Subject: Question for the DM

Hey, I found the basic rules for Fuzion online at their website.

I take it that you are planning on using Character Points and Option Points? If so, how many CPs and OPs are we starting with? I know you told me that we would be roughly the same "power" level as, say, Aragorn. But a specific number for the CPs and OPs will really help me out.

Sorry, if I sound all caught up with the rules. I'll admit, I find free-form stuff really hard to work with, and prefer to read through a rules system and then go about creating my character. For instance, I had started making a character, working from Decipher's LotR Coda system (which, btw, seems pretty close to Fuzion). I really like the whole "subtle magic" stuff going on in LotR. So, I have something started, but I'm not sure if it will work anymore, after reading through your Magic section in the Q/A.

Also, how do we determine how many spells we actually know?

Thanks!

Subject: Oh, I gots me a little somethin' somethin' a'ight!

Asher laughed out loud as the passed the stage coach, “Who-wee! Haha! Sorry ‘bout that!”

“Asher!” Wolf calls out, “Try the horn - it’s the Fay-Fay Duh Pee-Yen brake now!”

Asher hits the horn and sure enough, the vehicle starts to slow as if he hit the brake. He turns to shout an affirmation to Wolf when a bullet passes close to his ear. The Kid snaps his head back to see the glint off a gun barrel. Outside the bank is smaller mule – parked with engine going. Inside the mule, someone with a rifle is shooting at them.

The Kid was already considering the distance and taking mental aim while Wolf came up and took control of the wheel.

“ Sheh-sheh my friend.”

Asher was already pulling up his rifle, double checking the distance, switching the weapon to full auto, and waiting for the Captain’s ‘okay’. “No problem, Wolf.”

“Oh, Tzao gao,” The mechanic exclaimed. “Cap’n, Asher, get ready to bail when I turn to block him in.”

Asher was about to say he had the mule in his sight, and figured he could probably fill the thing so full of hole it wouldn’t go no where soon, but the Captain beat him to the punch.

“Negative, Wolf,” Wyatt drawled all calm-like. “We’re bigger. Ram the Huen Dahn if Asher don’t have nothin’ to put holes in ‘im at this distance. Kid, if’n you got something to do him in, I’d suggest you do so, otherwise, grab hold of somethin’.”

The Kid grinned broadly, “Oh, I got a little something alright.” Taking aim with the assault rifle, he squeezed the trigger and released the spray of bullets.

[OOC: Asher is looking to target the mule, more so than the man. Not sure if this will work, but Asher’s hoping to punch so many holes in the opposing mule that it will at the very least not work. My deeper dream is that the thing will blow up. … Not sure how many bullets this eats up? Half a clip? (that would be 20 bullets)

If that’s really not possible, and Asher would know that, than Asher will just take a single shot against the man in the mule… with his assault rifle, that’s a d8 +2 step (talented) -2 step (range) +2 step (from Sung). One bullet used in this scenario.

Regardless, in round two, Asher will switch the rifle to burst fire and target the man (if he’s not disabled after round one)… this allows him to make three separate attacks against the target, each with a -2 step. Again, with the rifle, that’s a d8 +2 step (talented) -2 step (burst) +2 step (from Sung… how long do I get this bonus for?) +1 step (plot point… if I don’t get the Sung bonus). Three bullets used here.]

Now that Asher's is free of the wheel, it's time to bring the grizzly to bare down on our enemies.

Not only is that little twerp swiss cheese... I think we'll be trying to blow out that whole mule.

Oh, it's a happy day!

Are we supposed to be PMing our character ideas out to you, Brom, or are we suppose to be posting that information here?

Like I said, I'm thinking of a wizard type character. The more I think about it, the more I like the Arwen-esque type character -- and noble elven mage.

So, that's my deal... what are the rest of you thinking as far as characters are concerned? Brom, can you post what people are sending via PMs?

Subject: A couple of ideas...

I'd be interested in taking on a mage-type character. Either human or sylvari.

If the character is human, I imagine a male, low-key-ish type wizard. Ayrn gave me an idea of run his namesake character, the owner of the Tavern at the Edge of Bayris and a wizard of some renown.

