well, since everything else i planned on running is dead in the water until i can get a new hard drive, i've been working on another game based on SpyLite, which is in turn based on Microlite20 and Spycraft.

The game I'm finishing up is loosely based on British gangster films, a personal favorite of mine. Think Guy Ritchie and old-school Michael Cain and you'll get the idea.

The premise for the campaign is that you've been brought (forcibly) before a high-ranking crime boss who needs some work done. In return for your temporary employment, he will grant you a small neighborhood in London. If you refuse, he can and will make life a living hell, possibly involving you taking a deep sea dive into the English Channel.

The players are a small-time gang looking for a big score. This could be it.

Interest?

I managed to have a minor car accident the other day. I'm fine, but the hard drive on my laptop bit the dust. All my notes for Stirrings in Kirkenheim are therefore dead. So while I try to recreate it from my miserably poor memory, the game's on hold. I do have a hard copy of another game, and I'll post it to recruitment if any of you are still interested.

Regards,

F.

Microlite uses 4d6, drop lowest, but I was thinking 2d6+6 to make it a little more even.

Alright, i've got the bare bones of an adventure worked up, but i kinda want to officially gauge interest while i flesh it out a bit.

Who's interested? We'd be using Microlite20 (free, and basically stripped down old school d&d), and 4 random parts to character generation - race, class, your background, and a quirk are randomized.

The setting...well in theory it's sort of a parody of traditional D&D, but i can take it in a more traditional direction if that's the consensus.

You'd be more than welcome.

I'm probably going to use either 2e or the (gosh, I love free stuff!) Microlite 20 rules. Got most of it worked out, so I can probably get an adventure worked up. Keep at me about it, I tend to forget things.

Topic: Stirrings in Kirkenheim - An Altars and Archetypes Adventure
Subject: Stirrings in Kirkenheim - An Altars and Archetypes Adventure

Midsummer's heat hangs heavy in the air, weighting down everything like a merchant's iron. Afternoon gives way to evening, and fireflies begin their waltz to the gentle fiddling of crickets. The last rays of light strike the stained glass of the town's small chapel at the end of the main street, reflecting in unnumbered rainbows across the village of Kirkenheim. Nestled into the Highcrag mountains, it seems as if no evil could befall its pedestrian inhabitants. Only a generation ago, marauding warbands from the North of Vastapir had left the village undisturbed while burning and pillaging so many others nearby. The people thanked whatever they believed in for being spared. St. Ember, the stars, fate, or dumb luck; whatever it was, it had kept them safe, allowing them to live in blissful peace within the small mining community's confines.

Now though, there are rumors of things roaming the night, and people talk in hushed tones away from the prying ears of children about even darker things that wander the countryside and make their homes in dark places. It is this time and this village that you've made your way to on your travels.

The village in still as you come upon it, a tapestry of rural bliss, complete with candles in the windows, flickering in the gentle breeze. The Summer's Light festival is being held here as it is in many towns, the townsfolk more accustomed to lives of labor and trade than adventure. An Argent Rider sits on his white steed near a hand carved and gilded sign bearing the name "Kirkenheim." The Rider notices you and waves you over.

"Hail, travler. The roads nearby are not hospitable for wandering beyond nightfall, so you'd best take your rest here for the night. The local inn is just up the main street. Das Zwei Hunds it's called, and the owner, Ivan, tends to have a few rooms to spare. Not many travelers make their way here these days. St. Ember guide you, traveler, and rest well."

The cobblestones tap gently underfoot as you make your way down the main throughfaire, guiding you down the street and to a battered sign with a pair of dogs with an eye patch each. It's the Zwei Hunds Inn, and it looks cozy enough for a weary traveler's respite. You enter and take a seat at a battered table in a weathered chair. It's early for the tavern's usual patrons, so you essentially have the place to yourself.

A stout dwarf walks over, wearing an apron that may never have been white and wiping his thick hands with a greasy rag. The dwarf places hands on his hips and adjusts a worn leather patch over his left eye. His accent is as thick as his meaty ands, and there's a hint of "Don't make trouble" to his voice. However, he seems pleasant enough, providing one stays on his good side, and it sets you at ease.

"I have not seen you in here before. I am called Ivan, and I own this inn. I can bring you drinks and fresh stew and offer you a reasonable room if you are a traveler. What brings you to Kirkenheim?"

OOC: For those of you wondering, an Argent Rider is a sort of officer of the law, known for their silver bracers and finely crafted falchions.

Actually, it's not all that new per se, but since I've recently gotten things started again, I'm working on three different settings/rules mods for the Microlite 20 system, so if you're interested or just want to see what I've been up to lately, take a look.

http://steamworkslab.wordpress.com/

And if anyone wants to contribute (read: donate) anything from art to playtesting, drop me a line. The three games are still in the planning/dev stage, but they'll get done soon enough. By the way, they're all going to be released for FREE!!! Yay free!

