K21? That's outside the Castle. Or maybe I'm not reading the map correctly, which is entirely possible.

Are we where the T marks the pit Brutal fell into?

Luke didn’t drop on his belly. This hallway was only 20 feet long, and there was still room to manoeuvre past the trapdoor. He had no time to think in any other way but strategically. If there were Germans coming through the other door they would be sitting ducks. Brutal especially.

So moving as fast as he could (possibly jumping the pit if that is at all possible) he sprinted for the other door. Taking a breath just to note on which side the door’s hinges were positioned he readied his gun and placed himself with his back against the wall. If they would storm into the corridor, he’d catch them by surprise. If they’d open up the door with more caution, he would wait, silently, holding back as far as possible to avoid being seen.

(OOC: he's only taking the running jump if he's confident he'll make it. Otherwise he'll use the edges near the wall).

Subject: over sooner than expected. :P

The bolt of lightning left a sharp smell in the small corridor, while the Khordaldrum cleric went about doing what he did best: patch people up. First he went over to Glitch, who was standing there, shaking like a leaf. He touched his eye-patch and the little wizard’s shoulder. A wave of warm energy flowed from his fingers, but they didn’t do a lot of healing. Sure, the tension in the Brath’s muscles subsided a bit, but he still felt like he had just put his fingers into two tiny holes in the wall, even though he didn’t even know what that meant. The Cure Minor wounds was expected to do just very little healing and Ta’nil was equally treated to a small relief of the pain and pressure.

Still, with the healing done as best as it could, they now faced the task of entering the protected chamber.

When Brokkrok swung the door open and stepped inside he noted the skeletons, and they noted him too. Eager jaws parted and arms stretched out almost as if longing for a comforting embrace. The cleric only took a moment to survey the room and in that moment the two nearest skeletons attacked. Unsure as their footing was, their speed was faster than expected and they clubbed their bony claws onto his head. Luckily for the cleric the skeletons’ haste did nothing good for their aim. They failed to hurt him.

Arra saw the attack and wanted to push through the ranks of her team mates, but decided to hold back until there was more room.

That turned out to be a very wise decision. Brokkrok touched his eye-patch for the second time in under five minutes. The holy symbol of the God of Righteous battle started glowing with a hot white radiance, and the skeletons immediately halted. They held their hands up as if they could do anything to stop the deadly power of Therassor. The first two sank to their knees, then suddenly bucked as if vomiting heavily, and exploded into dust. The four other skeletons just fell into heaps of unmoving bones.

With the threat out of the way, they could enter the room. It proved to be an old wine cellar, long since abandoned and covered in a thick layer of dust. The only tracks here were the sharp prints of skeletal feet dragging in aimless patterns. A quick search revealed a small barrel of wine, 100 ft of silk rope, a small chest with a small magnifying glass and an old handheld harp.

(I need to know who will take what items. The same goes for the armor in the previous post, which hasn’t been claimed yet.)

As I said before, Aly is not even an NPC. She's supposedly there, so that Ayrn can pick her up any time he wants back in, but I'm not controlling her. She will not fight, will not interact with others and she won't cast any spells.

Brokkrok could do a lot of things. Let's find out what you decide on.

First of all: Good luck with this game! Zombie games are awesome, so people should join.

I wanted to give you a word of advice though. Requiring people to post in a specific order is very tricky. What do you do if person 1 posts one day before the deadline, or if there is not deadline, doesn't post for weeks. When will player 2 know to go ahead?

I think it's wiser to tell the players to post within a certain time-span (a week, 2 days), and require solid posts of more than two lines).

Alright, this is how I wrote the update:

1) bolt of lightning explodes
2) pain, pain, pain
3) option to heal
4) somebody opens the door

So you guys have time to heal, since I reasoned you'd want to do that first. Before entering the room.

Yes, the skeletons are chained, but the chains are very long.

Subject: every day I'm shuffling

The darkness subsided a little when Brokkrok produced his Everburning Torch. The flickering orange light reacted heavily to the damp air, as if enchanted by the horrid fumes. Shadows fled to corners as they lowered themselves into the underground hallway. The small tunnel was dry, with cobwebbed walls and eerie silence. Behind them, Roy Pikarov stood pleading in the doorway, his voice losing strength with every word.

