Topic: Quests
Subject: D. . .All of the above

To quote Bromern:
So, give me a group of people with talent, and a desire to play the character, and I don't care how long, or what type of a quest, we're playing.

To quote Eol:
Give me a good group of players, plenty of interaction and development, and you can throw all manner of quests, side-quests, back-quests, and whatever else you want at me.

This one agrees with both of the above, and with Admiral concerning time frame fluctuation. I believe that it is not the DM that makes the game, it is the players. Most DMs will admit to getting plenty of inspiration from good players themselves during the course of a game, or even a session.

Not to pat myself on the back, but I ran a questing game once that was finished in three five-hour sessions. The players enjoyed it so much they didn't really want it to end. So I allowed an "intermission", of sorts, for the characters to rest and recoup, then started them on a quest in which the object of the first quest (a rescued son of a noble) held key information to solve the new quest, which was why he was abducted to begin with.

I made it a point to tell the players that they were the inspiration for the second quest, and they rewarded me with yet another insightful flash that led to a third and fourth quest by the same company, all related to each other and ascending in inportance, wealth, and reknown for the characters. The series of quests culminated in a bard (a second character of one of the players given temporary npc status) writing a ballad of the party's exploits, and a letter of recommendation for each character from the noble involved. The results of these letters is still ongoing as one-on-one scenarios with each gamer, when time allows.

[ deeeeeeep breath ... ]

The point is: Players with intelligence, knowledge, and an honest desire to see a quest completed -- coupled with well-developed characters and interaction makes the time frame irrelevant, as far as I'm concerned. A real joy is to have this all come from relatively new players (this entire group had only a few months experience in the game between all of them).

Topic: The Spores of Itanlok - an Audalis Short Adventure
Subject: saved from more questions ... (woo-hoo! page two!)

Groth allowed himself to be dragged onto the "dance" floor by the youngster, and dutifully began the bob-and-weave of Catch the Badger. Tarrgot's flapping wings told him that he was staying put on Groth's shoulders for the duration, but didn't approve of the gyrations that threatened to shake him off. So Groth obligingly subdued his movements. Shame though. Grothtorg believed himself to be a farirly decent dancer.

The youngster had questions. Oh, he had questions! The bird's name? Half twirl with outstretched arms.

Groth answered the youth's movement with a bending creep, two steps right. "Tarrgot. Tarrgot, say hello to the youthful keeper of the way.." In response, the owl bobbed his head at the youngster, who was beaming a large smile at recognizing the compliment that had been applied to him. But the youth was not done yet. About the braid? Sinking to his knees, then jumped up like a spring.

Still bent, hopping in a circle on one foot while pivoting on the ball of the other. "Good sir, in all honesty, I could not do the tale justice during the brief period of this dance, so I will refrain from boring you until afterward, if that meets with your approval."

Party clothes? Wide-legged, tilting, wobbling three-step. This question elicited a guffaw of genuine laughter from Grothtorg, as he did a duck-and-slide to the left to counter the young male's "stalking" movment opposite him.

"These are my party cloths, young sir! I am away from proper society for quite lengthy periods of time, and keeping up with the clothing styles as they change is impossible. I would not be caught dead in an out-of-style garment of any cut or color. But leather is always in fashion, if dyed the correct colors, and it is more durable than most fabrics. And leather seldom needs smoothing or wrinkle-pressing, if folded correctly and of good quality. . "

The dance, the music, and the interview was interrupted by the entrance of another. His apparel suggested that he was not a guest, and the obviously-injured child he held said much more. A female screamed the child's name, her terror evident in the question of why and how directed at the child's carrier. The stranger tried to briefly allay her fears to see if aid could be brought to the child quickly. He made a call that included the entire number of the gathered celebrants, but was answered by only one, ant that after a brief silence. He who ansered was none other than Loco FungiHammer!

Groth was, at first, quite surprised to see the cleric here. but to hear him volunteer his skills to heal the child so quickly, was just short of amazing to Groth! The Khord had voluntarily disappeared form sight, and then from mind. To turn up here, as a guest of the wedding couple, then to be present when someone needed his skills simply boggled the mind. Groth wondered if anyone besides himself was as amazed at the event unfurling here. But :Loco wasn't done surprising Groth. Not yet. After healing the child, he swore an oath to the mother, and to all present, to bring the perpetrator of this damage to justice!

