Stardate: 2368.04.10
USS Discovery holodeck 3- 0900

After finishing his homework John considered the best way to give his report. On his last ship he usually preferred giving reports on the holodeck. He figured that the visual and tactile stimulants gave a more accurate and informative briefing. That and he liked the theatrics of it. However, this wasn’t his old ship and he wondered how well such a tactic would be received. Only one way o find out. He thought to himself as he made his way to holodeck 3. Let’s see I’ll want a demonstration of it’s range and three of the yields. John considered as he typed his desires into the holodeck programming. I suppose I should do a demonstration of yield 1, yield 10, and yield 16. I should also give a demonstration of the result of yield 16 too close to the ship and of the results of matching the frequencies of ships shields.

“Now with that done I might as well work on the other issue. Computer locate Chief McCall.” John said aloud.
=/\\=Chief McCall is in Ten-Forward.=/\\=
“Thank you” John said entering the turbo lift. “Deck 10” When the lift reopened John had to check himself before he ran over two enlisted. Stepping out of the turbo lift a little slower John headed to Ten-Forward. After entering Ten-Forward John noted that it was practically empty. Not surprising considering it’s the start of a shift. Night Watch is probably getting ready to sleep. Locating Chief McCall was extremely easy, and would have been even if Ten-Forward was crowded.”

“Stupid F**ing replicator. There’s nothing wrong with it, yet the cocoa isn’t changing.” Chief McCall said after sampling her tenth cup of half drank cocoa.

“Ensign John Warwick reporting.” Ensign Warwick said as he cautiously approached the table.

“Oh, Hi! Sorry about that its not been the best day.” Chief McCall said as she started blushing. “I’m Engineering Chief Tanyi McCall. But you can call me Tanyi as long as it’s not in front of Cmmdr. Kennedy.” She winked as she said this last bit. “Reporting…Ok go ahead.”

“I’ve finished my report on the new torpedoes and now I’m told you have a cocoa crisis.” John said smiling. I like this chief. he thought to himself.

“Ugh! Yes!” Chief McCall. Tanyi John reminded himself. “We’ve gotten reports that the replicator is making the cocoa too bitter. And as you can see I haven’t located the problem. But if I continue working on it I’ll lose my girlish figure not to mention fall behind on the half dozen other stuff I continuously need to get done. So I leave this project to you.” Chief McCall turned heel and half ran out of Ten-Forward. Replicators are relatively easy equipment. John considered the problem. Surely a senior chief engineer would have no problem working on its circuitry. Which would imply that the problem isn’t in the wiring at all but the programming. John pulled up the program for hot cocoa. It was a recipe made from a Lt. Hemlos. The entire recipe requried lots of whip cream and marshmellows which would add a lot of sugar and to counterbalance this the cocoa itself had relatively no sugar. Which is the problem. Cocoa is bitter but people don’t realize this. John thought as he began inserting a new recipe program. Probably because they had nicer dad’s than me and were never tricked into the “try it’s chocolate” thing. John moved Lt. Hemlos’ recipe into a separate file making a note for whoever ordered Hot Cocoa that the computer now used a new recipe as the standard and the old recipe could be accessed under Hemlos’ Cocoa.

“Cocoa Hot.” John told the replicator.
=/\\=Please be advised that a new recipe has been configured for the norm the old recipe is under Hemlos Cocoa.=/\\= The Computer advised John as he knew it would. Someone’ll have to turn the notification off after a week or so. John took the cup of Cocoa and took a sip. Ugh why’d it have to be Cocoa? I hate chocolate. John had hated chocolate ever since he had been a child and his father had replicated some Hershey’s cooking chocolate for a cake he was cooking. His dad had told John to try it insisting that it was chocolate. Not that he lied to me John thought Technically it was chocolate just unsweetened chocolate. This however isn‘t really too bad. John had to admit too himself. And with two tablespoons of sugar and a sweetened chocolate it shouldn’t be. John finished his cup and headed to engineering. Maybe now I’ll be able to look at the tweaks they’ve made to the Warp Drive. John thought happily.

