Subject: Formation

Blackness swirled through Shepherd's consciousness. How much of his soul was left? He had given so much to the wolves. How much time was left, Shepherd struggled as if seekeng to pull himself out from underneath the waters of death and take a breath of life and suddenly he felt a hand reach down and pull him out.

His eyes opened to see the appearance of a young girl healing him. Shepherd could see the depth and age in her and knew her looks were deceptive to her power and her experience. He smiled at her gently, "Thank you." He said. The wolves had taken on an air of kindness and were nuzzling Zau and her patient. Bezmir was rapidly brought back to his vivacious nature and life was returned to the wounded bard.

This shouldn't have caused the destruction it did Shepherd sighed. Any other day he should've been able to cast off the threat alone, taking very little damaging and yet two lives had been risked... his own being one of them, and that meant a lot more lives. This meant more than Shepherd wanted to acknowledge.

The group congregated in a small circle with affectionate wolves joining them. Shepherd closed his eyes quickly and reached out to the souls of the wolves.

You are forgiven, now be cautious of welcoming darkness into the light of your soul. You are servants of goodness, protectors of love and warriors for peace now. Live your life like this and you will redeem that taint of evil you have left on these fields.

The message was accepted with joy and they grew more close and warm, cuddled with the four who had fought them together. They looked to each other with kindness and camaraderie now but a great and angry darkness lurked in the air, and something seemed to stain the spirit of the town. Shepherd turned to Bezmir as he asked about dinner. The other two seemed so surprised but Shepherd was not abject to the idea.

"Indeed you may not need to eat but a great task faces those of you who choose to join me. I am not a leader and it is not my quest but the journey and battle of life, one which we have all been called to. I will pass no judgment on those who deny this call but I will answer it and welcome company along this new path which faces me. In the mean time I think sitting down and talking could not hurt. I'm sure we all are bearing numerous questions on our backs seeking answers and I think it would be pertinent to seek these between each other before we look out to this world where shadows can hide in the light of day. Shall we eat?" Shepherd looked from eye to eye of the small group that had formed on the field. What was to come of this, Shepherd knew not but he was sure that there was a new goal which he had come up against, a new evil to conquer and this was greater than all he had previously scattered.

Shepherd looked to the town, he was not sure it was wise to eat there however. He sighed. THere was a storm growing in all corners of the earth and they had been found in its rageful origin. Perhaps they could not yet face any calm or peace however short-lived they had intended for it to be. It seemed darkness had other plans.

Jethro watched the wild interchange. Well, it seemed that everyone in the party was intent on doing whatever the hell they wanted. The gnome sat back on his donkey and watched the blood with a smile, it seemed more like entertainment, Jethro smiled slightly to himself, though he hid it whenever anyone looked his way. He eased his sling back onto his belt and climbed off his donkey when all the shouts had silenced and all the bodies had hit the ground.

"Well we will have to take the time to search the bodies, it would be folly to leave them as they are. I propose that we camp and make sure that we guard our sleep carefully now, we know not what hides in these woods waiting for night to fall, to creep into our camp and slit our throats. This seems to be a bad omen though. I propose that we set camp now. I can search the bodies while we set up if that would be helpful." Jethro smiled widely. This great trauma over the murder seemed silly to the gnome. Death was a part of nature, everyone was going to face that gruesome shadow and Jethro would make for damned sure that it would be a long time before he faced it, if that meant the death of these religious creeps, so be it. He wouldn't hesitate to kill the fools but he would've sucked them dry for all the information that they had about this 'quest'. Jethro shook his head slightly, but that would take intelligence... something not in abundance in this party. Jethro sighed and went to examine the other bodies.

I definitely think its important to question and further examine what's going on here, whether we do that through the cleric or through the half-elf doesn't matter to me, I kind of agree with Bez in that, the more people we have to question, the more accurate our information is perhaps we should tie them up. Also we should decide on questions and someone who should ask them, preferably someone with high charisma... wait, is that me?... just kidding, I don't think that's a job for Jethro necessarily, unless others elect him, he most likely won't elect himself unless the questions would benefit him specifically. We should also decide on tactics - intimidation, diplomacy, sense motive (if someone has this or even high wisdom it would be VERY helpful), what do you guys think?

