Well the post had an "if" in there so i thought you might want tchange iit knowing that its a definite one thing or the other.

I need to check the book on the sneak attack rules but im not sure you automatically get it here. In any case you dont need a sneak attack to kill these guys with on hit with your initial attack roll.

I'll try to post in the next couple days.

Edit: Sneak attack definitely applies here. Damn it's easy to get a sneak attack bonus O.o

That being said about turns, Theren is gonna go less anyway, so the goblins are next after Dane.

But I don't know if you want to edit your post Nomad in light of what I said or if you just want me to resolve it with my best judgment.

I'm gonna say, you either choose to attack here, or don't. It's your turn, and the goblins can't do anything until it's their turn. Oskarr was the bottom of the round.

Also, just saying, you don't have to leave your bow on the wagon (though you can if you want), you could just have thrown on your back or whatever.

Theren can do something now, if he likes.

Also, padre, just saying, technically I guess Nomad should have posted first. Oskarr was able to post twice because in my understanding you get your attack plus an action, so the attempt at negotiation was the action.

Norm: that isn't a bad idea... too predictable,eh? Goblin army!

The battle is going easier than i expected. Actually considered having the goblins fire arrows at oskarr from cover which would have increased the difficulty of the encounter somewhat. Then again, if all three goblins scored hits on oskarr, it'd be a very different battle.

I figure they attacked because they thought oskarr was the only one who was heavily armed, hoped to take him out quickly and deal with the other two characters they were aware of.

Dane, pavel, and theren (and skovl, if he's roused from his current state of distraction) are all 25 feet away at this point by my reckoning so all three can move in and attack.

I think the odds of friendly fire depend on the situation, and your character kind of has to use their best judgement. Right now, oskarr and the goblins are pretty close to each other, so if you miss, there is definitely a solid chance of you hitting him.

I'm gonna say that Dane, Pavel, and Theren still have a choice here, and they may very well fire before the goblins have a chance to respond, which might ruin your attempt to negotiate a surrender. Though I'm putting Dane and Pavel at 25 feet away at this point, so they can probably see what you're doing and heard what you said.

Also, I never said the goblins were dead. I was thinking about just giving them death saves after the battle was over. None of them have been killed outright by the negative damage equal to your max health rule.

sure, that's fine.

I'm wondering if I should let ya'll resolve your own attacks to save time. Probably not, that would get confusing.

The goblin tries to raise his scimitar to block the blow but isn't able to in time. Oskarr can feel the creatures skull cracking beneath his hammer and the goblin collapses, another ambusher biting the dust.

Let's try it this way: Roll for yourself. You need 15 to hit a normal goblin. You can roll for damage then, too, and I'll resolve the results.

Oskarr is next to post, he can attack one of the offending goblins. After he does his turn, that round will end and we will start the next round with Dane going first, then Pavel, then the goblins, Oskarr, and Theren

I just decided Pavel's and Dane's first attacks based on their actions and rolled for them. Pavel and Dane can shoot again, but there's a chance they could hit oskarr if they miss. Alternatively, they can rush up to Oskarr and join the melee next turn. Same with Theren.

It may be that Skovl doesn't even realize what's happening at the moment.

Oskarr hops off the wagon and scurries towards the dead animals, his hammer and shield at the ready. He rushes over and by a quick glance and the smell, he can tell that these horses have been dead for at least a day.

Scanning the thicket for enemies, bellowing his threat, he hears a shrill warcry: "Yayayayayayaya!" Four goblins, two from either side of the room, leap out of the thicket, swords raised, moving in on Oskarr with surprising speed.

An arrow from Dane's bow sails through the fray, and almost hits one goblin who saw it out of his peripheral vision soon enough to stop short and let it fly past him. But as he breathes a sigh of relief, a bolt from Pavel's crossbow thrusts into his side, and he slumps and collapses to the ground with a groan.

The other three goblins don't even realize as they each slash at Oskarr with their scimitars, intent on cutting him to ribbons. How ever, each of their blows is blocked and parried by the dwarf.

[Initiative Roll]: Including bonuses, Goblins rolled 9, Oskarr rolled 2, Pavel rolled 20, Dane rolled 22

It's a shame the last visited function seems to be broken. At least than I could tell if they're still logging in or something.

I'll consider that Norm, for the next couple of days, at least, I'll just try to be patient.

Theren can see that Dan notched his arrow. If the wagon slows or stops, or if Pavel and Oskarr suddenly stopped talking, Skovl would likely notice...probably, unless he's too distracted with his bedroll

Topic: The Lost Mine of Phandelver Q&A
Subject: Rolls

In my experience, the DM just tells you when to make a check. However, part of the reason for that, I suspect, is for spoilery reasons.

For example, if this was a real life game, and one of you said, "I want to check the cover-type areas for enemies" even if there weren't any enemies, I might make you do a wisdom check just to throw you off.

In this case, if there are enemies, and you're looking for them, and there are enemies, you would not roll. I MAY roll, if there are enemies, if I think you have a chance to spot them.

The other scenario is that, supposing there are enemies, I MAY roll anyway, even if you don't decide to explicitly check for badies.

Though I suppose that might relate to whether I roll against your passive perception or your perception skill. Where perception skill would be the actively/explicitly looking, and if you don't mention it, it would come down to passive perception.

So, to answer Norm, just be explicitly about whether your checking in your post, and how you are checking. Remember, perspective matters. Are you stopping the wagon fifty feet out, checking, and then proceeding? Are you approaching more slowly, oscillating your head back and forth as you go? Are you getting out of the wagon? All these things might matter as to whether or not you spot things (if they are there).

Nomad, that's a good point, you may recognize the horses, but it may be that you have to get closer in order to tell, or perhaps they are completely different horses.

I don't know if I want to formalize post order quite yet.

But for the post I just made, I think Pavel, Oskarr, and Dan should go first. One of the other characters can go second, depending on what the first person does. Like if Oskarr shouts "we need help" Theren post how his character responds to that.

Likewise with post frequency, I'm not sure it ought to be formal. I'm playing this by ear and seeing how it goes.

You've only been on the Triboar trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend in the road, you spot two dead horses about fifty feet in front of your wagon. Each has several black feathered arrows embedded in it's flesh. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thicket on either side.

Pavel, Oskarr, and Dan spot the gruesome scene first. Skovl would only see it if he goes to the front of the wagon and looks over the two front riders shoulders, and since Theren is trailing a ways, he doesn't have an angle on the sight either (plus the wagon would be in the way anyway). Of course, he can quickly catch up with the wagon if he hears commotion up ahead or sees it stop.