I'm not sure I really want to play someone else's namesake character... but something similiar to what Ayrn has suggested sounds cool to me!

If the mage were a sylvari, I'd probably go with a female, and make the concept closer to the Beguiler class in 3.5 PHB2. She'd be a roguish enchanter/ illusionist, probably with some nobility about her. I also have Arwen, from LotR, in my mind.

There's a few of my ideas. The main theme is that I'm looking at creating an arcane magic-user.

Wyatt sighed and secured his hat more tightly on his skull while watching for an opportunity to bail should the need arise. "Fenris, you're my ship mechanic now, an' my ship mechanic don't fail at things. That's just unacceptable. So, we'll sit tight while you remedy the situation, and Asher pulls us nice an' steady up to the hitchin' post. Then we can all proceed on with the doin's of helping Sam out of whatever pinch he's managed to get himself into, and be back to Rocinante in time for Trish's dinner bell."

The Captain’s words brought confidence to the Kid, and Asher gave Sung a big grin. “Yeehaw, Captain. Home fer dinner sounds mighty nice.” Calling down to Wolf, “Don’t you worry none about the ride, Wolf. You fix them brakes… If I have too, I’ll just take the girl for another spin around the block ‘til you can slow her down.”

Subject: Probably need a bit more information.

As with any new "system", Brom, I think I might need a bit more information. For instance, it would probably be helpful for me to know roughly how "experienced" our characters are. Will we have a lot of ranks in which to buy skills? Or are we fairly inexperienced?

Also, I think I would find it helpful to have the list of skills with a brief description of what each one does. A bit of information on how the various magic forms work would be good too.

Finally, a little more information on what you are hoping to see as far as the "party" is concerned would be good. Are we just getting together for the first time, and we've somehow randomly been called together? Have we been adventuring together for a long time? Or are we "friends" like the adventuring group from the Dragonlance Books (maybe we haven't all adventured together recently, but we have in the past) and we've come together again after a time at the call of someone?

I know you said that you're not really planning on getting this game going until after CP, but the information requested above would be very helpful to me. I've got lots of "ideas" of characters I'd love to play... I'm just not sure I can create them in this system.

Thanks!

As Wolf tore out of the Roc, Asher held on tight, resisting the force that wanted to drive him over backwards. Nice… thought the Lad, impressed with how the new mechanic maneuvered the mule out of the ship.

The urgency of the idea that Dash might be in trouble, however, had caused Asher to forget all about the big crowd of people that had gathered outside.

Wuo duh Ma!” came out of the Kid’s mouth as Wolf managed to weave and dodge his way toward the crowd.

Then the band came into view.

Ai ya!” Asher ducked low to the mule, praying that noone was hurt. He cringed as he heard the harsh sound of something being sucked through the manifold. Looking behind them, Asher called out to the band, “Sorry, folks, it’s his first day.”

It was then that the Kid noticed the trail of fluid they were leaving behind them. Oh crap!

“Uh… Captain…”

Wolf seemed to make the same discovery, “Oh F***!! Cap’n, Asher hold on we lost the brakes.”

Looking forward again, Asher saw the other hover mule up ahead, taking up most of the road. Death by mule accident was just not the glorious demise Asher was hoping for.

Wolf snapped him back to the immediate. “Asher take the wheel I gotta try to fix the God****n brakes!”

Asher reached over as best he could to take over the steering from the mechanic, trying to edge the mule closer to the side that had the most space between the buildings and the oncoming mule. All the while, he yelled at the top of his lungs, “Watch out! Move! Ma-shong! Move out of the way!”

Wolf was worried. “Asher, Cap’n, get ready to bail out if you can by the bank, I will try to slow her and make the turn at streets end.”

Run-tse duh fwo-tzoo, help us!

[OOC: Asher will be using the bonus given to him from the Captain’s leadership asset. If the piloting of this vehicle in this scenario is more than formable, Asher will also use a plot point. (if I have any left)]

[OOC: Made an assumption here, Tann’Talas… hope it’s okay by you.]

[OOC: Sorry about the quality... I'm in a bit of a rush this weekend.]