Subject: King Soloman rules the western so King Sarius rules the eastern ya?

"My young master, it is my honor to convey you to the Royal Isle for nothing. Bizness of the King and Queen makes it on my pleasure." The old ferryman did a double take at the seal. I suspected as much. Kilton thought to himself.

"Thank you." Kilton said politely as he handed over his pack. Kilton eyed the rickety boat and the water it floated on with a sense of mistrust. It wasn't that Kilton was afraid of water or that he couldn't swim; just that he couldn't swim well and this water had an odor to it that for some reason Kilton didn't trust. Oh well guess it can't be helped. Kilton sighed as he carefully climbed into the boat. Kilton looks around the boat and to his paranoid dismay realizes he's the only fool desperate enough to take his voyage.

"'Bizness' is slow during the autumn and winter, especially o the north shore." The old man offers seeing Kilton's dismay. The idea that the old man would take this voyage without compensation and the fact that a man as old as he probably had a family twinged at Kilton. It can't be helped. Kilton thought, I don't have a lot of money on me. It's not like I made money as a student even with my 'business.'

"Ole King Sarrius is why I even have a living at all. Weren't it not fer 'im, I'd prob'ly be dead. E's a great man, that one. You an' 'im kin?" The old ferryman keeps his head bowed but peers at you sideways, obviously confused between his reverence for his adopted king and his fear of wizards. His nervousness shows through by his idle chatter.

"No, I have no kin." Kilton answered the ferryman using the idle chatter to organize his thoughts and prepare himself for the next step into the unknown dance it seemed he was now a part of. "It seems that the King is in need of my services and so I answer his summons." Kilton settled against his belongings on the boat slightly nervous and uneasy himself.

USS Discovery- Deck 36

Ensign Warwick rang the chime again. Still no answer.

"Computer locate Chief Engineer." John said.

=/\\= Chief Engineer Kennedy is on deck 25.=/\\=
John sighed and hurried to the turbo lift. Now I might be late.

"Deck 25" John ordered the lift. The ride was again short. John paused a moment before stepping out to regather his thoughts then strode into the corridor. "Computer locate where on deck 25 the chief Engineer is."
=//\=Chief Engineer Kennedy is currently in the armory.=/\\=
"Thank you." John walked into the armory. There were several gold uniforms tending to the torpedoes. John assumed some were security and others were engineers. One particularly cute gold uniform with Lt. commander pips was bopping to some tune only she could hear. Since she's the only Lt. Cmmdr. in the room I'm gonna assume thats Lt. Cmmdr. Kennedy John thought to himself as a smile crept along his face. He quickly squashed the smile. No reason to seem unprofessional on my first day.

“Ensign Warwick reporting for duty sir.” John said as he came to Starfleet’s version of attention.

The Commander looked up stared for a moment then blinked. She rose deliberately as if she had a back problem, or was clumsy and didn't want to fall on first impression. John held the attention the whole time only watching her out of the corner of his eye.

“As you were Ensign.” She put her hands on the torpedo and looked over the surface at Warwick. “Well then, have you gotten settled yet?”

"Yes sir, I have." John replied as he relaxed a little.

“Good. I assume that since you are reporting for duty that means your rested and ready to actually do some work?” The Cmmdr.'s tone made John wonder if there were people who wouldn't be ready to work when reporting, and told him that if there were he better not be one of them.

"Of course sir." John replied.

“Alright. Well let’s get a few things straight first. Everything that happens to this ship is our business. I’m not here to babysit you. I expect my team to know their jobs and to do them well the first time. If something isn’t done right it puts the rest of the crew in danger. That being said, if you don’t know what you are doing, ask. Ignorance is not an excuse for poor performance. I won’t chew you out for asking, I’ll chew you out for messing something up when you didn’t ask. You do your job and we won’t have any problems. Got it?” The Commander went through her speal.

