Subject: ah

No problem Tann, I ranted at 3rd edition and up just like you are doing now. But in the end I like it's complete structure better than 2nd edition. A ranger does get the manyshot for free at some point, but that is if he choses to go with the archery specialization. You've gone for the two weapon fighting special (I gave you the choice when we made Malius.)

Anyway... I forgive you for ranting, but I have to agree that at a low level like 5th is, two arrows a round is a little much without sacrificing something for it (the sacrifice would be 'buying' the feat.) But don't sweat! At 6th level.. which is getting closer... you'll be able to make two attacks in 1 round.

Good morning!

Alloryen Kingdom
East of Hith Elee
6th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
11:05 am

After the creature’s unheard roar it struck the companions that they could not communicate. It took them a little while longer to realize the impact the silence had on their skills as a team.

Loda ran in first, drawing her axe as she went. Gothard moved his head in his neck in a howl before running in, but there came no sound to inspire fear in his opponent. He flung himself at the lizard and bit down into its flank, drawing blood.
(Loda herself couldn’t deal a hit because she doesn’t have a the Quickdraw feat. Next round she will).

Quilanday called out without result as well, and stepped into the battle with her rapier. She jabbed it at the lizard and punctured his flank, only inches away from where Gothard had bitten down.
Geimiedefher knew what his comrades needed: a little encouragement from the Almighty Creator! He started the incantation that would Bless them all. But he soon found that his spell would not reach beyond the silence barrier. Even though he tried, he could not find a connection with Kharox, and was left desolated.

Wolf got up reached for his sword. He flung it at the creature a little too wild, and he missed it by three feet. Elessarae stood grounded, but her mind raced in an attempt to think her way out of the paralysis. She recalled an old tune that would definitely inspire courage into her friends. But she struck another obstacle, besides the absence of sound; she was unable to move, and her lips could not form words. In fact, she found that she could not move at all.
(Your mind is now the only thing working, as your muscles do not do anything but the bare necessities to live.)

The creature then lashed out with its talons at Quilanday. They cut through her armour and dug deep into her skin. She wanted to pull back, but the claws had her hooked and was unable to retreat. The monster’s long jaws closed over her shoulder and bit down hard. Although the heroes couldn’t hear her scream, they could feel the pain stream from her agonized face.
Draven too wanted to join the battle, but he found himself incapable of moving.

Finally Malius grabbed two arrows and knocked them after each other, but he wasn’t fast enough. His first arrow hit the creature square in the leg though, and it took a step backwards, releasing Quilanday from its hold.
(You need either the Manyshot feat, or a higher level to shoot 2 arrows in one round.)

(OOC: that was the first round of combat. The creature is bleeding, but so is Quilanday. Thondrek didn’t do anything since Kaelyn didn’t post. Draven and Elessarae didn’t do anything because they are paralysed for an unknown number of rounds, and Geim’s spell didn’t work because of the area silence.)

Subject: oh ... and

I don't think we have a lot of French people here, so I'm just going to write what everybody already knows:

The French mostly despise English. Fantasy and me were in Paris some time ago, and we could hardly use English with the common folk. In stores, people would have trouble, and prefer speaking their own language. The knee-jerk reaction of all Parisians to the question "do you speak English", is 'non', which proves that they know what you're saying, right?

It is truly ridiculous how they hold on to their own language in a place as international as Paris.

Topic: Addy needs your help! (Non-native English and bilinguals especially!)
Subject: From NL

Alright, here are some answers for you:

1) No, English will never replace Dutch, but it will replace a lot of words. It already does replace words, for which we have a perfectly fine Dutch alternative. But it's the influence of business and its english orientation that replaces them usually. Also, a lot of job-titles are now English, but again, this is mostly in businesses.

2) English is very common, but not as common as people would like to think. People are capable of understanding english to a certain level, and they can speak it, but when confronted with it, they are having difficulty, and of course other people don't speak it at all. This strikes me as very odd, since English is taught in schools from an early age, you hear it on TV and in music.