The Captain had given Asher the responsibility of showing Wolf where around the Roc. They had been by his Wolf’s room already, and the Kid was just about the show the man the engine room when the Captain’s voice came bellowing over ship’s speakers.

"Asher! Git your kit, an' move like you're burning for atmo, son! Wolf, git on up to the mule, and fire 'er up. Sam might be in a fix, so we're goin' in hot! MOVE!"

Asher looked at Wolf, “Tour’s gonna have to wait.” Digging into his pocket, he tossed the new mechanic the keys to the mule before sprinting back to his room.

Quickly, the Kid grabbed his two bandoleers and crisscrossed them over his chest. A moment later, his athletic bag was opened up on his bed. He removed the Colt from his holster and strapped on his two Peacekeepers. Into the athletic bag, he placed his two Heckler Uzis with an extra magazine of ammo for each of them, along with a box of flash-bang grenades and a box of concussion grenades. Into the bandoleers, Asher quickly stuffed two magazines of extra ammo for his pistols, two extra magazines of ammo for the Justice Arms assault rifle, and two extra magazines for the JA Shotgun. Finally, the Kid scooped up the Justice Arms Assault Rifle from the rack, and slung it across his shoulder. Zipping up his athletic bag, he picked it up and made his way to the mule with as much haste as possible.

Climbing aboard the mule, Asher gave the Captain a grim nod, “Let’s get him back.”

As the mule pulled out of the ship, Asher fitted his bandoleers with two of the concussion grenades and two flashbangs from the athletic bag. The Captain explained the situation as best he knew it.

"Asher, if the situation's humped be prepared t' do what's needed t' give us cover t' git Sam out. He's top priority, an' once we got 'im you folk better be ready t' skin out fast 'less I make the decision t' do otherwise. Now, I don't know what Sam's got 'imself into, an' I don't much care for collateral damage, but if'n it is necessary to get to Sam, you've my permission for it."

“Understood, Captain.” Asher felt the tingly feeling of anticipation before a fight welling up. “Captain?” Asher passes a flashbang grenade up to Sung with a smile. “I brought extras for the party. Just make sure you’re not in the same room when that thing goes off.”

Reaching back into his bag, Asher passed one of the uzis and an extra magazine of ammo up beside Wolf. “If you and the Captain are going in alone, you may need the extra bullets.”

With that done, Asher brought the assault rifle down across his lap, checking the magazines on both the rifle and the shotgun to ensure they were fully loaded and not jammed.

OOC:... in the girl, not the game...

“I’m Linda. Linda Kovak. I need to get of this hunk of dirt something fierce. I have a little money saved and though it ain’t much I can work. I already work at the Lawrence Saloon so I can fix up meal and clean and the like. I just needs to be gone and soon.”

”Mmm-Hmm,” was the Kid’s reply. He had grown a little cool towards the lass, and Ma’s look of ‘I smell trouble’ didn’t win Linda no credits neither. “What’s the big rush?”

“You see, my father is aiming to marry me of to this man, a man who is a bit older than me and well, I don’t be wanting to be married just yet. I want to see the world, I want to go the core worlds and maybe one day become a famous singer and dancer maybe even an actress someday. If I do, I’d be more than willing to repay you but I need to get away from here.”

As Linda was talking more, Asher felt himself distancing from her. He didn’t like her reaction to Trish. He didn’t like the fact that Trish didn’t trust Linda. He wasn’t big on Linda trying to disobey her father on something as big as skipping out on her wedding day.

Cap’n, where are you? Asher thought to himself as he looked to stall. He looked back up at Trish before replying. “Well, Miss Kovak… I doubt much we’ll be heading to the core worlds anytime soon. And the Cap’n’s kinda big on the whole ‘pay before you ride’ rule.”

He paused for a moment, feeling a bit awkward and wishing he had never invited the girl on the ship, “So, if you like, we can wait here for the Cap’n. Though, like I said, I think I know what his answer will be.”

[OOC: If Linda decides to wait on board, Asher will offer to get her sometime to drink. If she accepts, Asher will get her some water and grab a gun magazine for her to read while she waits. She’ll leave Trish in charge and he work on vehicle maintenance. If Linda chooses to leave, Asher will show her to the door.]