Exactly I'm just wonderig how complicit they are in the overthrowing of the keep. Probably very little considering they wanted the map but perhaps they were trying to throw us off track. I don't know but its suspicious that they know... unless the Lords of Waterdeep released the information in hopes of our downfall. That also seems suspect considering they would then have to clear the keep of the bandits anyways. I don't know but I don't think that it's random that they asked for the map.

Subject: A Reckoning

Shepherd felt his soul grow and expand strengthen and expand giant sized within him, as the fields he had given himself to, gave their lives back. There was a great evil that he was facing. At the beginning of time, at Shepherd's creation he had been cursed with a constant battle. There was no single enemy that embodied evil, as Earth, Wind, Fire and Water had been embodied in their restless elementals that coursed constantly through the world silently and unseen by fast-moving, slow-thinking humans. As time, aging and death had been embodied in the lonely old man, Eternity, who had given birth to Shepherd who had birthed the fathers of all elementals to course through each other, make their love and create the world. Shepherd had travelled through the world beating down the shadows that ate away in the corners of men's minds, that festered and expanding as cobwebs conquering the kingdom's of mens hearts. Consuming and controlling them, leaving nothing but the hollow shells of men, this evil came in the form of pride and envy, ignorance and anger, boredom and depression, fear and greed. There was no embodiment of these merely the ever dominating evil of human ego, the self-centeredness that came with self-consciousness. But Shepherd knew that fighting with him were mercy and compassion, honesty and love and these were born with the soul that lived within all and this was his domain and now someone had robbed living beings of this gift. The gift of spirit. Shepherd finally rose, strangely and as if he used very little force but merely, willed himself to stand. This darkness that had drank the wolves dry of their soul would pay dearly for the sin. He had given this evil the chance to live, to leave peacefully, he would never give it that chance again.

Shepherd sought through the souls coursing across the fields, He was pleased with Zau's work she had indeed hindered the wolves, if not, perhaps Shepherd would now be dead. If he could avoid physical contact he was nearly invincible containing the life of the entire dead field. Their sacrifice would not be in vain Shepherd promised himself, also swearing he would make sure that life was blown black across these plains soon. He held each soul fixed in their spot and searched through the maze of spirit seeking out that evil. He saw it now cowering within the wolves beneath the might of Shepherd.

I have come to claim what is mine

There was no reply, merely a quivering a great terror of what was to come next within the shadow that haunted each hollow frame of wolf body. Shepherd drew himself to strike down the evil and cast out the blackness when he saw Bezmir. The bard wounded and struggling atop the wolf, striking out and desperate... protecting Shepherd. A tenderness rose and for a second the striking blow was slowed, Shepherd's soul halted its action, souls were freed from his freezing he had held them within. A second was all the dangerous evil needed, five wolves leapt upon Shepherd. The first pounced upon him, striking his vulnerable body to the ground and scratching from his neck to his chest. Two others lunged at his legs, one biting into his ankle, the other tearing at his thigh. Another bit at his ribs and the final one ripped a deep gash down his arm, clawing him.

Shepherd let out a desperate and violent bellow, with all the energy he had he held all souls captive again. His great spirit grew twice as high, passionate, angry and powerful.

No please!

The shadow screamed but Shepherd crushed it. Destroyed the evil that consumed the wolves. The empty frames, now lifeless hovered for a second, hollow. And within a final burst of energy, Shepherd blew a new life back into the helpless wolves. A goodness and a kindness, one they had not known before.

And with this final exertion Shepherd fell limp the wolves clambering off of him, confused and concerned they let out a mourning howl. Shepherd breathed ragged breaths, he had given much of his soul to return life to the wolves. That evil had been strong and Shepherd was sure it reigned somewhere else. This had been an attempt. A test of Shepherd and perhaps he had failed this, he would have doubtless if not for Bezmir, Zau... and someone else, a strange spirit that had also been a part of this battle.