This oath was met with chaos as many party-goers remembered that the injured child had been playing with their own in the mushroom forest nearby. A mad rush for the stairs started, but was halted by an armored warrior wearing leather and chains, one Thagovar. At first, the crowd did not heed his claim to find the children and bring them back, but with only a few chosen ones, not a confused and confusing mob. The GemHound then was able to defuse the crowd-madness calling for the parents of the children deemed lost, to come toward him, and away from the door, clearing a way for volunteers to approach Thagovar.

But that call for volunteers did not go unheeded. Before Groth could add his own voice to those who would go, there was a seemingly timid response. One that seemed uncertain, but volunteering nonetheless.

Groth turned to his dance-parner. "Young sir, please forgive me, but I must help these others. Someone once gave me the opportunity to grow up when I could have died. If I can prevent the loss of a child and have it grow into the worthy adult you will be, I must do so."

With that, he weaves through the crowd, emerging from the front to say as he strides forward, "We, Grothtorg Jaspersand and Tarrgot, will add to your effort! I hope you will wait for a short while, so I can return attired in the proper gear for this task."

He heads up the stairs to his lodgings to retrieve his armor, weapons and gear.

Admiral?
If you don't have it, try downloading the Firefox plug-in for Shockwave Flash Player, and the streaming player should work. I had that problem too, until I downloaded and installed the plug-in.

t_catt? My own problem with the page and it's accompanying audio is that it's streaming audio. Out in the boonies where brother and I are currently located, high-speed Internet is no longer an option, so we no longer have the capability to handle that form of audio. It don't work well with dial-up speeds. Takes forever to download in fits-and-spurts ...

Looking at the source-code, it looks to be embedded in .swf format (?). Any way to get a downloadable version in .wav format?

Not absolutely necessary, but I would like to have a copy. I just dont have the patience (or ability) to listen to it in streaming format(s).

Character Description:
Isilifeline is tall for her race though she does have the slender figure and and natural grace of her kind =. Her movements demonstrate both her agility and strength since she possesses an athleticism combined with wiry strength and toughness that makes her just a bit different than other elven maidens of her social level. Her hair is pale silvery gold like pale electrum, her eyes are a soft violet that lighten and darken, echoing her emotions. Her skin is like fine cream with a slight apricot blush on them.

Isilifeline frequently wears soft tones of gray or taupe or lavender-grays on the road, soft high riding boots. Belt and two belt pouches, complete her usual outfit for the road. Her weapons include a longsword on her left hip an bow slung over her shoulder two quivers one on her right hip and one on her back. and a dagger and a quarterstaff that she carries when she walks. She is good with other weapons but does not currently carry them on her person..

Traits:
Isilifeline is a crusader for good, truth, and justice. Justice to her is more important than law (NG). She is an altruist, but not paladin like. She believes a stitch in time can save nine. She is dependable, even tempered a reflective thinker, self-controlled, and also very slow to anger but it can be raised to a fiery level especially by injustice. She is thoughtful of others; she is tolerant of differences, but intolerant regarding acts of evil or evil doers depending on severity of evil. Personality traits included; loyal, outgoing, stable, energetic, and proud. She is reverent to her Deity but not a zealot. Isilifeline enjoys meeting new people stemming from her early life as a diplomats daughter. She is good with children, humanoid and animals and has a special place for all who are orphaned and in need. In battle, Isilifeline is balanced in battle, neither overly aggressive nor overly cautious. If someone asked for quarter, she can be merciful. She is a peacemaker, using diplomacy, learned from her father, whenever she can, though her sword and bow are ready if needed. She is brave but not foolish. Isilifeline appreciates fine things but does not need to own them.

