Remembrances of Comedy Past

I really miss Jon Lovitz on Saturday Night Live. Who could forget "Master Thespian" (Brilliant!) or The Liar (Yeah, that's the ticket!) or his portrayal of The Devil (they even had a sketch where Lovitz, as Satan, appeared as a plaintiff on The People's Court)? And then there was a series of sketches where Jon and another person fancied themselves pick-up artists but had only abysmal luck with women. Tom Hanks paired with Jon in at least one of those.

Who else do I miss? Phil Hartman, of course. His impersonations of Phil Donahue and Frank Sinatra were simply genius.

Then there's Chris Farley. Obviously inspired by another SNL great, John Belushi, Farley's physical comedy was unparalleled I think even to this day. I had such high hopes when he teamed up with David Spade in the movies they did. Like Belushi and Hartman, Farley passed much too soon.

I miss the entire casts from 1975 through the late 80's. I don't watch much of the current lineup, though. I'd rather watch my dvd's of In Living Color (not to damn with faint praise; that was a terrific show in its own right).

You forgot the Candy man.......

You can't leave out John Candy, he was great in trains, planes and automobiles.

Wasn't Jon Lovitz married to ... ah... yeah, Morgan Fairchild, that's the ticket!

Who can make us laugh? The Candy Man can. . .

John Candy was phenomenal, yes, but he never was a regular cast member of SNL. Candy was a big (pardon the pun) part of Second City Television, which starred Joe Flaherty, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis and others. I want to say Harold Ramis was a part of that crew, too. Ramis and Candy had recurring roles as the Schmenge Brothers. SCTV is where Bob and Doug McKenzie ("Strange Brew") got their start, as well as Martin Short's goofy alter-ego Ed Grimley.

Shoot, now I gotta Google SCTV.

(Edit: OOPS! Not Ramis. Eugene Levy. Also, Shmenge, not Schmenge)

Good Edit...

Well good edit, you get another applaud for preventing a Werebear Catch. Good research too.

With any luck, comedy clubs will make a big comeback. The "Last Comic Standing" show may spark interest.

Last Comic Standing--First season

As a huge fan of stand-up, I watched the whole first season of that show. I'm still dumbfounded at how Dat Phan won the final showdown. Rich Vos should have taken that show easily. Phan's Comedy Central special (part of the grand prize) was such a snoozefest for me. Yes, we get it--you're Vietnamese, and your parents still haven't quite assimilated into American culture. Miss Margaret Cho beat that horse quite soundly some years back, so please move on!

Who else is funnier than Dat Phan?

Steven Wright. (I used to get his jokes. What happened?)
Dane Cook. (His work has suffered of late.)
Bobby Lee. (Will always be funnier than Dat Phan.)
Tom Green. (Making faux love to a dead moose is still better than Phan.)
Rita Rudner. (Classy and incisive.)
Andy Dick. (He literally facelicked almost the entire panel at William Shatner's roast. If for nothing else (and little else comes to mind.) gotta give him props.)
Carrot Top. ('Roid Rage and all.)

(Edit: This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list, just an illustrative one. Phan is a hack in my opinion and I would pay to see any of the one listed before going to see Phan for free.)

Why are you blushing?

Yes, Mr. Jeffries is funnier than Dat Phan. Assuming your parents let you watch/listen to Jim Jeffries, you may as well check out Rodney Carrington. That is, unless heavy Southern accents make you flee in horror. Having lived in Virginia all my life (the past several decades all in the same county) and surrounded by voices that exude the twang of banjos and fiddles, I am immune to any such vocal assault. Heck, in my normal speaking voice, I have little or no accent and have been told I sound like I come from Delaware.

Accalia, pardon me for sounding a bit patronizing, but honestly I think there's more appropriate comedic fare out there for you. Have you ever heard of Brian Regan?

No, really--look him up on YouTube.

Yeah don't grow up too fast...

Pit and I refuse to mature, well at least me anyway! You can't help growing older, but no one says you have to growup. Just respect others as you frollic through life and enjoy all that comes your way. Good and bad all pass in time and more comes around. If try to jump past your current time then you'll miss all of it's fun and maybe not really appreciate what you just jumped into.
