if his (?) eyesight is like my own.

Herr Gruggster, the link is there alright, but even I had to look more than once to find it. For those of usn "old-folk" who suffer failing eyesight, may I make a suggestion?

How about changing the single-word link: here

to something like: at this location

to make the link physically longer and more noticable (?)

Just a suggestion....

First: Everyone but the gnome and the half-orc knows the direction and approximate distance to the closest point of the Kryptgarden Forest. The southermost tip of the forest is north, and is "about" 140 miles 'as the raven flies' or "around" 160 miles if you take the coastal road as far as you can before turning to the east.

Second: Some of the establishments you may notice on the way to either The Market or the Whole Delver's Mercantile might be:

Shining Son Temple (Lathander)
Blades by Tor
Widow Rohl's Bakeshop
Sleaz Brothers Tattoo Parlor
Gray Barn Livery and Stabling
Doc and Sardin's Warehouse
Kato Blipas: Moneylender/Exchanger
Bron Arvo's Armory
Maps and Documents by Tan Shu
Wonderhouse Temple (Gond)
Moe River's Mounts (sign advertising common and exotic mounts for sale)
Sheila Mersa's Herb Shop (sign advertising potions, balms, salves, etc.)

Third: I can oblige anyone who wants a little one-on-one interaction with proprietors via PM, but please keep it reasonable.

Fourth: Waterdeep maps
City of Waterdeep

A minor point:
Quote:

... Placing the parchment aside, he reaches to open a drawer in the desk and pulls out seven small leather bags. One by one, he drops each on the desk. Each bag lands with the audible and unmistakable clink of coin inside them. Then he rose, picked up the map, and rounded the desk, handed it to Maranda He then turned back to the desk and began tossing one of the bags to each of the gathered group. ...

So everyone already has a bag and there are none left on the desk.

Not complaining, it was no one's fault. I wasn't prepared for an either/or situation and tried to forecast a variable as an absolute ...

Topic: Inheritance -- the game
Subject: Cue the Magister ...

Discussions, opinions, points-of-view, and tempers began flying amost as soon as the Magister had closed the door.

The bear-totem-toting chieftain of the northern tribe called for the heir and the duskblade to meet with him outside the Magister's office, then stormed back in in a fit of impatience when they didn't follow him out immediately.

The duskblade, for her part, had questions, but did not openly oppose or withdraw from the task at hand. Long and serious thought about what she heard atound her led to her voicing her inclusion. She looked forward to her skills being tested in unfamiliar territory.

After his initial confusion as to the content of the meeting, the dwarf of the Stonesunder clan realized that humans conducted their meetings by reasoning and rules that differed from those of the dwarven clanmasters. A moment's thought was all it took for the jumbled pieces of the puzzle to fall into place for him, and he committed himself in typical solid dwarven fashion.

The half-orcish late-comer was silent only until he whished to make an opinion known. Atypically, though, he did not speak in anger, nor did he belittle anyone else when he did speak. He made it known that his reasons for going were his own, and not because of any loyalty.

The gnome listened and contributed to the conversation, smiling all the while. He was openly amused at the interactions, but also interested in the loose cohesion of disparate personalities that he noticed was already forming. It indicated possible success in the face of the odds.

The cleric, ever the diplomat, also had his own reason for comtting himself. Altruistic? Maybe. Personal? Possibly. Regardless of personal justificaction, within him was also the general interest in seeing a wrong righted, whether by himself or as a member of a group of interacting individuals.

The heir to the estate, the only pure human in the gathered group, was silent, uneasy, warring internally within herself to decide whether or not she was ready for this. Would it place her in a role of leadership she would rather not have? Did she want the responsibility of the lands and title to which she was now -- surprisingly -- the heir? She wanted time to think this out, but didn't have that luxury. The magister would return, and she must have an answer of some sort for him. And so she asked the gathering, breaking her nervous silence.

"So... ummmm... We're all agreed to go then?"

Almost as if that question were his cue, the Magister re-enterd the office with a light smile on his face and four slender tubes of tightly-rolled parchments in one hand. He strode to his desk and seated himself, laying the parchment tubes to one side. It could be seen tht the tubes were all bound with metal rings, each of a different metal: copper, brass, iron, and silver. Once seated, he waited calmly until the conversation ceased and silence once again reigned in the room.

"So. Maranda, are you satisfied that all present have agreed to aid you to procure your inheritance?"

[[ The following assumes she answers in the affirmative. If not, I'll edit and/or backpost as necessary ... ]]

"VEry well, then. First, this is the map requested of the area in which the keep is reputed to be located." Magister Seedius holds up the parchment tube with the copper band, then puts it down again. Picking up the tube with the silver band on it, he slides the band off and unrolls the parchment that was bound by it. "The Lords of waterdeep have asked that I read this brief statement from them. He clears his throat, then reads the following:
"We, the Council of Lords, offer a few thoughts to the Heir of the Estate of Shallagh Gann: Although it is quite possible that you soon may hold the title of your deceased relative, as of yet you do not hold that honor. You would be wise to remember that until that is accomplished, you should not attempt to make demands of others by right of position you do not yet hold. If successful, those with you are as responsible for that success as yourself. They will not forget it. Nor should you.

For all of you who have come together to execute the terms of the will of Shallagh Gann, as stated, our thought is this. Your methods will be as varied as your skills. Therein lies your strength, no less than it is with ourselves ...

All of you have our good wishes for your quest."

"It seems that the deceased had a certain amount of foresight. Also documented is that each of those who volunteer or accompany the heir in the quest to rid the keep of those who now occupy it should receive the sum of one hundred gold coins to aid them in the preparation for the venture. That is the amount in each sack."