English is heard in movies, we don't synchronise voice-overs like the Germans and the French do a lot. It happens for kids' shows that are imported from non-Netherlands countries. This happens because the kids are unable to read the subtitles and because it draws and easier crowd. Shows for teens and up are hardly ever dubbed. In fact, I can't think of one at all.

3) German is taught in high school, for one or two years, with the possibility to choose it in later years. We are located directly next to Germany and a lot of people know at least a few words German, if only to say nasty stuff in case of a soccer-match, which are always heavily anticipated. But German is not such a frequent language as English by far.

4) French is taught all through high school, until the point where you choose your own classes. You can drop it then. But French is also the language that is mostly forgotten after high school, unless people frequent France, or have some other connection with the language. It does not have the obvious similarities with Dutch that German has (you are pretty much capable of following a German conversation if you know Dutch and the other way around (though capable of figuring it out, it's still not THAT easy)).

Other languages aren't taught as much I believe. At least, when I was in high school (which is the place to learn other languages besides English), your options were limited to German and French, and for some people Latin. Perhaps Spanish is now taught as well. It would seem logical.

5) answered that one I believe. English from age 9/10 and up, I think. Other languages in High school for 2 to 3 years.

I hope nobody minds that I'm updating a lot. I have the time and motivation for it, so if I'm skipping over things, let me know, or backpost if you haven't done your thing.

I feel like we're getting to the pace that was intended for this adventure though, and it's keeping things speedy and you're getting leads this way. Keep up the good work!

I've given those of you who have been active a little bonus XP. I don't know if we are even reaching a higher level in this adventure. It IS possible though, so I'm counting anyway.

~Positive Tide is normal

“Well, information… “ Goddfrey scratched his head, sending a cloud of flower into his hair. “I don’t really see a lot of the old Orphans anymore. I haven’t seen or heard from Joey or Mills in some time. I’ve seen Grikky walk around patrolling the city once. He didn’t see me though, even though I waved.”

His face brightened when he remembered something.

“I’ve seen Dorothy though! Not too long ago. She came into the shop, didn’t even know it was mine. She said she had something to celebrate and bought a few of my cream-rolls. Dory sure was looking happy and healthy. She was heading for the Freemen’s Way; some shady tavern. I’d never heard of it though.”

(OOC: Neither have you with knowledge Local checks, you’re going to have to ask around if you want to find it.)

Then the door opened and Keira, Goddfrey’s assistant, peeped her head around the corner.

“Lov.. I mean, Goddfrey, there’s a gentleman from that expensive bakery, who wants to speak to you about the orders.”

Goddfrey nodded to her and then turned to his brothers and sisters. He pointed his thumb at the door.

“I got a good deal with them that I don’t want to miss. Stick around if you like, I’ll be done in a little bit. You can take a bread each if you want to leave now. I gotta go do this though.”

And he returned to the front of the shop, leaving the companions alone in the warm room.

(OOC: Pet names are fine, Ayrn. If you think Pio names them like that, being the older brother type he is, you should use them. )

Goddfrey's mouth dropped at the news that their father was in danger. The baker was a big man, with hairy muscled arms, but would never harm another being. Otherwise he would've made a fine addition to any adventuring party, or perhaps the guards.

"I don't know how I could help you. I need to run my bakery."

He looked around the room until his eyes rested upon the two ovens.

"I could give you guys free bread though. That way you won't go hungry while you go around the city. I've got some good stuff that will fill you up for at least half a day."

He grabbed two fresh loafs of bread from the shelves and eagerly placed them in the companions' possession, glad to be of any help.

"Do you guys need anything else? I mean, you came to me for help right?"

If you follow the link that I put at the bottom of your character sheet, Tann, you'll find a list of all the spells you can cast as a ranger, and if you click on a spell, you'll find all the info you need.

