Agreed. Be honest - sorta.
Perhaps say some adventurers and some wanting to settle down and we heard of the issues in this city and the possibility of free land. Let's ask directly and specifically. FIRST - who is the mayor; that is whom we want to talk to.

Perhaps Oriel should talk as the aladin has been chastised for his methods?

And let's not get in a hurry, Hammer. There are 4 of us in this small group and 13 on the whole adventure together. Let's take all the time we need to do it well and full of fun.

Both us "small guys" will listen alertly, be aware of surroundings, etc. We will follow, for the moment. Sentinel reads lips, so he will also use that talent where he can.

Subject: The door opens

Sentinel The Small, ever alert but quiet, keeps his eyes open as the human inside opens the door at the Mayor home. He hears the person ask "how can I help you and you look rather armed for farmers". Sentinel is trying to discern if anyone else is in the room and listens for other noises inside. He is prepared to act immediately if necessary, and if there is an all out assault on the group, he will duck under the cart for protection unless the threat is at the door itself. He does not draw his weapons, but he knows he is very quick at doing so if necessary.

Talking to his friend Fandil, Sentinel believes that we (Gunther) needs to tell the Mayor that we are looking for land, and are armed because of the many rumors about missing people in this area. We were forewarned by the farmer (and others) about missing people. We coulkd ask about lands available due to people missing and lead right in to all the questions about the aura of this town. meanwhile all should be leary and ready for any surprise.

We also may jingle some money at the Mayor.

Gunther can knock if he wants, but Sentinel is going in with him if he goes in. Sentinel has no intention to wait by the cart. Hammer, please do not direct what we are going to do. Neither Fandil nor I like it when you say they will stay in the cart. You do not know if we will or not. (But we will let you know.) Someone is going in with you. Since all three of us know that you did not tell the whole group all the info you were given by the farmer, we KNOW we will want to hear this for ourselves.

Plus, there is value to several people hearing the same words and observing the actions.

Agree to being in the wagon. So does Fandil - sometimes we will "post" for each other.

No problem with the "Hammer" exhuberance! All is well.

Darque, congrats, man! Now THAT is an adventure and a wonderful one. Salute.

The halfling thought it was pretty cool riding on the cart mostly hidden and keeping his eye on things. He made it a point to not only look out, but up. He and Fandil The Wise chatted occassionally, and told jokes about the stupidity and cumbersomeness of the "big people". Both were ever ready for action, and despite their discriminatory feelings would quickly defend their adventure companions if needed.

After reporting back to the group, the halfling shoulders his backpack and decides to climb a nearby tree while "waiting it out" until they moved forward as a group. He thought maybe he could see something more from a loftier perch. He was ready at a moment's notice to part with his small group and head towards the mayor. He decided, once again, that when they addressed the mayor he would listen more than speak, and be ever observant. He would follow the humans lead, but ever ready to react quickly as needed.

OK - Oriel, Sentinel, and Fandil will head off to in the tracks of Deathstalker. (I think Fandil agreed - off site.) Perhaps will will ask whomever he last talked to to accompany us as he did probably provide that person some of his anticipated whereabouts.

the more i think about it, the more i believe visiting the alleged temple makes sense for someone, and i would think hammer the holy would want to do that rather than the mayor - it seems more in character

we little guys are somewhat worried that the group allowed deathstalker to go off on his own - he may be a mean looking character, but he should not have travelled alone, so having heard that he did, sentinel is considering grabbing him friend the gnome and seeing if another big guy - like our ranger friend - would go with us to find Deathstalker

suggests that maybe we split into to groups and try the separatele inns

it will provide double the info, and the two groups are large enough to provide decent protection

we could set a meeting time to get back together

Hey, big holy guy! Where'd you get all those dents in your shield? Oh? Silver? Well, I've heard it is pretty soft and malleable. I like the shiny yellow stuff in the middle.

Oops - so much for my suggestion to those who are not in the room.

Subject: Sentinel The Small in the house

Sentinel watches and listens carefully before and after he enters the house. He greets the farmer when introduced, and accepts his hositality, but watching and chcking everything closely. He thought he heard other noises, and asked, "Where are the children; I just love playing with kids. They are more my size." Sentinel watches everyone in the room, whenever they enter, and keeps an eye on all doors. He tries to read lips whenever those in the house whisper to each other. Sometime during the conversations, if Gunther does not ask, he quizzes about "the best place to have fun in town after dark". He is very friendly and near child-like, but remains internally very very alert and wary.

Into the house, of course. Since Gunther discerned no evil intent - why not? Ask all the questions - including the reserve of the women espepcially. I suggest one of us not eat/drink, just in case. Perhaps the ranger? Sentinel will as he has some poison resistance. But we all watch warily, and ask many questions. We should even ask them to show us his home and farm buildings because we are all so interested in his well-run farm.