Later on, there's going to be stuff on there involving the Realms of Syonia (And I'm thinking about changing the name of it, just by the by) and another full on setting.

If you help, your name goes in the credits!

And lastly, the blog itself is still in transition, so please excuse the mess so far.

Subject: Hijack an Adventure Hook

I ran across this game while looking for (naturally) adventure hooks. It works like this.

Someone posts a basic adventure hook, and someone else utterly changes it. (Cliches are preferred)

Example:

Innmate 1: A young dragon approaches the group...

Innmate 2: ...and cries to the party about how a knight came and slayed her parents.

So for starters, here's one

You're sitting around at the Red Dragon Inn. A mysterious stranger walks through the door...

You get exactly what you wish for. A blue hat.

But, a sudden downpour causes the hat to shrink, fusing to your head. Grab a chisel. You'll need it.

I wish for inspiration.

Those actually sound like a blast! I'd love to give those a try sometime.

This idea though, is simpler. Basing the random thingies on races, classes, and a background, you'd pretty much make three dice rolls and have a basic character. Here's what I came up with:

a d4 roll for background, a d6 for race, and a d8 for class. The class and race are pretty self-explanatory, but the background gives you a starting point for your character as well as determining the amount of starting gold.

I'm basing most of the other crunchies off AD&D 2e, though I'm thinking of streamlining it. It comes down to making it accessible for newbies and a challege for vets. I'm kicking around some other things, but that's the gist of what I came up with.

Maybe it's the fact that insomnia struck again, but I had an idea this morning.

What if...

Someone ran a game with the premise of throwing players outside their respective character picking comfort zone?

This would involve

1) Choosing a neutral system (I'd vote Pathfinder or 2e, but that's just me. Maybe something more rules-lite?)
2) Randomizing who gets what type of character
3) Having a crazy blast

In my idea, the PCs are thrown into a world that doesn't take itself too seriously. No mass of masterminds or hordes of hobgoblins. NO! The plot would be fast and loose with self-referential humor, genre tropes a-plenty, and generally fun and mayhem ensue hand in hand.

But I dunno, just a thought. Anyone tried something like this before? Thoughts in general?

Topic: The Book of Thorne, The Lost Chapters
Subject: The Book of Thorne, The Lost Chapters

For those of you following along at home, the campaign I'm running on here (Realms of Syonia- plug, plug) is based in the same world as the novel/collection of short stories I'm working on named The Book of Thorne, which follows the adventures of Kriegar Thorne and his companion/sidekick, an exiled Winter Court Faerie, Yves.
The prologue to (possibly) the series and (more likely) campaign setting I'm posting here, and a little later, I'll post a little background about Thorne and Yves and their adventures. Read and critique if you please, Innmates!

-------------------------------------

Prologue - Prelude for Syonia

They say the elves named the world "Syonia."

The elder races, Dwarves and Elves, existed for long before memory. Some say they were created with the world, images of the Old Gods, flesh incarnations of Their time was a time
of wonder, an age of magic.

It was in this into that time that men came into being. The elves, noble creatues they were, embraced the younger
race as brothers. When it was discovered the creatures held an innate ability for magic, the elven magi began to teach them of their ways.

Alas, the humans, short-lived and greedy, began to twist the pure elven magic into darker and darker directions. They formed an empire of magic, guarded by magi who commanded the fury of nature, spirit, and darker magics, blasphemous to the high elves who trained them.

Eventually, the high human magi, pursuing more and more power, began to war one with another, and into the fray the elves joined, brother against brother. The mighty armies clashed for generations until the two most powerful magi met on the battlefield. Each mortally wounded, they channeled the last of their energies into a great burst of pure power. When the powers met, the resulting eruption of magic ripped the very would asunder, creating what we know as The Rift.

The world as they knew it was lost as the energy leveled human and elven city alike, leaving little but rubble and death behind. The ones that remained, homelands lost, began to wander. Years passed, ages lost to time itself.

Eventually, the humans crossed the Eastern
Mountans through what came to be known as Messerschneide, the Knife Edge. The men beheld a land of forests, lakes, mountains, and a beauty they believed had been lost. Building a grand city on a lake, they settled there and named the land after a great hero. They named it Helmsgaard, and once again, humanity began to flourish. The memory of
the old lands, the old magic, and the bond of friendship with the elves was all but lost. Heroes and cities rose and fell, until now. Now is a time befitting to embrace a New Age. Only the bravest stand ready. It's a time of new heroes, new legends. It is the time, once again, of the Realms of Syonia.

Note: Worked this up tonight and am currently deciding whether I like it or not, so it may change.