But for now: Yes, that includes Summon Nature's Ally spells. :S

Goddfrey looked at Llammoth, and his mouth dropped.

"What do you mean, the Orphanage is in trouble? I haven't heard anything. Been busy baking bread and running the shop. Keira here helps me out though."

He pointed at the girl, who was in her early twenties, and smiled a bit sheepishly.

"Come, tell me about the trouble in the back. Maybe I can help you."

He took them all into the back of the shop, where the actual bakery was located. There were two furnaces, closed off with metal doors, and shelves with fresh and stale bread. On Goddfrey's worktable stood a big chocolate cake that he had been finishing for selling when his brothers and sisters arrived.

"So, what is wrong?"

The Broken Grommel

6 days left

~Positive Tide is normal

Bollo Regardian was a simple man. He had seen some adventures in his days, mostly touring the countryside and running from guards, but still adventures to a man like him. He couldn't handle a sword, but was comfortable with a dagger, and his big muscles scared most folk away from a fight. He had taken over the Grommel from its previous owner and had minded his business with only one intention: keeping it going. It was that simple.

Although the group had many questions for him, Bollo was unable to give them any information that they did not already know. In fact, it became rather clear that Bollo had no lust for involvement, but kindly told them that if something would come up, he would send word to the Orphanage. He was sure happy there was such a place for kids in need. To help them in their quest, he gave them their drinks free of charge.

"Every little bit can help in raising that money!" he said, and with that the conversation was over.

The group made their way down the alleys into the wider streets of Drefast. The crowd became thicker and so did the people’s purses as they entered Rogue-valley Square, the unofficial nickname people gave the market on the east side of the city. Only one street away was the bakery that Goddfrey had taken over after he finally left the Orphanage. They all knew Goddfrey as a young man, even simpler in his ways than Bollo had been. Goddfrey wasn’t stupid, but he was as innocent as an aristocratic four-year-old. He had tried many professions but finally settled at a bakery, where he had found his talent. The smell of hot bread told them they had found the place before their eyes knew it.

A girl behind the counter welcomed them after she had served the other customers. She was a friendly lass and called out to Goddfrey, who appeared a moment later with hands white with flower and a smile wider than the Thunder River.

“Guys!!” He called out, and gave them all a firm hug. “It’s so good to see you all! Is there some kind of renunion? Where’s Ormander?”

Alloryen Kingdom
Hith Elee
6th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
10:45 am

Wolf was ready to go, but Quilanday had a few things to say.

“Geimiedefher, we cannot simply cut down the tree. Its roots and chips would continue to spoil the earth, and the hardship of healing it would be even greater.”

She turned to Elessarae. “I know the Flame Keep has interrogated your goblin, but he seemed to be ignorant of details that could help us. As for protected gear, unless you have an idea how to make the items you just named we need to work with what we have. I don’t think any of us is capable of casting a spell to make us fly.”

As nobody said otherwise (I assume), she finally faced the warrior Wolf again. “You have seen the tree, what can we expect?”

“I don’t know,” came the surprising answer. “I haven’t seen it. I’ve never been near it, but I can bring you straight to its location. Call it intuition.”

“Alright, I suppose that answer will have to do. Let’s go now, if we have everything we need?”

(Time to get supplies that you can specify in the Q/A. I’ll let you know what you can find, and what you cannot find)

When Wolf went around the corner of the inn, Quilanday whispered to them: “We follow him, but I don’t trust him one bit. Be ready for the unexpected.”

Wolf seemed to know very well where to go for somebody who had never been to their destination. He lead them through the village, which caused Aluwego to grab the nearest person by the arm, Loda in this case, and breathe in short gasps every time he saw a Sylvari body. Everyone in the group could now clearly see that not all the bodies were mutilated. Some seemed to have just given in, as if the soul had been harmed rather than the flesh.