I suggest that another group of 2 to 4 edge up nearer to the house, just in case. Why not have backus nearer by?

Subject: Sentinel The Small

Sentinel understood fully why he was chosen for this first task to approach the wary human farmer/townsman. He was plain, common, and short. (weren’t all halflings?) He was certainly one of the most innocuous individuals the group could enlist. He was proud that he often simply went unnoticed. But, he had other assets, he knew the group might need for this challenge. He was amazingly strong for his size, very quick, skilled in lock and pocket picking, and he could read lips. If he had to, he could be pretty darned dangerous with both his sling and shortsword! Of course, he knew he would not be planning to attempt any stealth with the very wary human. The group needed information and could chance no surprises with this local.

Sentinel clearly understood Gunther’s role as the talker in the group. Everyone trusted a holy paladin didn’t they. And this paladin just plain had a good aura about him. Sentinel liked the guy, and maybe some of that holy stuff would rub off on Sentinel The Small providing some good luck! Yes.

The ranger seemed OK, too. A pretty knowledgeable sort, and that would bode well in the discussion. Besides, another human might just ease any unwariness that an untrusting human had. The gnome in skirts (Sentinel just had to laugh at the illusionist’s response to the robe/skirt jab. Fuuuuuunny!) would prove valuable, especially if an illusion was necessary to enhance the wary farmer’s countenance. Plus, this gnome seemed quite experienced at this adventuring stuff. Besides, it looked like the gnome was the closest thing to a friend Fandil had made in this serious group.

Sentinel opened his powers of observing and hearing as they moved forward. He hoped he would get close enough to see someone talking in the windows and read their lips. He stayed slightly behind the others, however, as the humans needed to be presented first. His shortsword was sheathed, and his sling dangled to his rear, but he could have either out and in use in a flash. If someone attacked, he knew he would dive low for protection and go for the legs. If necessary, Sentinel thought he could have his rope and hooks out and he could be on top of that building or the barn in seconds. He could climb!

The rest of the group was resting out of sight, waiting for the information this small team could provide. Sentinel meant to do everything possible to make this a success, even if it meant bribing the farmer with gold coins. (Gunther’s, of course.)

to what was offered........

Chatting with a farmer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If there are gaps in what Hammer posts, I might be able to fill in gaps if I am in the group approaching the farmer - or our halfling partner as well.

I think we need to tell/ask:

1. An expression of concern and support
2. A general question about the temple and town - just an iced breaker - and confirmation on what things were like in the "good old days"
3. Specific follow up questions about:
*the temple
*most recent disappearancs
*When it all began
*Those who were gone and returned
*Their best guess
*A general - "What are people afraid of?"
*People are hiding at the sight of strangers - they are on a road with travelers - a road that would normally have guards for those travellers (Path through the forest) - why are they afraid of outsiders?
4. A simple, "Wat can we do?"

Food for thought anyway....

How sure are we that the temple is filled with good folks? do we know much about this deity?

Posted on 2008-03-20 at 17:28:03.

I might add .............................
...yet the fields and food are so prosperous through all this; how do you make that happen?
... why, particularly have the females avoided visitors and run inside?
... how can we help?
... where is the best/safest place to get food, drink, and rest?
... who is in charge in the town? - both formally and informally
... realizing something is amiss, is the town safe to strangers?
..... offer some goild coins for information and a willingmess to help

Sentinel The Small was not happy. "What is this godforsaken weather", he thought. "I hate it when my leather gets wet; kinda shrinks up on me. Oh, well - that's another reason for an adventure. A little exercise would drop a few pounds, and even a tight leather would fit well." He stepped up to the table, behind some fancy-dancy elf, to accept his bag of coins from Balarok. Being a halfling meant that he barely could reach over the table, but he WAS quick. He grabbed the jingling bag and stepped lightly over to a lone chair to count the coins and to watch who else he might be adventuring with. he hoped that at least a couple of those "big guys" would be in the party plus somebody or somebodies who could heal. He knew his contribution was not going to be magic or might, but his lockpicking, pickpocketing and climbing skills were terrific. A good thief was hard to find, especially one who was a true neutral. He chuckled to himself as he thought what his father had said to him some years ago ..... "True Neutral - does that mean we steal from BOTH the rich and the poor?".
He smiled as he saw that really big and ugly guy sign up, but he was most intrigued by the only gnome in the room. He had never met a gnome before, so he siidled on over and introduced himself. "Well met, gnome; I am Sentinel The Small. What name is yours?"

"The adventure itself will be posted under the Rules-based RPG's under Dungeons and Dragons. The title is An Evil in Orlane!"

I do not understand - where does one find this? I cannot seem to locate it on site. Perhaps I do not understand?????

Is all that is required is a "prejourney" story like Hammer?