Weakly Shepherd called out, something had to be done. This evil had to be hunted and conquered, "Zau... Bezmir..." This was his last hope there was something important about them. He needed to make it to Eternity before he could face the evil, if he could make it to his father... did he have the life left in him? Was this the last breath Shepherd drew? He could see Zau and Bezmir still alive, they still had soul, Shepherd couldn't be dead if they were still living, he knew that much was true. But still time was of the essence... could this evil be that legendary evil that Shepherd had heard so much about, rumors, prophecies, myths, scary stories and fairy tales... It was powerful and more evil than anything Shepherd had seen before, it cared for nothing but itself... but what was its origin. Shepherd's thoughts couldn't flow sequential as he lay there bleeding. Again he mumbled, "Bezmir... Zau..." Desperately moaning through his weakness. He cared not for himself but for all life and for their sake he couldn't die. It wasn't the minor wounds that plagued him but the depth of his soul that he had pressed into the wolves in the battle against that evil. Shepherd saw how young he must be compared to this evil... what could this evil be? Where could it have come from to be older than Shepherd was himself.

((ooc: Hey guys, I hope this isn't pushing the story too much, I wrote a lot more than I expected and if you guys don't like some of it I have no problem going back and editing, I made a lot of plot choices already, sorry about that. Loving this RP though, its really fun))

As Jethro I was already considering doing something of the sort (and perhaps killing him while he was running... ). But I had the same thought as you KoD I thought the group would look badly upon Jethro, obviously if he killed him but even if he stopped him and, being merely self-obsessed, not malicious it would be in bad interest to obtain unfavourable viewing within the party he's travelling with. I don't know, what do you guys think?

Okay, I'll go after the caster, I can sling him and, because of range, I won't get any attack bonus but its all luck and he can't have an AC much higher than 14-15 so I have an okay chance. Its that or cast another magic missile, what do you guys think. I can do that right Wyrmsting?

Subject: Let it Fly

Jethro watched as the cruel mockery of Gunk-Karg spill out of the evil leader's mouth. He was gauging the distance 100 feet or so? His sling would never make it that far. He was still reluctant to use his spells, perhaps he wouldn't have to but it was looking more and more unlikely.

With a scream of angry insanity, the barbaric madman off to the side had allowed his bloodlust to overtake any sense of tactic and had rushed the group of them. Jethro's head turned as member after member of their party went hurtling to meet this made man between the two. Jethro snuck a quick glance at the opposing group and saw some form of prayer commencing from the cleric who led them. This was bad news but no one was paying attention to the priest. And there were still the rest of them, all that was needed was three arrows to be knocked and that could equalize the numbers. This could happen in seconds. Their odds could plummet rapidly and Jethro wasn't about to stick himself in the middle of death. Running wasn't really an option at this point so he judged it quickly. For the sake of the Gods, he thought to himself, it seemed he too had few options beyond slinging his bullet at the barbarian... or beginning to indulge in magic-use. Perhaps it was a pertinent time to reveal his skills. Doing his best to access the situation he agreed with Ether on the point of ridding themselves of the Bane worshipping leader before moving on to the followers, who knew how committed they were, after all? Also Jethro knew enough to guess that a spell could come from him which could either put the priest's party at a serious advantage on the whole or somehow cripple their party. 100 feet, only one spell would reach that far and cause some serious distraction and harm to their leader. As long as whatever the hell he's casting isn't some form of magic resistance Jethro was okay. As far as that goes, no one in their party looked like a spell caster so he doubted the cleric would be using spells on that, especially when four of their members had rushed out to meet the charging warrior. Holding the sling in one hand, Jethro pulled something out of a pouch hanging off his belt. This might help in showing the party a gnome could do more than drink. The morningstar on his back always threw people off and he liked it that way. This would have a nice element of surprise for everybody. Jethro muttered some words, let it fly.

((ooc: I am casting magic missile on the cleric I don't think I'm outside of 110 feet. Also there's no movement involved so I should be able to maintain the holding of my loaded sling, if not he will put it down, or do whatever he can, as fast as he can to get the spell in. Let's see what happens! ))

I wonder if we're not focussing too much of our energy on the barbarian? Don't know, but what do you guys think?