"Aye sir." John said.

“I hear your main focus is warp drives. Currently however we are in dock so there isn’t much use for them. You know anything about these?” She runs her hand almost in a caress down the case of the torpedo.

"Just what they taught at the academy, sir. But I'm sure I can learn more." John said looking at the torpedo.

“Alright, well first thing I’d like you to do is come up with a quick briefing about them for Engineering and Tactical. Nothing lengthy or too technical, just the nuts and bolts about how they work and what we are going to benefit from these babies. After that…” She grins brightly, “there is something I’ll need you to look into. How are your taste buds?” Without waiting for his confused response she moves on, “There seems to be an issue with the replicator. See Yeoman MeCall for more information, and anything else you need.”

"I haven't heard anyone complain about them." John replied trying to keep a straight face. "No sir, I need nothing else."

“If there is nothing else… you’re dismissed.” The Chief Engineer returned to her work. John spun around to find a terminal where he could look up info on the torpedoes for his first briefing aboard the Discovery. The best place John thought to find a terminal would be in engineering so that's where he headed.

The specs on the new torpedoes were impressive. With 16 preset levels of adjustable yield a photon torpedo could either damage a ship or vaporize one. As each launcher could shoot a spread of ten torpedoes the Discovery had enough firepower to destroy a planet. Or with the shield capability deal some heavy damage to a sun. And the truly incredible thing was if tactical could set the torpedo to match the frequency of an enemy ship the torpedo would penetrate the shield as if it wasn't there. The downside to all this power though was the torpedo was almost exclusively a long range weapon. with a range of 3,000,000 Kilometers the longer the range the better, as if detonated right next to the ship it had a very real probability of destroying the Discovery along with the intended target.

Subject: I plaigarized some of this

“A letter has arrived for you young Kilton.” The voice of Archmage Irtrill, Kilton’s foremost master, rings out over the wind. Kilton looks up from his scroll a most vexing spell. He lays the spell to the side and rises. Grabbing his staff Kilton makes his way to the Archmage’s study. The Blue Tower as its called isn’t so much a single tower but more like a demi plane shifting to accommodate the current Head Archmage. Which wasn’t surprising considering the two facts about its creation. One it was built by magic and not hand, and two it was built for mages. Archmage Irtrill lived and studied in a room on the top floor of the tower and Kilton being a seventh year student studied on the third floor. Which meant that the journey to Irtrill’s study was taxing, but Kilton had made it every day for many years and so he didn’t notice the burn in his legs when he finally made it to his destination.
“Welcome young Kilton,” Irtrill invited his favorite student in. “Here is your message.” The Archmage handed Kilton an envelope sealed with the royal seal of Brocitas. Kilton’s eyes widened as he recognized the seal. He carefully opened the envelope and pulled the letter free.

Kilton Oprium by order of the queen of Brocitas you are to report to Her Majesty Immediately.
Signed Queen Brocitas.

Kilton looked at his master.
“That sounds urgent young Kilton.” Archmage Irtrill said as he smiled.
“It does indeed and as such I regret to inform you of my parting.” Kilton said as he spun to head back to his room. “I wish you health Archmage.”
“And I you young Kilton” The Archmage said turning back to her scroll. “Safe journeys.”
“Thank you Archmage.” Kilton rushed to his room gathered up his few belongings and left the tower. It would take him four days of travel to arrive at the palace. Four days he was not looking forward to after all this would be his first time away from the Tower since his arrival. And it had to be winter. Kilton thought I hate Winter. He huddled his robes close to himself and started on the trudge wondering what could be so urgent as to summon a wizard from the Blue Tower in the middle of winter (it wasn’t really the middle of winter, but when you’re cold it seems like it and you don’t care.) And wondering why summon him. Kilton was only a journeyman at best there were surely better options available.