“Please, don’t go down there!”

But they did.

(OOC: Walking order: Ta’nil, Brokkrok, Glitch, Traubon, Arra)

Ta’nil went first, and inspected the door on the left first. He listened closely, but heard nothing besides his own heavy breathing. Using his thieves’ tools he started picking the lock, only to find that the door was already open.
Behind it lay a very narrow cabinet, ten feet deep with a tile floor and some wooden shelves. A few old brooms and gardening supplies still rested here, but hadn’t been touched in a long time. On the lowest shelf lay a very old chain shirt, which held a small metal plate with the symbol of Solanis on it. Perhaps this was Sofia’s father’s?

Requiring a bit more to keep his mind occupied, the rogue continued to the first door on the right. He listened intently but again heard nothing. He inspected the door for anything suspicious, but soon realized this one was as harmless as the one on the left.

Or so he thought.

Barely had he touched it or a sharp pain shot through his arm, locking muscles and sending his hair shooting straight out. A bright flash erupted from the door at the same time as a stroke of lightning coursed through his body and sprang to the ones behind him. Brokkrok was the only one who was able to jump aside in time to avoid a more painful encounter. Still, the lightning struck him and clasped his jaws so tight that it hurt. Luckily for the two of them, Traubon and Arra were out of the spell’s reach.

(OOC: Ta’nil is down to 2 HP, Glitch to 3. Insert actions here before entering the room.)

With the trap sprung, the door was ready to be opened. A dark and hollow chamber lay before them. It was quite big, and seemingly deserted. But when the light of Brokkrok’s Torch penetrated the darkness, shuffling forms came out of the shadows.

Six skeletons were coming at them. They wore commoners’ outfits, and long chains dangled from their necks to end in iron rings on the walls of the chamber. They were bound, but their chains long enough to reach at least every corner of the room. Hollow eyes stared endlessly in the distance, but their movement seemed focused. Bone scraped over stone tiles as they came for the adventurers.

(OOC: fight will begin with initiative. So state your findings and your intentions. Also, I need to know who opens the door if it is NOT Ta’nil.)

Subject: torches and going down

Luke halted, as they all did, when the sound of gunfire entered the winding stairway from a doorway to the right. His first instinct was to order the team to investigate, but he paused. This was a castle filled with German soldiers, and it was being overrun by enemy forces. Even if these enemy forces weren’t human, there would still be a lot of bullets flying. They simply couldn’t afford checking out every sound they heard.
The sooner they would destroy that portal the better.

“We can’t be delayed,” he stated. “Mrs Hoffstetter, do we need to go further down?”

His tone implied that they needed to keep moving. Down if that was their destination.

(OOC: If she indicates that they need to take this exit, he’ll send in the team in the usual manner. On another note, he’ll not use the flashlights unless he really has to, preferring torches; those have flames.)

Sorry. The smell is too overwhelming for any scent-related ability to function.

Besides, Arra is Kazari and therefore cat-related, so she has no scent abilities. Cat's are known for their amazing sight and hearing, but not for their keen noses.

Edit: The druid is not an active party member at this time. If you want to change the slot of that spell to another spell (so: acting like you never cast it) then that's fine by me.

Topic: Monster Hunters Collective - Q/A
Subject: It appears

It appears you'll be doing some dungeoneering instead of asking farmers around. Of course, I had to take certain liberties, which I think are not overly invasive. In fact, I think this will be necessary more often in the future, from my side as well as yours. Assuming certain things is part of keeping the game flowing from one interesting point to another. Hopefully you'll be able to work with this.

Also: As Ayrn's not playing at this moment, it is unwise to assume his character will do certain things. Aly is a bit of an ethereal NPC. She's there, but we should not utilize her explicitly if we can help it.