The journey continued, leaving the village behind. The trees looked healthy and bright in the rising day. The air was calm and the forest seemed at peace. But there were no birds to sing praise to the beauty surrounding them. There were no squirrels jumping from branch to branch, finding food and each other. The forest lacked wildlife, and without it, it was a desolate place.

But if Wolf noticed he didn’t show. He walked in a steady pace, never slowing down or speeding up; making turns and following an unknown lead without a path or compass.
After twenty minutes of non stop hiking he suddenly stopped and drew his sword. He didn’t say anything, but looked straight ahead. The forest was thick, and vision was limited. Without a sound a sudden wave went through the bushes on the right. They burst open and in the midst of a cloud of leafs, a big reptile leapt up and knocked the warrior down. It turned on its heels and opened its mouth wide in a silent roar. They could all feel how a sudden pulse went through their bodies, tightening muscles in spasms and uncontrolled reflexes. But most of them were able to shrug it off. Draven and Elessarae however, found their senses dulled, and their bodies unwilling to cooperate. They stood their, paralyzed, while the others had to deal with this monster. Aluwego seemed to suffer from a similar effect, because he was frozen with his arms held up to protect his face.
Quilanday yelled something, but the words didn’t reach the ears of the other members of the group. They were all on their own now.

(OOC: You cannot communicate with each other since a silence hangs over the area that can’t be penetrated. The order of walking is: Wolf, Quilanday, Elessarae, Thondrek, Malius, Geim, Loda, Draven.)

“That answer will have to do then.” Wolf said to Draven’s answer, and lowered his sword. He ignored the others, even Elessarae’s question about the fairies. He didn’t even so much as glance at them. For all they knew, he hadn’t even heard what they said.

Aluwego was still crying, but his agonized heartbreak was reduced to sobbing. A few steps away, Quilanday looked at Wolf, and seeing the man had cooled down a bit, called to them all.

“We can’t linger too much on distrust. We find ourselves in a situation where we are not all acquainted, but we all have the same goal. Now how will we go about finding this tree? I think it’s more important to find the tree than finding the monster. If we don’t find the source of this tragedy, there will be more monsters before we know it.”

“I know where that tree is.” Wolf replied dryly. “I can take you, if you are ready.”

I'll put the Broken Grommel on the map as well then, though on this scale it will appear very close to the Orphanage, which is why I never included it yet.

Also, I've edited my last post, and added the following to the top:

The Broken Grommel

From now on, my updates will give you:
-The place where you currently are in the city
-How many days you have left before Judgement Day
-The Tides of magic, both Positive and Negative (you can look up the effects they have on your magic or magic of opponents in my post on page 1 of this Q/A, right above the map)

I will not start puting up the exact time of day in this game. Occasionally something will be added in my posts like: at midday they arrived at... etc. That's basically all you're getting, to keep everybody from complaining too much if I counted 3 minutes too many for a walk down some street.

Yes, you're on a tight schedule... well, actually, that depends on how you handle things. I'm not saying this adventure will end in 6 days of IC time. If you guys can figure everything out within 4, then you'll all get a nice bonus!

Amsterdam? The book must also be about the life in that city then, otherwise I wouldn't see why the title wouldn't include more than just the place where it happens, right?

At the moment, I'm sort of a Hellboy fan, and there are some very nice novels written about this superhero. It's written like fantasy, but in the current age. Most of these have strong connections with the actual folklore, religions and tales of (ancient) cultures. While we mostly know Hellboy from the action-packed movie, these books focus on more than just a bunch of battling. And I feel more connected to what is going on, since it is fantasy in my own world. It is recognizable, but with all the elements that I like in fantasy books.

In 'Bones of Giants', for instance, Hellboy and his team dig into the Scandinavian culture and his mind is slowly taken over by the spirit of a legendary warrior as a giant from the old world rises, and creates chaos.

As each of the companions found their way back to the front of the inn, the stranger answered Malius request for his name.

