Kate blinked at the chaos, opting to simply follow orders and get back as soon as possible. After being placed in the lift, she stayed quiet, a rarity for her.
"You're pretty new, right? How are you taking everything in so far?"
Kate looked over at the man, Allen, and smiled. "I'm fine, even though Rena is a bit... Well, she seems like a fine leader." Kate left it there, deciding she would just get this task over with and go on with her life. Thank god she could start really working soon.

USS Discovery - Ensign Kate McIrish's quarters - 0950
Kate stood in front of her mirror and frowned at herself, sighing and braiding her hair and pinning it up. She was going to report to her current head officer, hopefully: Caleb Talda. She sighed a bit and frowned at her reflection: she looked like an eager high school girl about to take her final exams.
"Stupid hair." She yanked it back down and growled, then checked over her uniform again and headed out. Kate headed for the lift, stepping into it and frowning. Bad moods always meant trouble for her.
And she was defintley in a bad mood.
Kate sighed and stepped off the lfit, grumbling to herself about simply quitting Starfleet and taking up a position studying dolphins back on Earth. And just quitting Xenobiology. But she knew she didn't have the guts for it, so she just sighed and shut up, hoping no one had heard her.
As she walked, she touched the scar above her right eye and sighed. Proof that she wasn't suited for Dublin: one of the only times she'd ever smarted off to somoene bigger than her and she'd gotten the stew beaten out of her. Plus, two pretty scars to remember her attackers by.
Kate forced a smile and continued walking. 'God help me.'

Kate's first impression of Rena was that she was facing someone who didn't tolerate an overly-excited, late Ensign. However, then she saw the visor. Kate kept her expression the
same, even though her eyes flickered for a moment. She smiled a bit wider, making the expression obviously fake, but refused to show that she had anything more than a simple
interest in her superior officer.
"You know, you're a bit late..."
Rena continued to stare at her and Kate felt her face heat up, a splotchy red blush forming up her neck and covering her face. "I was si-"
"But that's alright," Kate blinked as Rena continued, "You are new to this vessel, and you only arrived yesterday. It would be unfair to expect you to already have adapted under such
short notice. Please relax; I'm fairly certain that you will find that this department isn't so formal as others. In the lab, we are all scientists; rank doesn't matter so much as where one's
area of expertise lies. So then, what area are you most interested in?"
Kate blinked again and straightened her spine a bit. "Xenobiology, sir."
"In that case, you might want to consider working under Lieutenant Caleb Talda from time to time. He also works in that field, and may be able to teach you some things you may not
already know." Rena smiled, but Kate barely noticed the gesture. Her mind was already let free, wondering if Caleb Talda was the kind of person who didn't mind an overly-excited
Irish co-worker. She forced hersel to focus again.
"I also minored in marine biology, sir, in case you would need any help in that department."
"Hmm... you might also want to consider working with Petty Officer Ruea Nami then. She may not technically be a commanding officer of this vessel, but... well, you'll find out when you
meet her." Rena said, shaking her head slightly. Kate blinked: Now what did that mean?
"But you need not consider yourself limited to the company of those two; the other Ensigns, Devion Bradley and Allen Ridley in particular, would probably be glad to meet someone
newer than them, as well as show you around."
Kate smiled slightly: at least she wouldn't be the only one who wasn't yet suited to life on a Starfleet Vessel.
"Do you have any questions for me right now?"
"No, sir," Kate re-arranged her face, into a more formal expression, "Again, my apoligies for not reporting sooner. It won't happen again."
Rena appeared to be unconcerned, and simply gave her an assignment: "Now then, I believe Allen could use a hand right about now. I suggest you go down to deck 39, and help the
others bring up the probes for testing. I believe that's everything..."
Kate bowed and hurried out, heading for a lift. She sighed and stepped in, going to deck 39, letting herself think...
Lieutenant Rena Leiran seemed like a nice woman, but Kate was uneasy. Maybe it was because of the visor... She sighed and shook her head, straightening as she stepped out on
to deck 39. She spotted a man clad in the male version of her own uniform and hurried over.
"I was instructed to help you by Lieutenant Rena," Kate smiled at him
(OOC: Assuming he responds by asking her to do so.)
Kate nodded and got to work, reigning her thoughts in.

'Finally able to work!'
Ensign Sheila 'Kate' McIrish sat up in her bed and hurriedly dressed, switching the long blue 'Save the Wales!' shirt for her standard uniform. She stopped in front of the mirror and observed herself: her cheekbones were prominent, her nose pert and slightly tilted up, her chin small, but sharp. Her eyes, vividly green and distinctly feline, showed no signs of unusual redness. Her fair skin was flawless, and her wavy red hair only required a few strokes of her brush to be tamed.
'My first day!'
Had it not been for an unfortunate stomach ache, she would have reported yesterday after her arrival. However, she had managed to sneak away and decorate her new quarters before suddenly feeling sharp pains in her stomach and having to lay down, hiding from the rest of the crew until she was able to work.
But that was all over now.
Kate left her quarters and hurried to the lift, heading to Deck 5. She walked slowly, savoring the excitement bundled up inside her and headed for her commanding officer's, Rena Leiren's, office.
Kate stopped at the door and requested entrance.
OOC: Assuming Rena allows her in
Kate entered the room, a bright smile on her face. "Ensign Kate McIrish, reporting for duty." She saluted in the standard Starfleet way.