I'm just a little worried about us getting sniped off, and the cleric and sorcerer (if that's what he is, perhaps druid or such but he has no weapons whatsoever) casting spells at us. Don't know, maybe I'm thinking about this wrong.

Cool thanks, got it back to you. For me it was just coincidence: time freed up today. . Looking forward to seeing how we are doing.

One small note we should elect a leader: a lot of us have high charisma and/or are eloquent but we should have only one speaker. More will reveal discord and weakness within the group. I suppose I'm planning outside of the game (not really allowed) these are merely side thoughts I always respect being true to a character and the situation over just doing what's the smartest or what we would necessarily do. My two cents.

Shepherd watched the bard diminish into the streets of the town and turned towards the forest. He took a breath, barely audible and closed his eyes, silently he felt the anxiety, the worry, the terror of the people. The drunkenness, the sleep, the sex and the depression that permeated the souls of the people under the roofs of Balding Bear. There was sin within these citizens but no evil. So it was beyond them something deeper and bigger lurking, haunting them. He felt a darkness, a shadow cast itself over the edges of the town. Wolves were coming. Perhaps Bezmir would get a taste of his own proverbial wolves. Shepherd looked to Zau, they would travel together. She could be an asset but Shepherd couldn't help but worry as a father, as a Shepherd, she had spent many years facing trouble but experience wouldn't always overpower evil.

He began to walk and looked over at her. Carefree even joyful, he sensed a certain disapproval within her. He could not find peace at times like these, a stoicism perhaps but never happiness. This was not existing in the future, this was the present conflict and this was pressing danger. It existed now whether they were there or not, it filled his soul. Shepherd rested a hand on Zau's shoulder for a moment and as she turned her head he looked deep into her eyes. He said nothing but he allowed himself to connect for a moment. That was all, he would not risk others lives by entering their crisis in disconnect. He travelled across the plains the grass about his feet whispered to him of the pounding paws that approached and he looked into the wood. Through the trees, the two could see the forms of the wolves fast approaching. Shepherd watched them and again breathed.

Fur flew and teeth gnashed. Paws trampled the grass bed beneath the forms of the approaching wolves. Blood pumped through the organisms. Shepherd pressed through their physical forms and into their souls. He found a hollow there, though. A blackness. As he entered him they touched, he and the evil.

Who are you?

I am Shepherd.

Shepherd... Shepherd... Has my toying drawn you here? Was it you in the tavern? There was something unnatural about your presence. And what of those with you? Also unnatural...

You know that I am more natural than all else. It is you who are unnatural. You have fouled the bodies of these beautiful creatures and torn their souls from their flesh.

I have filled these dogs again. Made them stronger. They are better, than they were. They have a purpose.

I was their purpose. They were mine, my children and I will have them again.

They no longer want to be yours. They belong to me now. They are my monsters.

It is only you who are the monster. Yield. This will not end well for you cruel spirit.

Do not be foolish Shepherd, I will watch you kill your babies and then see you bring me do. I will crush the greatest spirit of this world.

...and there was only cackling laughter...

Shepherd draw out from the bodies and opened his eyes. The wolves were coming and Shepherd had little time.

"These are natural wolves, filled with an unnatural evil. The form that occupied the alley was much more than a man, Zau. He has taken these wolves from us. I do not know if any of their souls are left but I refuse to watch them die. There is more at work here and no lives can be collateral damage. You are a friend of the woods. Plead your case, get the forests help in ceasing this cancer from taking more life. I need time Zau but I can bring new life to these wolves. There is something... important about Bezmir watch him there is more than wolves to come." Shepherd looked at her for a few moments before bending down and spreading his fingers through the grass. The blades wrapped themselves about his hand clutching him drawing him close to the earth. Slowly as his knees buried themselves into the dirt the grass drew itself to him. He became further and further drawn into the grass. Pulled deeper and deeper until he was lying legs stretched out together and arms pulled out at either side the blades of grass kissing his skin. He let his mind drift into the grass, the plain, the environment, the nature... he could do in the physical world now, until the time was right. It was up to Zau and Bezmir.

