OK, OK, I give. How can I create italics on this site? How do I get an avatar loaded? (Was working on trying to figure this out until that Doogan stold my internet weapon and took it to some other world.)

and little gnome friend Fandil The Wise had their weapons out (for Sentinel The Small that was a SHORT sword) as the carefully went down the stair. Sentinel, stayed inches behind Oriel as the group would initially depend on Oriel's nose that knows. Sentinel kept his eyes open, looking for traps, locks, hidden doors and used his weapon to move rubbish and old food on the floor. He and Fandil intended to check every inch of the basement, up/down/under/through before this was all done, and to help the big guys carry back anything of value. If danger or action came, they both would duck/dive low and find defense, but help any friend aggressively in need. This might be intense, but it was also going to be exciting!

Subject: In the Inn

"Whoa!" Sentinel The Small says to everyone, as he hears Oriel say he smells swamp. Sentinel The Small hates swamps (being a mountain type) and hates Lizardmen even more. "Whoa".

"Here's the plan. Oriel, with that great nose of yours, and with my trap/secret door skills, we'll cautiously lead the search of this basement. It's good that the stairs are still formidable and can hold any of us. Deathstalker, take a quick look out that back door, and let us know if anything is off-kilter. Then let us light your lantern so we will have two lights down there. I'd like you to stay at the head of the stairs where you can observe anything that might sneak up on us. You got our backs! If we yell, come on down and pitch in with your big weapon. Here's the order - Oriel with his sniffer and Deathstalker's lantern plus a weapon, closely followed by me with my weapon out, and then Gunther with that shield and a weapon, Katai can take the lit torch from Gunther and be ready to cast or use a weapon, and Fandil, you take up last place, but you need to crawl down low like me when we get down there to search. Let's go."
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The group will head into the basement after the quick check out the back door, lighting the lantern to go with the torch, and using Deathstalker to secure our backs. They will descend in order, with the first order of direction to come from Oriel's nose for unusual smells (other than the rot) and the interpretations of it. In the basement, if they encounter action, they will protect themselves aggressively, yelling for Deathstalker to come down. We will search everything in the basement, including looking at the floor for footprints or guidance. The thief will check all for traps and will look hard for hidden doors, especially when opening the alleged pantry doors. "Good" food/drink/valuables, if any, will be secured and later loaded on the cart. The overall intent is in this order:
1. Looking for clues/info, particularly Oriel's "smell lead"
2. Protecting themselves
3. Finding any special paths/doors/tunnels, etc, and then decicing what to do.
4. No item, furniture, shelf, pantry, table, wall, floor will be passed over.

says - let's gather the six together and search the basement - but leaving one on guard at the head of the steps, I will search for traps and hidden doors .... and the great "sniffer" can follow the smell .....nothing was said about what it looked like when the Katai group looked out the back door upstairs, so, I would re-add that - shall I continue to take the "lead" until we exit this dump? Others .......?

Subject: at the ransacked inn Sentinel The Small says

“Didja guys see those people we went by?” Sentinel The Small asked as he held his hands out to keep anyone from hustling helter-skelter into the ransacked, dilapidated building that was once an inn. “Lots of ‘em looked stoned to me! Drugs? Charmed? Spells? Zombies? Whaddaya guys think?” He didn’t wait for answers as he quickly went on. “Hey, whaddaya say we be really careful here in this big ole shack? I mean, lookee there! Broken windows, blood soaked all over, everything outta whack, glass all over the floor! Woowee! I’m thinking we do this. First look everywhere, including at the dust, before we move or disturb anything. Gotta be clues visible. I’ll take a quick round to check for traps, but I don’t see anything obvious yet. Everyone, be careful, cautious, and on the look out. Weapons ready – it looks abandoned, but is it?! Garrus, why don’t you and Fandil and Katai check out all the upper floor, overturned furniture, blood, anything up here. Maybe glance out the back door, just in case, too. Me’n Gunther and Oriel’ll mosey on over and carefully check out the stairs and the basement down there. Oriel, maybe you and your bow can keep a watch over all of us, with particular emphasis on the stairs and that dark basement. Let’s find out all we can, and who knows, maybe there is treasure here? Yell for me if anyone needs a trap check or a lock opened.”

