I've posted basic character guidelines! More world information to come!

Subject: Slate Recruitment

Nobody knows what caused the world to die, or why the gods let it happen those many decades ago. The ground is barren. The seas have vanished. At least that's what the grandfathers say. Hot rain pours down every night. Bolts of green lightning light up the darkness and shatter blasted rock while twisted things crawl on too many legs to hunt for food that is, all too often, somebody's mother.

What few small groups still survive do not thrive - every year there seem to be fewer than the year before, and every year the light seems to be a little dimmer. The whisper on the lips of the bold is thus: Can a world beyond hope be saved? Is there one more legend yet to be written?

I'm looking for four to six creative players to rebuild this world with me, or maybe just give it one last hurrah. It's a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting, and as I'm building a harsh world it is reasonable to expect real challenges that require more than brute force to overcome.

Please build a character with the following considerations:

  • Character Level Four
  • 28 point-buy system.
  • 5000 GP budget. No single item may cost more than 1,250 GP. (I'm going to re-skin the money, but for now GP is GP)
  • I will allow any race, but in game they are going to be skinned as more-or-less human.
  • All official 3.5 books are allowed. If you have an idea but don't know how to do it, please ask!
  • This world has scarcity problems. As such I will be tracking ammunition and spell reagents.

Olan, you brought me to this site a few years ago from a Reddit thread, and when I logged in for the first time it felt like coming home. I admit I post less than the average user, but this place has something special about it. It's a holdout from when the internet was much different than it is today. I may not know every single user on the site but I certainly know their names. It's a little like Cheers, or Mayberry - only with Dragons and Elves and... well with you guys. Jozan, Chessic, Grugg, Philosopher, Nimu, Tann... everyone. We're not especially close but I consider my life enriched by the stories we've told. The stories we will tell.

I agree, the site may be past its "Golden Age" but that doesn't mean it's dead. Spring will return and this tree will flower again. And if that means I should drop a dollar here or there to keep the servers up, that's fine by me as well.

    Topic: Make it Mythical
Subject: Almost a double post from me, but what the hey

    1. The Eflet. A very large gray creature with pencils for legs and another one for its nose. It also has ears like pompoms, and it knows how to play the trumpet. They usually live in bundles.

    2. The Razorback. A gigantic pig-like animal with large tusks. It's wild and attacks anything in its way. It has a hide so thick an arrow can't penetrate it, and has wiry stiff hairs on its back.

    3. The Chipmunk. A furry little brown rodent with black and white stripes on its back and face. They have special pouches in their cheek to carry nuts and other food in. Much of their time is spent gathering food for the winter.

    Subject: Make it Mythical

If someone were to describe a creature to you, and you had never seen one before, how would you describe it to someone else? How would they tell their friends about it? It's a bit like playing telephone, only you're allowed to get creative with what you pass on.

The rules are as follows. I'm going to post a creature and a short description of it. The next person describes that creature based on my description, adding or forgetting as suitable. Changing the name slightly is also acceptable. The player then adds another animal (or object I guess) to the list.

After five generations, a creature/object will pass into legend, ie remove it from the list and I'll archive it in this post permanently.

In this way we can create a menagerie of mythical things for our games and stories.

    1. The Elephant. A very large gray creature which moves on four thick legs. It has a long prehensile nose which it uses to feed itself. It also has ears like palm fronds, and it can make a noise like a trumpet blast. They typically live in the jungle.

    Completed Myths!
The Elfette. A Humongous gray creature with four fat legs and has a hose for its nose. It also has ears almost as large as its body, and when it sounds off, it sounds like Lois Armstrong. They usually live in huddles. and eat trees

The Crazorback. A large, crazy, and highly agressive pig-like animal. It has large sharp tongues which it fights off its enemies with. It's feral and will charge any threat to its territory. Its thick hide is prized as material for leather armoires.

One Chop monks. balding striped monks resembling small, short tailed squirrels. They tend to be powerful musical little creatures with a tendency towards trading music for power, which they hoard away. while others work for power for fame they do things
"just for fun" they are notorious for hiding things. the battle cry is POWER!

A smirk drew across Mal's face as he quaffed his second beer. I still can't believe you gave him your mother-blessed sword. Were you tired of using it, or did you just want to upstage me, Relos?" He stroked his smooth chin thoughtfully and continued. "Argie's right though, it'll help us tell these cretins apart. Come, O pious one, let us seek our fortune." Mal got up and headed for the door without waiting for Relos, though he did throw a "let's get going" nod in his direction.

A faint whiff of smoke still seemed to hang in the air as Malachi took to the streets. It was a smell he had already come to love; it smelled like victory. He took a deep breath of the morning and expressed as much to anyone within earshot.

Things felt different today. Maybe it was the first two ales talking, but Mal thought he could feel the adoring gaze of everyone in the town. Things felt good. Here was a meditation on the events of the past few days: He had taken his group of minions from a ragtag bunch of lying rat-busters to full-blown town heroes. They were still a bunch of lying rat-busters but one honest win went a long way to the standing of Fortunes Favored in Mal's mind. A memory arose from a couple nights ago, something he had said to Relos.

"We're heroes, dammit. It's time we ante up and start doing some hero work. I'm perfectly happy riding that dead knight's coattails for a little while, but that reputation can only last so long before we're expected to start doing some real good."

Mal smiled as he headed down the street in search of information, a real honest smile.

((OOC: Gather Information relating to the whereabouts of one "Tomas" who is carrying a sword, then seek him out as best I can))

"Why, that's just the sort of reputation boost a group like ours desperately needs..."

The headache seemed to have lasted a year, but now the beer and birch bark had finally done their work, and Malachi watched the conversation at the tavern with some interest. Tristan's speech drew a little sneer fron the corner of his mouth, but facts were facts and the reputation of one Argent Blade had barely begun to make waves in a tiny backwater village on the outskirts of the outskirts of the empire.

Courageus. That's how they would write it, one day long hence. Schell would take up arms and stand beside Malachi - no, they would stand beside The Argent Blade, and they would rise up against the bandit warlords, and push the bandits back, back, back, and Malachi and his crew would chase them to Jaron like a flame on oil, and burn them down like so much tinder. It would be the gateway to greatness, and history would remember the day The Argent Blade (and his minions) took up arms against evil.

"Argie more beer!" cried The Blade.

Since it's supposed to be a fast-paced game I initially thought chat would do, but then I realized that a four hour game in person might take eight in chat.

What would you say to a daily play-by-post game? I would post daily and if a player doesn't respond in 24 hours, they simply have no effect on what happens next.

I'm not convinced we have a compelling reason to go anywhere in particular, except literally to search for adventure. We should ask around a bit to see if any rumours of far-off places have reached Schell.

Or we could take up lives as sheep farmers, thereby forcing Grugg to DM the story of a mundane ranch life for something like a decade.

    Topic: Let's play Dread/Grin
    Subject: Let's play Dread/Grin

I would like to host a one-shot no-holds barred CAGE MATCH of a Horror RPG sometime soon. Ok, since it's text-based one-shot isn't exactly the right word but "Campaign comprised of a single event in which any or all of the player characters may die a horrible, excruciating death" is a bit much.

If you haven't seen or played Dread or Grin before, Dread is a Jenga-based RPG (which obviously doesn't work very well in chat) and Grin is a similar game, but played with a deck of cards. Essentially I propose to play the Dread rulebook with my deck of cards instead of a Jenga tower.

I will need 3-4 players before I start sketching the game.

PS: This is a game that doesn't work if the DM cheats, so I promise to play fair.