Bio and History:
Isilifeline is an elven maiden born into a minor noble family. She had three older brothers and one older sister. It is from her brothers that she learned how to handle a sword and a bow. She wanted to be like them. They were adults when she was born and she adored them for their loving nature. Two of them joined the military. They would do anything for her. It made her a bit spoiled when she was young but she outgrew that as she matured. Her father is a member of the elven court and a diplomat, and her mother is a Cleric of the Light. She is her parent’s youngest child. In her youth, she loved to dance and sing, and play the elven flute. She also loves to embroider and read. She traveled much with her parents since her father was a diplomat. Isilifeline grew up with her military brothers and wanted to follow them into the military — much to her mothers displeasure, at first. However Isilifeline was sure that is what she wanted to do and finally her mother just had to see that it was her calling in life — which, unfortunately for her mother, does not included a family and children of her own, currently or in the foreseeable future..

Isilifeline’s best weapons are bows without a doubt. She became quite the archer even before pursuing a military life. She served in the Elven Maiden Light Horse Archers for a couple of years before setting out on her own-adventuring She is good with single handed swords, especially longswords. Her penchant for orphaned animals has her saddle with a young dog that was orphaned that she took in and raised. It is a medium large dog of mixed heritage perhaps part wolfhound from it bristly hair of mixed colors mostly black grey and some tan.

Character Description/History:
In his youth, Gael desired to become a knight, a vassal of the lord, to battle the insurgents of his government. Through that path, he would ride alongside the best and achieve fame through every day and night he lived through. He likes to say that it is, quote, "in his blood"; his father Ginnyi was an established warrior granted his own benefice, and Gael would aspire to rise up to the same station as him. This ambition was pushed even further when Ginnyi was killed by religious knight crusaders. These Crusaders disdained Ginnyi, anyone like him (son included), and their atheist King; Ginnyi, his son and others in his group were recruited in the path of “knightly nobility” from every corners of the country due to their fighting ability. They were gathered together to increase the desperate King’s chances in winning his battles.

As Gael fought on, it would start to manifest that being a dog to so-called "absolute loyalty" did not suit him. Personal disagreements cost him "his dream" as a knight. So he becomes the leader of his own independent group and is now an outlaw.

Shoulder length auburn hair and halberd are characteristics. Gael is tall and has a somewhat robust body. He wears studded leather armor to fully use his agility; and frankly, since he left knight duty, attaining money has been tougher even through mercenary work. So he has spent it on his current armor/weapons and some small housing (or is it stronghold??).

Gael is an atheist, and a personal sense of justice is so strong, he can get short-tempered when he sees someone feeling uneasy around another. Enjoys fighting.

Grothtorg has made his presence known, as well ...

Topic: The Spores of Itanlok - an Audalis Short Adventure
Subject: Oh, he's here, alright ...

Grothtorg was surprised to be invited to Kretarund Orehand's wedding. While he knew the new husband's family fairly well, and the new wife's family just barely, he knew neiher of the matrimonial couple personally -- at all. But Groth did not turn down an excuse to drink. No self-respecting Khord would. And taken for all, in all, the celebrations of the last two days had been pretty decent.

Grothtorg's family was a deeper-delving clan than most of the Khordaldrum they knew and, for that reason, were one of the richest of the clans in their area -- in a very large area, for that matter. While most of those in any Khordaldrum clan who had the wanderlust became warriors or defenders, some few had a different "slant" to their thinking and became clerics or "cavers" -- rangers with unique abilities attuned to life underground. Grothtorg was one of the latter. His choiceof profession and training was not looked upon with disdain, but rather with a shrug of the shoulders and mute acceptance.

And speaking of clerics, where in Kharoxes Beard had the matrimonial couple managed to find "Old Loco"? Grothtorg had long been under the impression that the cleric had died. It had never dawned on him that the old stoneface had just disappeared, for whatever reason or reasons. Looking at him now, though, Groth wondered if he was even aware of where he was or what was going on here. He had seen other clerics in the throes of communion or prayer that had a similar look, and some mages that were in intense concentration for the casting of a long and powerful spell that also looked such-wise. But 'Loco's' look was far beyond that. An almost-disassociation with reality , as if he was having some sort of vision and was focusing on that rather than the here-and-now. Had he decided to join the Khord lifestyle again, to associate and teach those who did not know? Grothtorg sincerely hoped so.

