Hosting a Game Night

So the time has come for a few friends to come over for the evening and embark on some gaming, whether that consists of a full out tabletop campaign or maybe just a few hands of Munchkin. Being properly prepared for your guests will help ensure that the evening goes smoothly.

1. Make sure everyone is clear about when and where to meet. Having a guest show up late because they misunderstood what time things began, or worse yet they got lost can be a very bad start to a good night.

2. Get some snacks. This can be as simple or complicated as you feel you want to undertake. Bake up some brownies or buy some M&M’s at the store. Having at least one salty and one sweet option is always good. Asking guests to also bring their own contribution is usually acceptable means of getting snacks to your home as well. Provide a few small plates and/or napkins is also recommended.

3. Get some drinks. Again figure out what level you want to go here. Iced tea, soda, or even liquor (if the guests are old enough of course) are all good options. Clean cups need to be part of this equation, whether they are disposable or not is up to you.

4. Provide a space. Figure out where the gaming is going to take place. Make sure there is enough seating, lighting and space to accomplish the night’s activity. Dining tables are probably ideal of course, but other options are available. I have played D&D on a pool table before, and scattered around the living room with a small map resting on the coffee table. Try to tidy the space up before guests arrive so they will feel more comfortable.

5. Get gaming needs together. If the game night is based on board games get those out, if the night is based on RPG get out the core books. Check on dice, pens, pencils, scratch paper, figurines, maps, and extension cords for laptops.

6. Have a great time! With everything prepared and everyone gathered make some cheesy puns and have fun vanquishing some goblins together!

Whenever I'm invited to a game night or organise one at someone else's place, I bring along a huge pot of chili con carne, wraps, cheese and lettuce. It doesn't have to be served piping hot, so it can wait a bit for the game to be underway. It's also the sort of thing that can be prepared well in advance.

Needless to say, I think my players and GMs love me :)

I always bring a veggi tray with dip, so that way something healthy is munchable beside a lot of candy and chips.