Asher smiled warmly at the young lady as she took up his offer to come wait in the ship. The Kid could tell she definitely seemed like she was runnin’ from something. And, well, Asher fancied himself a bit of a hero when it came to damsels in distress. He was certain the Cap’n wouldn’t mind much if she just hid out on the ship for a bit.

The young lady smiled sweetly at Asher, and the Kid could feel his cheeks warm. “Thank you, sir,” she started. “For being so obliging. Truth is, I best be… AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!”

The young woman’s screaming caught Asher completely off guard, causing him to place his hands on his pistols as he spun around to see what the girl was screaming about.

…and there stood Ma.

So many emotions flooded the young man as he made eye contact with Trish. He felt compassion (not pity) for Ma, empathy through the piercing screams of the young lady. He was angry at the girl’s reaction, though it was tempered by understanding. He was angry at what had happened to Ma, and yet felt helpless to do anything. Part of Asher wanted to send the girl away for her reaction to his “Ma”… and part of him wanted to send Ma away.

And so, Asher stood there for a moment, giving Trish a warm smile while the girl’s screams not only pierced the air, but also his soul.

Finally, he turned back to the young lady, “Ma’am, please… calm yourself. Screaming like that’s bound to bring over some unwanted company. And that’s something neither of us wants.”

He paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts, “Honestly, ma’am. You’d think you’d never seen the end of a shotgun before. That there’s Ma, and she won’t hurt ya none.” He smiled back at Trish. “She’s just coming to see who’s joining us for dinner tonight.” To Trish, he said, “I think she’s fine, Ma. No worries.”

Turning back to the beautiful young lady (who’s hopefully stopped her silly screaming), Asher continued, “Ma makes a mean paste-loaf that’ll make ya think you were eating real beef.” He gave the girl a wink.

[OOC: DM can insert girl’s response. Assuming she calms down…]

With the girl a bit calmer, Asher moved to get a little more information. “Now, Miss…I don’t think I got your name. What kind of trouble would ya be in?”

OOC: Oh! I’d like to get into something alright! Blast you, Alacrity! Why must you pick on Asher’s soft spot!

IC: “How’s that feel, huh?” Asher spoke lovingly to the Colt .22 as he gave it another wipe down. “I know, I know… I’ve been neglectin’ ya, and I don’t mean too. Them other girls are all hot and pretty like, but they ain’t got nothin’ on ya… All shiny like and buffed up. You’ll always be my first, girl.” He gentle placed the gun in it’s proper place, giving on more gentle touch.

Wrrap! Wrrap!

Asher looked up at the noise. What was that? he thought.

Wrrap! Wrrap! Wrraapp!

The noise was definitely coming from the cargo door. “Maybe the load’s here.” He said to the pistol. “Want to come along, hmmm?”

Asher quickly grabbed and holstered the Colt .22 and went up to see who was knocking.

“Hey Ma! We got company.” The lad called up to the kitchen as he made his way to the cargo doors. “Might be the load.”

Looking through the cargo doors, he caught sight of his company. And while it wasn’t the delivery he was hoping for, his eyes were not disappointed. He whistled lowly. “Mighty nice,” were the only words he could get out as he stared at the young lady on the ramp.

So caught up was he in the young woman’s natural beauty that he nearly forgot his manners. Only her movement to leave brought the Kid back to his senses. He pushed the button and the hatch opened with a hiss.

“Can I help, ma’am?” Asher said, trying hard not to let his eyes wander too much.

“I’m sorry. I was just… I mean I was hoping to speak to..Are you the captain? I need help something fierce and I don’t know where else to turn. I don’t have much money but I can work real hard. But work that is, not anything else! I’m not like that kind of …well you know.” She trails off and looks up at Asher helplessly.

“No need to apologize, miss,” Asher said confidently, trying to act all smooth like the Captain. “I ain’t the captain… he’ll be back soon though, if ya want to wait around for him.” He paused for a moment, mesmerized by the woman’s eyes, before adding, “You can wait in here, if ya like. I’m sure Ma wouldn’t mind."