Kilton had finally made it to the north shore of the Myrdell River. A stench death and just downright stinky assailed Kilon’s finely tuned and not often offended nostrils making him want to puke. The ferry man is old but strong as though he’d worked in the sun most of his life.

"Crossing over to the city, young master?" His gravelly voice is thick with the Western Kingdom accent. His wool cloak is moth eaten in places, revealing more layers beneath.

“I am” Kilton replies looking questioning at the craft the ferry man offered. It too looked like it had worked in he sun for most of its life.

"The ferry is usually three copper, young master, but you my lord, you are surely from the Tower. For you its only one, master. S'good bizness to keep relations with the Blue." He tries to smile ingratiatingly with his sparse nubs of teeth, but his fear of magic is evident.

“And how much is it for someone on the Queen’s business?” Kilton asked showing the letter with the royal seal.

Stardate: 2368.04.10 Starbase-Ensign Warwick's temporary quarters-0500

Yay! New ship! New ship! Ensign John Warwick sang to himself as he flew out of bed. He put on his nicely pressed uniform that he laid out the night before then realized he hadn't showered. After the shower he reapplied the uniform combed his hair straight back then parted it and combed the front part forward to give himself some bangs. Then grabbing his bags Ensign Warwick left his temporary quarters hopefully for a long time with his thoughts on the Galaxy class warp drive. John made his way to the transporter room 3 (or as he liked to think of it the teleporter room.)

“One to beam up to USS Discovery.” John said as he entered the room displaying complete calm even though inside he was tapping a jig.

“Aye sir.” The Transporter chief replied and began to type in the instructions. “They’re ready for you.”

“Thank you.” John hopped onto a pad. “Engage.” Despite John’s love of technology the transporter was one he never really got used to. It made him feel like ants were crawling on him. Still it beat shuttlecraft in overall efficiency, so he used it. Aboard the Discovery John looked around like a new born baby. The Galaxy class ship had space John couldn’t deny that. With a nod to the Discovery’s transporter chief Ensign Warwick hopped off the transporter pad strolled into the corridor and started whistling Beautiful Love. According to the specs John had read on the Galaxy class the engineering was on deck 36.
But maybe I should set my stuff in my room first. John thought as he realized where he was going. Let’s see the crew quarters are on deck…I don’t remember.

“Computer where are crew quarters?” John queried aloud.

=/\\=Crew quarters are on decks 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11...=/\\=

“Uhh.. Thank you computer.” John blinked. That many huh
“Computer where is Ensign John Warwick’s quarters?”

=/\\=Ensign John Warwick is assigned crew quarters on deck 3 room 3=/\\=

“Thank you again computer” John sighed and walked to the turbo lift. Upon reaching the turbo lift John found an out of order sign taped to the lift’s door. Not very promising
John spun around and headed for the another turbo lift. This one was operational.

“Deck 3” The turbo lift began moving, though the only indication of this was the pulsing light, he ride was smooth. Walking out onto deck 3 John found his room quickly as it was right in front of him. He walked in and looked around. It seemed his roommate hadn’t arrived yet so he had the option of choosing which side was his. He chose the right side by slinging his bags onto the bed.

“Computer what time is it?” John queried.

=/\\=The time is 0700=/\\=
0700 huh I have an hour before shift starts. Might as well check in so I can start working on that hour. John took one last look at his new domain and stalked out.

“Deck 36” He told the turbo lift. This time the ride was short.
Deck 36 was a marvel to Ensign John Warwick. Though you couldn’t see the warp core from the turbo lift you could hear it. The entire deck was engineering and John loved engineering. He managed to resist pirouetting and instead with a calm exterior (and dancing interior) Ensign Warwick strode purposefully o the chief engineer’s officer and rang the chime.

OOC…Assuming she invites me to enter

“Ensign Warwick reporting for duty sir.” John said as he came to Starfleet’s version of attention.