When they begin examining the steps, and Sentinel has the safety rope on himself, he says to Gunther, “ Hey, Big Holy Guy, pray for safety, OK? And by all means, if I yell, grab that rope and pull me back up to safety!”
____________________________________________________________
Sentinel The Small sort of takes a leadership/coordination role on the search in the dilapidated and disarrayed Inn due to his thieving skills. The group, being careful of all the broken glass and the wet spots from the rain, splits up somewhat, although all in reasonably close contact, as three search everything in the 80x60 room, including dust, floors, furniture, windows, blood, rear door, etc. The other group carefully initiates examination of the tricky rotting steps and basement. The lighter warriors (e.g. Sentinel) will test things first, with a safety rope tied around his body. The basement group intends to light a torch (Guthher’s) for examination and entry to the basement. The stairs will be tested and Sentinel’s ropes will be used as necessary to descend or to protect people as they descend. If entry is acquired, Oriel will continue to keep watch on all, and the basement will be searched in detail by hopefully both Gunther and Sentinel. No stone will be left unturned. If there is action/fight, the group, collectively and individually, will choose courses of actions that protect all first, and victory second.

Subject: Sentinel will take a Small lead

If deemed appropriate, Sentinel is willing to lead at the moment. (Which really means post.)
He would set the following actions......
set three (Garrus, Katai, Fandil) to examine the room - blood, damage, clues, other door, other rooms, etc
take three - Sentinel, Gunther, Oriel to examine stairs and prelim basement look, would post Oriel with the bow mostly intent on Gunther/Sentinel stair work, but also for all in general - would light Gunther torch and have him hold it as far into steps as possible - first looking for clues, etc, then tieing rope on Sentinel for Gunther support in case stairs break and gentle down with Gunther holding rope and torch

ok???????????????????

Great idea, Paladin.

Have tinder, fire start expertise, but no torches. (dummy!)

Have pretty good overall thief - lockpick, traps, etc skills

Slowly, carefully, let's inch forward and explore the basement. (I, for one, think there will be nothing there!)
HOWEVER, we must beware the rotting stairs, I have ropes, etc, and try lesser weights first. Perhaps our gnomey illusionist can cast an illusion down there first?

Let's also check out what is out the back door - maybe first.

Clearly, I am getting the feel of zombie-type beings. You think?

Subject: Proposal Accepted

Sentinel The Small is feeling tall as Deathstalker quietly addresses him and proposes a stealthy night excursion. Hey, the Big Guy even lets Sentinel address him as Garrus! It is great to have a new, big friend!

But make no bones about it, Sentinel recognizes the seriousness and potential of the night excursion, and the value a small, quick thief can bring to the event. he puts on his "this-is-important" cap and says, "Count me in, Garrus. Let's do it tonight!"

Meanwhile, Sentinel goes back to being alert for signs of anything important as the group sashays down the village streets. Again, he carefully watches and uses his lipreading talents wherever possible. He is prepared to scramble down and under or up and over (including buildings) at the drop of a hat or sign of danger.

Sentinel The Small thinks to himself as the group leaves the Mayor's fine place .......

"Gee, we sure learned a lot there. The Mayor seemed like a decent human, er, a, at least, he looked human. The guy sure is rich, though. But he did not seem completely forthcoming - matbe 80%, but ... Oh, for a nice hot meal! My stomach is rumbling. Don't these other guys have their six meals a day? Ah, well, it IS an adventure, and maybe soon we will all be wealthy and can eat twelve meals a day! Cooooool! That Oriel is a pretty good talker, and ole Gunther sure is a religious feller. Wouldn't want to cross his faith! Nice having the big guy, Deathstalker around. Makes one feel safe. And a magic user or TWO?! Yeah! This IS an adventure! Looks like we will explore the old inn. Need to get ready to rumble as they will surely need my lockpicking and trap examination skills soon. Yep. Time to show my worth. I wonder if I can steal that apple from Fandil's bag without him knowing it?"

"Hey, Fandil The Wise, did you hear the joke about ......."

Sting and another with him check out the boy on the way

enjoy, eat, ask, plan at the inn

at night Sentinel, a fine little thief, will gladly go to the home of the people who leave - as long as one big guy (Deathstalker) goes too - reconnoiter, thief goes in and carefully tosses/steals/gets clues - big guy watches out

next day a group encounter

curteously, sort of, responds to gunther the holy and impatient with a "yes".