“My name is Wulvomyr Alloryen, but you can call me Wolf. I come from the forest. Now tell me why your companion wasn’t attacked like the rest of the villagers!”

At that point, Thondrek came back, dragging a young Sylvari along, the only survivor he had found. The Khord regarded the man for a moment and replied:

“Ye talkin bout Draven? ‘es as strange as they come, ugly too. Mebbe whatever came across ‘m thought ‘e was a relative or something.” Wolf didn’t laugh at his comment but stared at him indifferently.
“Anyways, this is Aluwego Marrienbark, ‘es lost a lot today as anyone can imagine. So we’s got to keep ‘im safe.”

Elessarae recognized the young Sylvari from their previous meeting, hours earlier.

“I understand your loss Aluwego Marrienbark, the time to grieve will come, but for now we must stop that creature and then find the infected tree.”

If she had thought these words would lift the man’s spirit, she was wrong. He grabbed her hand, the only familiar thing he saw between all these strangers, and held on to it with all his strength.
“No, don’t go after it! It will kill you all, we will all DIE!”
He was screaming through his tears now, a broken reflection of the confident archer she had met before.

Geimiedefher, who came out of the inn at that point, entered a situation where Malius was pointing his arrow at a stranger, and his newfound bladesinger companion was clutched by another newcomer. At least Thondrek had returned safely.
"Only two survivors so far?" he questions the other. "That is sad news. Too much death and destruction. We need to get those trees taken care of and kill that mutant critter."
He showed his companions the Galbladder Beer he had found, but most of them only listened with a half ear, preoccupied by other matters.

Elessar tried to calm the young archer, and looked at the other Sylvari as well.
“Sir Warrior, Aluwego we need to find that creature as soon as possible. Can you think of a place where we might lure it or drive it, where we can set up a trap using fire against it? Also do either of you know of a large net that we might use?”

Wolf looked at her, raised the tip of his longsword into the air and pointed.
“Finding a large net is not my business. I want to know why HE was not attacked!”

Draven had rounded the inn and entered the scene.

Lady Quilanday, who up to that point had been uncharacteristically silent, stepped in between Wolf’s longsword and it’s path towards Draven. Her gaze was upon the dark warrior though, her back to the tip of the sword.

“As blunt as Wolf here seems to be, his question is a good one. Why were you not attacked?”

(OOC: I usually don’t like posts that copy everything that has already been said. But I deem it necessary here, because there are too many questions and too many different interactions going on to keep track of in a natural way. I’ve uncomplicated them a bit, made everything more fluent, but that includes me leaving away Elessar’s final requests and words, for instance. We can assume she might still say them, but not right now. Same goes for Geim's question. There is just too much going on for a rush of orders and questions. I hope that is alright with everybody)

Pio returned to the table after ordering a platter of ale from Bollo Regardian, the barkeeper who had served him many times before. The knight was eager to gather knowledge of the other's whereabouts, but his attempts were cut short by Llammoth. The rogue was determined not to waste time with 'small talk', even though the knight's intentions might have been to tighten the bonds in the group by sharing experiences. Or perhaps he was just really interested in what the others had been up to.

The half orc had some rumors she had caught on the streets. Most where outragiously ridiculous, but some had more potential. One rumor was the one that caused this whole quest: that the orphanage had ordered the theft in hoping to sell the statue for a large sum of money. Another was that it was a joint effort from the thieves' guilds. Another rumor told of a group of sages coming together and stealing the statue to use it in a ritual involving the Standing Stones of Drannon. Yet another was that the statue wasn't stolen at all, but Velch held it back to gain more money from the falsly accused.

All in all there were possibilities in some of these rumors, but which one was true, or even vaguely related to what really happened was hard to tell.

(OOC: I'm not making this easy for you, as you understand. You're going to have to go out and gather the pieces around town. Basically, you are free in your actions, but you have to go places.)