The voucher for your stay at the Fifth House Inn is good for another five days. From here on, all decisions must be made by you, the gathered group, or by a designated spokesperson, in regards to your actions. But I cannot stress enough that you use as many of the thirty days left to you aa you can to accomplish your goal.

Good luck on your quest !!"

[[ Okay, folks, it begins. Lay out your plans, discuss, ask questions, etc. (no "whatever" actions" or running amok, please). I know the holiday season is upon us, so I woo't expect posts until they show ...

Looking forward to some fun with this game, from you and me both ... ]]

to Zodius.

I have tried to contact him again to see if I can get a response or post by Tuesday (which will put me overdue to update).

If he posts, so much the better.

If he doesn't post or contact me by then, I will inform him that his spot is lost. If this happens, the current situation for the group will alter drastically, but not unpleasantly.

I apologize for the slowness of the start but, one way or another, by Tuesday we'll be mobving along again. I just want to make sure of the status of Zodius (gone, RL issues, comp problems, etc ...) Please bear with me.

And gboy, please remember that all of what has happened so far has happened in the space of only a few minutes. It's not like Almyrikon has been waiting for hours.

Or did I misunderstand your post?

If Zodius can post over the weekend, we can still be on schedule.

If not, I'll bump things along a bit. It will leave a chance for more character interaction (a day or three, real-time) until I find out Zodius' status.

Keep in mind that the meeting that the group is attending is still in progress. After the Magister leaves, what has been happening so far has transpired in just a relatively few minutes (game-time).

Looking good so far, folks !!

at your dwarf's musings, Bezmir.

Much like my nephew's dwarven character, Kilmorrigan Singhammer, that he played in my table-top games.

In brief:
He wanted to be a smith, but didn't have the aptitude. Not wanting to be a "mere" miner, he ended up in the clan temple as an acolyte and screwed that up. He was able to get a second chance in the forges and made his first tool, a small hammer, as a "test project". When he struck the anvil with the hammer to test it, and the head shattered into five shards. Four of them struck bells in the forge-room (hence the name Singhammer), and the fifth shard struck one of the forge-masters in one eye, costing him the use of one of that eye.

Disgraced and embarrassed, Singhammer left the clanhome to become a mercenary warrior. It still rankles him to this day that he cannot become what he most wants to be, but he has made his place in the world ...

After Velinha has voiced her questions, a clerk pops his head through the gap in a quietly-opened door. The Magister holds up his hand signalling a pause, then uses that same hand to motion the clerk into the office. The clerk approaches, rounds the desk, and leans down to whisper into the Magisters ear.

"Oh? ... ... Yes, your were right to do so. ... ... ... ... Please have a chair brought in and show him into the office. Afford all courtesies."

As the clerk scurries out Magister Seedius addresses the group again. "It seems that one other message has been delivered, and the recipient has just arrived. Please bear with me for a moment, until he is seated, and I can begin again." The words were no sooner out of his mouth than the office door opens again, and a clerk carrying another chair like the rest of you already occupy. Behind him is a tall, slender half-orc, wearing nothing but a chainmail shirt, a belt with a greatsword hung from it, and a small, leather-wraped bundle tucked into that belt.

The new arrival stops just inside the door and scans the room slowly, ceiling to floor, front to back, and side to side. Seemingly satisfied, he moves to the vacant chair and seats himself.

[[ in the interest of brevity here, I will note the Magister, with visible signs of slight annoyance. reiterates all the information in the intro post, including the names of those present and why they were included on the "list" ]]

"Gunk-karg Rooka-darg, your own presence on the list of possible heirs of the deceased is just short of reprehensible, as far as I am concerned, but it is legal, regardless. It is documented that the deceased placed your family's name on the list under duress. The reason for it is also documented, but is legally irrelevant here and now. It should be obvious that, had the deceased been able to provide issue from his marriage, none of you would be here now. As it turned out, his only effort to that dilemma was taken from him along with his wife. Therefore, Gunk-karg, legally, your claim is as valid as any of the others here who are of no blood relation.

[[ yada-yada the rest of the intro post ]]

"Yes, Velina, a map of the area can be provided but, as I mentioned, the exact location of the keep is unknown. I doubt that even Kannizan, here would know of it's location, for the deceased was known t6o have hidden the keep with his magics, in keeping with his hermitage. "

Magister Seedius, reaches up to pull a bell-pull and, a mere few minutes later a clerk pops his head intl the doorway without knocking. The Magister smiles and says, "Wake Reddeg the carto-savant. A map is needed of the area surrounding Waterdeep and including Waterdeep, the Kryptgarden Forest, and the mountains to the north of Kryptgarden" The clerk nods once and ruxhes off.

To the gathered group, he says, "The map will be done in about half an hour. I will return with it in my own hand. But I cannot provide you with the map or anything physical until the lot of you have fulfilled one action described in the will.

"Any supplies you deem necessary can be purchased at one of two places, the Open Market in the city's Central Plaza or, my personal recommendation, the Whole Delvers's Mercantile, directly east on the very street this Court is on, approximately an hour's walk."

"Proof? Not knowing the circumstances, location, or current condition of the keep, that would be impossible to answer with certainty. And, again because of the legalities, I cannot provide you with that information. I am certain that those of you who travel to the location will be able to provide some proof of completion of the terms of the will, if and when that is done. Even if not, there is an option that I may not legally provide you with until the time comes for it's necessity.I will leave you now to to perform the most important action required of you by the will, even though it is not the first one listed."

He stands and moves around the desk, exiting through the office door ...

And while D&D was originally designed to be a humanocentric game, the only pure human in the group had a 1 in 7 chance of being the heir. Maybe te dice gods are still humanocentric ...