Another note: I don't like parties which split up. For two reasons:

1) I have to update two 'stories' at the same time. I don't mind doing this, but I do mind the fact that the rest of the party still reads what is going on and this kind of situation encourages meta-gaming.
2) I want to keep everybody alive. If half a group encounters a monster that would require the entire party to defeat, you'll be done for. And in online gaming it is very difficult to back out while you still can.

If you can prevent splitting up, I would advice you do so.

Subject: the church... part II

They sat or stood in silence together for a few moments, each of them for their own reasons. Then Arra interrupted with a question that clearly showed that she had no idea what religion was about.

Roy opened his eyes and gently swallowed his irritation and smiled at her warmly.

“You can ask me q…”

"If you want to do science, you have to literally do something... I say we check out the rest of this church while we're here." Glitch interrupted. They had waited long enough to find out what was going on in this town. He was growing bored.

Brokkrok abruptly stood up from his own prayers and added his own ideas, splitting the party in two, so they could be swifter in their search. He was hardly done explaining his thoughts when the Sylvari scout sounded his agreement. Within a few seconds the quiet of the church became a murmur of excitement and action. All, of course, if the doctor didn’t object.

Doctor Roy Pikarov did object. In fact, he stood up from his prayers and with a heated face pleaded: “Look, I told you to leave me in peace with my prayers. I have a long day ahead of me, in which I’ll gladly make time to talk to you again, but right now… don’t touch that!”

Glitch and his animal companion had already made their way to the door on the right and pulled it open. A waft of rancid air washed over the two of them, and it took the Brathun a moment or two to lose the urge to trade his morning breakfast for an empty stomach. Gadget, green around his nose, lay limp over the Technomancer’s shoulder with his tongue dangling from his mouth. The animal was avidly suppressing a desire to soil Glitch’s shirt.

Beyond the door lay a straight, narrow stairway down. The solid, stone steps glistened with moisture in the twilight of the church’s interior, but soon disappeared into darkness.

“Don’t go down there. I beg you people to leave this town alone. Everything will be fine, if you just leave.” Roy whispered, his words laden with sadness.

Despite the doctor’s heartfelt words, there was no turning back anymore. They realized now that the earthy smell of rot had only been a tip of the vast odour that oozed from the opening to the church’s catacombs.
Slowly they descended the stairway, only to find that it lead into a corridor washed over by darkness, heading east. With some artificial light, or even darkvision, they were made aware of three doors; one on the left, and two on the right.

(OOC: I need the order in which you’ll go through the doors, and of course the precautions that you take before doing so.)

Subject: continuing

Roy Pikarov regarded them all for a moment or two.

“Please, join me in prayer.”

Without waiting for a reaction he sank down to his knees again and closed his eyes. He was interrupted though, by a few sharp questions from Brokkrok. The village doctor sighed, and opened his eyes.

“I come here every day for half an hour. My fellow Sedostrians know I do, and know not to bother me, unless they want to join me, which hasn’t happened for months.”

He swallows hard when asked about the bad state the church is in.

“Long ago, a priest of Solanis came to Sedostra with his daughter and wanted to start a church here. He said the Radiant Father desired it and he didn’t question his God’s inspiration. It took him many years to build this church, but he gained quite a few followers in the process. His dedication was contagious. When he died, his daughter, Sofia, took over as leader of the church. She was of an exceptional beauty and a radiant person to be near. In every way was she the embodiment of the God she served, and I felt blessed that she would share her life with Sedostra.”

He pauses for a few moments, obviously remembering the priestess. Then he looks at the group and shrugs.

“Sofia died about a half year ago, after fighting a bad fever. After that, people stopped going to church. They stopped caring. I didn’t.”

He points towards the East wall. “She’s buried in the graveyard. Her grave is marked with the holy symbol of Solanis; a last farewell from the townsfolk.”

He sighs again and closes his eyes.

“Now, you can decide to join me, or leave me to my prayer, please.”

(OOC: He will not respond kindly to any more questions at this moment, and tells you that he wants to finish his prayers so he can get to work. He welcomes you to visit his home later, to talk some more.)

Topic: Monster Hunters Collective - Q/A
Subject: wow...answers

01/02 Where does the door on the right lead to? Outside or down?
Both doors are shut, and there is no indication where they will lead.