and now has the following thoughts .....
1. it is 4 pm; this furfoot is HUNGRY!
2. it is getting later in the day, having sat and gabbed all day, and this halfling needs to consider room and rest
3. it is getting too late to take on anything large and dangerous (especially after dark) since we still do not know what is safe and what is precarious (and HOW dangerous)
4. the thought of both little guys is to go to the inn and match up with the rest of the adventurers, if we can find them, for food, drink, and the evening; would rather bunk at the same place due to safety in numbers, as we KNOW something ain't right here in river city
5. the thought for tomorrow - early after a big breakfast and some real coffee - say "hi"/investigate the hermit or the storekeeper, or the smith or the carpenter or the temple.
6. our preference would be to see the smaller/lesser potential enemies first - let's tread carefully; the BIG enemies and support are probably the hermit as alleged leader, and the temple/clerics; hence, the smith, storekeeper, carpenter are probable firsts on our list.
7. after we all meet and agree, we suggest either splitting again and talking to/surprising two of the three lesser "enemies" or ALL go to either of the hermit/clerics.
8. the little guys, after offering these ideas are likely to go along with what the group says, and since they think that Deathstalker is one big, mean SOB, are likely to put more emphasis on what he says in a deadlock.
9. sometime Sentinel intends to go after that bum Doogan, no matter where he is, and get that fine internet weapon back!

Subject: Sentinel The Small and Fandil The Wise

(one of these days Fandil's boss will have his issues resolved and post for himself rather than through sideline conversations, but .......)

The little guys are listening and observing intently as Oriel talks for the group with the Mayor et al. They watch Gunther closely for any signs that action might be required. Both are smiling and looking like inocuous and secondary members of a group. They can and will act quickly if necessary.

Sentinel does warily "look around" as the conversation occurs. He looks for other conversations through any open doors or windows;he can, after all, read lips pretty well. He also casually but visually only examines any drawers or containers to prepare for thievery or lockpicking were he to so choose. (Probably later on.) He is prepared for anything. But he remains quiet, unless specifically addressed, in which case he will answer truthfully and generically supporting anything anyone else in the group has said.

He notes Fandil being quiet, smiling, and very alert.

Subject: Sentinel The Small brainstorms

Hey, thanks for the comment about the "backpack internet" causing you to chuckle. (We try!) The comment about your questioning wife ......... ours has for 37 years (in July) always questioned our intellect (WT) as it relates to gaming. (and probably a whole lot more) Questioning is ok, but when she wacks us up the side of the head with her warhammer, or pokes us in the gonads with her epee, we either perk up and listen or RUN.

Having spoken to our friend the ugly gnome (in case he does not post himself at the moment) we agree:

Gunther - use the discern evil

Oriel, talk for us.

The little guys and presumably the big guy (Deathstalker) will listen, be alert for any uncertainties, and add to the beautiful ambience of the moment.

Some additional thoughts at questions :
... Our group has mixed companionship (races, sizes, appearances, etc) and how will the good people of this city act about that? Discriminate?
... In this lovely village, how did the Mayor "earn" his job, and, more importantly, how did he get so rich? We want to follow in his footsteps!
... What would the mayor recommend that we (the adventurers, some of whom might like to settle down) do to "get rich", "find property", "help out with the mysterious going-ons", etc.
... What is the "real danger" in this place?
... Are the temple-dwellers holy, or evil?

Darn! (Sentinel just looked in his backpack and saw that his internet weapon is gone and he is sure that Doogan absconded it as he exited this adventure!)

Subject: Sentinel The Small learns to crawl

A dungeon crawl is a type of role-playing adventure in which heroes negotiate a labyrinthine environment, battling various monsters and looting any treasure they may find. Because of its simplicity, a dungeon crawl can be easier for a gamemaster to run than more complex adventures, and the "hack and slash" style of play is appreciated by players who focus on action and combat. The term can be used in a pejorative sense, since dungeon crawls often lack meaningful plot or logical consistency. For example, the parody game Munchkin is about "the essence of the dungeon experience… Kill the monsters, steal the treasure, stab your buddy."[1]

A dungeon crawler (or dungeon bash) is a specific title that focuses on contained areas where the player proceeds through a dungeon collecting treasure, usually culminating in a boss battle. The enemies and items (and sometimes boss) normally reappear after exiting and re-entering a major section. There may be only a token plot involved, in order to allow focus on extensive combat, skill, item creation, and loot drop mechanics. Luck is usually heavily involved, controlling which monsters may spawn in the area or the treasure they carry. Low percentage rates for powerful items encourage the player to repeatedly clear the dungeon in order to obtain them.

Daggon it, that internet is a slick weapon to have in the backpack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He understands the need for patience in this format.
He has no idea what a "dungeon crawl" is.
He is enjoying this adventure.
He knows action is ahead.
He appreciates Trip doing this.
He has no problems if there are "drops" and fewer involved.

A salute to all who truly want to play/go on, and a hearty "good luck" to those who chose not to do so.