Seeing the new husband rough-wipe his beard after emptying his flagon, Grothtorg stroked his own single-braided beard, which was tied with a black strand of leather. He took inordinate pride in the premature graying of his once-black hair and beard. While it makes him look decades older than he is, it makes him as unique in looks as he is in profession. His hair, worn tied back in a simple tail with a leather strap, was a close match to the rough gray-white of his usually-worn Rhino Hide armor. His tanned skin and brown eyes also are nearly the same color. Taken in all, his entire appearance is just slightly out of the ordinary. His dark skin and eyes were in contrast to the cream-and-tan leathers he was currently wearing for these festivities.

As he passed through the crowd of people here, he caught snatches of comments here and there:
"... that's the one. A caver. A loner, him. Must not like people much ...",
"... Oh! Oh! I know him! Grothtorg Jaspersand. Saved a group of clan miners from a pack of howlers, they say ...",
"... did he have to bring the bird? Is he showing off, or what? ...",

The companionship of his owl, Tarrgot, was not so much a result of choice as a result of chance. Tarrgot was one of two young, fledgling chicks which Grothtorg rescued, to be raised and fed by him. One of the two died a short time after being rescued, but Tarrgot grew to be a healthy bird, and became Groth's new companion. Groth prizes Tarrgot for his ability to see, and maneuver, in the extremely low light of some caverns and tunnels, and seldom seen without the bird accompanying him.

Groth noticed the new groom attempt to converse with a Gemhound, getting a brief distracted reply, and being abandoned. Kretarund took it in stride and was soon accosted himself by a female, who dragged him out to the floor and began to Catch the Badger.

Groth watched for a while, smiling at the antics of the two. They were both doing a very credible interpretation of the dance. Then the drums "kicked in" and the floor began to get crowded. Groth began to look for a partner to join in, but by the time he began his search, all the available, unattached females were already dancing, and those that weren't had a male wearing a stern visage next to them, discouraging inviations ...

Subject: How deep are the waters of Waterdeep?

Many are the rumors on the docks of Waterdeep, a large number true, some not, and most unverifiable. But one rumor, or fable, or story recurs at almost every tavern or inn, to almost anyone who will listen, from almost anyone that works the docks, Captains and longshoremen alike.

The Sinking of the Coral Witch.

It is said that the master of the Witch, a Captain Fallendaun, was on her way into Waterdeep's spacious harbor to dock, unload, and spend a few days in calm and friendly waters. She never made the docks. A series of lightning bolts were called down suddenly upon the hapless ship by an irate druid named Triluvver, whom the captain had shorted an entire shipment. Well, that was the druid's story later, as it turned out. But the lightning bolts called by the druid weren't the worst of it. It seems the captain of the Coral Witch had also missed a delivery to a powerful mage, one Dansinn Piggeboi, "Piggy" to those who didn't like him, which was the majority of folk in the area.

As the assault by Triluvver began, Piggy was both surprised and elated at the unexpected aid in destroying the livelihood of the offending Captain Fallendaun. The concerted attacks of electrical energy lasted only a few brief minutes, but was more than ship, master, and crew could take. Not one soul was able to leave the ship's deck alive, so sudden and violent were the coincidental attacks. The ship plunged out of site beneath the waters of the harbor in less than 3 minutes. It is said to sail the deeps of the harbor, trapped and unable to leave due to the anchor of mystery the surrounds it's destruction, for the two responsible for the demise of shop and crew have long since disappeared and have yet to be brought to justice.

Recently, a specializing diviner/sage, one NeoMaximillianus zund Dweebie claims to have found an obscure reference in a tome that is purported to be written by a wizard who claimes to have witnessed the destruction of the Coral Witch. The reference alludes to the entrapment of a water elemental in the hull of the sunken ship, captured quite by accident during, and by, the powerful energies unleashed by the two casters upon the ship. He has called for a party of adventurers to help him free the elemental and thereby gain it's good will, or at least its debt. But first you have to get past the spirits of the dead captain and crew.

Are you up to the task? For a party of 21-24 adventurers of levels 4-6.

... if you have figured out yet how to get the new person to us.

But I won't ask that.

But we could sure use him.

But I don't need to say that either, so I won't.