03. What type of mushrooms are behind the altar? Good or Bad?
You've never seen them before, nor anything like them.

04-11
I'll answer these in an In-Game post.

12. What does doctor Roy Pikarov know about the Undead sightings?
As much as you do. Though he isn't too thrilled about the remains of the skeleton being stored at his house.

13. Are there any secret legends that doctor Roy Pikarov knows about?
He knows some legends, but not concerning Sedostra or anything related to the quest.

14. Has doctor Roy Pikarov had any strange cases to treat recently? Animals? Humans?
He reports nothing special. Business is as usual.

15/16. Is there anywhere inside or outside the town that doctor Roy Pikarov views as suspicious?
Too be honest, nothing much happens in Sedostra. Ever. You are the strangers in town, right now. Sometimes people come in who want to buy mushrooms, or who stay at Granny Tapestry's place to continue their journey the next day. But though the disappearances are strange, he can't point a finger to anybody or anything.

17. Does doctor Roy Pikarov know who the purse belongs to that was found in the cemetery?
He recognizes it as his own. He must have lost it sometimes during his visit to the graveyard.

Subject: the church

Before exiting the graveyard, Glitch wanted to make sure they had covered every angle. Lowering his goggles provided him with a special sight. He found that it was always enhanced when he muttered the right kind of encouragement to the set of lenses and tapped them repeatedly. He concentrated for a moment or two, and realized that he was drawn back to the headstone with the holy symbol of Solanis. A very faint magical aura radiated from the symbol.

With his small hands, Glitch poked and investigated the symbol, only to find that he was able to pry it from the headstone. A small crevice in the stone was revealed when the symbol was removed, and in it lay the source of the magical aura Glitch had felt: a golden disc embossed with the image of a blazing sun. It had a faint aura of transmutation, meaning that it only held the most basic of spells. Still, it was a magical item, and most likely the first the members of the party had ever seen.

With no further magical findings, the group adjusted their attention to the church.

The entrance to the Church of Solanis faced the south of Sedostra. Two heavy oak doors, worn by weather and time, waited under a rose-like window of stained glass, with a yellowish disc of glass in its centre; the symbol for the God of Light. The building looked bruised, as if a heavy storm had swept over it and the damage had not been repaired. Some of its bricks were missing, wooden beams broken or crushed, and ivy started growing over its walls.

Suddenly, Brokkrok was overtaken by a sharp sensation of melancholia. His head spun for a second and a familiar voice thundered into existence in his mind, to echo down to a soft whisper. “Shrooms live of the death of other things. Use them, but never become a shroom yourself.”
Loco’s voice was gone as swiftly as it had come.

They opened one of the two heavy doors and went in. A tangy smell of rot welcomed them into an interior that looked even worse than the outside of the church. It was an aroma mostly found at indoor mushroom fields, where artificial autumns spring fungi from decaying leaves and woodchips. But this smell was almost overwhelming, and it emanated from the far end of the isle.

It was quite dark inside the church, with the coloured glass filtering the sunlight into what had once been a comforting twilight. Now it took a moment for them to take in the whole room at once as their eyes adjusted to the deeper shadows.
The benches on either side of the isle were empty, some of them overturned. The walls were painted with worn frescos of holy knights and angels of light. There was a door on either side of the end of the isle, and the floor was raised a few steps at the far end of the church. An altar waited there, but it looked ragged and discarded. In front of it, with his back to the group, a man was kneeling in deep prayer.

As they approached, they could see that behind the altar the ground was covered in sand and dirt, and pinkish bulbs of mushroom were starting to sprout from it. Some of those were small, others the size of a human head.

The man turned abruptly as they neared him, and Brokkrok recognized him as the town’s vet and physician, doctor Roy Pikarov.

“Oh, how good to see some new faces in the church of light. It’s been such a long time since anybody joined me here.”

He seems genuinely happy to see other people there with him and he invites you all to pray with him.

(OOC: gonna stop here. If you want to ask him some questions, you can do so in your post, or in the Q/A. Anything else you want to know, ask away. )