At the edges of the plains a wandering farmer looked down and gaped as he watched the grass turn itself towards Balding Bear, the centre of the field and wither and die succeeding to the next rows of grass and to the next and to the next, burrowing its way to the man lying at Balding Bear, sacrificing their life and their energy for Shepherd to in turn sacrifice. Giving themselves to goodness.

Jethro surveyed the men aloft horses before them. They seemed to be awfully confident in themselves. Jethro smiled slightly... perhaps too confident? He was in the middle of a group which was being confronted by another party who was obviously out-numbered. On top of that, each one in Jethro's party was well-equipped. These men either profoundly believed in their cause, their ability or their desire to fight. Which was it and could they get away with anything?

[ooc: sense motive check on them as soon as he sees them - does he know who Bane is? he has travelled quite a bit]

Jethro looked over his group, waiting but readying themselves, Jethro knew bandits but he wasn't exactlly sure that these were bandits

[ooc: this depends on both the knowledge of religion and sense motive]

For starters a religious symbol implied something more than just greed that guided the hand. Was a cleric leading the party or was it a devout warrior? Either way both were bad news, they didn't simply go marauding they had faith in what they were doing and they would do it no matter what... Jethro sighed, someone had to talk to these men, he knew that he could talk well but wasn't sure if it was in his best interest, within his own party let alone the conflict, to nominate himself spokesperson, but he didn't want to watch as someone unconvincing or unintelligent stepped in his place, for now he would play it safe. He loaded a bullet into his sling as imperceptibly as possible and watched them carefully, keeping an eye on his own group. This was the telling moment, how would they fare. Jethro wasn't about to tire himself magically before he knew the bandits and their motives and he wasn't about to waste spells upon a a less threatening villian. Jethro looked them over.

He was betting the leader was a cleric, everything pointed to it, no hulking frame but a commanding charisma and a religious affiliation. Well armed but not a front fighter, if a leader. A half-elf, hard to guess with them, not a straight out warrior, which lead Jethro to believe that he also had some command of magic or such supernatural abilities. That's what they needed to watch out for: the unexpected Almyrikon could handle warriors but Jethro wasn't so sure about his experience with magic. The huge human with the madman look made Jethro's mind leap to Bearspaw, some form of barbarian? If not he was at least the fighter of the group he would be a match enough for Bearspaw his hulking frame matched their half-elf frontrunner's. The halfling. Jethro knew halflings and he knew to watch out for them. In a moment he could disappear and be behind them taking them out one by one while the party fought on oblivious. Jethro would have to keep an eye on him. The last one was who Jethro was really worried about. He looked like an obvious spell-caster and despite being one himself Jethro hated them, cunning plotters and you never knew what to expect from them. Well he would do his best to tackle him.

[ooc: how much of the following dialogue can i do and how long will it take?]

Jethro turned to the cleric, whispering, "I have a feeling their leader is of a religious nature, do you know a way we could cripple him, harming their leader won't help their morale in the least."

Sending a message to the half-orc and human behind him he murmured "Watch out for the half-elf and halfling I'm guessing they'll be sniping us off we want to be rid of them as quickly as possible. Keep a close eye on that halfling who knows when he'll disappear just to conveniently reappear behind our backs and get rid of us quickly and neatly."

To Kannizan Jethro conferred, "Perhaps one of the two humans could use a javalin in their sides if the choose to ask for it." Jethro shot the dwarf a grin.

He trusted Almyrikon's fighting sense enough to take care of himself also he had a feeling that the tribe leader wouldn't appreciate advice unless it came from another half-elf. He wasn't quite sure what to expect from Velina and was excited to see. He hoped he hadn't imposed himself, he merely wanted to come out of the fight alive. He smiled at the others and held his sling. "So who's gonna step forward and give them a reply." Jethro asked grinning broadly. He silently ran through spells in his mind... just in case he told himself.
