When he found a likely place,he stopped, stabled Shagga, purchased a room with a bed, and proceeded to relax.

[ He'll pay for a single room, or failing that, he'll ask for a room that is currently unoccupied and pay for all the beds in the room. Then he'll inform the innkeeper not to allow anyone to disturb him or enter the room until he, Tersoal, allows it. ]

On the journey to the cave, Maaht didn't say much. He wasn't really at ease with most of the members of the group, even now. And they had already worked together more than once. He didn't like gawd-awful, gaudy paladins. None of 'em. And that the one in the group was one of his own kind was a kick in the b-- umm, well anyway, he liked this paladin even less. But even Maaht had to admit he had been useful, so he tolerated him.

The darkie-elfie was too quiet. Maaht was far from being the type for lengthy discourse, but she was downright sulky, as far as he was concerned. There was a furry cat-person thing that was just different enough to interest Maaht, but Maaht didn't start conversations. He usually ended them. He wanted to find out where this thing was from and what it was about. He knew about dwarves, but the one in the group specialized in archery? Wierd. Other than that, and his red hair and beard he was always fussing with, he was alright, Maaht guessed. The humans in the group were okay, too, as far as that goes. Everyone seemed to hold onto their end of the rope okay ...

What really rankled Maaht was that he couldnt intimidate any of the group. He always had to go somewhere else to take out his frustrations. People were supposed to be afraid of red dragons, and since Maaht had painted his armor that color and then had painstakingly drawn lines in the wet paint to make it look like scales, it should be pretty obvious where his interests and abilities lie ...

Anyway, the only reason that he stayed with the group, at least for now, is that it had been lucrative so far. Maaht liked having gold to spend, and he liked being able to use his abilities and skills. Seeing him do that was what usually made people run from him. He liked that. It's what they were supposed to do.

Maaht wasn't happy that he had to leave Harss in town, but it was only a short walk to the cave, according to their employer, and he wasn't about to leave the animal unattended at the site while he went delving about like a worm in a burrow. He didn't much like "wandering about" underneath the ground. He had done it once before, and that's how he knew he didn't like it. It was fine for dwarves and gnomes darkies and the like ...

When they reached the climb point, Maaht watched elfie strap on some spikes and stuff and start the climb, and he shook his head, thinking <>i"yah! wanna see ol'mister metal-bug crawl up that! ", as he glanced back at the palandin, smiling, but quiet. For his own part, Maaht unslung his quiver, pulled two long leather straps out of it, andused them to bundle his javelins and morning star into the quiver and then tie the bundle to the quiver strap so as not to lose them. he also loosened the straps on his backpack to give himself more freedonm of movement for a while for the climb. Then he started up ...

Subject: Maaht Dahuuple

Height: 5 ft. 1 In., Weight:165, Hair: Shaven and Tattooed, Eyes: Black, Skin: Dark Gray

Maaht's Orcish good-looks were not a problem while living in the orc communities where he grew up. His size, on the other hand, was a problem. His five-foot-one-inch frame was considered "gazharn" (small/petite) for a male orc. But although teased mercilessly and set upon more than once, Maaht's strength and stamina always stood him good stead. those attributes allowed him to win every fight -- every one -- that was ever forced upon him.

It also allowed him to become a bit arrogant, Maaht began walking the village, looking for fights to join. If he couldn't find one, he would make one, start one, or incite one. Finally, when he reached adulthood, Maaht was forced to leave his last home to fend for himself as a result of starting a fight with the chieftain's son and then killing him with a lucky blow (or an unlucky on, as it now seemed). Maaht hurriedly stripped the dead body of its possessions and left, running for his life. He was able to keep it.

Fast forward a few years ...

Maaht had found wherein his desire lay. He knew of dragons, particulary red ones. He knew of the power they wielded, the abilities they possessed. Maaht wanted some of that power for himself. He returned to his former employer and offered to pay the mage to increase the knowledge he had with the knowlede he sought. So insistent was Maaht that the mage capitulated and brought him in again. Later in Maaht's training, he was introduced to a red dragon, an acquaintance of the mage. This dragon was also impressed by Maaht's persistence and offered to teach Maaht himself. Maaht was ecstatic! To learn about dragons from a dragon in the flesh! For 5 more years, Maaht learned what he could from the dragon. When the dragon suggested that Maaht "go wanderin" to take a rest from learning and explore, Maaht had to agree, for though he was not yet tired of learning, he missed the freedom of movement his former life gave him. When the urge strikes him, he will return to learn more about his calling.

So he "wandered' a while, and just recently joined this group in order to have someone to speak to -- about anything. That doesn't mean he will discuss at length. Most likely, ihe wants people around to listen to him speak his mind, nothing more. For now he is experimenting with his new-found abilities ...He hasn't lost any of his arrognce. In fact, it may have increased slightly, due to the Red Dragon power-mindset he is attempting to emulate.. It would just be better for most if they simply agree that he is to be feared.

A half-orc Paladin wanna-do-gooder, and a half-orc Shaman wanna-be-red-dragon (a CE-wanna-be, but can't exactly make the mindset, so he is CN ...)

Both in the same group? I forsee some fun interaction 'twixt Grakh and Maaht ...
